Except for wide receiver Xavier Johnson, Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers lost all of their offensive statistical leaders from last year’s team, but each time Coach Greg Lloyd sees his younger players who are expected to step up and fill the gaps he gets more excited. The Mountaineers will have new people at every backfield position this season as well as new receivers to go with Johnson, a junior who led the Mountaineers in receiving with 55 catches for 871 yards last year. With two years remaining, Johnson is already over half-way to becoming the school’s all-time career receiving leader Many of those who will be asked to step up are freshmen and returning players who saw most of their playing time at other positions
last year. When the Mountaineers open their regular season Friday night at home against Hunter Huss they will likely have freshman Darian McClain at tailback, freshman Jake Merchant at split end and freshman Trevon Wilson at fullback. In addition, their new quarterback, junior Brandon Bell, didn’t play organized football until a year ago when he came out for the JV team and ended up starting every game for them. All of the young players have made tremendous strides in the summer workout sessions and pre-season practice. Lloyd likes what they bring to the team. He’s anxious to see them improve every game and be key contributors for the next three years as well. The good thing about having young skill people is that the Mountaineers have
experience on the offensive and defensive line. Most starting linemen have varsity experience and may start both ways. “I’m very optimistic,� says Lloyd. “I am happy to have a lot of young guys that are going to be around for a while. I’m liking the energy we have with these young guys. They are a really talented group. “We will improve as the year goes on. We’re doing a lot of fundamentals and teaching in practice. We’re not doing a lot of live work in practice because most of them are going to be going both ways and we want them to be fresh and healthy on Friday night. I’m going to do my best to not get anybody hurt in practice.� Lloyd said he also loves the players’ attitudes. “I know we’re going to experience some growing pains but we have the opportunity to

have a good year. I’m excited about our chances.� The Mountaineers will be competing in the new SMAC 2A/3A after being in the Big South 3A the past four years. He knows the Cleveland County teams will be powerful and was impressed with R-S Central in a recent scrimmage. “I feel like Chase and East Rutherford will have a good team,� he said. “I believe this will be a good
league top to bottom.� Most of Kings Mountain’s linemen have varsity experience, and many of them started last year. Junior Corey Hester moves into the starting center position vacated by 2013 graduate Wilson Rikard. Mason Fleisher and Nick Postell return at guard and Douglas Edgerton will pull starting duty there as well. All-Big South junior Graham Keeter, who is being
looked at by Clemson and Florida State, returns at tackle along with Chaz Gamble. Kahlil Hopper, who got a late start due to injuries suffered in a wreck, will start at tight end (Roy Back) and Jason Coulter and Chance Frederick will spend time there, also. Tico Crocker, a junior, returns at the slot receiver and has senior Jordan Ford as his back-up. Johnson and freshman Jake Merchant will be the split ends, but also expect a lot of exciting catches and runs from senior Kenneh Dimetros. Bell will be backed up at quarterback by Merchant and freshman Darren Burns, who will also be the starting QB on the JV team. Gamble, Postell and Wilson will be at defensive tackle and Coulter, Josh Bell and Hopper will be at defensive end. Elijah Whitaker is the only returner at linebacker where he’ll be joined by sophomore Bryan Sanders. Hopper and McClain will also pull duty at linebacker. Frederick will be the strong side safety, with Dwayne Capps backing him up. Crocker will start at weak safety and Johnson at free safety. Merchant will start at corner with Ford and Taylor Smith seeing a lot of playing time there. Soccer players Isaiah Cole and Cameron Hord will handle the punting and placekicking chores and Crocker, Johnson and possibly Ford will be the return specialists. Freshman Cooper Short will be the long snapper and Brandon Bell will be the holder. Lloyd hopes the Mountaineers will have a great opening game Friday at home against Hunter Huss and get better every day after that. “This is going to be a good team for us this season,� Lloyd said. “We have a young team and we’re playing in a new league and we’re going to be in a new field house soon. This is an exciting time for Kings Mountain football. We’re going to have eight offensive guys back and about that many more on defense so the future looks very good. This is going to be a fun season for these young men.�

Kings Mountain High volleyball players are confident the third time will be the charm as they prepare for their first season in the South Mountain Athletic Conference. In their first two years under head coach Ashley Pridgeon the Lady Mountaineers had good regular seasons - winning the Big South 3A once and finishing second once - but fell in the first round of the state 3A playoffs both seasons. Pridgeon is carrying just ten players on varsity - seven seniors and three juniors - but most of them have been with her for three years. All of them are key players in what they do. They’re all strong in their own Adrienne Green way.” That’s why Pridgeon isn’t worried that she’s carrying only ten players. They are all solid at their position. Going into a new conference makes Pridgeon wish volleyball coaches traded film. She is not as familiar with that league as she is the Big South. In the SMAC, a split 2A/3A conference, the Lady Mountaineers will be renewing rivalries that existed for years. Betzaira Saenz Until the NCHSAA went to a four-year realignment system Kings Mountain played in the Southwestern Conference against Shelby, Burns, Crest, East Rutherford, R-S Central and Chase. They will begin rivalries with East Burke and Draughn. Kings Mountain and R-S Central had some memorable battles in the old SWC. Usually the conference race came down Logan Smith to those two teams, and then for a fouryear period when the traditional SWC teams were placed in the Southwestern Foothills Conference Fred T. Foard was added to the mix. “I am somewhat familiar with the (SMAC) teams we’ve played before, but I’m not familiar with all of them,” Pridgeon said. “But I feel like we should be near the top of the conference.” Taquisha Smith

Athletic Conference this fall. Veteran coach Dan Potter, who started the Mountaineer soccer program in 1989 and coached them to two conference championships and 79 victories in eight years before building a girls soccer powerhouse here, feels this

The players worked hard in the weight room under strength and conditioning coach Ted Trahan, as well as on the field during the off-season. “We recently held a Lifta-Thon and the kids raised over $1,500 for the soccer team,” Potter said. “A lot of time and energy went into that. They have improved

Runners plan to keep pace with the competition GARY STEWART sports.kmherald@gmail.com
Kings Mountain High’s cross country runners are working hard preparing for their first season in the SMAC 2A/3A Conference. Veteran coach Rayvis Kee has a large group of girls who should make a run for the SMAC championship. The boys team is lean in numbers but has some good runners. The runners open their season August 24 in the Western North Carolina Cross Country Carnival at Jackson Park in Hendersonville against some of the top teams from North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia. “This is a huge event and we’re fortunate to be a part of it and see that kind of competition,” says Key.
The Mountaineers host Big South 3A power Ashbrook, along with East Gaston and Hunter Huss, on September 3 and will host the SMAC pre-conference meet on September 10. “Our girls finished second to Ashbrook in the Big South the past two years and that will give us a chance to see each other before the Regionals,” Key said. “Hosting the pre-conference meet will let us see how we’re going to stack up in the (SMAC) conference.” Key says the Mountaineers will have a hard time replacing graduating senior Logan McGill. “He was kind of our senior leader and best runner last year and left a big hole,” Key said. “I’m not sure who’s going to fill it.” Jordan Moore and Collin Foster return and they may
step up. Other returning seniors are Devin Ayscue, Will Boyles and Noah Coleman. Other members of the team are Joshua Brucker, Matthew Burris, Nicholas Chanthavong, and Jacob Edmondson. “We have a small group,” Key said, “but the competition is getting better. Key expects his girls team to be one of the frontrunners in the SMAC. They are led by junior Cassie Morton, who was the Big South MVP both her freshman and
sophomore years. “She’s going to find - as individuals go - that it’s going to be much tougher to win in the SMAC,” Key said. “There’s some tough competition in the SMAC. Shelby and Draughn both have some excellent runners that are in her class. “As a team, it would be good to squeak out that conference championship,” Key said. “Ashbrook won the (Big South) the last two years. We will be hosting the SMAC conference champi-
onship this year and hopefully that will give us the edge. It’s probably going to come down to us and Shelby.” Key has several other seasoned runners who will be right up there with Morton as the team leaders. McKenzie Smith has experience and usually finishes second among KM runners. Katie Ellis, Annamarie Fulbright, Molly Short and Spencer Burton also have experience. Other members of the
team are Laura Blaine, Kayla Capps, Erica Carpenter, Virginia Dellinger, Carmen Henwood, Jessica Lovell, Amanda Mullen, Radhika Patel, Montanna Smith, Lori “McKay” Williams, Alley Wray and Brooke Patterson. “Our girls team is 18-19 strong,” Key said. “It’s a really good group. We’re really excited to about our freshmen. We have five or six that ran on an undefeated team at the middle school last year.”

Lady Mountaineers look forward to promising season Kings Mountain High's women's tennis team hopes to fare well this fall in the new South Mountain Athletic Conference. Sixth-year head coach
Rick Henderson has five starters back from last year's team as well as some promising newcomers. "I'm not sure how competitive the new conference
will be compared to the Big South," Henderson said. "but we are looking forward to it." Returning starters include Madison Lutz, Han-
nah Christenbury, Kayla Penner, Hannah Mosley and Alyssa Greene. "Last year, both Lutz and Penner earned their way to the West Regionals as a
doubles team and I look for even better things from them," Coach Henderson said. "There are two incoming freshmen (Carrigan
Leatherman and Kayla Condrey) that look to be very promising. They have a very good chance to break into the starting lineup as well as Tiffany Harris, Kayla Smith, Cheyanne Stirewalt and Sharda Whiteside. MC Dellineger returns to the team after taking last year off to concentrate on her studies. But she is determined to crack the starting lineup." The Lady Mountaineers recently competed in a preseason round robin tournament at Shelby High School. They were scheduled to open their regular season yesterday with a non-conference match at Lincolnton.

Golf team looks to add players to the roster Kings Mountain High’s golf team needs some players when it begins preseason practice after the first day of school, Monday, Aug. 26. Coach Kevin Moss has only two players at present, and he is pleased with the way they have improved every year since they began playing. More players are needed for the Mountaineers to be competitive as a team. But, Moss is confident his two returning players - Madison Lutz and Sarah Scism - will be competitive as individuals. Both are juniors and have shown consistent improvement since they took up the sport. This will be their third year playing for Coach Moss. Lutz made the All-Big South Conference team and qualified for the Western Regional Tournament the past two seasons. Last year she qualified for the North Carolina State Championship tournament and finished 33rd overall in the 3A division. “Although Sarah hasn’t qualified for the regional tournament yet, she continues to get better each year and is very close to qualifying,� Coach Moss said. “Each year she gets closer to meeting the qualification to participate in the regional tournament. Hopefully this year will be the year she gets over the hump and qualifies.� Both players are great all-around athletes, Moss added. “Both do very well in school with their academics, both are involved in school clubs and band, and both are involved with other school sports,� he said. “Madison serves double duty in the fall with tennis and golf and Sarah plays golf in the fall, runs indoor track in the winter and plays softball in the spring.� Kings Mountain goes into the SMAC 2A/3A Conference

KM and Crest are 3A and Draughn and East Burke are 2A. “Although I don’t like the longer travel we will have going to Burke County, the girls do get a chance to play at a couple courses they have never played before,� Moss said. “It’s always exciting to get to play at new courses.� The Lady Mountaineers don’t normally start practice until the first day of school. Coach Potter works on conditioning with the 2013 Men’s Soccer Team. The team has been conditioning all summer. Queen, Luke Rikard, Will Robinson, Josh Scism, Jack Zyble and Hunter Champion. The Mountaineers have two sets of brothers Robbie and Bryan Lysek and Noah and Riley Coleman. Potter is proud of all of his players and how committed they are to turning the KMHS soccer program around. “It’s going to be interesting to see how this all comes together,”
he said. “I doubt if there’s a team in the state that works any harder than these kids have.” Potter is also thankful to his assistant coaches, Trahan, and Avery Turbyfill. Trahan is in his third season with the team also, and Potter says there’s no better strength and conditioning coach anywhere. Turbyfill played for Potter back in the 1990s and recently volunteered to help coach.
“We’re excited to have him,” Potter said. “He will be an excellent addition. When you have 30 kids you need three coaches. We’ll be able to do a lot of things with them.” As for the SMAC race, Potter says perennial 2A power Shelby will be the team to beat. But, he believes strongly that the Mountaineers can be in the race. “Shelby is definitely the cream of the crop,” he said. “They have had really good talent for a long time. “I haven’t seen East Burke play in years. They used to be good. Draughn is a second-year team. RS Central has been good in the past and Crest and Burns have some good players. I think it’s going to be up in the air. “I see us as being very competitive,” he added. “These kids have made a huge commitment to come out at 7 o’clock in the morning, five days a week. They basically spent their summer out here. A lot of progress has been made”
