KMPD needs help identifying robbery suspects

By Loretta Cozart The Kings Mountain Police Department Criminal Investigations Division seeks the public’s assistance to identify any individuals involved in two separate armed robbery cases in the past two weeks.

The first incident occurred at the Domino’s of Kings Mountain at 110-6 W. Kings Street on June 6, just after midnight.

The second incident occurred at the Amiya Express of Kings Mountain at 212 West King Street on June 11, just after 7 a.m. Possible similarities between the two incidents have been observed throughout the investigations by the KMPD. In the robbery of Domino’s, police reported that two suspects were dressed in all black attire with black head scarfs

covering their face and head in its entirety. The names “Chase” or “Victor” were used by the suspects during the incident.

The clothing had very few distinguishing features but from the video surveillance the following has been determined for each suspect.

Liberty Mountain opens next week

By Loretta Cozart Liberty Mountain kicks off its 2019 run next week with an opening night celebration in downtown Kings Mountain June 28. Special ticket prices are offered that night to fill the house at $10 each, plus taxes and fees.

This community-centered event begins at 4:00 p.m. with a parade, opening speech by playwright Bob Inman, and a preview of the show performed by members of the cast. Arrive hungry as food trucks line the street outside the Joy Performance Center and music fills the air.

Performance dates for Liberty Mountain are June 28, 29, 30 and July 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21, 2019. The weekly performance times are Fridays at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays at 3:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and Sundays at 3:00 p.m. There will be a special performance on July 4th at 3:00 p.m.

CC Schools’ summer meals program needs more sites in KM

By Loretta Cozart Cleveland County Schools’ School Nutrition Services is seeking sites for their Summer Food Service Program (SFSP)

during the month of July in Kings Mountain.

The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), also known as the Summer Meals Program, was established to ensure that children continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session. When school is out, SFSP provides free meals to

children and teens.

“Currently, three YMCAs in the county and several churches with summer camps are participating. The program is not based on income, so many groups can utilize the program to serve meals to children and teens during the day,” said Anita Hooker, Assistant Director for

Thomas Edward Adams

Thomas Edward Adams, 86, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on June 9, 2019 at his home.

He was born in York County, SC, to the late Edward Leroy Adams and Ollie Smart Adams and was preceded in death by his brothers, Knox and Mack Adams and a sister, Beth McDowell.

Tom was a member of East Baptist Church in Gastonia. He retired from Bowater after 28 years of service as a mill operator. Tom loved being outside and always stayed busy. He enjoyed creating things out of rocks and loved cutting wood.

He spent 13 years as the caretaker at Lake Montonia, where he lived. Tom was a happy person who possessed a contagious smile. He was a hard worker who was always fair with everyone and lived his life with a high degree of integrity.

Tom loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. He was a wonderful and loving husband, father, step-father, grandfather and great grandfather. Tom will be missed greatly by his family, friends and the community.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years: Joanne McArthur Adams of the home; children: Thomas Gregory Adams (Lisa), York, SC and Lynn Adams Nunn (Kevin), Sharon, SC; step children: Bradley Benton (Richelle), Kings Mountain, NC, Jeffrey Benton (Stephanie King), Huntersville, NC and Katie Benton, St. Petersburg, FL; grandchildren: Jonathan Brown, Peyton Nunn, McKayla Adams, Cheyenne Nunn, Ashlyn Adams, Baylor Benton and Campbell Benton; great-grandchildren: Annabella Brown and Callum Rogers and sister: Linda Lowman (Ken), Gastonia, NC. Parthenia was a former member of Eastside Baptist Church in Kings Mountain and a current member of Bible Missionary Baptist Church in Wilson.

She enjoyed beading, sewing and working with arts and crafts. Parthenia was an avid reader and enjoyed reading the Kings Mountain Herald every week. She was a loving mother and grandmother to all of her grandchildren.

She will be missed dearly by her family and loved ones.

Edith was a member of Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church. She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed sewing for most of her life. Edith enjoyed being at home around her family and especially loved spending time with her best friend, her daughter Phyllis. She was a loving mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother.

Edith will be missed dearly by her family and friends.

NCDHHS launches HepConnect On Thursday, June 13, State Representative Gale Adcock provided keynote remarks at the state launch event for HepConnect, a new effort to address the sharp rise in hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections in North Carolina. HepConnect has conducted similar launches in each of the launch states including Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee and West Virginia.

Harm Reduction Coalition is a national advocacy and capacity-building organization that promotes the health and dignity of people affected by drug use.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services estimates

that there are approximately 110,000 North Carolinians living with HCV. Community leaders, healthcare providers and local officials have been on the front lines of addressing these issues for years.

HepConnect is a five-year, multi-million-dollar initiative funded by Gilead Sciences and aimed at working with local groups to address the sharp increase in chronic hepatitis C infections related to opioid use and stigma.

In partnership with Harm Reduction Coalition, which was selected to lead the effort, the initiative will support evidence-based solutions to meet the needs

of people most affected by the opioid crisis in North Carolina, Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee, and West Virginia. A total of $11.3 million has been dedicated to HepConnect in its first year. An RFP (or request for proposal process) will open later this summer for relevant organizations to apply for HepConnect funding.

In addition to participation by Rep. Adcock, Harm Reduction Coalition will lead a panel of North Carolina-based medical and public health experts, all of whom are on the frontlines of efforts to increase access to care.

Dorothy Louise Dellinger, 78, of Clover, SC, passed away on June 10, 2019 at Robin Johnson House in Dallas, NC. She was born in Cleveland County, NC, to the late Pearly Bryson Phillips and Arrie Bell Short Phillips and was preceded in death by brothers, Alfred and Carl Phillips and a granddaughter Keisha Mull.

Dorothy was a member of Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church in Kings Mountain for over 60 years. She was always smiling and she loved everyone. Dorothy was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and will be missed dearly by all her family and loved ones.

Jeannine was a member of Grace United Methodist Church where she was very active. She served as a Sunday school teacher, church organist and choir director.

She was also a Bible study teacher in the community for many years.

Jeannine retired from Kings Mountain District Schools where she taught Bible and History. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and making blankets for the NIC Unit at Caromont Hospital.

Jeannine enjoyed reading, especially her Bible and one of the highlights of her life was being able to visit the Holy Land. She was a dedicated Christian, mother and friend who will be missed by everyone who knew and loved her.

West Mountain Street will be closed on both sides of the intersection of South Cansler Street beginning at 6:30 am on Monday, June 24th to allow crews to work safely installing a “round-about” in the intersection. Traffic will be redirected on Mountain Street to miss this intersection. The temporary changes will also include a new traffic pattern on South Cansler Street, with both directions of traffic sharing the two southbound lanes while the crews construct the first half of the round-about. Once that section is completed the traffic pattern will change to allow the second half of the round-about to be constructed. Cooper names new Chair of NC Utilities Commission Governor Roy Cooper has named Utilities Commissioner Charlotte Mitchell to serve as the next Chairperson of the North Carolina Utilities Commission effective immediately.

On Friday, Chairman Edward Finley, Jr. submitted his resignation from the commission to the Governor.

“Commissioner Mitchell is a dedicated public servant who will serve the best interests of North Carolina as chair of the Utilities Commission,” said Governor Cooper. “I thank Chairman Finley for his service and wish him well.”

On May 1, Cooper nominated three individuals to serve on the Commission: Senator Floyd McKissick, Kimberly Duffley and Jeff Hughes. The legislature is required to confirm these nominees before they can serve but has not yet done so. Mitchell’s term as chair is scheduled to last two years.

Library offers a universe of stories to summer readers On Friday, June 14, Mauney Memorial Library kicked-off its summer reading program featuring a portable SkyDome planetarium at the event. This year’s Summer Reading Program’s theme is “A Universe of Stories.”

Three hundred students visited the SkyDome between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Central United Methodist Church.

Students were taken on a

journey through the universe, entering the planetarium dome in groups, and introduced to a "star filled" sky. The navigator used the digital planetarium projector and a laser pointer to guide students through the stars of the Northern Hemisphere exactly as they appeared Friday evening.

Students learned how to identify every planet in our solar system in dramatic "flights" towards each world and were in-

troduced to Greek mythological characters and see how these heroes of the past can be found in the stars.

After visiting the planetarium, students returned to Mauney Memorial Library for “Come Back Crafts” with Judy Ford before searching for Celeste at the Kings Mountain Historical Museum.

By Loretta Cozart Kings Mountain’s Jailah Pettis will compete in the Miss North Carolina Pageant this Saturday evening at 8 p.m. in Raleigh.

The program will be televised on WTVD ABC 11.

Pettis chose as her Social Impact Initiative “Strength in a Crisis: Advocating for Sickle Cell Disease Awareness.“ She chose this as her project because her cousin, Latoya Pettis, has dealt with this disease her entire life.

Her efforts bring attention to this inherited disease through community blood drives that increase public awareness.

In April, Pettis, along with Mt. Zion Baptist Church, sponsored a community blood drive as part of her social impact initiative. All donors received a wellness checkup that

PETTIS included blood pressure, temperature, iron count, pulse and cholesterol screening.

Pettis is a graduate of Kings Mountain High School with a 4.45 GPA and was also a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club, and National Society of High School Scholars. Pettis is currently a junior at UNC-Greensboro majoring in Communication Studies and minoring in Radio.

Pieces of Kings Mountain History

By Loretta Cozart Tim Greene is as avid a Battle of Kings LORETTA Mountain COZART enthusiast as any I have met. Like me, he scours the web looking for old photos related to events at the Kings Mountain National Military Park and other memorabilia.

Recently, Greene shared another photo he purchased online of President Hoover speaking at the battleground in October 1930 as citizens from across our city, nation, and overseas celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Kings Mountain. When President Hoover spoke that day, it is estimated that 75,000 people attended.

Walking through the area today, it is hard to imagine so many people in that space. One hundred media outlets covered the festivities, including the New York Times, newspapers from across the country, and the National and Columbia broadcasting systems. Photos and film from the event testify to the accuracy of those eyewitness accounts.

On Sunday, October 5th, 40,000 people attended an open-air religious service in

the afternoon officiated by Dr. I.S. McElroy, pastor of Kings Mountain Presbyterian Church. They prayed for those speaking during the event, safe passage for those traveling, and for the patriots who fought at the battle.

Monday, October 6th brought four performances of an historic pageant of the battle of Kings Mountain, sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The drama was under the direction of Miss Laura Plonk, director of the Southern Workshop, School of Expression and Arts in Asheville. Three hundred people were in the cast, and twenty-one scenes depicting various events from the American Revolution and Battle of Kings Mountain were featured.

At 10 am on Tuesday, October 7th, events kickedoff when the Kings Mountain DAR chapter, from York, SC, presented an historical program. The Tammassee School for mountain children led the chorus in singing “America”. Representatives from the DAR, SAR, Sons of the Revolution, and Society of Cincinnati participated.

The American Legion provided concessions and the Gastonia DAR chapter, in conjunction with the

Boy Scouts, sold souvenirs made of wood collected from the battlefield. This wouldn’t have been hard to accomplish, since the area in which the event was held was cleared of trees and debris, forming an amphitheater to accommodate the masses who would attend.

Back in the City of Kings Mountain, just south of the Margrace Mill, a varsity football game between Erskine and Lenoir Rhyne was held at Speedway Park.

President and Mrs. Hoover arrived in Kings Mountain at 1 pm and immediately reviewed a parade of military forces, including the North and South Carolina National Guard and Troops from Ft. Bragg.

It was said to be the “largest assemblage of armed forces of the two states since the World War.” Throngs of people stood along the roadway, in cotton fields where they paused from working, and on the rooftops of mills and stores to get a glimpse of the Presidential motorcade as it passed on its way to the battlefield.

Early in the speech, President Hoover made a keen observation, “This is a place of inspiring memories.

This small band of patriots turned back a dangerous invasion well designed to separate and dismember the united Colonies. It was a little army and a little battle, but it was of mighty portent. History has done scant justice to its significance, which rightly should place it beside Lexington and Bunker Hill, Trenton and Yorktown, as

one of the crucial engagements in our long struggle for independence.”

If we are to elevate the understanding and significance of this battle in public opinion, it is our duty to do so at every opportunity.

Whether you volunteer at the park, participate in a genealogy society, or plan large events such as this one, we all must do our part to commemorate this little

battle that had huge consequences for our nation.

Be sure to take your children and grandchildren to the park and share the story with them. Not only will they come to love it as a place of historical significance, but also as a place they spent quality time with you. And those are the memories that last a lifetime.

A personal journey Some after Father’s to Liberty Mountain Day thoughts…

by Robert Inman When I was a kid growing up in Alabama, part of the family lore INMAN on my mother’s side was the story of how one of our ancestors fought and died at the Revolutionary War Battle of Kings Mountain. As an aspiring storyteller, I read a little of the history of the battle and then tucked it away for something in the future.

My family and I moved to Charlotte in 1970 for me to take a job as a newscaster for WBTV. As we drove to Charlotte the first time, we passed a sign on I-85 for the Kings Mountain National Military Park. I was surprised and delighted to discover that the battlefield was so close by. So the first weekend we had an opportunity to venture out and learn about the area that was our new home, we went to Kings Mountain. We found that the battlefield had first been preserved by the Daughters of the American

Revolution, and that over time, it had become part of the National Park Service. We walked the trail around the base of the mountain, seeing how the Patriots surrounded the mountain and attacked uphill, destroying a larger, better-trained force of Loyalists.

There’s an inspiring and impressive monument on top of the mountain that lists the Patriots who died in the battle. And there was the name of our ancestor, Col. James Williams. We learned that he had been mortally wounded near the end of the battle as he charged on horseback up a steep slope. Two of his sons, who were also Patriot militiamen, carried him from Kings Mountain. He died of his wounds the next day and was buried near the banks of the Broad River.

Later, his remains were moved to Gaffney, South Carolina and re-buried on the grounds of the Cherokee County administration building, with a monument honoring his courage and leadership in the fight for American independence.

When some wonderful folks in Kings Mountain approached me several

years ago about possibly writing a stage play about the battle, I leaped at the chance. In my extensive research, I learned more about Col. Williams, and he became a character in “Liberty Mountain.”

So writing the play has become a personal journey, a way to connect with my extended family and learn about the lives of the real people who came before us. It has led to my membership in the Battle of Kings Mountain chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, an organization that has done so much to preserve our history and pass along the lessons to succeeding generations.

I invite you to come visit with Col. James Williams and the host of other characters who are at the heart of our story.

every day with their children and grandchildren and maybe this is what you want. Personally, I don’t think it’s healthy for anybody. Husbands and wives need to stay emotionally connected and this means taking time to go out of town by themselves. Whether it’s vacation, hobbies or simply maintaining an independent life. I’ve seen too many dads move in with a child and then soon the child was controlling dad’s checkbook and telling dad how to spend his money.

The next move of course is “finding a home for dad,” which usually means assisted living or a nursing home.

Keep your independence. Keep driving. Do daily activities to keep strong. Eat as healthy as is possible. See good doctors and stay away from the bad ones.

Finally, be a good, happy, loving and independent father. That’s probably the best gift you could have ever given your children this past Father’s Day, or any future Father’s Days.

Now it’s June and we get to celebrate “Father’s Day”. Sorry Pops, but there won’t be an influx of cards, the florist have discarded the leftover flowers and I doubt you will see any jewelry on sale (maybe hardware and tools). That’s just the way

it is. You’re still the greatest, because you were created to be the head of your house and that makes you the provider, protector, pastor, priest, and philosopher of your home. Your presence makes a world of difference in the family. This week I witnessed the heartache of a young man who confronted his father and told him about his struggle in life due to a lack of guidance and his father’s absence.

The highest percentage of males in jail come from homes where there is no father or male figure to provide guidance and this is such a tragedy. Even though you may not receive the fanfare that mothers get; you have been given

by God, the authority of headship. Your leadership in the home will help determine what kind of man your son will become and what type of man your daughter will be attracted to. Many of

you reading this are probably laughing or offended, but have you noticed children will say “Mama this and Mama that”, but when it comes to their father, they normally say “My Daddy”. Creation has instilled something in man that gives children a since of pride and protection when they say, “My Daddy”; just watch a child’s demeanor when they say those words.

So, if you are a father or father-figure, be intentional in your interactions with your children, regardless of their age. All my children are grandparents, but I still enjoy being their father when they need a sounding board or ask for advice (WHETHER THEY TAKE IT OR NOT). But just like our Father in Heaven who is always there for us, we should return the blessing and be there for our children. Happy Father’s Day and Be Blessed!

By Libby Putnam The Col. Frederick Hambright Chapter of the DAR is working to secure donations to place a wreath on the grave of each veteran buried in Mountain Rest Cemetery this December. Working with Wreaths Across America, an organization dedicated to placing wreaths on veterans' graves nationwide, chapter members are hoping to place a wreath on each of the more than 1200 graves of veterans in our cemetery.

In honor of Military Appreciation Month in May, Wreaths Across America will be sending two wreaths for each wreath sponsored during last month to be placed on veterans' graves in this year's ceremony on December 14. With their help, currently there have been enough wreaths donated to place on one third of our veterans' graves, but our mission is to be able to place a wreath on every one of the graves of our service men and women.

Last year over 150 members of the community joined the chapter to honor the veterans buried at Mountain Rest Cemetery as we placed 400 wreaths.

Participating in the service were Cub Scouts, the Police Explorers, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts, CAR members, American Heritage Girls, SAR members, the American Legion Riders, and members of the Vietnam Veterans group, city council members, and the mayor. That day we honored the mission of Wreaths Across America to Honor our veterans, Remember their service to our country, and Teach our children the value of freedom.

For the next six months the DAR will be taking donations for wreaths to be plaaced this December. Members of the community who have veteran members of their family buried at Mountain Rest Cemetery may sponsor

a wreath for the cost of $15.00. Wreaths may be purchased online at http:// wreathsacrossamerica.org/ NC0200P where you may or may not choose to sponsor a wreath for a specific veteran in our cemetery . You may also sponsor a wreath by sending a check made out to the Col. Frederick Hambright Chapter DAR to 131 Wright Rd., in Kings Mountain, NC 28086. Be sure to enclose a note if the wreath is to be placed on a specific grave.

Chapter members will be present at each performance of Liberty Mountain, and other community events during the summer to take wreath donations.

Hopefully this special way of honoring our veterans will become a tradition for Kings Mountain.

Cleveland Co. Commission for Women 28th Distinguised Women’s Banquet The Cleveland County Commission for Women will host its twentieth-eighth Distinguished Women’s Banquet on August 8nd at 6:30 PM at the LeGrand Center. Joyce Coleman (704-477-8229) is chairing the 2019 Banquet Committee.

The group wants to honor women who have made significant contributions to the lives of others and to the community.

Consequently, the Commission is soliciting from the community to find these women.

LEMON ICE BOX PIE 1 (9 inch) prepared graham cracker crust 2 (8 oz) pkg. cream cheese, softened 1 (14 oz.) can sweetened condensed milk 2 lemons, juiced 1 teaspoon lemon zest In a medium mixing bowl, beat cream cheese until fluffy. Add condensed milk, lemon juice, and lemon rind. Mix until smooth. Pour mixture into crust. Refrigerate at least 2 hours before serving. Garnish with whipped cream and mint leaves if desired.

FRESH STRAWBERRY PIE 2 (8 inch) pie shells, baked 2 1/2 quarts fresh strawberries 1 cup white sugar 2 TBSP. cornstarch 1 cup boiling water 1 (3 oz.) package strawberry Jell-O • In a saucepan, mix together the sugar and corn

starch; make sure to blend corn starch in completely.

Add boiling water, and cook over medium heat until mixture thickens. • • Remove from heat. Add gelatin mix, and stir until smooth. Let mixture cool to room temperature.

• Place strawberries in baked pie shells; position berries with points facing up. Pour cooled gel mixture over strawberries.

• Refrigerate until set.

Serve with whipped cream, if desired.

NO BAKE CHEESE CAKE 3/4 cup finely ground graham cracker crumbs 3/4 cup pecan sandies cookies 3 TBSP. butter 3 TBSP. white sugar 8 ounces cream cheese 1/3 cup white sugar 2 TBSP. lemon juice 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream, whipped 1/2 cup sliced fresh strawberries

• In a bowl, mix together crushed cookies and graham crackers with melted butter and the 3 tablespoons sugar.

Press into a 7 inch springform pan. Place in refrigerator until ready for use.

• In another bowl, beat cream cheese, 1/3 cup of sugar and lemon juice.

Whip cream, and fold into cream cheese mixture.

• Spread into pan.

• Top with sliced strawberries. Freeze for 1 hour, covered with foil.

• Place in refrigerator 30 minutes before serving.

EASY STRAWBERRY PIE 1 (9 inch) pie crust, baked 1 (10 oz) package frozen strawberries 1 (8 oz) jar ready-to-use strawberry glaze 1 (8 oz.) container Cool Whip • In a medium bowl mix together strawberries and glaze. Pour into pie shell. Top with whipped topping.

SECU Foundation awards $10,000 scholarship to KMHS student State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) members via the SECU Foundation, presented a $10,000 fouryear college scholarship to Caleb J. Mayes, a senior at Kings Mountain High School. The scholarship was awarded for study at North Carolina State University, part of North Carolina’s 16-campus University of North Carolina System.

The SECU Foundation High School Scholarship is available to graduating public high school seniors who are either members of SECU or eligible for membership through a parent or guardian. Funded by Credit Union members, the $10,000 “People Helping People®” Scholarship recognizes the recipient’s community involvement, leadership, character and integrity, as well as scholastic achievement. The funds are provided for tuition and university approved educational expenses over eight consecutive semesters.

High School scholarships awarded for the 2019 academic year represent a $4.35 million investment in the educational goals of college-bound students.

There are a few stipulations if a site wants to participate: The food must be eaten on the premises, no take-out meals are allowed.

Only children and teens may be served, and they must have adult supervision. It is also suggested that sites offer activities for children, since social interaction often draws participants to the program.

KMHS Class of 1964 celebrates 55th reunion

This is a wonderful time of the year—graduation time and new beginnings for young and eager career and education seekers! For some of us, it is a time to remember back to our high school days, visit with dear friends, enjoy high school happenings 55 years ago, sharing family updates and occurrences, disclosing careers and living experiences. There were 159 in our class; 48 classmates were in attendance.

On May 31 and June 1, 2019 the KMHS Class of 1964 celebrated their 55th high school reunion.

We played golf on Friday morning at Kings Mountain Country Club and later that afternoon and evening met at Swooger’s for dinner and a gathering. Karen Goins Moss and Tom Best were our hosts for a great time back to the 50’s and 60’s enjoying burgers, hot dogs, fries, and “Tony’s” ice cream.

Saturday evening, June 1, we met at the American Legion Post #155, a place not uncommon for us because as youngsters, back in the ‘60s, we had parties there. We played “Oldies But Goodies” music from that era; we enjoyed great food catered by Keith Falls; we remembered 30 deceased classmates and gave tributes and blessings for their time with us and how much we miss them. Mountaineers open summer workouts Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers opened summer workouts last week and have a heavy schedule for the remainder of the summer.

Except for two dead weeks – the July 4th week and the week of the annual NC Coaches Clinic – the Mountaineers will be on the field daily with either workouts or 7 on 7 competition with other area teams.

The Mountaineers competed in two 7 on 7 events last week, hosting Gaffney on Wednesday and going to Lincolnton on Friday.

They have two other big ones over the next two weeks. They will compete Friday and Saturday at Northwestern High in Rock Hill with action all day Friday and elimination rounds on Saturday.

The week after the Mountaineers will play in a 7 on 7 in Charlotte which include two games at Bank of America Stadium. Other teams there will be Weddington, Gaffney, Myrtle Beach and Dutch Fork.

“We’ll see a lot of good teams,” noted Coach Greg Lloyd.

Lloyd and staff have been working with about 75 players, mostly sophomores, juniors and seniors.

Players are not required to work out until official pre-season practice begins on August 1. Lloyd expects many more freshmen to be on hand then, bringing the total roster to about 85 to 90.

The Mountaineers usually work out from 8-11 a.m., with 90 minutes in the weight room and 90 on the field.

“We have been working a lot on the passing game,”

Lloyd noted. “We’re replacing Kaylon Wade at quarterback and all of our quarterbacks are doing a good job.”

Ethan Reid, a 6-4 transfer from Texas, is looking good along with Blake Emory and Belton Pressley.

“We have a good receiving corps,” Lloyd said. “I feel good about all of them.

We have very good depth at receiver. We have about eight that are looking good, including Kobe Paysour, James Ussery, Quinton Davidson, Luke Bishop, Bryce Fisher, Orlando Oduoms, Titus Phillips and ninth grader DeAndre Hoyle.

“The defensive backs are looking good. Coverage has been really good. And, the kickers are looking good.

We have a lot of them returning.”

The entire coaching staff will be working with JVs and varsity this year, Lloyd noted. Diron Bell, a standout running back for the Mountaineers and Catawba College in the 1990s, is on the coaching staff full-time this year and, along with Jacob Lineberger, will be working with receivers.

The Mountaineers have numerous starters returning on both offense and defense and hope to make another big run in the state playoffs.

Returning to the offensive line will be D.J. Bagwell at right tackle, Xavier Brown and right guard and Blake Davis at center.

Returning at linebacker are Day Day Wilson and Titus Clark, and Devin Pressley is also looking good there.

Javari Rice-Wilson, Isaac Watson, Robert Lipscomb, Zach Crawford and Derek Wilson return on the

defensive line.

The Mountaineers should be good in the running game, but may be without the services of last year’s leading rusher Ricaylen Mack in the non-conference games. He is recovering from surgery and won’t be cleared to start practice until around August 6.

“It will take some time to get him back in playing shape, so we have to build some depth there,” Lloyd said. “Marquis Adams, who played a lot as a freshman last year, will see a lot of running along with James Ussery, Qua Brooks and Albert Hope.”

The defensive backs and kickers are looking good in early drills, Lloyd said.

Work is set to begin on the new artificial turf for Gamble Stadium this week and should be ready for the Mountaineers’ opening season game with county rival Burns on August 23.

The game will be non-conference since Burns was granted special permission from the NCHSAA to drop to 2A beginning this fall.

BS Wells Fargo Cup Kings Mountain High won the Big South 3A Conference Wachovia Cup for the recently-completed 2018-19 sports seasons.

This is the Mountaineers’ second Wachovia Cup in the past three years and fifth in the past six seasons.

Breakfield awarded Winthrop scholarship Kings Mountain High School graduate Mandy Breakfiled was awarded an $18,256 annual scholarship from Winthrop University; $1,000 annual scholarship from Dixon Presbyterian Church; and the $500 A. Mickey Church Scholarship.

In high school, she was also a member of the Beta Club and National Honor Society.

Breakfield says, “I chose Winthrop initially because of the proximity to my home,

but after visiting the school for the first time, it felt like the place to be my new home.

The well-organized community of the school made me sure of the fact that this was the school for me.”

She plans to study psychology in college explaining, “In the spring of my sophomore year in high school, I took AP Psychology, and I fell in love with the subject quickly.

I also have always been interested in the way everyone

experiences things differently because of the way their brain is wired and through their past experiences.”

She hopes to major in psychology and has interest in a career as either a marriage counselor, psychiatrist, or pediatric therapist.

Breakfield looks ahead to her college career, saying, “I am most excited for being out on my own as I discover the path that I will follow for my life.”

From egg to chrysalis to butterfly ~ Oh my! by: Tracy Sparks 2nd grade teacher, Grover Elementary School

As part of our study of Life Cycles, Grover Elementary second graders raised Painted Lady butterflies.

Painted Lady butterflies undergo a complete metamorphosis with four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The eggs are mint green and hatch within 3-5 days. The larva, or caterpillar lives about 12-18 days. The pupa, which is the chrysalis last about 10 days.

Then the final stage is the adult, the butterfly, which only lives about two weeks!

When the caterpillars arrived, they were only about one centimeter long.

We packed containers with special food for them and transferred each of them to individual cups. Most of our students named their butter-

flies and checked on them daily to observe how they had changed. We noticed that caterpillars are born hungry and grow very fast!

Students also looked through microscopes to watch the changes in the caterpillars skin as it formed a chrysalis.

It was amazing to see that their skin actually splits down their back and then their inside bodies harden into a chrysalis. As the butterflies began to hatch we were so excited to watch them uncurl their wings and wait for them to dry. When they hatched, their wings were dull, but as they dried they became filled with splashes and dots of vibrant colors.

After observing the butterflies for a few days, they were released on Friday, May 24th as the 2nd graders watched them fly away to find new homes.

Grover Elementary second graders raised Painted Lady butterflies as part of their study of Life Cycles (science unit on butterflies).
