South Point state champs defeat Rocky Mount 16-7 By John Wilson john.bannernews@gmail.com
It would all come down to one game. Last Saturday the South Point Red Raiders were at Wake Forest University to take care of some unfinished business. South Point was about to take the field to take on the Rocky Mount Gryphons for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) 3A football championship. As the Red Raiders lined up for the opening kickoff at BB&T Field they were determined to win. But winning would not be easy. Rocky Mount was the defending state champs. A reality not lost on the Red Raiders. Last year, Rocky Mount beat South Point in a heartbreaking 24-21 overtime tear jerker. Just before kickoff the thought had to run through the players' minds, Wow, we are in the championship game! Even among the Raider Nation faithful some just had to wonder, How the heck did we get here? South Point's path to greatness is a story that many in the Belmont area will talk about for years. But like every good story things were bad before they got better. Only a few short months ago almost no one thought South Point would be playing for all the marbles. Going into this year South Point was looking at a host of shortcomings. The 2016 squad was inexperienced and green. They lacked depth and were looking for an identity. Add to that the fact that South Point lost a host of starters to graduation. By all accounts 2016 would be a hard year for the Red Raiders. South Point High won the NCHSAA state 3A football championship by beating Rocky Mount 16-7 last Saturday in Wake Forest. See SOUTH POINT page 10 The team is seen celebrating their glorious victory. If famed artist Norman Rockwell were still living he would probably love to paint a picture of Mt. Holly’s Dr. Lee Beatty attending one of his patients in his affable and caring manner and in the background would be an image of the award Beatty recently received naming him NC Family Physician of the Year 2016. The award came from the 3,800 member NC Academy of Family Physicians, the state’s largest specialty medical association. “I was shocked, honored, and completely surprised,” Beatty said. But he shouldn't have been. Beatty’s credentials are wide and deep. He graduated from Duke University magna cum laude with a B.S. in Zoology. He graduated from Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He served his internship and residency in Family Medicine at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. In 1981 he co-founded South Point Family Practice in Belmont with Dr. David Locklear where he practiced for ten years. In 1991 he embarked on a six year stint teaching residents and medical students at Carolinas Medical Center. In 1996 He was awarded the David Citron Lectureship for distinguished scholarship and teaching by the UNC-Chapel Hill Family Medicine faculty. In addition, Mt. Holly's Dr. Lee Beatty was recently named NC Family PhysiBeatty has authored four medical textbook chapters and co- cian of the Year. After months of work the new Tug Deason Gym in Stanley at Harper Park on Blacksnake Rd. will be offcially dedicated Thursday, Dec. 29 at 4pm. The public is invited to attend. Ground was broken for the 8,000 sq. ft. structure last January. The gym that's being replaced is over 60 years old. It's called the Kiser Center and is located on East Church St. That structure was a “New Deal” project from WWII days. See GYM page 4
