Smitty and the JumpStarters Kings Mountain to perform at Mountaineer National Military Park Days Heritage Festival commemorates October 7, 1781 battle By Alan Hodge October 7, 1781, marks the Revolutionary War date when Patriots defeated Loyalists at the Battle of Kings Mountain. As it has for many years, the Kings Mountain. National Military Park held events celebrating that victory which was pivotal in our nation’s bid for freedom from Great Britain. This year’s 246th anniversary events kicked off on October 3rd and 4th with a living history festival featuring a Revolutionary War reenactment camp and displays by living history groups. The reenactors came from as far away as Texas to demonstrate Revolutionary War uniforms, cooking, musketry, and other 18th century military and civilian life skills in the field. The camp was situated in the woods near the park visitor center. Groups of spectators walked through it observing the unique scene and chatting with the reenactors. Cooking over the open campfire was demonstrated by Lana Zick from Fort Mill. She was frying bacon and boiling a big iron pot of beans for the reenactors. The delicious aroma wafted across the camp. “I enjoy serving the public by letting them see living history,” Zick said. Reverend Donnie Larston Williams, a servant of the Lord Jesus Christ left for his heavenly home on Friday September 25, 2026, at the age of 74, while surrounded by his family. He was a loving husband, dad, grandad, a spiritual leader, and generous provider. He brought his family up in the admonition of the Lord, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord,” Joshua 24:15. As a result of his living example, his entire family continues to serve the Lord. He is survived by his wife, Debra Conner Williams of 56 years, daughter Alecia Dover (Kevin), son Rev. Donnie “Caleb” Williams (Jordan), granddaughter Kaitlyn Angelique Bryant (Robbie), grandson Bryant Larston Dover, granddaughters Baylee Rae and Marlee Kate Williams, great grandsons Riggins Conner and Roper Caleb Bryant, his cousin who is more like a brother, Mike (Hub) Rogers, and his church family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Larston Williams, and Edna Dotson Williams, infant daughter, Sharon Angelique Williams, and sister, Jean Williams Jones Don graduated from Shelby High School in 1970. In his early years, he was known by many as the lead singer and lead guitarist of

“The Trends” and “Freeway South.” Music has always been an important part of his life. His last gig was at the Shelby Country Club on New Years Eve 1983. He was born again in August 1983 and made the decision to give up secular music and began a contemporary Christian group “Living Proof.” After a year, he accepted the call into ministry. He graduated from Southern Wesleyan University with a BS degree in Christian Ministries in 1991 and later from Indiana Wesleyan University with a Master’s degree in theology. He achieved the highest honor of Summa Cum Laude from both universities. He often said, “How did a poor boy from South Shelby graduate from college with a masters degree? The answer is only by the grace of God!” He began his ministry journey at the age of 30. He served as youth pastor and music director at Glenwood Wesleyan Church in Easley, SC while attending SWU. His first senior pastorate was Rockingham Wesleyan Church in Rockingham, NC 1991-1995. Then he was called to First Wesleyan Church of Kings Mountain and served 1995-2023. He retired after serving 28 years in April 2023 due to his health. Before accepting the call into the ministry he was employed by Artex International of Boiling Springs as a Plant Supervisor and later as the Plant Manager 1984-1991. He was employed by Fiber Industries 1973-1982. He served in the National Guard at the Kings Mountain Unit 1972-1979. He loved going to Williamsburg, VA, Cades Cove and Pigeon Forge TN, playing golf at the beach, and taking the family to Forest City and McAdenville NC at Christmas time. He visited every

Christmas store he could. He loved watching Christmas movies all year long and also loved when the Christmas songs started to play on the radio. His family was always ready to join in singing Christmas songs when he picked up his guitar during the holiday season. He started a lot of traditions during the Christmas season, such as treating the whole family with breakfast at Cracker Barrel on Christmas Eve. In 2006, he bought farm land in Grover, NC. He found joy in plowing, planting and watching the crop grow. He put out game cameras to watch all the wildlife that would eat the fruit of his labor. Don wanted to make sure the land was ready for deer hunting, one of his favorite pastimes with his son and grandson. He enjoyed taking his wife fishing and to play golf. But his greatest joy was to preach the word of God, share the gospel, lead others to Christ and to disciple. He loved his family, his friends, and his loving supportive church family with all his heart. He will be sorely missed by all the lives he touched. A worship service honoring his life will be on Saturday October 10 at First Wesleyan Church at 505 N. Piedmont Ave, Kings Mountain, NC. Visitation will begin at 1:30 with service following at 3:00. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to First Wesleyan Church Kings Mountain, NC or St. Jude’s Children Hospital. His last words would be from Matthew 6:33 “Seek first the kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need.” NLT May he rest in peace. To God be the glory!

He was a wonderful husband who loved truly, laughed heartily and lived life to the fullest. Tommy was a master barber and owner/operator of Barbershops in the Charleston SC area before returning home to Kings Mountain in 1998. He was most recently Owner/Operator of “The Barber Shop” on Piedmont Avenue in Kings Mountain for 27 years. His customers lovingly gave him the title of the fastest barber in town and said he gave the very best 5 minute haircut. Tommy nurtured deep connections with his customers and could often be found at their homes or nursing homes servicing clients that became homebound or hospitalized. Affectionately known as “Mr. Tommy” by his “mini” clients, he looked forward to seeing them come in to challenge him to water gun fights or giggle when he would talk to them with his Donald Duck voice. He delighted in their hugs, giving them suckers and watching them grow into young men. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them laughing and reminiscing about growing up and old

times. Tommy could be heard anytime singing or humming his favorite old gospel, county or Elvis tunes. Tommy was a member of First Baptist Church in Kings Mountain. He loved the Lord and although he was unable to attend church for some time prior to his passing, his faith was resolute and unwavering which led to his final journey to heaven. Though our hearts are heavy with loss, we find comfort knowing that Tommy’s life was one well-lived, and his love well-shared. Changing Season. Same Calling: Remember There is one truth we all hate to face but is impossible to run from; we aren’t as young as we once were, as our bodies Pastor often remind Stephen Littlejohn Battleground us. It is an Community Church ever-present threat to begin to believe that though I once was active and energetic to serve the Lord, now my mind and body are plagued with reminders of present limitations and constant doctor visits. We can begin to buy into, “ Let’s just leave it

to the next generation.” Did that which God once called us to accomplish and enjoy somehow change with all the difficult seasons that seem to be ever blowing into our lives? Remember, God’s faithfulness remains unchanged, assuring us even in our hardest seasons. Let’s take a look at someone in a similar situation in Psalm 71. The Psalmist has labored hard their whole life to trust, follow, and hope in the Lord, but the enemies have kept coming, and his strength is not what it used to be. How can we keep our calling in hard seasons? Well, the first lesson we’ll look at this week is our call to remember. In verse 17, the Psalmist is remembering their

youth, saying, “O God, from my youth you have taught me, and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds.” What does he remember? The truth of Scripture they learned as a child is still true, and he still proclaims it. There is our first reminder; our calling to taste and see and declare the truth of Scripture is still our chief calling in life. In fact, the hard seasons we are weathering give us an even greater platform and credibility to suffer and still proclaim God’s goodness. The second reminder is found in verse 18 when it says, “So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to

all those to come.” This tired, needy Psalmist asks God for his presence and strength until he finishes what God has called him to do. What is that? He desires to teach the next generation about God’s goodness and faithfulness. So, dear Christian, who has God placed in your life who needs you to give them the unchanging truth and hope that has sustained you? Just give them the gospel

and your life, and that is enough.

Our Mission: Moms In Prayer International impacts children and schools worldwide for Christ by gathering mothers to pray.

We are not called to give people what we do not have, but to give freely what has been given to us! Remember and proclaim!

Eagle Scout project transforms the grounds at Life Enrichment Center Kings Mountain with new Enrichment Garden The Life Enrichment Center in Kings Mountain recently received a meaningful and beautifully executed improvement thanks to the dedication of Elijah Propst, an Eagle Scout candidate from Kings Mountain. Elijah, son of Joshua and Stephanie Propst, completed a major service project that has transformed part of the center’s outdoor space into what staff are proudly calling the Enrichment Garden. After assisting with a project here last year, Elijah reached out more than a year ago to begin planning his own project—one that would enhance the outdoor environment for participants, visitors, and the

¼ cup fresh lemon juice ¼ cup tahini 1 small garlic clove, minced or finely grated 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, plus more for serving ½ teaspoon ground cumin Pinch cayenne pepper, optional 2 to 3 tablespoons water or aquafaba Salt to taste • In the bowl of a food processor, combine the tahini and lemon juice and process for 1 minute. Scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl, then process for 30 seconds more. This extra time helps “whip” or “cream” the tahini, making the hummus smooth and creamy. • Add the olive oil, minced garlic, cumin, cayenne, and a ½ teaspoon of salt to the whipped tahini and lemon juice. Process for 30 seconds, scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl, and then process for another 30 seconds or until well blended.

• Add half of the chickpeas to the food processor and process for 1 minute. Scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl, then add the remaining chickpeas and process them until thick and relatively smooth, 1 to 2 minutes. • Add the roughly chopped roasted peppers, saving 1 to 2 pieces for use as a garnish. Process until smooth. • The hummus will likely be too thick and still have tiny bits of chickpea. To fix this, slowly add 2 to 3 tablespoons of cold water or aquafaba with the food processor turned on until you reach the perfect consistency. Taste and adjust as needed. • Finely chop the reserved peppers. Spoon hummus into a bowl, make a small well in the middle and add the chopped peppers. •Store homemade hummus in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to one week. Freeze, covered with a thin layer of olive oil, for up to one month.

One of the popup booths near the visitor center was staffed by three 18th-century clothing clad ladies with the Camden (SC) Historical Foundation. They had a variety of Rev War era housewares on display as well as a zither played by member Liz Canada. “We attend events like this in places like Waxhaw, 96 Historic Park, and Cowpens,” said Canada. “It’s a great way to reach out and show history.” In addition to the living history camp, other weekend activities included guided battlefield tours, lectures, Liberty Mountain performers, a lantern tour, musket shooting (blanks) and book readings by noted authors. On October 7, the 246th commemoration continued with the traditional wreath-laying ceremony at the monument on top of Kings Mountain. The ceremony also included remarks from members of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Sons of the American Revolution. Later in the afternoon, the Overmountain Victory Trail Association held its annual Commemorative March. Overall, the events were a fine display of historical enthusiasm and proof that patriotism is alive and well.

Women’s varsity volleyball takes Men’s JV soccer team two matches from Gaston County notches first win of season By Jimmy Black It was a good week for the Kings Mountain varsity women’s volleyball team. The Lady Mountaineers swept a pair of matches over Gaston County opponents. On Tuesday, September 29, the Mounties defeated the North Gaston Wildcats at home by a score of 3-0 (2516, 25-8, 25-11). Then on Thursday, October 1, Kings Mountain took care of the Ashbrook Green Wave over in Gastonia, also by a score of 3-0 (25-13, 25-7, 25-6). In the win over North Gaston, the Mountaineers were led by Avaclaire Moss who had 5 aces and 7 assists. Jillian Patton contributed

with 4 aces. Zyah Norman and Campbell Benton each had 4 kills, and Coleman Lane had 5 kills and a block. With the loss, North Gaston drops to 3-12 on the season and 3-6 in the Big South 5A/6A Conference. The Wildcats will host South Point in its season finale on Tuesday at 6:00 pm. Against Ashbrook, the Mountaineers were led by Caroline Lane who had 6 kills, 4 aces, 4 digs and 2 kills. Other Mountaineer contributors included Campbell Benton with 9 kills and 1 dig; Avery Cruise had 6 kills; Alana Laughridge had 4 aces and 7 digs; Georgia Cruise had 6 digs; Charley Burgess

had 11 assists; Kaylee Mull had 9 assists; and Avaclaire Moss had 9 assists. Kings Mountain now has a record of 6-3 in the Big South 5A/6A Conference, and they are 9-13 overall. The Mountaineers played at Forestview last night, and they will travel to Hunter Huss to take on the Huskies on Thursday night. Then on Saturday, the Kings Mountain Women will travel to Piedmont, SC for the Woodmont Pink Is Power Tournament. The Mounties will conclude their regular season on Tuesday night at home as they host the Crest Chargers.
