Stanley swears in first female police officer By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com

The Town of Stanley swore in its first female police officer during a ceremony last week. Taylor Culp took the oath of office from town clerk Alisha Sheets as interim police chief Derek Summey and Culp's family looked on. An interesting twist to the story is the fact that Culp's father, Doug Myers, is also an officer on the Stanley PD with 14 years under his belt. He pinned Culp's badge on her. “I am really excited to be in the position to work with my daughter,” Myers said. Culp's primary responsibility will be that of School Resource Officer at Springfield and Kiser elementary schools. When school is closed, she will take a beat like other officers. Myers also has SRO experience and that inspired Taylor. “I heard how much he loved working with those kids,” Culp said. A native of Kings Mtn., Culp previously served on the police force there as an SRO in the middle and elementary schools and is still listed as a reserve officer. She still calls KM home and communtes to Stanley. Culp took a break from police work to run her own business, but when she heard about the Stanley position, jnumped at the chance to get back into law enforcement. “The good Lord opened a door,” Culp said. Culp feels that overcoming challenges she faced in her own youth will help her in the role of SRO. “A lot of children don't have a positive role model,” she said. “A lot of them only hear bad things about the police. I want to break that cycle. I want to give back to the kids.” Culp is full of energy and enthusiasm with a sunny smile.

In late August of every year hundreds of schools across the State of North Carolina kick off their football seasons. They all have a goal. Win a state championship. Some will win a lot of games, some only a few. Some will make it into the playoffs. But in the end only two teams from each class will travel to Chapel Hill to get a shot at being called State Champs. The South Point Red Raiders are one of those teams. Last week South Point head coach Mickey Lineberger said, "We played well enough to earn four more quarters." Against Kings Mountain the Red Raiders played well enough and then some. After a dominating 29-7 win over Kings Mountain the Red Raiders earned a trip to Keenan
