July 26 Council work session covers zoning, truck parking, museum topics All done in preparation for Aug. 8’s regular Council session and voting The Cherryville City Council had their July 26 work session at the Fire Department’s training and conference room, discussing a short list of topics they will discuss in depth and vote on at their next regular session on Monday, Aug. 8. After the meeting was called to order by Mayor H.L. Beam, III, Council discussed the issue of placing “No Thru Trucks” signs on Main Street. The signs, if approved, will be found on the stretch of street from Rudisill and Main to W. Academy and Main, according to a photo included with

the agenda materials. City Manager Brian Dalton noted to representatives from McGinnis Furniture and to Council the problems with the trucks turning issues may be due to loss of street width as a result of the “bump outs” constructed on Main Street as part of the CMP’s Streetscape project. “There has been some room lost due to those,” noted Mr. Dalton. Mr. Dalton also brought to Council’s attention the discussion of rezoning 1407 E. Main St., request to change the zoning from its current status of B-3 (General Business District) to the proposed R-9 (Single and Two-Family Residential) in order for the applicant to convert the building to a dwelling. Mr. Dalton said the Planning and Zon-

ing Board voted to deny the request by the applicant citing its denial as due to the city’s Future Land Use Map (adopted on Aug. 13, 2012) which shows the property as continuing in the commercial zoning district. A letter was sent to the applicant on July 19, 2022 by Planning and Zoning Director Alex Blackburn to inform the applicant of the board’s decision. The Planning and Zoning Board, regarding the rezoning of 109 S. Jacob Street from a B-1 status (Central Business District) to the proposed R-O (Residential Office) status, asked Council that the zoning requested for this property be approved. The 134th President of the North Carolina State Firefighters’ Association, Quentin “Q” Cash, has served his one-year term as that august group’s leader and now leaves that post to become its Immediate Past President. He has, by all accounts, acquitted himself well in that position. Young Cash and his father Jeff, the retired fire chief of Cherryville and its past City manager, are the only father and son duo to have ever held the NCSFA’s highest office. According to the NCSFA website (ncsfa.com), the Executive Board for the North Carolina State Firefighters’ Association is comprised of nine members: President,

First Vice President, Second Vice President, three Regional Directors, Treasurer, Statistician, and Immediate Past President. Mr. Cash has moved through the ranks, serving in all capacities, being elected by the membership to serve the regional terms needed to be able to be elected take the helm of Shelby Battalion Chief, C Platoon, and the First and Secsoon-to-be the NCSFA’s Immediate ond Vice PresiPast President, Quentin Cash. dent’s positions, then being elected in the fire service since to the President’s position. 1995, starting as a junior “At the end of their year volunteer firefighter and long term as First Vice currently serving as AsPresident the delegate ausistant Chief of Training tomatically moves into the and Safety with the Cherposition of President and ryville Fire Department in then becomes the ImmeCherryville. Kim Eaker, a long-time community volunteer and member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, said recently that SJLC, along with other churches in Cherryville, has started the drive to collect

school supplies for needy kids. “School will be starting back before we know it,” said Ms. Eaker. “Unfortunately, many children will not have the school supplies that they need to be successful.” For many years now she and other like-minded individuals have endeavored to

give back to their community and help kids and their families in one of the best possible ways; provide school supplies – which can be a big cost for many families – to them in order to give them a muchneeded boost as they begin their school year. Said Eaker, “We, as Christ followers, are called
