Sixty-eight seniors gradu-
ated from Pinnacle Classical Academy on May 30 in a ceremony in the school’s gymnasium. Twenty-two of the 68 were part of the school’s first kindergarten class in 2013, and 75% of the graduates received an associate’s degree or certificate from Cleveland Community College along with their high school diploma.
Commencement speaker Jeremy Tate, CEO of the Classic Learning Test, said that the curriculum at Pinnacle Classical Academy, which emphasizes reason and independent thought, has prepared students well for the AI age, even if the school’s founders couldn’t have foreseen an AI era when they opened the school in 2013.
“The word ‘uncertainty’ sounds intimidating to most, but really it is something we should be excited about,” class valedictorian Lily
Brown said in her address to her classmates. “Uncertainty means possibility: the possibility to create our own stories.”
“Our futures are not built on one perfect decision,” she continued. “They are built through small choices, failures, risks, and experiences that slowly shape our lives into something meaningful.”
“Thank you, staff, relatives, students for the joyous support in life you bring,” said class salutatorian Rachel Liljestrand, as she paid tribute to “those who help us believe that we are worth the investments and donations, and we are able to show others kindness and love of that same degree.”
“What makes this class so special is that for so many of us, we didn’t just go to school together, we grew up together,” added Macie Styers, Student Government Association president. “We’ve
learned the value of integrity, the strength found in perseverance, and the importance of community -- lessons that will guide us no matter where life leads next.”
The seniors were offered a combined $6,138,100 in multi-year merit and athletic scholarships. Three-quarters of the graduates plan to enter college this fall; they will matriculate at 20 different colleges in seven states. Others will enter the workforce or serve the nation in the military.
“We are so proud of the 68 graduates of the class of 2026,” said Dr. Shelly Shope, the school’s CEO. “Many of them entered Pinnacle Classical Academy as kindergarteners when the school opened its doors in 2013. They truly embody the school’s motto, ‘Dare to Soar.’”
A week before graduation, the school hosted its annual senior sunset dinner. The
members of the class of 2026 selected James Laughlin, a high school English teacher, to address them as their senior speaker.
The evening before graduation, Pinnacle Classical Academy hosted its annual senior scholarship night, during which over $43,000 in local scholarships were awarded to the class of 2026.
“We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of area residents who have helped make college more affordable for our students,” said Dr. Shope.
Founded in 2013, Pinnacle Classical Academy is a tuition-free K-12 public charter school in Shelby with 1,213 students. U.S. News & World Report recognizes the school as one of the best elementary schools, best middle schools, and best high schools in America.

assists per game while shooting over 51% from the field.
Seth Brown - Fresh off a standout season at Fresno Pacific University where he earned All-PacWest Second Team honors after leading the Sunbirds in scoring, three-pointers made, free throws made and minutes played. He averaged 13.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, and shot 38% from three-point range and 84.7% from the free throw line while starting all 28 games.
Mikhail Pocknett - Pocknett appeared in 23 games at the University of Buffalo in 2025-26 while averaging
3.9 points and 4.1 rebounds a game. He scored a season-high eight points twice at UMBC and against Penn State-Behrend and had a season-high 13 rebounds at East Carolina.

Jordan Diggs makes CCC history as College’s first Goodnight Transfer Scholar
Cleveland Community College is proud to announce that Jordan Diggs has been named CCC’s first-ever Goodnight Transfer Scholar.
Diggs was selected as part of North Carolina State University’s Goodnight Transfer Scholars Program Class of 2028 and will begin at NC State this fall, majoring in Chemical Engineering.
“Jordan’s selection as a recipient of the Goodnight Transfer Scholarship is a tremendous accomplishment and a reflection of his academic excellence, leadership, and character,” said Dr. Bruce Mack, vice president of academic affairs. “During his time at CCC, he has become an integral part of the Yetis family. We can’t wait to see what he accomplishes at NC State and beyond.”
The Goodnight Scholarship is one of NC State’s premier scholarship programs, supporting North Carolina students from low- and middle-income families who are pursuing STEM and STEM education disciplines. For transfer students, the scholarship is valued at $24,000 per year and is renewable for up to three years. In addition to financial support, Goodnight Scholars participate in a comprehensive student
development program that includes travel opportunities, enrichment grants, mentorship, community service, and personal and professional development.
This year, NC State announced 100 new firstyear Goodnight Scholars in the Class of 2029 and 60 new Goodnight Transfer Scholars in the Transfer Class of 2028. Diggs is among those 60 transfer students selected from across North Carolina.
For Diggs, the moment he learned he had been chosen was unforgettable.
“As I sat there eating lunch on a Thursday, my phone began to ring,” Diggs said. “It was a number I did not recognize, but I immediately answered. It was at that point that I was made aware that I was a recipient of NC State’s
Goodnight Scholarship.”
After hearing the news, Diggs said he finished his lunch as quickly as he could and ran straight to Dr. Mack’s office to share the announcement.
“After that, I proceeded to run around campus telling everybody who had supported me along the way,” Diggs said. “At that moment, it felt like all of my hard work during my time at Cleveland Community College had finally paid off and I would finally be able to continue my academic journey.”
Diggs’ journey at CCC has been anything but ordinary. He first arrived on campus as a student-athlete. He leaves as a student, coach, tutor, lab technician, maintenance technician, and active member of the campus community.

Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ

Over the past few weeks, I have enjoyed some fishing trips with other people. I love to see others catch fish or have a successful hunt. I have had my share of those moments, so I don’t need to have everything about me. But there are times when I do make it about me. My next plans are to be dropped off at the river and to float down the river, and fish by myself from my kayak. Those hours alone produce so much more than what fish I may or may not catch. I also think about my Pinnacle bike rides. This article is a product of one of those trips, where it was just me, God, and few deer and turkeys. I never fail to get what I need from God when I make these trips. I believe God wants that as well. Let me say it this way. Sometimes it’s all about me. Not God. Not you. But me. Let me say it another way. Sometimes God makes things all about you. Sometimes it’s for something that He wants to give. And sometimes it’s for something He wants to check. Let me illustrate.
Some time ago I was contacted by someone who needed financial help from my church. The problem was, I was no longer pastoring a church. It would have been easy to move them on, but in my spirit (while I was riding my bike), God said to me, this needs to come from your ministry – that I am the pastor of Outdoor Truths Ministry. So, before I agreed, I gave God my bank account number to make sure He had the right person. Well, I didn’t, but the idea crossed my mind. But the thing that I remember most about this encounter with God, was that He also let me know that this thing I was supposed to do, was not about the person in need, but about me. He was saying to me that the person’s worthiness was none of my business. No vetting. No references. No follow ups. I was just to do what God asked me to do. So, thankfully I did. What I understood as God was leading me this way, was that He was doing a heart check. He was checking if my faith was still in God or had it moved to my ministry. Was I depending on the blessings or the One giving the blessings. On that day, I passed the test. But another one will come.
My friend, at times in your life, God is going to make it about you. You are going to want to analyze, compromise, and debate. You are going to crunch the numbers, and the numbers will be in your favor. The devil will then assure you that God would never ask you do something so irresponsible. But there will be a still small voice that will remind you that this thing that God is asking you to do, is only about you. Your obedience. Your faith. Your heart. But the truth is, just like my test, your test will not come so that God can find out where your heart is. He already knows. It will come so that you and I can find out where our heart really is. Turn up the heat for the Annual Fire Truck Festival at NC Transportation Museum

— The North Carolina Transportation Museum is turning up the heat this summer as the annual Fire Truck Festival returns to the museum on June 13. This family favorite gathering of fire trucks and fire departments from around the region is the largest single-day event of the whole year at the N.C. Transportation Museum. Visitors to the museum in historic Spencer, North Carolina can enjoy the Fire Truck Festival from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The N.C. Transportation Museum is part of the Division of State Historic Sites within the N.C. Department of

The museum, located at what was once Southern Railway’s Spencer Shops facility for maintaining steam locomotives, has a strong connection with firefighting. The Spencer Shops Fire Department was founded in the 1920s to combat any potential fires at the Southern Railway’s shops. The department consisted of three-reel teams of 11 men each, operating 2,000 feet of two-and-a-half-inch fire hose. With many of the Southern Railway employees living in the adjacent towns, the Spencer Shops Fire Department’s firefighters also responded to the calls of the nearby community, lending a hand to the local fire departments, who relied on volunteers and might not be available to fight fires at all hours of the day.
A large variety of antique and modern-day fire trucks will be on display for photo opportunities. Firefighters will be available to visit with families throughout the day.
“This is one of our favorite events, largely because the fire departments are so welcoming and willing to talk with families about the important
jobs they do,” said Kelly Alexander, executive director of the N.C. Transportation Museum.

Designed to address hazardous fuel buildup, fallen timber and reduced access, the DMP aims to lower the risk of catastrophic wildfire impacts to homes, infrastructure and natural resources.

• Replace an old mattress. Old mattresses can be uncomfortable and thus make it harder to fall asleep.
• Block out light. Light exposure adversely affects circadian rhythm, so keep external light out of your bedroom and dim lights as bedtime approaches. Avoiding bright light as you transition to bedtime can contribute to the production of the hormone melatonin, which facilitates sleep.
• Set an appropriate temperature. The Sleep Foundation advises setting a bedroom temperature thermostat to between 65 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent feelings of being

• Begin to relax 30 minutes before bed. A pre-bedtime routine focused on relaxation can facilitate sleep. The Sleep Foundation notes activities like quiet reading, low-impact stretching, listening to soothing music, and mindfulness meditation can help you ease into sleep.

• Exercise each day, but avoid intense activity close to bedtime. Daily exercise has been found to promote sleep, but intense exercise right before bed can make it hard for the body to settle down.

Dear Savvy Senior, My 60-year-old brother was recently diagnosed with prediabetes, which surprised all of us because he’s fairly active and isn’t overweight. Now I’m wondering if I could be at risk too. Does prediabetes run in families, and what exactly does it mean?

Yes, you could be at risk. Having a close family member with diabetes increases your chances of developing it yourself, though family history is just one factor. Age, weight, lifestyle, blood pressure, cholesterol, and certain ethnic backgrounds also affect risk. Here’s a clearer look at prediabetes and what you should know.
What Is Prediabetes?
Prediabetes occurs when
blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. It is far more common than most people realize.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that about 115 million American adults have prediabetes, and the majority don’t know it. Without intervention, many will develop type 2 diabetes within 10 years.
Even before diabetes develops, elevated blood sugar can quietly damage blood vessels and raise the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, nerve damage, and vision problems. Once diabetes develops, daily blood sugar monitoring, medications or insulin, and lifestyle adjustments may become necessary, which can affect overall
quality of life.
The good news is that prediabetes does not make diabetes inevitable. In many cases, it can be reversed. Modest weight loss, regular physical activity, and healthier eating habits can signifi cantly reduce – or sometimes eliminate – the risk of progression. In some situations, medications may also be prescribed to help control blood sugar.
Who Should Get Tested? Prediabetes usually causes no noticeable symptoms, so testing is the only reliable way to know if you have it.
Adults age 45 and older should be screened, particularly if overweight. Younger adults should also consider testing if they are overweight and have other risk factors
such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, a sedentary lifestyle, or a family history of diabetes. Certain ethnic groups – including Latino, Black, Asian, and Native American adults – have higher risk and may benefit from earlier screening.

How It’s Diagnosed
If you are at risk, your doctor can order one of three blood tests. The fasting plasma glucose test requires an eighthour fast. The oral glucose tolerance test measures how your body processes sugar. The hemoglobin A1C test reflects your average blood sugar over two to three months and can be done at any time, regardless of

Most Medicare and private insurance plans generally cover diabetes screening tests at little or no cost if you meet risk criteria such as being overweight, having high blood pressure, or having a family history of diabetes. Home glucose meters are not intended to diagnose prediabetes.
Take Action
If you are diagnosed with prediabetes, don’t panic. Many people restore healthy blood sugar with lifestyle changes alone. Losing 5 to 7 percent of your body weight, getting at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, and reducing refined carbohydrates can make a meaningful difference.
For additional support, the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention sponsors the National Diabetes Prevention Program, which offers structured lifestyle-change classes in person and online across the U.S. (cdc. gov/diabetes-prevention). Local hospitals, clinics, and community centers may also offer similar programs.
The most important step is awareness. A simple screening test can provide peace of mind or give you the opportunity to take action now and prevent diabetes in the future.
