New summer camp near Kings Mountain mixes

Fun. Friendship. Faith. Fresh air. Those are the ingredients that make the new Upper Crowders Springs summer camp near Kings Mountain a place where memories that will last a lifetime will be born.
The camp is located at 413 Misty Lane just off Archie Whitesides Rd. near Crowders Mountain State Park. The camp is the newest addition to the summer camp group that includes nearby Lower Crowders Springs, Crowders Ridge, and South Mtns. Christian Camp near Bostic. Upper Crowders opened May 25 for its inaugural season. It is situated on 57 acres nestled next to the state park and even though it’s only a couple of miles from US74, the ambience is pastoral.
The camps are overseen by founder and executive director Jay Oliver who is a former youth pastor. Oliver credits his own summer camp experience as a kid for hatching the Crowders Camps idea.
“I remember staying in a cabin and jumping in a lake,” he said. “I wanted to recreate some of that old time nostalgia. The vision is to also ignite sparks of hope in this generation and beyond.”
The new camp’s layout features a large concrete pool and fountain fed by a deep well. There’s a huge metal building called The Hub where meetings and programs will be held. There is a nice snack bar building. Basketball, volleyball, and gagaball courts are set up and ready for action. Looming over the whole scene is a 65’ wooden observation tower that will feature a slide down to the pool. The tower offers stunning views of Crowders Mountain and the surrounding countryside. the kids and adults who spend time at the other sites will be having the same great time this summer.
KMHS 2026 Graduation to be held Saturday, May 30

cises for the 311 seniors in the Kings Mountain High School Graduating Class of 2026 will be held on Saturday, May 30, at 9 a.m. in Gamble Stadium on the KMHS campus. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved indoors to KMHS Barnes Auditorium. While the road these students have traveled together began in first grade for some and more recently for others, they have consistently faced decisions and held themselves to ambitious goals. Throughout their journey, they have rejoiced in accomplishments and remained loyal in supporting those facing defeat.
The final countdown to the milestone begins earlier this week. Seniors will meet on Thursday, May 28 and Friday, May 29 for graduation practice ceremonies and the traditional senior breakfast to prepare for the big day.
Feeding Kids Cleveland County: Summer 1 Delivery May 30
Feeding Kids Cleveland County is serving 312 families this summer and need approximately 70-75 volunteer teams to make this happen three times this summer (May 30, June 27 and July 25). Please consider helping deliver to families in need this Saturday, May 30, 2026. It will only take about 1-1.5 hours of your time and will make a BIG difference in the lives of 312 families in Cleveland County. You will need to provide your own delivery team and transportation. All teams must have someone 18 or older on the team. Please only have one member of your team signup and have that person indicate how many people will be on your team. You will need a SUV, Truck, or Van to deliver because of the size of this delivery. You will have 3-6 boxes of food plus fresh food bags to deliver. Counselor Jill Cruise has watched this group grow and refine their skills over the years, noting their unique resilience in a shifting academic landscape.
"This group of students are true advocates for their own success," said Cruise. "Whether it is in the classroom, on the athletic field, or preparing for their future careers and college, they have shown an incredible talent for balancing high school life with professional growth.
While college costs continue to increase, this specific group has been remarkably proactive in finding sources of funding on a level beyond other graduating classes. That drive to secure their own futures really sets them apart."
A key part of that preparation has been the students' ability to look beyond the high school walls. Many have utilized Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways and Career & College Promise (CCP) opportunities through Cleveland Commu-
nity College to get a head start on their next chapters. As they toss their hats as a symbol of finishing this chapter of their lives, they will step into their futures with the collective wish from peers, parents, and teachers that the future is bright and they are successful.
Leaving the Class of 2026 with her final words of wisdom, KMHS Guidance Counselor Jill Cruise said, "Make good decisions; you all are aware of which decisions are right."
Although this class remains united in spirit, their innate talents and diverse pursuits will now lead each one into different paths toward their own unique accomplishments. As the academic saying goes, "Diversity is the art of thinking independently together," and the Class of 2026 is a testament to the strength found in that variety.

Murray Council
“M.C.” Pruette, Jr.
KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Murray Council
Pruette, Jr., better known as M.C., 96, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on May 20, 2026 at Summit Place of Kings Mountain.
Born November 1, 1929 in Grover, NC, he was the son of the late Murray Council Pruette, Sr. and Ola Falls Pruette. M.C. graduated with the Grover High School class of 1948 and loved his hometown dearly for the rest of his life. He served his country honorably with the US Army during the Korean War and retired after a fulfilling 38 year career at Southern Bell/ BellSouth/AT&T.
M.C. was an active, foun-
dational member at First Baptist Church of Kings Mountain, where he took on any role he could to be of service, including stints as deacon, usher, and Sunday School superintendent. He was also a proud member of State Line Masonic Lodge #375 and a 32° Mason. M.C. enjoyed his brotherhood with the Masons very much and this fellowship was a big part of his life. Very community-minded, he was also a Shriner, a member of the Moss Lake Authority, and a Kings Mountain City Councilman from 1973 to ‘75.
M.C. spent as much time as he could in his Bible, even up to his final days. More than just a passive reader, he devoted himself to the study of Scripture and was steeped in the history and context of God’s Word. He kept various passages posted all around his home on little notes to reinforce their relevance to his everyday life. He loved fixing things, spending time with his family, and doting on his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 69 years: Joanne Bridges Pruette; daughters: Sharon Chapman (Tim), Jenifer McCachren (Steve), and
Andrea Whitesides (Tim), all of Kings Mountain; sister: Elaine Pruette Anton of Grover, NC; grandchildren: Kristin Shelton (H.G.), Rachel Canipe (Seth), Jeremy Tucker (Taylor), and Alex McCachren; great-grandchildren: Reese Shelton, Cade Canipe, Cooper Canipe, and Molly Tucker.
Funeral service was held on Sunday, May 24, 2026 at 2:00 P.M at First Baptist Church with Dr. John Sloan officiating.
Visiation was on Sunday, May 24, 2026, prior to the service from 1:00 to 1:50 P.M. at First Baptist Church.
Interment was in Mountain Rest Cemetery, Kings Mountain, NC.

Official Statement from Sheriff Alan Norman
This past weekend deputies with the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office responded to multiple shootings at the Bar H arena located at 2018 Holly Hill Road in Shelby, NC. This location has become a “hot spot” of issues related to private events being held there by promoters without adequate security to properly manage the large crowds and address issues that arise. In preparation for the event the Sheriff’s Office staged additional resources and manpower in the area to keep the roadways clear and to provide a quick re-

sponse to the event should it be needed. On Friday, May 15th at approximately 11:12pm, deputies responded to a report of a shooting. On scene deputies found two subjects had been shot by rifle rounds. These individuals were transported to the local emergency room to be treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries. On Saturday, May 16th deputies responded to another shooting where one subject was shot in the abdomen, also requiring medical attention and transport to the local hospital. Both shootings are still being investigated at this time and do not appear to be related. In addition to the shootings, the Sheriff’s Office had to respond to several fights that broke out during
the three days of the event. It appears that a lack of security, along with no real accountability for the event organizers, has led to an unsafe atmosphere for large events at the Bar H Arena. When situations go array like this past weekend the safety of everyone in attendance, the community, and the first responders are all put at risk. These reoccurring acts of violence have created a public nuisance which we intend to investigate further.
We would also like to thank the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Boiling Springs Police Department and the NC Alcohol Law Enforcement Division for their help in responding to the incidents this past weekend.

Congressman Tim Moore votes to pass Generational Housing Affordability Legislation
The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act Includes Moore’s TRUST Act
On May 20, Congressman Tim Moore (NC-14) voted to pass the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, a bipartisan package of major housing and banking reforms aimed at making housing more accessible and affordable for American families. The legislation passed on a vote of 396-13.
“These are the first major housing reforms we’ve passed in 36 years, and it comes at a time when Amer-
icans are facing a housing affordability crisis,” said Congressman Moore. “This bill takes a comprehensive approach to putting homeownership back within reach for American families by expanding housing supply, modernizing federal programs, and helping community banks make more affordable mortgages available. The American Dream of owning a home is worth protecting for the next generation.”
Moore is a member of the House Financial Ser-
vices Committee, which spearheaded this effort. This package includes Moore’s TRUST Act to relieve unnecessary regulatory burdens on well-managed community banks.

Risk is a part of your everyday life.
A drive to the grocery store is risky. Sitting in your recliner too long is risky. Eating too much is risky. Eating too little is risky. Driving too fast is risky and driving too slowly can be risky in certain scenarios.

Moving to another town for employment has risks. Staying put in your same location could be risky. Changing careers is risky. Staying with the same career for the rest of your life might present a different set of risks.
If you put your money in the bank to gain interest there are risks. If you dig a hole and put your money in the hole then there is no risk but no gain.
The only way to have gain in life is with some risk. I am not talking about crazy stuff. I am not talking about wagering your paycheck in a card game at a casino. I am not talking about betting your life savings on a ballgame or a horse race. People who do stuff like that are crazy. The odds are greatly against winning and greatly in favor of losing.
Yet, there are many risks in life. You don’t know for sure when you marry someone how it is going to work out. You take the risk. You go forward believing in faith. When you take a job you enter into the arena of risk. You hope the job will be good. You go to work every day in return for an honest day’s pay. You trust it will become better and even pay more as you work hard and do your best.
When you buy a car there is risk. You are spending a lot of money in hopes that the car will function and meet your traveling needs. Hopefully you will be satisfied but there are occasions when you will not be happy with the performance of the car. We buy in faith that it will meet up to our expectations and what has been promised.
You have no guarantees when you buy stock that you are going to make money. You have to look at the past performance of the stock. You have to look at how much money is already invested into the stock. Sometimes people buy stock because they believe in the company.
Costco, Tesla, General Motors or whatever may garner your support because of your interest in their products. Yet, with any stock you never know for sure how it will go.
In Matthew chapter 25 Jesus told the story about talents or bags of gold. Two servants took the risk of investing their master’s money and doubled the money. The third servant dug a hole and hid the money entrusted to him in the ground. When the master later returned and asked for an accounting the third servant had to admit he had done nothing. His master called him lazy, wicked and worthless. The master took the man’s talent from him and gave it to one of the other servants who had done something with his talents.
If you don’t use it, you will lose it. Keep stepping out on faith. Make good decisions. Think about it, pray, analyze and contemplate but then move forward. Doing nothing results in nothing. You have not if you try not.

Seventeenth case of rabies identified in Cleveland County
On May 20, 2026, the Cleveland County Health Department was notified of a skunk that tested positive for rabies. This is the seventeenth rabid animal case identified in the county this year. The animal was found on Moriah Church Road in Casar. Any person bitten or exposed to potentially infectious saliva from this animal should contact their healthcare provider or the local health department for a rabies risk assessment. You may contact the Cleveland County Health Department at 980-484-5169 or 980-484-5100.
Rabies is a fatal yet preventable disease if post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is administered. Rabies is transmitted by the bite of an infected animal or via contamination of open wounds or mucus membranes with potentially infectious material such as saliva.
Prevention of rabies is based on protection of susceptible animals and people and appropriate management of persons and animals exposed to rabies:
1. Vaccinate pets. In accordance with NC State Law, all dogs, cats, and ferrets must be kept currently vaccinated against rabies and must wear a rabies tag. Cats are the most commonly identified domestic animal with rabies.
2. Control measures for pets exposed to rabies: If pets are exposed to rabies, they should receive a booster dose of rabies vaccine if they are currently vaccinated at the time of exposure. If pets are not currently vaccinated against rabies when exposed, the animals will be euthanized or quarantined for six months in accordance with state law.
3. Control measures for persons exposed to rabies:
Seek medical guidance from your healthcare provider or the local health department if you believe you have been exposed to rabies.
4. Limit stray and feral animals. In the cities of Shelby, Kings Mountain, Boiling Springs, and Grover all dogs must be kept on a leash. People should not approach stray or feral dogs or cats. Feral cat colonies should be intensively monitored, and their location reported to Cleveland County Animal Services.
5. Leave wildlife alone. Raccoons, skunks and other wildlife serve as the reservoir for rabies in North Carolina. Rabies occurs throughout North Carolina. Anyone that sees an animal demonstrating unusual behavior should call Cleveland County Animal Services at 704-481-9884.

Mi Pueblito Memorial Scholarship Awards $5,500 to local graduating seniors
As Mi Pueblito Mexican Restaurant celebrates 30 years of family, flavor, and community, the restaurant is proud to announce the 2026 recipients of the Mi Pueblito Memorial Scholarship.
Created to honor the loving spirit and nurturing legacy of Judy Cope, the late mother of Mi Pueblito’s founder, Cindy Cope, the scholarship supports graduating seniors pursuing education in fields connected to hospitality, culinary arts, non-English language studies, immigration, family studies, human development, equine studies, and other service-centered careers.
“We started this scholarship in my late wife’s honor because neither of us
could afford to go to college when we were young, and we know there are students out there facing the same challenge today,” said Randy Cope. “Judy always placed a strong emphasis on education, and it means a lot to support these young people in her memory. All of us on the selection committee believe that helping them pursue their dreams will ultimately benefit the whole community.”
After a thoughtful review of applications and interviews, the Mi Pueblito Scholarship Committee awarded a total of $5,500 to eight outstanding graduating seniors from Rutherford and Cleveland counties.

The central recreational area is ringed by 18 brand new cabins. The cabins are 12’x44’ and even though they have a rustic look, feature A/C, heat, a nice bathroom with shower and enough bunk beds to sleep up to 16 campers.
Campers will stay four nights and five days. Food will be provided.
“The meals will be cooked at Crowders Ridge camp and brought over,” Oliver said. “There will be plenty of food.”
Oliver knows the importance of camp security.
“There are 28 security cameras,” he said. “We have trained lifeguards and security at the gate.”
The new camp is pri-
marily for groups, but there are still some individual openings available.
Age ranges for campers are 7-18 years old. Adults can come too.
But beyond logistical particulars, the new camp is also designed to nourish the minds and souls of those who stay there- and this is what sets Crowders Springs apart from many other summer frolic facilities.
“There are two scripture lessons per day,” said Oliver. “Because scripture shows us how to be better people. We are non-denominational and open to all groups. We want to point people to Jesus and not away from Jesus.”
Oliver also stresses the importance of forming
human bonds in camp.
“One week in camp is equal to six months of relationship building outside,” he said. “We are also interested in confidence building and leadership building skills.”
The Crowders Camps bottom line? Oliver summed it up succinctly.
“What really matters is relationships, friendships, and faith,” he says.

Jesus left us instructions as to what was to be the priority of every Christian. Jesus first states that the He has been given all authority on heaven and earth. This authority was granted by God after Jesus had complete His mission on the cross (Acts 2:33). Now Jesus has all the power over “All Things” and we can have faith that He is with us always. After this assurance Jesus commissions us to
go and make disciples of all the nations. These are not mere suggestions but instructions for our spiritual growth and the spread of the Gospel that will save souls. Today many people from other nations have come to our nation. We live in a great time with many nationalities residing all around us. It isn’t practical for everyone to go outside of the country. However, that doesn’t negate the need for others to go to places and engage those people groups with the gospel. This is often best achieved within the context of a missional sending church. I’m thankful to belong to such a church
that has made the Great Commission a major priority of the church. In the New Testament book of the Acts of the Apostles we read about a church that embraced that missional model so well. That is the church of Antioch which resides in modern day Turkey. It was at this church that the Holy Spirit spoke to those like-minded believers and called for Barnabas (Joseph) and Saul (Paul) to be set apart for the great commission (Acts 13:1-3). The church fasted and prayed and then they placed their hands on Barnabas and Saul and sent them off to do the work of global missions. All Christians have
a role in making disciples. Some may not be able to go into international travel but can still be a life support role for those that go. That is what the laying on of hand signified, the total support of those members that they were sending out to go and make disciples. Every believer is called to the ministry of reconciliation. That is to reconcile others to a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. How will they hear if someone doesn’t share their faith? We want to see everyone come to know God through Jesus and publicly proclaim that through water baptism and them begin to make other disciples. Jesus instructs

This reminds me of King Solomon when he wrote, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” (Proverb 27). Leaving her mark: a day in the life of KMHS Senior Hannah Goins

What does a normal day look like for Kings Mountain High School senior, Hannah Goins? Like many members of the graduating Class of 2026, she is busy preparing to forge her own path into the future. However, unlike many of her classmates, Hannah will leave vibrant pieces of her personal expression scattered throughout Kings Mountain long after she moves on to her next chapter.
A gifted artist, Hannah has been painting for local schools, civic organizations, and private citizens for quite some time. She turned this passion into a professional venture, launching and operating her own independent business under the banner Hannah’s Artistry.
For Hannah, a typical day is hectic and she has to be strategic in time management; thus, balancing the academic demands of her senior year with her commitments as the dedicated Captain on the KMHS Women’s Swim Team—where her hard work recently culminated in winning a swimming medal.
Yet, even with a demanding practice schedule and a sports medal under her belt, the moment the school bell rings, she switches gears
entrepreneur for her small business. Her afternoons and weekends are often spent hand-painting local spirit displays and meticulously creating detailed, painted rocks hidden along community areas and local schools for students and residents to enjoy.
Looking ahead, Hannah has already mapped out a clear blueprint for her academic and professional journey. She plans to attend Cleveland County Community College for two years before transferring to a four-year university (most likely UNCC), to major in Art Education. Armed with an exceptional GPA, a plethora of artistic accomplishments, and a remarkably well-rounded perspective, she is already well on her way to achieving her academic goals. Her ultimate long-term dreams include settling down with her boyfriend after they finish their education, building a life together, and spending every day doing what she loves most: her art "We may be young, but we have big dreams for our future, " said
Reflecting on her journey, Hannah is quick to credit the community around her for her success. She attributes the young lady she has become today to the guidance of God, the immense support from her parents, and the faculty and peers at KMHS(especially Ms. Sanders, Ms. Gibson, & Ms Tois) who have encouraged her along the way.
While most graduating seniors are focused solely on what lies ahead, Hannah’s daily routine is a testament to an artist dedicated to leaving her community a little more colorful than she found it—one brushstroke at

KM women’s softball season comes to an end at the hands of South Caldwell

After a 19-game winning streak, the Kings Mountain Women’s Softball Team’s season came to an end last Wednesday night, May 20, at the hands of the South Caldwell Spartans. South Caldwell took the second game in the best of three Western Regional Championship Series by a score of 7-6 in Hudson. With the loss, Kings Mountain concludes their season with a record of 23-5. South Caldwell, with a record of 25-3, moves on to play in the NC State 6A Championship Series against the winner of the Union Pines/J.H. Rose
The Mountaineers appeared ready to force a third, and deciding game in the series, leading 6-3 going into the bottom half of the seventh inning. But the Spartans plated 4 runs to seal the victory in dramatic fashion. For the game, Kings Mountain outhit South Caldwell by a margin of 12 to 8. Anna Wooten led the Mountaineer attack by contributing 4 hits (including a home run) and 1 RBI. Kayla McSwain and Katie Huffman both had 3 hits to go along with 2 RBI each. Ezra Lynn drove in the other Kings Mountain run. Maddie Huffman had a disappointing end to her Mountaineer career. She pitched a complete game giving up 8 hits in 6 and 1/3 innings along with 7 earned runs (only 3 earned), 3 walks, and 8 strikeouts. The Kings Mountain team made 3 errors in the game leading to 4 South Caldwell runs. It was truly a heartbreaking loss for the Mountaineers!
Maddie can hold her head high because she had one of the greatest seasons as a pitcher in Kings Mountain High School history. She finished her senior season with a record of 23-5 and she struck out 248 batters. She also had a remarkable ERA of just .69 which ranked 118th nationally among all high school pitchers. And on top of that, Maddie had a batting average of .542 with 32 hits and 22 RBI. What a season she had, and what a season the entire team had!
On Tuesday night in Kings Mountain, the Spartans defeated the Mountaineers by a score of 9-0 in game one of the series. South Caldwell outhit the Kings Mountain squad 10-6. The Spartans scored 2 runs in the first inning along with
2 runs in the sixth inning and 5 runs in the seventh. Maddie Huffman took the loss on the mound. She pitched a complete-game allowing 10 hits in 7 innings pitched, 9 runs (only 4 earned), 2 walks, while striking out 16 Spartan batters. Kings Mountain committed 5 errors in the game leading to the 5 unearned runs.
Offensively, the Mountaineers had 6 hits. They were led by Kayla McSwain who had 2 hits. Also contributing hits were Addison Carpenter, Avery Cruise, Ezra Lynn and Maddie Huffman. This was the first time that the Mountaineers had been shut out on the year. Kings Mountain Coach Kevin Cruise said after the game that he was very proud that his girls battled to the very end. Yetis Baseball caps historic season with Region 10 West Division Regular Season Title
Cleveland Community College baseball put together one of the strongest seasons in program history, finishing 36-22 overall with a 27-9 conference record and earning the Region 10 West Division Regular Season Championship for the first time in school history.
The Yetis built their season on a balanced, high-pressure offensive identity, combining consistent contact, power throughout the lineup, and aggressive baserunning. Cleveland scored 485 runs, drove in 428, posted a .323 team batting average, and finished with a .440 on-base percentage and .466 slugging percentage. The lineup also produced 571 hits, 158 extra-base hits, 41 home runs, and 117 stolen bases.

The season also included several major milestones. Head Coach John Grigg earned his 100th win as the Yetis' head coach on Saturday, Feb. 21, when Cleveland defeated Wake Tech Community College, 10-6. Later in the season, the Yetis added another statement win by defeating No. 23 nationally ranked Catawba Valley Community College, 6-5, on March 25. Cleveland's aggressive approach on the basepaths was one of the team's defining strengths. The Yetis stole 117 bases in 135 attempts, good for an .867 stolen base percentage. Cruise Arnold led the way with 23 stolen bases, while Tyler Rosario and Tanner Britt added 17 each, Walker Hartley finished with 15, and Reese Guertin added 12.
Several Yetis turned in standout individual seasons. Guertin emerged as one of the team's top all-around contributors, batting .394 with a .549 on-base percentage and .635 slugging percentage while also making an impact on the mound with 53 strikeouts. Rosario helped power the middle of the lineup, batting .372 with 57 RBI, nine home runs, and 17 stolen bases. Britt provided one of the team's top power bats, finishing with 12 home runs, 55 RBI, a .634 slugging percentage, and 17 stolen bases.
Arnold was a catalyst for the Yetis offense, batting .345 with 51 RBI and a team-leading 23 stolen bases. Hartley added a strong offensive season
with a .352 batting average, 68 hits, 41 RBI, and 15 stolen bases, while Timothy Negron contributed a .358 batting average, 57 hits, and 23 RBI.
On the mound, Cleveland's pitching staff recorded 431 strikeouts across 432 innings. Aaron Main anchored the staff with nine wins and a 1.18 WHIP, finishing among the national leaders in victories. David Yelton led the team with 66 strikeouts, while Charlie Collins added 57 and Guertin finished with 53.
The season also marked the end of two of the most productive careers in Yetis baseball history. Tanner Britt and Cruise Arnold each left their mark on the record book after putting together two of the best careers the program has seen. Britt set program records for games played with 105, runs scored with 96, and home runs with 15. Arnold broke program records for at-bats with 337, hits with 117, doubles with 28, and RBI with 99.
Cleveland's success was reflected in postseason honors as well. Britt earned All-Region 10 Division II Second Team recognition as an outfielder and was also named Region 10 Division II West First Team. He was joined on the West First Team by Guertin, Main, Rosario, and Arnold. From national rankings to record-breaking careers and the program's first Region 10 West Division Regular Season Championship, the Yetis' season marked a major step forward for Cleveland Community College baseball and set a new standard for the program moving ahead.

As you approach retirement, one of the most important financial decisions you’ll face is when to begin collecting Social Security retirement benefits. A useful concept to guide your thinking is the “breakeven age,” which helps you evaluate the trade-off between taking a reduced benefit early versus a higher one later. Here’s what you should know.
SSA Waiting Game
The Social Security Administration allows you to start collecting your retirement benefits as early as age 62. However, your monthly benefit will be permanently reduced – about .5 percent each month – if you claim before your full retirement age (FRA), which is 67 for those born in 1960 or later. Conversely, for every year you delay claiming beyond your FRA – up to age 70 –your benefit amount increases 8 percent each year. Your benefit maxes out at age 70, so there’s no financial incentive to wait longer.
Breakeven Age
The breakeven age is the point when the total benefits from waiting to claim equal the to-
tal you would have received by starting earlier. Live longer than that age and delaying pays off. Live shorter and claiming early pays more. It’s a simple benchmark for retirement planning.
The exact breakeven age varies based on individual circumstances, but a common comparison is between claiming at age 62 versus waiting until FRA. For most people, the breakeven age for this scenario is around 78. Another common comparison is claiming at FRA versus waiting to age 70. The average breakeven age here is around 82.
Other Considerations
Keep in mind that while the breakeven age is a powerful tool, it is just
one piece of the puzzle. It doesn’t account for other crucial factors like your health and family longevity. If you have chronic health problems or a family history of shorter lifespans, taking a reduced benefit early might be the most prudent choice to ensure you receive a significant number of payments.
