By Loretta Cozart
On Saturday, February 7, Simply Grace moved from its prior location on Shelby Road to 209 S. Battleground Avenue, Suite A.
When the doors opened at 10 a.m., a huge crowd had gathered. Customers moved through the store, weaving in and out among other shoppers and perusing the merchandise.
The grand opening featured local vendors who
supported the event, including Christy Conner of Little Annie’s Waffles, Pleasant City Pastries, a book-signing meet-and-greet by TikTok creator, author, and southern storyteller, Glamaw, and Cindy Wood signing her Frazzled Female book. It was a festive event on Battleground Avenue. Kings Mountain Forward board members, along with Tonya’s family, joined in a ribbon-cutting commemorating the event.

Department of Interior recognizes Lumbee Tribe
Following a legislative battle encompassing three centuries, the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina has finally entered a new era of tribal sovereignty.

This journey toward justice reached a turning point in December 2025, when the Lumbee Fairness Act was signed into law as part of the National Defense Authorization Act. The legislation provided the necessary legal authority to finally overturn decades of federal exclusion.
This historic action was finalized on January 30, 2026, when the Department of the Interior added the Lumbee to the federal register of recognized tribes. By resolving this legal battle, the new status establishes a formal government-to-government relationship, ensuring the Lumbee are finally treated as a sovereign nation under federal law.
the door to a wide range of federal resources that were previously inaccessible, including eligibility for funding through the Bureau of Indian Affairs and participation in specialized housing programs. Tribal members in Kings Mountain and across the state can now access services ranging from veteran benefits and disaster assistance to formal consultation with federal agencies on economic initiatives, all managed through the tribe's own government.
This recognition marks the end of a journey that began in 1888, when the tribe first petitioned the federal government for help. For generations, the Lumbee were recognized by the state of North Carolina but denied federal services, leaving them in a legal limbo that has finally been cleared.
The Impact on Local Families
cated funding for medical and dental care.
Lockridge emphasized the local and regional importance of this milestone: "We, the Lumbee, were just granted federal recognition and that comes with programs that will help our families tremendously."
He also pointed to the profound effect this will have on the tribe’s home base, noting, “Robeson County is a very impoverished area and they will immediately see how much this will help.”
Lockridge spoke to the core values of the tribe that have sustained them through the long wait for recognition, stating:

One subject arrested is a 17-year-old juvenile and his name will not be released at this time. The juvenile was taken into custody and placed with the Department of Juvenile Justice. The second subject was arrested by

The Department of the Interior's update to the Federal Register is more than just a paperwork change; it is the final step to accessing federal resources. This official listing allows the tribe to begin applying for land-intotrust status, which protects tribal lands from local taxes and regulations, providing a foundation for economic development and true self-governance.

Local Representative Frank Lockridge has more on his mind than the weather. He is a diligent advocate of the Lumbee Indian Tribe and was elated about winning a long-fought battle. For Lockridge and the Lumbee citizens living in the Kings Mountain area, the January 2026 federal listing is a foundation for stability.
The most significant change stemming from this bill will be healthcare for Lumbee and their families. For the first time, tribal members are eligible for the Indian Health Service (IHS), a federal program providing dedi-
"The Lumbee people want the best for [one another] and we believe in helping one another. While the tribe is centered in Robeson County, the impact is felt right here at home. Based on census data, approximately 500 Kings Mountain residents identify as American Indian, with many belonging to the Lumbee Tribe. Across Gaston and Cleveland Counties, that number grows to over 2,500 neighbors who may now be eligible for these expanded federal programs.

On Tuesday, February 3, 2026, the Gaston County Police Department K-9 Unit, in conjunction with the department’s Special Investigations Unit, seized more than $500,000 in cash believed to be associated with illegal drug activity. The seizure occurred on Interstate 85 in Gaston County. County Police K-9 officers initiated a traffic stop on a tractor-trailer after observing it commit a traffic violation.
During the course of the
stop, officers interviewed the driver and conducted a K-9 sniff of the trailer. The K-9 alerted to the presence of the odor of narcotics in the vehicle. The County Police Special Investigations Unit was notified and responded to assist with the search of the tractor-trailer.
During the course of an extensive search, Detectives located a large amount of U.S. currency carefully concealed within the trailer. The cash was packaged in numerous individual bundles, consistent with methods commonly used to conceal large sums of currency associated with drug trafficking
and money laundering.
“Through strategic coordination and proactive investigations, the Gaston County Police Department remains committed to reducing the prevalence of dangerous drugs and combating criminal activity in our community,” the department stated. “These efforts are part of our mission to foster a safer, more secure environment for all residents of Gaston County.”
This investigation remains ongoing. Due to the nature of the investigation, no further information is available for release at this time.

What’s On Your Mind, Today?
A few people were enjoying a walk at Patriot Park in Kings Mountain on Monday, February 2. The Park was snow covered and sidewalks were a bit slippery, but these five individuals 'ventured out' so they and their pets could enjoy freedom from the confinement of weather conditions. Usually, a walk gives time for reflection. Here are their responses to our question of “What’s On Your Mind today.”

SANDY ADAMS - KM
“I am grateful for the great job Kings Mountain did with clearing off the roads.”

“I am just enjoying the day and thinking how grateful I am to be retired.”

ALLISON WORKMAN - KM “Nothing in particular is on my mind, just enjoying the day with my dog, Charlie.’ weather and the chance to get out of the house, finally.”
DONALD MARTIN - KM
“I have been wondering why my electrical cost and KM property tax continues increasing without reason.”

Marriage and Redemption

significance of marriage for all people of any age, whether married or not. That significance is rooted in the LORD’s design for humanity, and it is built upon relationship with Him. It is rightly said that the marriage relationship is ordained by God as the primary institution of society. As with all relationships, an intimate knowledge of God is vital to a healthy marriage!
What happens when marriages aren’t healthy? What happens when the exclusive intimacy of the marital bond is broken? Sadly, marriages often end in divorce. Thankfully,
the divorce rate in the U.S. has declined slightly in recent years. It is estimated that in 2025, the divorce rate for first marriages was 39-42%. Among the most common causes of divorce in our culture is marital infidelity. When the sanctity of a marriage is violated, rebuilding trust and restoring a marriage is very difficult. By God’s grace, marriages can be saved in such tragic circumstances, but the pain of infidelity cuts deeply.
One of the best known prophets of the Old Testament is Hosea. His prophecy isn’t the longest in the Bible, but His particular call from the LORD is memorable: “When the LORD first spoke through Hosea, the LORD said to Hosea, ‘Go, take to yourself a wife of whoredom and have children of whoredom, for the land commits great whoredom by forsaking the LORD.” Prophets were expected to be holy. How does
it make sense that Hosea was instructed to marry a “wife of whoredom?”
Hosea didn’t ask the LORD why, he just obeyed, and married a woman named Gomer. Several children were born within this marriage. But Gomer later became an adulteress. She left her family and, perhaps abandoned by her partner in adultery, was reduced to prostitution to support herself. It was after this degradation that the LORD called Hosea to love her again, even to pay the price of her prostitution to redeem her and take her back as his wife. How could this make sense? Hadn’t it been a mistake to marry her the first time? Why marry her again? Hosea 3:1-3 presents the LORD’s reason: “And the LORD said to me, ‘Go again, love a woman who is loved by another man and is an adulteress, even as the LORD loves the children of Israel, though
they turn to other gods and love cakes of raisins.’ So I bought her for fifteen shekels of silver and a homer and a lethech of barley. And I said to her, ‘You must dwell as mine for many days. You shall not play the whore, or belong to another man; so will I also be to you.”
This is yet another reason that understanding marriage is important for all Christians of any age, whether married or not. In our day when the sanctity of sexuality and marriage is under attack, the Bible teaches us that God is the author of both. His purpose is holiness in both. But when His people fall into sin - whether that sin is related to sexuality and marriage or not, it is according to His love that we can be forgiven and restored to Him. Hosea’s payment of the price of Gomer’s adultery represents Jesus paying the price to redeem sinners who turn to Him in confession of
sin. The wages of sin is death, but in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, there is forgiveness and cleansing for all who repent and believe on His name. Why would Jesus give His life for sinners? For the same reason Hosea bought back Gomer: Love! Jesus’ love for wayward sinners excels the love Hosea had for his wife Gomer when he redeemed her.
Do you ever wonder if anyone loves you? Do you question your value in relationships with others? For all our insecurities and uncertainties, and even in the face of the reality of our sin, the saving, redeeming love of God is manifested in the atoning work of Christ. His love for those who believe on His name is even greater than Hosea’s love for Gomer!

6 Valentine’s Day traditions
Valentine’s Day is a day of love nestled in the middle of February. Sweethearts use Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to show the people they care about just how deep those feelings run. A 2023 survey from the National Retail Federation found consumers expected to spend $25.9 billion on Valentine’s Day, up from $23.9 billion in 2022. Forecasters suspect spending is likely to increase this year as well.
Valentine’s Day is awash in many different customs. Here’s a deep look at some of those enduring traditions and others that some may feel should be brought back into favor or adopted entirely.
Handwritten cards
It’s a common scene each year in card retailers and pharmacies: people threedeep in the aisle trying to pick out Valentine’s Day cards in the eleventh hour. People can save themselves the hassle of fighting the crowds if they make their own handmade cards. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, sweethearts created unique cards from scratch, according to Country Living. And prior to products produced by Hallmark and other greeting card companies, people used to send one another cards customized with personalized messages.
Pampering gentlemen
It is common in North America for Valentine’s Day celebrations to lean significantly toward favoring women, who are often on the receiving end of flowers and chocolates. However, in South Korea and Japan, it is

the men who are pampered with such gifts. Women purchase chocolates for their male partners, family members and coworkers as tokens of appreciation and affection. Never fear, a month later on White Day (March 14) men reciprocate with candy, cake and flowers.
Bouquets
These days a dozen longstemmed red roses might be the norm for Valentine’s Day gifting. However, roses weren’t always the preferred flower for the holiday. History.com reports that, in the nineteenth century, bouquets might contain all sorts of flowers, each chosen to convey certain messages. Individuals can research the meanings behind certain flowers and put together a Valentine’s Day gift this year that expresses exactly what they are feeling.
Puzzle purses
Sweethearts in Victorian England created “puzzle purses,” which were a series of love letters that could be read separately, but also fit together to create a design
(Family Features) If you’re feeling pressure to plan the perfect Valentine’s Day date, it may be time to veer away from tradition. While flowers, chocolates and dinner for two is a classic, thinking outside the box can make for just as romantic of an experience.
Consider these simple date ideas to reduce stress and make your day extra special. Take a Dance Class Learning something new together can be a great way to bond with your significant other. Research dance studios in your area and book a lesson for a night out. Many studios offer new or first-time discounts and typically have a variety of lessons available from ballroom to salsa, cha cha and more. If dancing isn’t really your thing, consider another skill-building class you can do together like pottery, cooking or painting, for example. Recreate Your First Date
and message. These intricately folded sheets of paper had parts of messages or verses written on different corners and were meant to be read in a specific order.
Heart-shaped chocolate boxes
British chocolatier Richard Cadbury is credited with creating the first heart-shaped box for Valentine’s Day. The boxes were intended to be so beautiful they would be kept to hold trinkets or love letters.
Ornate chocolate boxes are not quite as common today, although the gifting of chocolate for the holiday is still strong.
Celebrating in June?
Many Brazilians skip Valentine’s Day in February and choose to celebrate Saint Anthony, the patron saint of marriage and matchmaking, on June 12. Celebrating both is fine for those who prefer to shower affection on loved ones multiple times a year.
Valentine’s Day traditions are still strong and can add a little something extra to celebrations this February.

5 timeless Valentine's day gift ideas
(Family Features) On a day that signifies the importance of love and companionship, many people find it rewarding to show their loved ones just how much they mean. If you're in the gift-giving spirit this Valentine's Day, you may find a bit of inspiration with these ideas.
Just remember, whether you're celebrating the relationship with your significant other or showing appreciation for a friend, the best gifts come from the heart.
* Food - If your partner is a foodie, a Valentine's Day date is an obvious choice. Make a reservation at his or her favorite restaurant or opt for takeout and enjoy quiet time together in the comfort of home. Satisfy that special someone's sweet tooth with a classic box of chocolates or create a personalized candy basket full of guilty pleasures.
* Jewelry - Whether you've been together a year, a decade or more, it's a per-
fect opportunity to splurge for a gift he or she will cherish for a lifetime. Necklaces, bracelets, earrings, anklets, watches and more all make for perfect gifts that can often be customized with engravings like names or important dates.
* Experiences - Oftentimes, the gift of moments together means more than a trinket. Consider the things you enjoy doing side by side and schedule a day or weekend to do nothing but your favorite activities. Book a tour at a local museum, find tickets to the next big game, sit frontstage for a favorite band or road trip to a nearby attraction for new sights and sounds.

* Subscriptions - Gifts don't always need to be sentimental. Sometimes, they can be downright practical. Creating an account for a new streaming service or music platform, signing up for monthly food or wine gift boxes and buying ticket packages for a favorite local team are all gifts that keep on giving.
* Handwritten Notes and Flowers - Take time to write what you appreciate most about your special someone - personality traits, favorite memories, thoughtful gestures and why they're important to you - and pair your note with favorite flowers. Gifts may spark a smile, but sharing a moment of connection offers a reminder of what you're celebrating in the first place.

Take a trip down memory lane and go back to the beginning of your relationship by recreating your first - or a favorite - date. Whether you went bowling, mini golfing, to dinner and a movie or something else entirely, reliving the past can be a special way to connect and show your partner how much you care.
Plan an Indoor Picnic
If it’s too cold outside for an actual picnic, clear some space in your living room and throw down a blanket. Pack a basket of finger foods like sandwiches, cheese and crackers, fruit, a bottle of wine and dessert for a romantic meal for two in the comfort of home.
Book a Staycation
A getaway doesn’t have to mean going far from home. Become tourists in town by booking a night at a nearby hotel and visiting some local landmarks you’ve been wanting to check out or haven’t experienced in a while. A simple break from routine can make for an enjoyable escape, even if you’re only a few miles from home.
Schedule a Photoshoot
If the last time you had your photo profes-
sionally taken was on your wedding day or a family vacation, hire a photographer for a couples photo session, and use it as an opportunity to create fun memories together. Many photographers offer mini sessions, which only take 15-30 minutes, leaving time for a night out afterward. For an inexpensive option, have a friend take a few casual pictures or use a selfie stick to help document your date.
Cook Dinner Together
Restaurants are often booked up on Valentine’s Day, so try something different this year and make a special home-cooked meal together. Whether you make a tried-and-true favorite or whip up something new, like a heart-shaped dish, you’ll bond over the experience while creating a tangible (and hopefully tasty) reward once the oven timer dings. Then dim the lights, play some soft music and light some candles to create a romantic ambience while enjoying dinner together.
Go On a Road Trip
Take a day - or a weekend - and venture to a destination you haven’t been before on a romantic Valentine’s Day getaway. Even if traveling far away isn’t possible right now, exploring a town or two over allows you to check out new restaurants, stores or other attractions and get out of your comfort zones. Combine flour, cocoa powder, and salt; stir into the batter just until blended. Spoon batter into the prepared cups, dividing evenly.

CHERRY CHEESECAKE
CUPCAKES

1 (21 ounce) can cherry pie filling
• Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line 24 muffin cups with foil liners.
• Make the crust: Mix graham cracker crumbs, melted butter, and sugar together in a bowl. Press crumbs into the bottoms of the prepared muffin cups.
• Make the filling: Beat cream cheese, sugar, eggs, and vanilla in a bowl until smooth. Divide filling between muffin cups.

CHOCOLATE COVERED
STRAWBERRIES
12 large, or 24 medium, strawberries
10 ounces chocolate wafers, chips or chopped baking bars
1 tablespoon coconut oil optional

• Place strawberries in colander and rinse under cold running water for 15-20 seconds. Gently pat dry with a clean dishtowel or paper towels.
• Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or wax paper and set aside.
• Place the chocolate and coconut oil in a small heat-proof mixing bowl heat in the microwave 30 seconds at a time, stirring between each interval, until the chocolate is almost completely melted. At that point, the residual heat will melt the rest while you give it a good stir.
• Hold each strawberry by the stem, dip into the melted chocolate, rotating it until it’s covered up to just below the stem area. Gently slide or tap the edge of the strawberry against the side of the mixing bowl to let the excess chocolate drip off, then place it on the prepared baking sheet to set.
• If you’re going to add any sprinkles or other toppings, be sure to decorate the strawberry just after dipping in the chocolate before the chocolate hardens.
• Store on the counter, loosely covered, until serving. Best served the same day they are prepared. If not serving immediately, loosely covered container between layers of wax paper or parchment paper in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Line the bottom of that container with a couple paper towels to help absorb any of the “sweating” that might occur.

Nancy Guthrie, be prayerful, be alert
By the time you read this there will hopefully be good news about Nancy Guthrie. Our nation has prayed for her, her famous daughter, Savannah, and her family. The abduction of this beautiful, charming 84-yearold woman is alarming and very concerning to us all. Nancy Guthrie is known as a sweet, beautiful church going lady. Millions of us have been introduced to her via national television. We

feel like we know her and Savannah as they have been welcomed into our homes via television for many years. We have asked the question “Why would someone do this to such a wonderful elderly lady?” The best answer seems to be for money. Savannah Guthrie makes millions each year as anchor of the Today show. She would appear to be a deep well for cash. Sadly, it might not necessarily be for cash. People seemingly kidnap and kill others for no apparent reason. Some people kill others simply because they want to kill someone. Yes, it’s a horrific thought, but we know it’s true.

Nancy Guthrie’s kid-

napping is a frightening reminder that no one is ever beyond becoming a victim of a crime. Just because you are good and kind does not make you immune from being the target of evil. Evil doesn’t care who you are, how religious you are or how nice you are to others. An evil person will rob, hurt and kill even the very best of people. This crime reminds us that you are never totally safe, wherever you may live. You may live in a small town, a rural community or in a gated, security filled place but evil people plot, scheme and look for a way. We can never be too careful. Lights are important around your home. Bad peo-

ple don’t like the light. An evil person loves darkness more than light. The lighter the better. A barking, biting dog makes intruders think twice. A barking dog is like a big alarm going off. Bad people don’t like alarms. Be safe entering your home late in the evening. This is where light and a dog help. A handgun in your pocket also helps. Have the handgun in your hand and the safety off. If someone comes at you from out the bushes then protect yourself. If someone is waiting on you in your house and have your gun in hand, you can defend yourself against the evil perpetrator. Security cameras can be great for catching people
later but they may not prevent anyone from attacking you. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. We all hope and pray this happens to no one, but it does. It happened to Nancy Gutherie and none of us are immune.
In 2024 533,936 persons were reported missing in the United States. 203,330 were over the age of 18. Be prayerful for Nancy Guthrie and be alert.

Brian Speer promoted to Gardner-Webb Associate VP of Facilities Operations
Former Director of Operations
Administration is Experienced Servant Leader Vice President for Finance and Administration R. Thomas Welch has named Brian Speer as associate vice president of Facilities Operations. Speer previously served as the director of Operations Administration. In his new role, Speer will collaborate with various campus departments to elevate the student experience both inside and outside the classroom.
“We know that learning and the collegiate experience are only fully attainable when students feel accepted, safe, and comfortable,” Welch asserted. “Facilities Operations and its leadership are vital to providing this environment for our community. This decision reflects our commitment to choosing a leader who embraces the charge to make GWU a family—a home for our students—and an exceptional place to gain skills and knowledge for the next steps in life.”
As associate vice president of Facilities Operations, Speer’s responsibilities include managing the areas of housekeeping, maintenance, event services, occupational safety, and the University’s grounds.
“More than anything, I want Christ to shine through in everything I do—in my leadership of the Operations staff, in interactions with students, staff, and faculty, and in part-

nerships with vendors and contractors,” Speer shared. “I want to be both a quarterback and cheerleader for our Operations team. I want the Operations employees to be recognized for the vital positions they hold. They are an amazing team of individuals, and I want to help them experience joy and purpose in the work they do here at GWU.”
He continued, “While there is much to learn, I ask the Lord for wisdom on how to lead like Christ in this new position. My heart is what Paul shared with the Colossians, ‘Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.’” (Col. 3:23-24)
Speer joined the Gardner-Webb staff in May 2008 as part of Event Services. In December 2008, he became manager of Event Services and

By Gary Miller

There’s no doubt what we do makes an impression on our young people and those who look up to us. Just as I remember buying my first new gun, I also remember my first new knife. Not only was I enamored by the knife itself, but I was also very interested in the paperwork that came with it. While most would only throw away the unnecessary stuff, I made it a point to find out about my new Buck knife. It talked about how to take care of it and how to sharpen it. But what caught my attention was the message from Al Buck. Here is how it read.

Now that you are family, you might like to know a little more about our organization. The fantastic growth of Buck Knives was no accident. From the beginning, management determined to make God the Senior Partner. In a crisis, the problem was turned over to Him, and He hasn’t failed to help us with the answer. Each product must reflect the integrity of management, including our Senior Partner. If sometimes we fail on our end, because we are human, we find it imperative to do our utmost to make it right. Of course, to us, besides being Senior Partner, He is our Heavenly Father also; and it’s a great blessing to us to have this security in these troubled times. If any of you are troubled or perplexed and looking for answers, may we invite you to look to Him, for God loves you.
“For God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten son; that whoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John: 3:16
Wow! What an impression that made on a teenager. I thought big companies and successful people surely had no need for God. I was wrong and I never forgot that simple message purposefully placed in that little box. Decades later, every time I go to buy a knife, I’m reminded of that day that someone cared enough to be unashamed of their faith and who also understood that all we have and all we do is to be used to reflect the goodness and grace of a Heavenly Father. Since that time, I have met other businesses and their owners who feel this same responsibility and apply it different ways. Their subtle but powerful message is their own unique way of recognizing their own Senior Partner.

Speaker Ronnie Parrott and Worship Leader, Alumnus Cialen Gadsen, Invite Campus Community to Grow in Faith and Service
“Selah, se·lah (SAY lah), a Hebrew musical or liturgical term appearing in the Psalms, generally understood to mean ‘pause,’ ‘rest,’ or ‘break,’ and is used to signal a moment of reflection or emphasis within a sacred text.”

“To me, Selah Week shows my intentional pause,” he acknowledged. “It’s me stepping away from the noise of everyday life to reflect, worship, and realign my heart with God. It’s another reminder for everyone that true rest, reflection, and worship are a necessity, especially in our walk with Christ.”
Gadsen’s statement resonated with Millie Raymer, a Gardner-Webb junior psychology major who helped Payne plan the event. She serves in a work-study role with Campus Ministries United (CMU) and appreciates the mission of the student-led group and its passion for service. “The heart behind this special week is to allow students the safe space to draw nearer to the Father or even get to know Him for the first time,” she emphasized. “This year, Selah Week is loosely focused on each person’s unique spir-

Remembering his own experience, Gadsen noted that he is honored to participate in the services. “Events like Selah Week were times where God truly met us in a real and personal way,” he said. “I want to help create space for students to pause, reflect, and encounter God.”
He added that CMU and the Office of Christian Life and Service significantly shaped his faith journey. “They created spaces where

How To Find a Quality Nursing Home for Your Loved One
Dear Savvy Senior, Can you give me some tips on picking a good nursing home for my father? Since his stroke, I’ve been taking care of him at home, but he’s gotten to the point where it’s too much for me to handle. Exhausted Daughter
Dear Exhausted,
Choosing a nursing home for a loved one that provides quality is a very important decision that requires careful evaluation and some homework. Here are some steps you can take that can help you find a good facility and avoid a bad one.
Make a list: There are several sources you can turn to for referrals to top nursing homes in your area including the Area Agency on Aging (call 800-677-1116 or
visit Eldercare.acl.gov for contact information); your dad’s doctor or nearby hospital discharge planner; friends or neighbors who may have had a loved one in a nursing home; and online at Medicare’s nursing home compare tool at Medicare.gov/ care-compare. This tool will not only help you locate nursing homes in your area, but it also provides a 5-star rating system on recent health inspections, staffing, quality of care, and overall rating.
Also, keep in mind that it’s always best to choose a nursing home that’s close to family members and friends who can visit often, because residents with frequent visitors usually get better care.
Call your long-term
care ombudsman: This is a government official who investigates nursing home complaints and advocates for residents and their families. This person can tell you which nursing homes have had complaints or problems in the past and can help you locate a good facility. Visit LTCombudsman.org for local contact information.
Contact the nursing homes: Once you’ve narrowed your search, call the nursing homes you’re interested in to verify that they can facilitate your dad’s needs. Also, find out if they have any vacancies, what they charge, and if they accept Medicaid.
Tour your top choices: During your nursing home visit, notice the cleanness and smell of
the facility. Is it homey and inviting? Does the staff seem responsive and kind to its residents? Additionally, be sure to taste the food, and talk to the residents and their family members, if available. It’s also a good idea to visit several times at different times of the day and different days of the week to get a broader perspective.
And be sure to find out about their staff screening and training procedures, staff-to-patient ratio, and the staff turnover rate.
To help you rate your visit, Medicare offers a helpful checklist of questions to ask at Medicare.gov/media/ document/12130nursing-home-checklist508. pdf that you can print and take with you on

With nursing home costs now averaging $324 per day nationally for a semi-private room and nearly $371 for a private room, paying for care is another area you may have questions about or need assistance with. Medicare only helps pay up to 100 days of rehabilitative nursing home care, which must occur after a hospital stay of at least three days.
Most nursing home residents pay for care from either personal savings, a long-term care insurance policy, or through Medicaid once their savings are depleted. Or, if your dad is a veteran, he may be able to get funds through the VA’s Aid and Attendance benefit (see VA.gov/pension/ aid-attendance-house-
bound).
To learn more about the payment options, ask the nursing home director. You can also get help from your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), which provides free counseling on all Medicare and Medicaid issues. To find a local SHIP counselor visit ShipHelp.org or call 877-839-2675.
And for more information, see Medicare’s booklet “Your Guide to Choosing a Nursing Home” (product # 02174). You can view it online at Medicare.gov/ Publications.
