The 2021 Cherryville Christmas Parade’s Grand Marshals have been chosen and they are the Lail Family, of Home Folks Café fame. It is a ‘first’ for them, though they said their dad’s truck was in a previous Christmas Parade. The Parade is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 11, starting at 10:30 a.m., and ending at 2 p.m., noted Chamber Director Mary Beth Tackett, who noted the Lail Family had been chosen for the unique honor. The three Lail siblings – Thomas, Sandra, and Janet – who are very pleased with the honor, said they were informed by the Cherryville

Chamber of Commerce as to their selection. They sat down recently with the Eagle and talked about the restaurant, started in Cherryville sometime in the ‘30’s they said. It was then bought by their father and mother, Roy and Doris Lail, who ran it and prepared all the meals and dishes for which they are famous, for 50 years. While Roy and Doris are – sadly – no longer with us, their children have continued the family tradition, having grown up working in the beloved restaurant, learning all the recipes, and keeping as true to them as possible. The three are quick to point out that while they and the restaurant get a lot of praise for the excellent See LAIL, Page 2

The Cherryville Chamber of Commerce has just released its information on the 2021 upcoming Christmas events in downtown Cherryville and it is, as Chamber President Mary Beth Tackett says, “Christmas Season is upon us!” Tackett, Downtown Director David Day, and company noted they have put together “…one big holiday season!” what with A VeryCherry-Who-Ville Christmas on Main Street and the always spectacular Cherryville Christmas Parade. They are excited the much-oved parade is making an appearance this year as COVID shut down the 2020 seasonal happenings. The Who-Ville event is scheduled (weather permitting) for Friday, Dec. 3, from 5 to 10 p.m., and the uber-popular Christmas Parade is scheduled (again, weather permitting) for Saturday, Dec. 11, at 10:30 a.m.

It’s Jolly Old Saint Nick! He always makes an appearance at every Cherryville Christmas Parade. (Eagle file photos by Michael E. Powell and Susan L. Powell) Said Tackett recently, “This Christmas season we will have the Christmas on Main Street – Who-Ville, on the date and time mentioned, and it will be held in the Mini-Park in Downtown Cherryville (219 East Main St.).” She continued, “Once again, we’ll uniquely celebrate the holidays with the theme of Dr. Seuss’ ‘WhoVille’, transforming Main Street and Downtown into a scene straight out of the Holiday Classic ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’! And on

Due to sometimes inclement weather, the Cherryville Main Street/Who-Ville experience has been known to go indoors, as in 2018’s event, which wound up being held at Cherryville’s First Baptist Church’s COC. In spite of that a great time was still had by all!

Saturday, Dec. 11, we’ll have another exciting Christmas Parade! Once again, it’ll be one of the biggest parades in the region. With floats, bands, beauty queens, Shriners, and of course, Santa Claus, and more!” Tackett said the Cherryville Christmas Parade celebrates another successful holiday season for Downtown Cherryville. She did note that “…these celebrations of community and holiday spirit are expensive promotions.” The City of Cherryville See HOLIDAYS, Page 6

Most people in the Lincoln/Gaston County area are familiar with the twohundred-year-old tradition of the New Year’s Shooters, but how many have a recollection of the long, lost tradition known as Christmas “Boogering”?

The passage of more than 50 years has not faded the memory of my Momma talking about Christmas “Boogering”. She talked of how when she was just a girl of going around to the neighbors in costume and “Boogering”. Momma never really went into detail about Christmas “Boogering” and unfortunately, we did not ask many questions. I decided to talk to people that I knew who were of the same generation as Momma. The first person that came to mind was See MEMORIES, Page 2

A vision that has been several years in the making is reality now with the official opening of the Gaston Early College of Medical Sciences. Representatives from Gaston County Schools and Gaston College came together on Tuesday, Sept. 28 for a ribbon cutting and open house celebration. They joined with partner organizations Belmont Abbey College and CaroMont Health to celebrate the county’s newest high school that boasts a healthcare focus.

“The Gaston Early College of Medical Sciences is the first step for our students to embark on a career journey into the medical field,” said principal Beverley Bowman. “Because of our partnership with Gaston College, Belmont Abbey College, and CaroMont Health, we are able to offer a specialized high school program to help meet the growing demand for people to work in the healthcare industry. This is an exciting time for Gaston County Schools and the Gaston County community.” A highlight during the ceremony was the unveiling of the school mascot See COLLEGE, Page 9

MEMORIES From Page 1 Kathryn Beam Sappenfield, a lifetime resident of Crouse, other than a few years in Winston Salem when her father was attending college. On Nov. 6, 2015, I visited with Kathryn and her husband Oscar Sappenfield at their home, situated on Old Hwy. 150, in Crouse. During the visit I had the opportunity to interview and record Kathryn as she recalled her memories of Christmas “Boogering”. The following is a partial transcription of that recorded interview. My first question to Kathryn was, “Do you remember Christmas ‘Boogering’?”, and with no hesitation she replied, “Oh honey, I saw Christmas ‘Boogering’. Carrie Lee McGinnis Tutherow was kinda the leader, she went out every year…she would dress up, just like we would dress up for Halloween except it was Christmas.” She went on to tell, “There were not very many people who went, but I know that Carrie Lee led the group, and they just came around like Halloween ‘boogers’ did.

They actually came to the door, knocked and visited a little while if they were invited in.” Kathryn went on to explain, “Now, they were not mean like we were as Halloween Boogers. But it was traditional every year for that group, and I have never heard anybody else even mention Christmas ‘Boogering’.” Kathryn had no memory of how long Carrie Lee continued Christmas Boogering, but she remembers her being a grown woman and still carrying out the tradition. Kathryn did not remember exactly what all was involved with Christmas Boogering but she thought that it was wonderful. She does recall that caroling was a part of the tradition. Kathryn also recalled that Carrie Lee and her mother were good friends and that she loved her. Peggy Sue, Carrie Lee’s daughter, could have told us more about Christmas Boogering because she would go with them; she would have been a child. Unfortunately, Peggy Sue had died a few months prior to the interview with Kathryn. Kathryn remembered thinking it was a little strange,

even for back then, but she loved it. She was not allowed to participate in visiting but enjoyed the Christmas Boogers who knocked on the door of her parent’s home. Kathryn ended the interview with a laugh, saying, “It was a wonderful reason to go visit people and have a good time, it was hard to just show up at someone’s home unless you were invited…unless you were a Christmas Booger!”

WRECKS 11-4: A vehicle driven by Ja’marra Talayha Rosalen Wall, 18, 220 Black Rock School Rd., Cherryville, told responding officer that she was attempting to stop on the wet road but her vehicle continued to slide due to the road conditions and poor tread on her front tires. As a result, she collided in the rear with a vehicle driven by Cearira Shanea Unique Cowan, 30, 316 Black Rock School Rd., Cherryville, which was stopped in the travel lane of West Church Street. No injuries reported. Est damages to both vehicles: $100/vehicle. 11-5: A vehicle driven by Lois Carr Ward, 77, 201 Nelson Dr., Lincolnton, was exiting from Small Town Kitchen Restaurant and pulled out in front of a vehicle driven by David Eugene Canipe, 54, 1716 Delview Rd., Cherryville, which was traveling west on West Church Street. No injuries reported. Est. damages to the Ward vehicle: $2,000; to the Canipe vehicle: $1,000. 11-7: A City of Cherryville vehicle (116 S. LAIL From Page 1 meals, it is thanks also to the wonderful staff of waitresses, cooks, and others, as well as their excellent customers that really makes Home Folks what it is today – a great smalltown diner with some of the best home-cooked food around. Sisters, Sandra and Janet, noted that Thomas will actually be riding in the parade as they will still be cooking up some great food while the parade is moving down Main Street that Saturday. “That’s usually our busiest time,” said Janet, who said of their being chosen as Grand Marshal, “We feel honored to have been

chosen.” Thomas agreed, adding he too was “…glad to chosen” to ride in the parade. Mrs. Tackett said the Chamber and the City are glad to be able to have a parade again as COVID19 restrictions basically shut everything Christmas down in 2020; no parade; no Who-Ville. As for the time in an earlier parade, Thomas pointed out a somewhat faded photo of their dad’s 1946 Chevrolet panel truck making its way down Main Street in the 2004 parade. In the photo, Mrs. Lail can be seen happily throwing out candy and treats to the little kids lining the street. Janet said her love of Cherryville’s Christmas Parades stems from the fact that she loves seeing the kids come out for them.

“Just seeing the joy on their faces! It’s worth it all and brings back a lot of great memories,” she said. Another facet of Cherryville’s downtown Christmas tradition many will remember is, as Thomas reminded everyone, his dressing up as Santa Claus and walking up and down Main Street handing out candy to the merchants and shoppers during the wonderful holiday season. Said Thomas, “I have been Santa since 1992. I love it! It’s a lot of fun watching people’s faces as you come up to them, hand out some candy and say, ‘Merry Christmas!’” For more information on the Cherryville Christmas Parade, check out the Chamber’s website, their Facebook page or call them at (704) 435-3451.

Cherryville City Memorial Cemetery announced as an official location for the 2021 National Wreaths Across America Day The cemetery will join the more than 2,700 participating locations across the country to Remember, Honor and Teach on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2021 at 2:00pm. The public is invited to attend. Columbia Falls, MAINE, and Cherryville, NC — November 18, 2021 — National nonprofit Wreaths Across America (WAA) and the Tryon Resolves Daughters of American Revolution (DAR) chapter in Cherryville announced today that Cherryville City Memorial Cemetery in Cherryville, NC will be joining in the effort to support the mission to Remember, Honor, Teach, as

an official location for 2021. This is the first year that the cemetery will participate in this national event. WAA started as a simple gesture of thanks that has grown into a national movement of dedicated volunteers and communities coming together to not only remember the nation’s fallen and honor their service, but to teach the

next generation about the sacrifices made for us to live freely. The goal set by our local DAR chapter is to raise enough funds to place at least 100 wreaths on the headstones of the local heroes laid to rest there, to ensure that the individuals who served to protect the freedoms of our country never be forgotten and to bring the community together in patriotic commemoration. Those interested in volunteering for WAA, or sponsoring a wreath are invited to visit https://wreathsacrossamerica.org/NC0448P to learn more. National Wreaths Across America

Day is a free, non-political, community event open to all people. You can sponsor a wreath for $15 (deadline is November 30, 2021 for this year’s ceremony but are accepted at any time for the following year) at https://www. wreathsacrossamerica.org/ NC0448P or by joining the “Wreaths Across America Tryon Resolves DAR” Facebook group. Each sponsorship goes toward a fresh balsam veteran’s wreath that will be placed on the headstone of an American hero as we endeavor to honor all veterans laid to rest at Cherryville City Memorial Cemetery this December.

I realize some of this difference is my scattered person-

ality but a lot of it is that construction is Jimbill’s career. They are professionals and I am a hobbyist amateur. I dip my toe in it here and there; they are immersed in it. Too often we Christians treat our religion as a hobby. Something we dabble with when convenient. We roll in when we want and roll out when we want. We dip our toes in. But that is not what we are called out from our communities to do. We are called to be a “Career Christian”. We are called to be immersed in God. We are to clock in and never sneak out early. Every time we leave the house, we should be recognized by the uniform for caring for others. All

our name badges should say, “Beloved Child of God”. From sun-up to sundown, Christ should be on our minds and lips. We are called to be professionals well-versed in our trade of sharing the good news of Jesus Christ. We should all have buckets of grace to forgive. We should have crates of understanding to comfort. We should have totes of praise for our Lord. Considering tomorrow is Thanksgiving we should have workboxes overflowing with gratitude towards God. Philippians 4:4-6 says, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be

Fly

(4th and Final Part of “Don’t be a Turkey” Series) Did you know that turkeys can fly? I didn’t until I saw a video of one flying into a tree. Most people don’t ever see them fly, because they tend to stay on the ground. It reminds me that some people have the ability to go higher in their relationship with the Lord, but don’t strive to go to the next level. Yet, God always wants us to grow and DANYALE PATTERSON increase from strength to strength and glory to glory. Colossians 1:10 (ESV) states, “...walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.” Heavy weight Although wild turkeys have the ability to fly, domestic turkeys have excess weight and less muscle preventing them from taking flight. Domesticated turkeys can weigh up to 40 pounds while wild turkeys are lighter allowing them to also run faster. What’s holding you down and keeping you from being, having, and doing all that God desires for you? Apostle Paul in Hebrews 12:1 (NLT) gives instructions on how to shape up so we can finish the race and soar. He states, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.” Look Up Life can cause us to be consumed with temporary things and put eternal things on the back burner. God doesn’t mind us taking care of and stewarding what he has given us; the problem becomes when our relationship with him and what he has called us to do are no longer a priority for us. In order for us to fly or soar spiritually our mindsets and focus have to change from an earthly mentality to a heavenly mentally. Colossians 3:1-4 (NIV) says,, “Since then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.” PRAY THIS PRAYER: “Father, I am sitting here thinking about your faithfulness and goodness. The list is extremely long of all the wonderful things you have done for me, in me, and through me. Then to top it off, you love me despite my mistakes and disobedience. Who is like you, the LORD our God, who is seated on high? But you O Lord are exalted forever. Forgive me for allowing my circumstances, insecurities or others to hinder me from going higher in my walk with you. I repent for not always doing what you have called me to do. Help me to accomplish my dreams and soar in my divine purpose. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.” Danyale Patterson is co-founder of Enlighten Ministries, a 501c3 organization with her husband Brandon Patterson. and the Cherryville Chamber of Commerce underwrite most of the expenses associated with these events, but additional funds are needed. Thus, sponsorships are made available each year to help cover the cost of these events. They hope that folks get in the holiday spirit and take advantage of the following sponsorship opportunities: Presenting sponsor for Christmas on Main Street is $5,000; the Who-Bilation Christmas Tree in downtown Main Street is $1,500; The Grinch’s Lair at the Gazebo is $300; Cindy Lou Who’s Play Area is $300; Who-lectric Hayrides is $300; Holiday Music at the Gazebo is $200; and General Who-Ville Sponsorships are $150. As for the sponsorships for the Cherryville Christmas Parade, Tackett noted the Shriners (Shriner Clubs participating) are $100 each; and the High School Band is $150. And, noted Tackett, don’t forget to have some Green Eggs and Ham at Home Folks Café, and grab a holiday treat at Chef Rebecca Goins’ Butter Me Up Café, then dance the night away to the tunes spun up by DJ Larry Wright at the Holiday Dance Party. Said Tackett, “The holiday season approaches, so let us know right away if you’re interested in a sponsorship. Signs will be displayed with sponsors’ names on them. CHS Ironmen start 2021-2022 hoops season scrimmaging with Red Raiders JV/Varsity teams scrimmaged on Tuesday; Lady Ironmen scrimmaged Thursday, Nov. 18 by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

While the points don’t really matter in a scrimmage, the visiting South Point Red Raiders had a good showing against the CHS varsity men last Tuesday, Nov. 16, downing the Ironmen 114-67. The two teams played six eight-minute quarters, with Coach Scott Harrill’s Ironmen going against a team they don’t normally play in their regular 1A/2A conference season. The junior varsity men also scrimmaged in the earlier games and were coached by Coach Antonio Griggs, who also is one of Coach Harrill’s varsity team

AC’s. The JV’s, who played only two short quarters, did a good job but were overmatched by a larger, speedier Red Raiders JV squad. Coach Griggs praised his young men for staying strong and making some good moves against an equally youthful South Point team. The varsity team is comprised of returners Jack Mulvey, Numarius Good, Carson Kelly, Gavin Cease, Landon Hahn, and Carter Spangler. They were joined by Ethan Honeyman, Nate Bookout, Darrien Floyd, Cooper Sloan, Collin Huss, Khanye Kennedy, and Chance Hunt. Kelly was the high scorer in the scrimmage with 21 points, followed by Good’s 10 points. Kennedy and Floyd had six points apiece. (Additional information by Susan L. Powell)

Gaston College’s first long road trip of the season proved successful Rhinos still unbeaten in their return to basketball after 50 years. by RICHARD WALKER Gaston College Sports Communications Gaston College travelled 122 miles to Erskine College in Due West, S.C., last Tuesday night and came away with a 64-52 victory over the Fleet’s varsity II team. The win gave the Rhinos a 6-0 record entering this weekend’s games at Tallahassee Community College on Friday night (Nov. 12) and at Northwest Florida State College on Saturday. In Tuesday’s win, Jaylen Bates had 12 points, Joshua Johnson and Da’marco Watson 11 points each, and Damon Davis and Naysean Baisy nine points apiece. It was the Rhinos’ second road game of the year, with the first road contest at Charlotte’s Johnson & Wales University in the school’s first basketball game since 1972 in its Nov. 5 season opener. Against Pitt County CC

Gaston College’s return to basketball continued its perfect start on Sunday afternoon with a 97-68 victory over Pitt County Community College at North Gaston High School. The Rhinos improved their record to 5-0 in their first season of basketball in 50 years. Trailing only once – at 2-1 – Gaston College used a balanced offensive attack and another suffocating defensive effort to roll to a 41-30 halftime lead before taking a 29-point victory. Damon Davis (21 points, 5 assists), Naysean Baisy (16 points), Jaylen Bates (13 points, 10 rebounds) and Dee Merriweather (12 points) led the offense and Kalil Camara had four blocked shots and Bates three as the Rhinos limited the Bulldogs (2-2) to 38.9 percent shooting and into 16 turnovers. “This is a good win for us,” Gaston College coach David Nutt said. “They’re a quality opponent. This is the first junior college opponent we have played this year so we didn’t really know what to expect. “Defensively, I thought we were pretty good. We welcomed Naysean Baisy back. And we got really

good efforts from a lot of players, especially Damon Davis and Jaylen Bates.”

After considering several options and receiving input from students and staff, the school selected red and purple as its colors and the phoenix as its mascot. “The phoenix is a bird-like creature from Greek mythology that is said to have the ability to regenerate and rise from the ashes of its predecessor,” explained Bowman. “As the phoenix represents a new birth, we are experiencing a new beginning for our school to rise up and become a model high school in the region and in the state.” Bowman added, “As we

were going through the design process for the mascot logo, someone said our phoenix graphic, with the bird’s outstretched wings, brings to mind the caduceus, which is the symbol associated with healthcare and medical practice. So, I think we have chosen an appropriate mascot for our new school.” In addition to Bowman, the program featured remarks from Dr. Jeff Booker, superintendent of Gaston County Schools, and Dr. John Hauser, president of Gaston College. trators; Dr. Bill Thierfelder, president of Belmont Abbey College; Chris Peek, president and CEO of CaroMont Health; Angie Saunders of the Gaston Business Association; and Josh Allen, principal of the Gaston Early College High School. “All of the preparation, all of the time and energy, and all of the work that has gone into this new school is about making sure that we have the workforce available for the expanding healthcare industry in Gaston County,” said Booker. “All you have to do is drive by the site on Interstate 85 in Belmont to see the new hospital being built by CaroMont Health. Knowing that there will be a second hospital in our community is a sign of growth. It also is an indication that we will need people to work there.” Booker added, “This school is a game-changer for our community. The goal is to have our students working in the new hospital, and through the Gaston Early College of Medical Sciences, our students will receive the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to be the next generation of healthcare professionals for this community.” Three students, Andre Gaddy, Sadie Morton, and Chandandeep Chahil, led the Pledge of Allegiance. The “perspectives” portion of the program featured remarks from student Emma Burger, parent Dr. John Burger, and teacher Lisa Neisler. The students were involved with the

unveiling of the school mascot, and all program participants were part of the ribbon cutting. Students are chosen to attend the school through an application/lottery process that is conducted each spring. Last year, students entering the ninth and tenth grades were able to apply. As the school grows, it will have students in grades 9-12. The ceremony was recorded, and it aired the week of Oct. 11-17, on Spectrum Cable Channel 21 (the Education Station for Gaston County Schools and Gaston College) at 9:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 5 p.m., and 8 p.m. The video is also available on the Gaston County Schools website and YouTube channel. Special thanks go to Gaston County Schools Communications Department, Business Partnerships Office, Facilities/Maintenance Department; Gaston College’s Marketing and Communications Educational Partnerships, Campus Police and Safety; Cherryville’s Upchurch Garden Center; Ingles Market of Dallas; Creative Solutions; and Stanley Middle School. (About the Gaston Early College of Medical Sciences – The Gaston Early College of Medical Sciences (GECMS) opened in August 2021 on the Gaston College campus in Dallas. It is an innovative, healthcare-focused high school that is designed especially for students interested in the medical field.)

We were thrilled to see some turkeys returned, and their disguises were fantastic! We have one turkey “hiding” out

For the last month or two the Library’s “holds” are now kept up front by their public service desk. (photos provided) as a dish of candy and another one masquerading as a pile of fall leaves (at least, we think it’s leaves). The cutest by far is the bucket of popcorn! We extended our date and encouraged anyone who “rescued” a turkey to bring them back in. We hope to do this again

next year, and hopefully we’ll see a whole flock of holiday birds. You may have noticed in the last month or two that our holds are now kept up front by our public service desk. And you may have noticed that the hold slips look quite

a bit different. We are moving to a self-help system, one where you are able to walk in and pull your own holds off the cart. We are also getting ready to roll out a new mobile app that will allow you to check out those same holds yourself – great if you’re in

West/Midwest All-Star Basketball Gamesschedule for March ‘22 by MIKE POWELL Special to the Eagle The top players from Cherryville, Bessemer City and Highland Tech, along with those from 13 other schools, will compete in the West/ Midwest All-Star Basketball Games March 19, 2022, at Cherokee High School. Members of the event’s executive committee met Oct. 13 to finalize plans for the annual event, which is now in its eighth year, and is directed by longtime Cherryville assistant basketball coach Dr. Bud Black. Both girls’ and boys’ games are scheduled, and the event will occur after the North Carolina High School Athletics Association championship games have been completed. The Midwest schools from which top players will be drawn are Avery, Bessemer

City, Cherryville, Draughn, Highland Tech, Mitchell, Rosman, Mountain Heritage and Thomas Jefferson. The West teams will feature players named to All-Conference teams and voted on by coaches. In the Midwest, one player will be named from each participating school. Teams in the West division are Cherokee, Highlands, Hayesville, Murphy, Hiwassee Dam, Nantahala, Andrews, Blue Ridge, Swain and Robbinsville. Among the officials attending the Oct. 13 virtual meeting were Black, Gaston County Board of Education member Lee Dedmon, treasurer and Cherryville athletics director Scott Harrill and media representative Mike Powell.
