Doris Hicks, 82, of N. Belmont is not only a cancer survivor, she's a quilter and canner extraordinaire who loves to share her covering and culinary creations with others. Hicks learned the crafts of quilting and canning as a young girl growing up on the family farm in the Cleveland County community of Mooresboro. “I would sit and watch my mother make quilts from little squares of cloth,” Hicks said. “The quilts weren't decorations, they were practical and kept us warm.” Her mother also taught Hicks how to can food. “We always had a garden and put fruit and vegetables in Doris Hicks of N. Belmont is seen with one of the many quilts she makes by hand. This one is jars,” she said. similar to those she watched her mother make growing up on the family farm near Mooresboro. Some pretty impressive acts were seen on the Ed Sullivan television show during its day including the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Jefferson Airplaneand the Cramerton Square Dance Team. This coming weekend, in addition to a lot of other wonderful items, memorabilia from the team's performance will be on display during the Cramerton Centennial event. It was August 14th, 1955 when the square dance group hit the national spotlight on Sullivan’s CBS-TV “Toast of the Town” entertainment variety show, but team members Doris and Mack Stowe who currently live in Belmont and were in their 20s back then, remember the sensations quite well. see more CRAMERTON page 3

According to Belmont Federal Savings and Loan Association president Mike Anthony, that financial institution is the oldest of its type in the county still in its original form, and now has a century of service to customers under its belt. “The company started in an office at Chronicle Mill on February 19, 1915,” said Anthony. “The idea was to help people buy homes.” The firm was first known as Belmont Building and Loan Association. Its charter declared “the object for which said corporation is formed is to enable subscribers hereto to assist each other, and all who may become associated with them in making loans to its members only, and to enable them to acquire real estate, making improvements thereon and removing encumbrances therefrom by the payments of periodical installments”. The guys who got the firm up and running were Belmont's movers and shakers of the period. R.B. Suggs was the first president. Other charter officers included first vice president R.F.
