Renovations continue in downtown KM By Loretta Cozart Renovations continue in downtown Kings Mountain as new owners invest in their properties in the central business district. Gregg Johnson installed new windows in his building on Battleground Avenue this week. The energy effi-

cient replacement windows match the original six-oversix windows that have been in the building since 1914. Brickwork for the patio was installed in the open space beside the John McGill / Tony Ruppe property on Mountain Street. Windows and doors were cut-in and brick flower boxes at

the front of the building were removed last week. Jim Thompson continues with renovations of the interior of Griffin Drug Center. Flooring and ceiling tiles were removed as workers cleaned out the building. Remaining fixtures include See RENOVATIONS, Page 8A

On Valentine’s Day, the Sweet House Bakery did a brisk business, with folks coming in and out all-day long picking-up treats for their special Valentines. Owner Karren Walls and her staff worked hard the day before, preparing chocolate covered strawberries for customers. They baked cupcakes... dozens and dozens of cupcakes of all varieties. According to Walls, their Strawberry Valentine cupcakes are almost as popular as their chocolate covered strawberries. “Valentine’s Day isn’t just about couples; it’s about love,” Walls explains. “And love is for everybody. “One of my customers came in and ordered Strawberries for the five favorite women in his life. When I turned and looked at him, he explained ‘No, I didn’t mean it that way.’ Then he explained he was ordering for his wife, mother, and three daughters,” she laughed. “He ordered two and a half dozen chocolate covered strawberries and had us put them in five individual boxes.” See BAKERY, Page 8A
