OPINION Pieces of Kings Mountain History TODAY’S QUOTE:

Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgivings, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings. –William Arthur Ward

As a member of the Col. Frederick Hambright DAR chapter, I’m LORETTA deeply interCOZART ested in the Battle of Kings Mountain. Ida Pauline Neisler was the first Regent of our chapter in 1916, and her half-sister, Bonnie Eloise Mauney Summers was the first historian. Growing up in Kings Mountain during the 1960s and 1970s sparked my love for this community’s history and its people. I remember reading Bonnie Summers’s work on the forefathers of our city and trying to imagine what life in Kings Mountain was like in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. I wasn’t sure why these ladies chose to form our DAR chapter in 1916, but I knew they had hoped to name the chapter the “Kings Mountain Chapter” or the “Kings Mountain Battle Chapter,” but the name was already taken by an existing DAR Chapter in York, SC. So, they decided to name the chapter for Col. Frederick Hambright, “because six Charter members were of lineal descent” and because they considered him “one of the bravest officers in the battle.” I stumbled across a pamphlet at the Library of Congress online entitled “Battle at King’s Mountain, Proposed Centennial Celebration, October 7, 1880.” To my surprise, I realized the people who conceived the centennial celebration came from the City of Kings Mountain. Imagine that! Just five years after the city received its charter on February 11, 1874, our citizens became the catalyst for the 1880 celebration of the Battle of Kings Mountain. While reading the program, I found the following passage. I have taken the liberty of using the gentlemen’s full names when I knew them. “A meeting of the citizens of Kings

Mountain and vicinity, on Saturday, May 24th, 1879, to take the initiatory steps towards the celebration of the centennial of the battle of Kings Mountain. Dr. James Wright Tracy was called to the chair; Isaac Walton Garrett and William Andrew Mauney were appointed secretaries.” Others noted in the meeting were Capt. William T. Reilley Bell, Dr. Benjamin Franklin Dixon, P.S. Baker, Dr. T.J. Walker, F.S. McGinnis, and R. S. Sugg. The meeting was held at Mauney Bros. Store at 213 S. Battleground Avenue. A second meeting was planned for July 25, 1879, and in that meeting the King’s Mountain Centennial Association was formed. The Executive Committee included the governors of Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Committees on “Invitations and Correspondence”, “Ways and Means”, “Historical Records and Relics”, “Monument”, “Troops”, “Police”, and “Transportation” were formed. The planners clearly knew that, to succeed, they needed influential men of means from across the region to bring their goal to life. They appointed Colonel Asbury Coward, the esteemed co-founder of the Kings Mountain Military School, as president to command the massive logistical undertaking. To pull off a grandscale commemoration on a rugged mountain that had spent a century locked in quiet overgrowth, these committee men engineered a brilliant dual-state funding strategy. They successfully lobbied the South Carolina Legislature to secure a $1,000 appropriation on February 20, 1880, which North Carolina proudly answered just a month later with a matching $1,500 grant. The remaining balance of the total $2,800 construction cost was raised out of pocket through private local subscriptions managed by the committee’s

families. This financial coordination allowed the association to purchase 39.5 acres of the battlefield ridge from the Goforth family for $197.50. Before this acquisition, dense virgin hardwood trees, predominantly white oaks and chestnut trees that witnessed the intense 1780 combat, had been cleared from the ridge, forcing planners to meticulously prepare a cleared vista for the incoming crowds. As the calendar turned to the autumn of 1880, the physical footprint of their triumph completely transformed the rocky crest. At the highest point of the ridge, marking the area of the sharpest fighting, contractor F.A. McNinch of Charlotte erected a brandnew twenty-eight-foot Centennial Monument made of local Piedmont granite. Interestingly, the original architectural plans called for a bronze statue of an American Patriot soldier to crown the apex, but the association ultimately ran out of funds before it could be cast. Instead, its gleaming white marble tablet slabs stood alone, meticulously hauled from Vermont to bear the chiseled names of the fallen. Months before the grand October unveiling, a lesser-known but massive ritual took place on the mountain on June 23, 1880. The Grand Lodge of Ancient Free Masons of South Carolina orchestrated a daunting, sixteen-mile solemn procession to lay and consecrate the monument’s core foundation stone. According to their official ledger registers, the Masons permanently sealed a heavy copper time capsule deep within the cornerstone. Press coverage across the Carolinas cataloged its unique contents, ensuring future generations would know it held original letters, local civic registers, and scripts detailing early, forgotten local anniversary efforts dating back to 1815 and 1855.

James H. Moser’s illustration of the Kings Mountain centennial celebration was featured on the cover of Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper on October 13, 1880. When the sun finally rose on Centennial Day, an unprecedented wave of twelve to fifteen thousand visitors poured off the passenger cars of the Atlanta and Richmond

Air-Line Railway at our downtown depot, where a fleet of wagons ferried them seven miles south to the mountain’s base. It was at that moment, reading through

My wife and I bought my dad a jacket for his birthday and he got to wear it about three months before he died. My brother-in-law ended up with the jacket because it was a good fit. He wore it for several years before he died. I think it is satisfying if we can pass on something that someone else can use for a while. If you have stuff that you have not used or worn in a couple of years then what is the point of it taking up space? I do have a couple of suits I have held on to because, if I can just lose ten pounds, I will be able to wear them again. Sadly, it sure is taking me a long time to lose the ten pounds, but maybe eventually I will. We can’t take anything with us when our lives end. We came into the world with nothing and we leave with nothing. Living in peace with God and man is the best we can do internally and externally. Everything else, is just stuff. Congressman Tim Moore urges Navy to name new ship after the Battle of Kings Mountain Congressman Tim Moore (NC-14) wrote a letter urging the U.S. Department of the Navy to name an upcoming ship the USS Kings Mountain, honoring the Battle of Kings Mountain in North Carolina. Fought on October 7, 1780, the battle was a pivotal American victory during the Revolutionary War, with Thomas Jefferson describing it as the “turn of the tide of success” in the War of Independence. “As our Nation marks its 250th birthday, that history deserves recognition in the naval fleet. The USS Kings Mountain is a natural fit for

an amphibious assault ship or amphibious transport dock, consistent with the Navy's tradition of naming these platforms after significant military victories... The communities of Western North Carolina take great pride in this heritage,” Congressman Moore wrote in the letter. by the Library Committee, Senate Report 557, Sixtieth Congress, First Session, Mr. Swanson reported: “It was a battle in which there was not a regular soldier of the American Army but was fought solely by the people of a few States who helped to create the country and to win its independence.” I find it humbling that the citizens of Kings Mountain continue to associate themselves so closely with the Battle of Kings Mountain, not to boast or brag. We do so to honor those patriots who sacrificed much for our freedom.

These men left their families during the height of harvest season, with the possibility of Indian raids imminent, to put an end to the threats issued to them by Maj. Patrick Ferguson. Maj. William Chronicle and Col. Frederick Hambright, with their “Lincoln County Militia”, were chosen to lead the men to Little Kings Mountain to meet and defeat Ferguson. They did their job and quickly returned home to their families, without desire for fanfare or praise. To them, God, Home, and Country meant everything.

Changing Season. Same Calling: Trust Last week we began to ask ourselves if our biblical calling is lost or diminished as we age or go through diffiPastor cult seasons. Stephen Littlejohn We looked Battleground at P s a l m Community Church 71, which challenged us to remember that truth never changes even if we do, and so we

always carry the call to proclaim the truth to our friends, neighbors and especially the younger generation. So then we first remember, and now secondly, we trust. Isaiah 46:3-4 helps us see and apply this aspect of our calling. This text is radically God-centered, and that’s exactly the kind of truth we need when everything around us changes. God reminds his people that he chose and preserved them even before we existed, and that he can be trusted to carry us even into old age. To trust Him, meditate on His

promises, pray for His strength, and lean on His presence daily. Verse 4: “Even to your old age I am he, and to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear; I will carry and will save.” We can see that God’s call to remember always leads us to trust Him more and more, even as our eyes fade and our energy wanes! The one who made us in the womb is still carrying us now. Though we grow weary, he never does; though we stumble, He endures. The one who saved you all those years ago is still saving you

and promises to bring you safely home. So then, no matter the seasons of life, the call to remember gospel truth and proclaim it, and to lean back into the safe arms of our Mighty God and Father is just as true and precious today as it was the first time you believed.

Concertgoers can expect a mix of works including traditional band repertoire, Sousa marches, contemporary compositions, vocal and instrumental solos and a patriotic salute to the Armed Forces. “We have tremen-

Since Sousa was first granted permission to tour the country by President Benjamin Harrison in 1891, “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band has delivered a White House experience from Washington, D.C., to the far-reaching corners of our nation, and these special concerts have been shared by generations of Americans. During the 30-day National Concert Tour, the Marine Band will perform 27 concerts

in the following states: Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Alabama. The Marine Band is America’s oldest continuously active professional musical organization. Founded in 1798, the band has performed for every U.S. President since John Adams. Known as “The President’s Own” since the days of Thomas Jefferson, the Marine Band’s mission is to provide music for the President of the United States and the Commandant of the Marine Corps. Mountaineers defeat Ashbrook 35-8, face strong South Point team Friday Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers rolled over the Ashbrook Green Wave 35-8 Friday night and will face a strong Belmont South Point team this Friday at John Gamble Stadium. This is the final regular season home game for the Mountaineers. After this week, they will close out their regular season on the road against Hunter Huss and Crest. The Green Wave was rolling after the opening kickoff and had a first and goal at the Mountaineer nine. KM’s defense forced the Green Wave to try a field goal on a fourth and five from the eight yard line but it failed at the 7:56 mark. Ashbrook later survived a field goal attempt by the Mountaineers at the 1:09 mark of the first quarter. After holding the Wave

to three and out, the Mountaineers took control of the ball at their own 38 yard line and three plays later broke the scoreless tie on a 14yard TD reception by Tony Boyd. After another three and out by the Green Wave, KM took possession at its own 35 and needed just four plays to score again on a 13yard touchdown by quarterback Jordan Jenkins. Ashbrook had another good drive going but KM recovered a fumbled pass at the KM eight yard line. From its own 14, quarterback Jordan Jenkins hooked up with receiver Xavier Hutchens for an 86-yard catch and run and a 21-0 Mountaineer lead that stood until halftime. Midway of the third period, Kings Mountain’s Daeshawn Camp recovered a fumble at the Mountaineer

29 and Hutchens took a first down pass from Jenkins for a 28-0 KM lead. A 12-yard TD reception by Hutchens increased the score to 35-0 at the 4:36 mark and put the running clock rule into effect. Ashbrook was able to cut the margin to 35-8 early in the fourth quarter on a 96yard run by Zyere Dixon and a two-point conversion. The Mountaineer players of the game were Jordan Jenkins (offense), Jaheim Kirk (defense), Xavier Hutchens (overall), and Kingston Moore (special teams). KM’s final home game of the regular season against a very strong South Point team will probably be the Mountaineers’ toughest test to date. These two teams have a long history of playing hard-hitting, close games against each other.

KM volleyball picks up 2 road wins By Jimmy Black The Kings Mountain Ladies’ Tennis Team hosted the State Tennis Pre-Regionals that took place on Monday, October 5 at the KMHS Tennis Complex. The Mountaineers’ lone singles entry, Cindy Tipton, defeated her opponent from Olympic High School by the score of 6-0, 6-3. As for the lone doubles’ entry, Shiloh Bridges and Markie Wampler defeated their opponents from Olympic by the score of 6-1, 6-1. The top three Kings Mountain singles players, Alice Frye, Grayson Howell and Seanna Simon, earned a bye to the West

Regionals due to their overall record in the Big South 5A/6A Conference. Frye and Simon had a record of 5-0 in doubles, and Howell went 6-1 in singles. The West Regionals will be held at Watauga High School in Boone on Friday, October 16 and Saturday, October 17. In order to advance to Saturday’s action, a singles player or doubles team has to win two rounds on Friday. As for the first round of the Dual Team match that was scheduled for Monday, October 12, the Lady Mountaineers earned a first-round bye and will now compete in the second round of the Dual Team competition today. More

than likely, Kings Mountain will be hosting the fifth seeded team in the West Regionals. The Regionals are for individual play, and the Dual Team competition is a team concept which feeds the NCHSAA State Championships. The Women Mountaineers finished the regular season with a record of 6-1, losing only to Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy. They captured their third straight Big South 5A/6A Conference Championship this year by defeating Hunter Huss on September 30 by a score of 9-0. Kings Mountain has now won eight conference championships in the last twelve seasons.

KM men’s Varsity soccer victorious over Stuart Cramer By Jimmy Black The Kings Mountain Varsity Men’s Soccer team snapped a five-game losing streak on Thursday night, October 8, with a home victory over the Stuart Cramer Storm by the score of 1-0 in non-conference action. With the win, the Mountaineers improved to 3-15-1 on the season, while the Storm fell to 5-10-1. Stuart Cramer next has a home date with Highland Tech tonight at 6:00 pm. Earlier in the week, Kings Mountain went to Belmont and fell to the South Point Red Raiders 4-0. For South Point, they were led by Micheal Guerra who scored two goals. Caleb Savin and Matthew Hackney also contributed one goal each.

Caleb Debbold, Tanner Layman and Syrus Johnson each had one assist for the Red Raiders. For the Mountaineers, there were not many bright spots. Ever Guzman, however, had 18 shots fired at him by the South Point team, only allowing four of them to reach the back of the net. With the win, South Point improves to 13-2 overall on the season, and 8-0 in first place in the Big South 5A/6A Conference. The Mountaineers fall to 1-6 in conference play. Up next for the Raiders, they will be hosting the Ashbrook Green Wave on Monday, October 19 at 6:30 pm. Kings Mountain will be visiting Ashbrook tonight for a 6:30 pm kickoff.

Mountaineer women’s golf team participates in match held in Cherryville

By Jimmy Black The Kings Mountain Women’s Tennis Team faced off with the Hunter Huss Lady Huskies on September 30 as the Lady Mounties were one win away from winning their third consecutive Big South Conference Championship. The starting six student athletes were all very excited to compete against Huss simply because the original match was postponed due to inclement weather conditions. The Lady Mounties overpowered the Huskies by winning six singles matches led by Alice Frye, Grayson Howell, Cindy Tipton, Shiloh Bridges, Markie Wampler and Lucy Santiago.

The Mountaineers also captured all three of the doubles matches led by Frye/Seanna Simon, Howell/Wampler, and Iris Doupe/Sloan Wampler. Yes, the ladies came away with the victory against Hunter Huss, but more importantly, they went undefeated in conference play this year, in addition to the last two seasons for an overall record of 18 wins and no losses over the course of the last three years! Coach Rick Henderson remarked, “So, winning eight Big South Conference Championships in the last twelve seasons will go into the record books!!!” Indeed, it is a remarkable achievement!

Simple Ways to Soothe Bunion Pain Dear Savvy Senior, I’m a 62-year-old woman and have had a bunion on my big toe for years, but lately it’s become more painful and is making it hard to find comfortable shoes. I’d like to avoid surgery if possible. What can I do to ease the discomfort and keep it from getting worse? --Sore Toe Susan Dear Susan, You’re not alone. Bunions are very common, especially among women, and they often become more painful with age as the joint shifts out of alignment and inflammation sets in. What may have started as a minor nuisance can turn into ongoing discomfort, making it difficult to find shoes that fit comfortably.

A bunion, known medically as hallux valgus, is a bony bump that forms at the base of the big toe when the joint moves out of place, causing the toe to angle inward. Over time, this pushes the joint outward, creating the noticeable bump.

Why it happens While tight or narrow shoes can make bunions worse, they’re usually not the root cause. Genetics plays a major role, which is why bunions often run in families. Other factors like flat feet, arthritis, and past foot injuries can also contribute. Women tend to be more prone to them, partly due to years of wearing high heels or shoes with narrow toe boxes. The good news is that most bunions can be

managed without surgery, especially if your goal is to ease symptoms and slow their progression.

Simple relief The first place to start is with your shoes. Switching to footwear with a wide toe box, soft materials, and good arch support can make a big difference, while high heels and tight shoes that crowd your toes should be avoided. It can also help to shop later in the day, when your feet are slightly swollen, for a more realistic fit. Beyond footwear, a few simple steps can help ease the pressure. Padding the area with over-the-counter bunion cushions can reduce friction, and if the joint becomes sore or swollen, icing it for 10 to

15 minutes a few times a day may bring relief. Anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen can also help, if your doctor says they are appropriate for you. To further reduce strain, orthotic inserts, either store-bought or custom, can improve how your foot distributes weight. Toe spacers can also help by keeping the toes in a more natural position, while a night splint, such as Dr. Scholl’s Bunion Relief & Toe Corrector (about $20), can gently guide the big toe into better alignment while you sleep. It may also help to rotate your shoes rather than wearing the same pair every day, reducing repeated pressure. In addition, gentle exercises,

such as stretching your toes, picking up small objects, or rolling your foot over a tennis ball, can help maintain flexibility. It is important to keep expectations realistic. These steps will not eliminate a bunion, but they can make it more manageable. When to get help If your bunion pain interferes with daily activities, or if you are developing corns, calluses or ongoing inflammation, it is wise to see a podiatrist or orthopedic specialist. They can evaluate the severity and recommend additional treatments. Also seek care if you notice redness, warmth or significant swelling, which could signal irritation or infection

around the joint.

Surgery is typically advised only when conservative measures no longer provide relief. Today’s procedures are more advanced than in the past and are often done on an outpatient basis, though recovery can up to six months and bunions can sometimes recur. In the meantime, taking steps to protect your feet can go a long way. With the right care, many people are able to manage bunions effectively and stay comfortable, active and on their feet.
