■ OBITUARIES
Betty L. Henderson Raleigh, North Carolina 1933–2026
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day…” 2 Timothy 4:7–8 (NIV) Betty Ledford Henderson, 93, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and acclaimed teacher, passed away peacefully in Raleigh, North Carolina, on October 25, 2026. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of nearly 68 years, Charlie L. “Rance” Henderson. Born in Gastonia, NC, on Easter Sunday, April 16, 1933, Betty was the fifth of nine children born to Irvin William “I.W.” Ledford and Mary “Ruth” Hinson Ledford. Her twin brother, Billie Wray, died of diphtheria at the age of four, an early loss that helped shape Betty’s lifelong compassion for children. After her family moved to Kings Mountain, Betty attended Cleveland County public schools and graduated from Kings Mountain High School in 1951. She met Rance when he asked her to be his date for their senior banquet. That invitation marked the beginning of a lifelong partnership built on love, faith, and a shared commitment to serving others. Betty earned an Associate of Arts degree from Gardner-Webb College in 1953, where she discovered her calling to teach deaf children. She completed a teacher-training program at the North Carolina School for the Deaf (NCSD) in Morganton in 1954 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Carson-Newman College in 1955. Her teaching career began at NCSD (1955–1956), followed by the Oregon School for the Deaf (OSD) (1956– 1957). On August 18, 1957, following Rance’s return from Naval service, the two were married. Nine months and one day later, they welcomed their first child, David. Julie completed the family when she arrived 18 months afterward. Betty was a devoted stayat-home mom, waiting to resume her teaching career until Julie started kindergarten. She continued at OSD
until 1968. During those years, she earned a master’s degree in deaf education from Oregon College of Education (now Western Oregon University) in 1966 and a Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education Specialist Certification from the John Tracy Center in Los Angeles. The family next spent two years in Wheaton, Illinois, where Betty supervised student teachers at DePaul University. They then returned to North Carolina when Rance became superintendent of NCSD. Betty taught the school’s “prep class,” helping four- and five-year-old children prepare for first grade. She also served as adjunct faculty in early childhood education at Lenoir-Rhyne College in the early 1970s. In 1976, she became principal of Rankin Hall, a position she held until 1985, before returning to the classroom as a thirdgrade teacher. Throughout her career, Betty was an active member of the Convention of American Instructors of the Deaf and of national, state, and local chapters of the Association for the Education of Young Children. Her contributions to education were recognized with the Governor’s Award for Excellence in 1984 and the Southeast Regional Institute on Deafness Outstanding Educator of the Year award in 1986. Although she officially retired in 1992, NCSD remained close to her heart. She returned often as a substitute teacher and later served as interim middle school principal for five months. Betty’s dedication to service extended well beyond the classroom. For 50 years, she was a devoted member of First Baptist Church in Morganton, where she taught Sunday School and faithfully served on numerous committees. She was also an active member—and often an officer—of several community organizations, including the Quaker Meadows Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), the Morganton Service League, the Morganton Woman’s Club, and the Friday Afternoon Book Club. A committed supporter of her alma mater, Betty and Rance received Gardner-Webb University’s N.C. Baptist Heritage Award in 2018 in recognition of their exemplary generosity and service. Above all, Betty treasured her family and the friendships she built throughout her life. She delighted in time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; in welcoming family and friends to their Holiday Shores home on Lake James; and in traveling with Rance and loved ones. She approached life with energy, curiosity, and an enduring enthusiasm for new experiences. Family members often joked that Betty had a serious case of
FOMO—fear of missing out—because she was always ready to go whenever an opportunity arose. Creative, inquisitive, and always ready for fun, Betty enjoyed card games, jigsaw puzzles and nature. She also had a keen interest in family history. A descendant of Christopher Bechtler, Sr., she was particularly fascinated by the Bechtler Mint in Rutherfordton, North Carolina, a private mint that played an important role in America’s first gold rush by converting locally mined gold into reliable currency. Betty and Rance made their home in Morganton for five decades, building lasting friendships and treasured memories. In 2020, they moved to Magnolia Glen senior living community in Raleigh to be closer to their children, where they quickly became valued members of the community. Following Rance’s death in 2025, Betty moved in with her daughter, Julie, and son-in-law, Rod, where she continued to be surrounded by family and love. Betty is survived by her children, David (Sherri) and Julie (Rod); her grandchildren, Jessica (Brad), James (Regan), Andrew (Lauren), Sarah (Dustin), and Abbie (Will); and her great-grandchildren, Jackson, Oliver, Luke, Elsie Jo, Charlie, and Morgan. She is also survived by her brother, Jerry Ledford; sisters-in-law Kay Davis, Jill Ledford, and Mary Henderson; brother-inlaw Jerry Rikard; and many nieces and nephews who adored their “Aunt Betty.” The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to all the medical professionals who cared for mom during the past year; the staff of Ruth Sheets Adult Care Center for the love, kindness, and support they showed Betty the past seven months; and the staff of Transitions LifeCare for their compassionate, attentive care during Betty’s final days. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 22, 2026, in the chapel at First Baptist Church in Morganton, North Carolina. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. in the church parlor. A brief interment service will follow immediately after the Celebration of Life. Twenty-fourth case of rabies Identified in Cleveland County On October 28, 2026, the Cleveland County Health Department was notified of a skunk that tested positive for rabies. This is the twenty-fourth rabid animal case identified in the county this year. The animal was found on Jenkins Road in Shelby. Any person bitten or exposed to potentially infectious saliva from this animal should contact their healthcare provider or the local health department for a rabies risk assessment. You may contact the Cleveland County Health Department at 980-4845169 or 980-484-5100. Rabies is a fatal yet preventable disease if post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is administered. Rabies is transmitted by the bite of an infected animal or via contamination of open wounds or mucus membranes with potentially infectious material such as saliva. Prevention of rabies is
based on protection of susceptible animals and people and appropriate management of persons and animals exposed to rabies: • Vaccinate pets. In accordance with NC State Law, all dogs, cats, and ferrets must be kept currently vaccinated against rabies and must wear a rabies tag. Cats are the most commonly identified domestic animal with rabies. • Control measures for pets exposed to rabies: If pets are exposed to rabies, they should receive a booster dose of rabies vaccine if they are currently vaccinated at the time of exposure. If pets are not currently vaccinated against rabies when exposed, the animals will be euthanized or quarantined for six months in accordance with state law. • Control measures for persons exposed to rabies: Seek medical guidance from your
healthcare provider or the local health department if you believe you have been exposed to rabies. • Limit stray and feral animals. In the cities of Shelby, Kings Mountain, Boiling Springs, and Grover all dogs must be kept on a leash. People should not approach stray or feral dogs or cats. Feral cat colonies should be intensively monitored, and their location reported to Cleveland County Animal Services. • Leave wildlife alone. Raccoons, skunks and other wildlife serve as the reservoir for rabies in North Carolina. Rabies occurs throughout North Carolina. Anyone that sees an animal demonstrating unusual behavior should call Cleveland County Animal Services at 704-481-9884.

On November 2, 2026, at approximately 9:30 p.m., Gaston County Police officers responded to a reported shooting at 1027 Old Church Road, outside of Gastonia. Upon arrival, officers located one victim deceased at the scene. A witness provided officers with information identifying a suspect, along with a description of the suspect's vehicle and direction of travel. “I didn’t want to do that” M a n y people carve their pumpkins into lanterns or use them to make pies, but not DANYALE me. I wanted my pumpkin PATTERSON to become a planter that would hold beautiful flowers. I thought it was a great idea, but if my pumpkin had a voice, it might have had a different opinion. It probably would have said, “I didn’t expect to become a planter. I wanted to do something else.” How many times do we pursue aspirations that do not fulfill us or simply do not work out the way we hoped? Sometimes what feels like a disappointment may actu-
ally be part of God’s greater plan for us. For example, in the movie, It’s a Wonderful Life, the main character, George, thought becoming rich and traveling the world would bring him the most joy. Instead, he felt stuck in a small town and believed his life had little meaning. Yet he saved his brother’s life, kept an elderly man from accidentally poisoning someone, and helped save the town from a greedy businessman. George’s life did not look the way he imagined, but it was still full of purpose and good works. Ephesians 2:10 (NLT), “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”
Surrender to the Process Although it was an arduous process to cut away the junk inside my pumpkin, I was very proud of how beautiful the pumpkin planter turned out, and I received many compliments on it. In the same way, God is often cutting away things we do not need in our souls: issues, wrong mindsets, and sin that hinder us from becoming who he wants us to be. He is pleased with the work he accomplishes in us. Sometimes we complain about the process or try to avoid it, but if we surrender to the work God is doing in our lives, we may be amazed by what he creates. We can become beautiful vessels that shine brightly for God’s kingdom. We may also discover that
the role God has for us fits us perfectly when we are willing to submit to his plan. Jeremiah 18:6 (NLT) says, “O Israel, can I not do to you as this potter has done to his clay? As the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand.” Confession: “Lord, you are the potter and I am the clay. Make me into what you would have me to be for your purpose.” CONNECTING TO GOD: If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away
from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Bible-believing church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer. Celebrate the return of Fall with One-Pot Ratatouille Spaghetti (Feature Impact) As the seasons change, you don't have to overhaul all your meal plans immediately. Usher in the arrival of autumn with recipes that blend fresh, summery produce with warm fall flavors. This Ratatouille Spaghetti recipe is a perfect way to make the most of those last few harvests from the garden or trips to the farmer's market. Create layers of rich flavor by taking your time with each vegetable - first browning the eggplant then softening the zucchini and tomatoes before adding flavorful aromatics like garlic and thyme to make the whole house smell delicious. The addition of chickpeas or cannellini beans boosts the protein and fiber in the meal, and you can use a high-protein or whole-grain pasta for even more nutrition. The best part is, while this meal might taste gourmet, you can have it ready in less than an hour - and leave yourself with only one pot to wash afterwards. Even if it's a school night, it only takes a few extra steps to make a spaghetti dinner feel a little fancier. Discover more seasonal recipes at Culinary.net.

cup extra-virgin olive oil, divided pound unpeeled eggplant, cut into 1-inch pieces teaspoons kosher salt, divided large zucchini, divided small yellow onion, chopped cloves garlic, finely minced tablespoon chopped fresh thyme teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes can (12 ounces) chickpeas or cannellini beans, drained and rinsed cups water cup jarred tomato puree ounces dried spaghetti orange, yellow or red bell pepper, cut into 1-inch pieces medium tomatoes, cut into 1/2-inch pieces cup packed fresh basil leaves, roughly torn lemon juice, to taste In large Dutch oven or stovetop pot, heat 1/4 cup oil over medium heat until shimmering. Add eggplant and 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt; cook 8-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until deeply browned and softened. Transfer to medium bowl and set aside. Wipe pot clean if remaining browned bits are starting to burn. Cut one zucchini into 1-inch pieces. In now-empty pot, heat remaining oil over medium heat until shimmering. Add zucchini pieces, onion and 1/2 teaspoon salt; cook about 6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until zucchini is browned and softened. Stir in garlic, thyme and red pepper; cook about 30 seconds, stirring constantly, until fragrant. Stir in reserved eggplant and chickpeas or cannellini beans. Add water, tomato puree and remaining salt to pot then bring to simmer over medium-high heat. Add spaghetti, reduce heat to medium-low, cover pot and cook about 8 minutes, stirring often to prevent sticking, until spaghetti is almost al dente. Cut remaining zucchini into 1/2-inch pieces. Add zucchini pieces and bell pepper to spaghetti and cook 6-8 minutes, covered, over medium-low heat, stirring often, until pasta is al dente and vegetables are tender. Stir in fresh tomatoes and basil; remove from heat. Divide evenly among six bowls. Finish with squeeze of lemon juice for extra brightness, to taste, and garnish with extra olive oil, basil and crushed red pepper, if desired.

CCC Cybersecurity students excel in competitions Cleveland Community College cybersecurity students earned recognition in multiple competitions and events throughout October, collecting top finishes at the regional, state, and national levels. The achievements highlight both the strength of CCC's cybersecurity program and students' ability to apply their skills in competitive, real-world environments. “We are proud of the performance of these students,” said Susan Randall, department chair, Information Technology and Mission
Critical Operations. “These accomplishments reflect the College's commitment to providing hands-on learning opportunities that prepare students for successful careers in networking and cybersecurity.” Leading the way was Donnie Adams, who earned first place in the Carolina Cyber Network Virtual Individual Capture the Flag Competition. Competing against 89 participants, Adams demonstrated exceptional technical knowledge, problem-solving abilities, and cybersecurity skills to
secure the top finish. Fellow cybersecurity student RJ Ruppe also delivered an outstanding performance at the 8th Annual UNCW Cybersecurity Conference. Competing individually against teams representing institutions including East Carolina University, Purdue University, and the University of North Carolina Wilmington, Ruppe captured first place in the Red Team Capture the Flag competition, which focused on offensive security strategies, and second place in the Blue Team competi-
tion, which emphasized defensive cybersecurity skills. CCC students continued their success at the ECU/ North Carolina National Guard Cyber Security Response Force Project Showcase. Adams earned third place among 10 project submissions for his initiative designed to help senior citizens better understand cybersecurity risks and stay safe online. Corey Hickman also presented a project focused on supporting students who participate in cybersecurity competitions.
A team of CCC cybersecurity students also earned third place overall in the Hack The Box Capture the Flag competition and finished second among participating colleges. The team demonstrated strong technical expertise, teamwork, and critical-thinking skills while competing against both collegiate teams and cybersecurity professionals. Team members included Adams, Dalton Green, Alex Algarin, Hickman, and Ruppe. Adding to the program's momentum, Ruppe achieved a top-two-percent
national finish in the National Cyber League Individual Game. Competing against 2,875 participants nationwide, he placed 57th overall and excelled in challenges involving digital forensics, penetration testing, vulnerability assessment, and incwident response. Congratulations to these students! Their achievements at these competitions reinforce the strength of CCC’s cybersecurity program in preparing students for successful careers.

road victory over Southeast Missouri on Saturday afternoon, October 31 at Houck Field, snapping a two-game losing streak and improving to 3-6 overall and 2-2 in Ohio Valley Conference play. The Runnin' Bulldogs totaled 410 yards of offense, including 201 rushing yards, while holding the Redhawks to 187 total yards. Gardner-Webb also forced three turnovers. Adrian Cormier gave Gardner-Webb an early lead with a 59-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Southeast Missouri answered with an interception return for a touchdown to even the score at 7-7, but the Runnin' Bulldogs responded with
a 40-yard field goal from Tyler Simpson to regain the lead, 10-7, at the end of the opening quarter. Gardner-Webb extended its advantage in the second quarter, behind quarterback Lan Farmer. Farmer connected with Christian Vann on a 14yard touchdown pass to cap a five-play, 77-yard drive. After the Redhawks added a field goal to cut the deficit to 1710, Farmer scored on an eight-yard run to give the Runnin' Bulldogs a 24-10 advantage heading into halftime. The Gardner-Webb defense kept Southeast Missouri off the scoreboard throughout the second half. Simpson added
a 43-yard field goal late in the third quarter to push the lead to 27-10 before Farmer and Kory Jones connected for an 18-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter. The scoring play capped a 10-play, 76-yard drive that took more than five minutes off the clock and secured the 34-10 victory. Farmer finished the afternoon with 209 passing yards and two touchdowns while adding 39 rushing yards and another score. Jones led the receiving corps with four catches for 87 yards and a touchdown, while Sean Brady also hauled in four passes for 52 yards. Cormier paced the ground game with 76 yards on four carries,
highlighted by his 59-yard touchdown run. Defensively, Cahari Haynes led the Runnin' Bulldogs with seven tackles, including one tackle for loss. Tre Yanez added six tackles and a tackle for loss as Gardner-Webb limited the Redhawks to just 56 rushing yards and 131 passing yards. Up next, Gardner-Webb returns home this Saturday, November 7, to host Lindenwood in an Ohio Valley Conference matchup at Spangler Stadium for Homecoming. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

Helping an Aging Parent Manage Their Money Dear Savvy Senior, Since my dad passed away last year, my 82-year-old mother has struggled to keep up with her bills. She’s proud and insists on doing things herself, but I worry she’s falling behind. How can I help her manage her finances without upsetting her? --Concerned Daughter Dear Concerned, You’re not alone – lots of adult children step in to help aging parents with their finances. Whether it’s paying bills, handling bank accounts, filing insurance claims, or sorting through taxes, taking on these responsibilities can feel tricky. The key is to approach it with respect, organization, and the right safe-
guards. Here’s how to help your mom without stepping on her independence. Have a conversation Talking about money can be sensitive, especially with a parent who values doing things on her own. Start with a gentle, respectful conversation. Share your concerns and offer to help with her bills or other chores. If you have siblings, loop them in too. Knowing the whole family is on the same page can reassure your mom that everyone cares, not that you’re taking over. Get organized If your mom is open to your help, the first step is getting organized. Make a clear list of her financial info, including
monthly bills like utilities, phone, cable, and credit cards; bank and investment accounts; company benefits like retirement plans or pensions; insurance policies, including life, home, auto, long-term care, and Medicare; and copies of recent income tax returns. Having everything in one place will make managing her finances much smoother for both of you. Locate legal documents Now’s also a good time to see if your mom has essential legal papers: a will or trust, an advance directive with a living will and health-care proxy, and a durable power of attorney for finances. If she doesn’t, now’s the time to get
them in place. If she does, make sure they’re up to date and that you know where to find them. Simplify financial tasks To make life easier for both you and your mom, set up automatic payments for her bills and have her income go straight into her bank account. If her accounts and investments are scattered, consider consolidating them – it makes everything much simpler. You can also get her banking and investment accounts online so you can pay bills and monitor everything anytime, without digging through papers or making extra trips. Set up protections Protect your mom from
scams or risky spending. A True Link Visa Prepaid Card (truelinkfinancial.com/ prepaid-card) gives her access to her money but lets you set spending limits. Online monitoring services like Carefull (getcarefull.com) or EverSafe (eversafe. com) can watch her accounts, flag anything suspicious, and send alerts if something seems off. These tools give peace of mind while letting her maintain independence. Seek outside help If you live far away or just need a hand, professional services can step in. SilverBills (silverbills.com) handles bill payments, while a certified daily money manager (aadmm.com) can come by once or
twice a month to pay bills, make deposits, sort through health insurance statements, and keep everything organized. Think of them as extra hands to make life easier for both of you. Helping a parent manage finances takes patience, respect, and tact. With clear communication, organization, and the right safeguards, you can support your mom while keeping her independence and peace of mind intact.
