Hurricane Irma gives our area a bloody nose but it could have been worse

Last week's visit to our area by the remnants of Hurricane Irma left plenty of tree limbs and leaves on the ground, over 1,000 Duke Energy customers without power, lots of rain and wind in the sky, but thankfully no widespread destruction like the storm left elsewhere.

Monday night and Tuesday morning saw local winds at a steady 20-25mph with overnight gusts to 40mph. Sheets of rain fell throughout the period. Tuesday morning saw parts of Belmont without power, phone, or internet service. Besides Belmont, power outage areas also included Mt. Holly, Ranlo, and Stanley.

In Belmont two large trees fell. On Todd St. a tree split in half and blocked the roadway as well as pulling down power lines.

On Central Avenue, a massive oak on the grounds of Stowe Manor also knocked down several other large trees on its way to the ground. The root ball was over six feet in diameter.

“We had one fall in 2011 but this one was bigger,” said Sam Stowe who estimated the behemoth weighted close to 30,000 pounds.

Belmont fire department division captain Craig Austin reported that his men responded to six storm-related calls overnight.

In Mt. Holly, deputy chief Craig Spry gave this report.

“We responded to two incidents that were directly related to the storm, a tree on a house (no injuries) and a tree that had fallen which also knocked down some power lines. Overall it was a relatively calm night in comparison to what we had planned and prepared for.”

Doug Brewer cutting hair since WWII and still going strong

The fictional town of Mayberry had a famous barber named Floyd and Belmont has an equally impressive hair cutter named Doug Brewer who has been plying his trade for over seven decades now.

Brewer, who turned 90 on August 26, grew up on the Aberfoyle Mill village in East Belmont. Both his parents worked in the mill and so did Doug, but his interest turned to barbering when he started work as a shoeshine boy at Bill Ballard's Barbershop.

“I would hang out at the barbershop,” Brewer said. “There was a couple of little boys who used to play on the railroad tracks and then they would come in when Bill was at lunch and I would 90-year-old Doug Brewer is still cutting hair after over seven practice cutting their hair.”

In 1944, Brewer forged a birth certificate and joined the U.S. decades on the job. Brewer’s seen with Mann Tram at his shop in the Belmont General Store.

Belmont Sports Hall of Fame Spotlight

By Stan Cromlish This week's Belmont Sports Hall of Fame inductee spotlight shines on Stephen Cowie who will be inducted into the Belmont Sports Hall of Fame on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 along with Devon Lowery, Rick Cherry, and the 2011 NCHSAA State Champion South Point High School Baseball team. Stephen is a 1996 graduate of South Point High School and a standout baseball player. Like most boys in Belmont, he started playing baseball in the Belmont Little League organization for the Belmont Optimist Club. As a twelve-year-old and still in Little League, Stephen pitched his first perfect game against the team sponsored by Beltex Company, Inc. With his pitching record and athletic prowess; there was the expectation that he would accomplish a lot athletically during his junior high and high school years in Belmont and he did not disappoint.

My Opinion: Hurricanes are horrible Elsewhere in this publication you will read of our local brush last week with Hurricane Irma, and the visit 28 years ago this very week of Hurricane Hugo, so this week's column from yours truly are my personal recollections of what took place Sept. 22, 1989.

To start out with I did not take Hugo very seriously. All day the weathermen had been hollering about the storm coming our way but I ignored them. On the other hand, Sharon was as I recall very worried. As night approached it started to rain and the wind to blow. We went to bed and tried to sleep. No go as the hours ticked by the wind got stronger and the rain commenced to lashing the house. I put on a brave face but it was about to get punched.

In the wee hours of the Hugo morning the trees commenced to swishing and swooshing like a bunch of hula girls on speed. We could hear trees cracking like rifle shots as they broke from the wind. We live in a log house in a clearing in the woods and the wind was blowing so hard the logs started creaking like the timbers in a wooden sailing ship. I was by now pretty skeered. Sharon got up and went downstairs. I soon followed and we dragged the 100 year old, 150 pound farm table that Grandma Smith's brothers had made into the center of the living room and got under it.

At that time Sharon's poodle GiGi (aka GooGoo or CooCoo) was still among the living and tried to get under the table too but I told her to “git”.

All night the wind howled and the logs groaned. I finally dozed off and about daylight awoke to a bad smell. It was like a combo of sardines and rotten eggs. I opened mine eyes and saw the culprit- it was GooGoo! That rascal had crept under the table and was sleeping and snoring blissfully with its snout about two inches from my nose!

Well, with that rude awakening I got up and went to the door and opened it. I will never forget the scene. Our house was bracketed by Alan Hodge fallen pine trees but by a Banner-News Editor miracle not one was on the dwelling place. The next smell to hit my nostrils was the pungent one of pine sap from the many trees of that species that had broken off. I sat on the porch and boohooed.

Later that day we drove to the ice house in Ranlo hoping to get a bag. The place was swarming with like-minded folks. There was a guy on the loading dock throwing half melted bags of cubes to the clamoring mob. A large, deep, puddle of greasy water was at the base of the dock and this caused most folks to stand back a bit. I saw a little kid run to the front of the crowd and try to catch a bag but it knocked him down in the puddle and he stood up drenched and crying.

For food we cooked everything in the freezer before it went bad that could be fired up on a little hibachi. Those rations consumed we drove around a few days later and found a fish camp in Mt. Holly that was open.

No power at the house meant no well pump and no water so I took a bucket and dipped from our creek to work the commodes. One bucketful had a crawdad in it but I let him escape.

Well, that's about all I remember from Hugo.

Believe me, the Irma stuff last week brought back a flood of memories. We were so lucky that Irma didn't hurt us like it did the poor souls in places like Cuba and Florida. Let's all be thinking about them and if there's anyway you can help with time or treasure then now's the time to pitch in.

I returned to running the streets. It wasn’t pretty.

When I was in high school, I ran cross country. Imagine this non-athlete running 10 miles every day in practice. I stopped running when I graduated. When I came to Charlotte 21 years ago, I went running each evening. When the family joined me three months later, the running stopped. Shortly after that, I joined the Dowd Y. I didn’t work out hard; I strolled along on the treadmill.

Group classes were for others.

Nautilus machines were there to keep the carpet in place.

Yes, I worked out or should I say, I showed up at the Y. A few years ago, I attended one F3 workout. I stayed 20 minutes and decided to leave.

I headed back to the Dowd Y where it was safe and life was predictable.

A short time ago I found an F3 group for people that are older. That sounded good to me. I arrived at the park but no one showed up. After waiting 10 minutes, I decided to run.

While running, I discovered a small track. It wasn’t the quarter mile track I ran on in high school. It was smaller; much smaller. I ran a third around the track and had to stop.

The next day I returned and ran three quarters around the track. On the third day, I ran

completely around the track. I felt like Rocky Balboa running up the steps in Rocky I. I was ecstatic.

I learned something that day while I was running. I thought I was in shape. I wasn’t. It changed how I exercise.

As I did with exercise, we can do the same with life. We can reach a point of equilibrium and maintain it. We become satisfied with where we are and are satisfied. What if there is more?

Can we do the same thing with our walk with God. We go to church, participate in a Bible study and serve a meal at the Rescue Mission. What if God wants us to go deeper.

What if He want us to pursue him the same way those men were pursuing being in shape when I walked out of the F3 workout.

There is a scripture verse that says, “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.”

God has a calling on your life that goes beyond having a

Tony Marciano good job, paying the mortgage and getting your kids into a good college. What will you be remembered for when you are gone? How will you make this world a better place? How will you make His love real to those who feel they are beyond His grace, mercy and forgiveness?

Is God calling you to push out into the deep waters, to do something you have never done? Is he asking you to go deeper with Him that you can be a light to this world? Is he pushing you out of your comfort zone?

I’m still not ready for the F3 workout. However, I am in a class at the Dowd Y at 6am on Monday. Come join me. I’m the guy who is still out of shape but not willing to let that hold him back.

Harvey, Irma and 911, We Can Replace the Stuff Hurricane Harvey and Irma have been bad news to all in their paths. Lives have sadly been lost, houses demolished and personal items blown or washed away. Such horrific acts of nature remind us that we are all fragile and vulnerable. The right wind and rain can wash everything away including us and people we love so much.

We love our stuff. We store it. We hoard it.

We want to pass it on to our children and grandchildren. There are storage facilities being built almost everywhere in America because we love our stuff so much. Harvey and Irma remind us again that our greatest assets are our lives and the people we love. If we have our health, safety and valued people in our lives then everything is either secondary or worthless in perspective to life and people.

None of us want to see our houses floating down a river or covered up in trees to never be lived in again. We don't want to lose our pictures and everything we have worked so hard to buy and cherish. Such loss is excruciating. However, it is stuff and stuff is never forever.

I recognize there is much about this planet that seems to last forever. There is a huge rock formation above my old home place that we always called Buzzard Rock. It was a fun place to climb and play as a kid. I can't see or tell where that rock has changed one bit over the last sixty years.

It looks the same to me. I suspect a hundred years from now it will look much the same and another generation of people will have walked or played

on that rock and passed on while Buzzard Rock remains for many others to come by for fun and play.

Glenn Mollette September 11 is once again here. Those of us who lived on that day will never forget the crumbling of the twin towers. A new incredible building called the One World Trade Center has been built and is phenomenal.

The tragedy of that day was so many innocent lives were snuffed out by such evil people. Those hardworking good American people are no longer with us and nothing can replace them. We remember them and their value to us all.

People are suffering in America today, from the people of Texas to all over Florida, Georgia and to all who remember September 11, 2001.

However, it doesn't have to be a hurricane or act or terrorism to shake our very lives. Often it's the everyday occurrences of life that sometimes go unnoticed by the masses of people round us.

Often, it's the death of an aging parent or the sudden loss of a young adult that shakes our lives. A person overdosing and dying from drugs breaks our hearts. Or there is the man or woman we read or hear about who can no longer cope with the difficulties of life.

Take time today on this day to value who and what really counts. Cherish those around you and help those you can. We can replace the stuff. It's the people that we can't.

Remember the greatness that is us This afternoon our family watched the Megan Leavey movie. However, I may have to watch it again since I found myself crying almost from the first scene. I honestly could not understand why the tears flowed – in fact, they are flowing again as I write these words. Was it redblooded American patriotism that overwhelmed my emotions?

Was it the gripping story of the real-life hero and her equally heroic dog as they teamed up to discover bombs and save lives on the front lines of Iraq?

Was I crying for my unofficial nephew, Ward Linder, who gave his last breath as an Army Specialist in Iraq almost ten years to the day we watched this movie that took viewers behind the lines of that often gory battlefield?

Maybe I cried because the film reminded me of our family dog Pippy that we love dearly. Were the tears for my late father whose love for his country was exceeded only by his love for his family? I could not determine why I cried.

Nevertheless the tears flowed throughout the entire film.

But now the reason for my tears is becoming clear. I cried for our country. The movie stirred something within me that broke my heart. The bodies of thousands upon thousands of men, women, and yes, even service dogs have returned to America in flag-draped coffins. Others returned with injury-laden bodies and minds. So much has been given by so many - but for what?

Did generations of heroes sacrifice so we can could scream at each other across our social media platforms? Is Arlington Cemetery filled with the remains of champions who would

Navy. He was only 16 years old. He served on several vessels including the battleship Texas, aircraft carrier Champlain, and for a brief time on a sub.

“On the sub I slept in a bunk with a torpedo above and one below me,” Brewer recalled.

While he was in the Navy, Brewer honed his haircut skills.

“I wasn't classified as a barber, but could do a pretty good job job at it,” he said.

When he returned to Belmont after the war, Brewer looked up Ballard.

“Bill said if I went to barber school he would give me a job,” Brewer said. “I went to work for him in 1946."

After a spell at Ballard' establishment, Brewer opened his own place next to the Park and Shop grocery store on Wilkinson Blvd. He stayed there until the late 1960s when he came back to Belmont and opened a shop on East Catawba. About six years ago he moved his base of operations to a spot in the rear of Belmont General Store.

Over the course of his career, Brewer has seen many heads- including some famous ones.

“I've cut the hair of many dignitaries,” Brewer said.

HURRICANE IRMA The storm meant that Gaston County Schools operated on a two-hour delay Tuesday morning.

Irma's impact contrasted strongly with what took place in our region back on September 22, 1989 when Hurricane Hugo came calling.

Hugo's smash was the worst natural disaster to hit us since the Great Flood of 1916.

The first images of Hugo's wrath that folks saw on the front page of the Belmont Banner showed downed power lines, the screen of the Belmont Drive In Theater lying in a twisted heap, homes with shingles torn away, the

water tower at Parkdale Mills with its top missing, and the ticket booth at South Point High sans its roof.

Hugo caused students at Belmont Abbey to be sent home. The roof of the Haid was torn off. The cross at the top of the Abbey bell tower was blown askew.

Belmont’s city manager at the time, Ken York, talked about the mess Hugo left.

“Due to the large mass of tree debris on the sides of the streets, it will take a massive effort to achieve total cleanup.”

“I was coming down Main Street at Mockingbird Lane when the rear end of the car was struck,” Swanson said at the time. “It just pushed the car on across the street.”

Swanson and others worked to clear limbs and debris from the roads in McAdenville, where the damage estimate from Hugo was $1.7 million. That included 300 homes with minor to heavy damage, the roof of the town hall being blown off, and the police department being flooded. An estimated

2,000 trees were down in McAdenville.

In Mount Holly, Mayor Charles Black spoke after Hugo had departed.

“We can survive,” he said.

“We’ve had people offering to help in any way they can.”

To house those whose homes were damaged by Hugo, the Mount Holly Jr. High gym was opened as an emergency shelter. Members of the Catawba Heights VFD went to work helping clear streets and yards of limbs and trees. Mount Holly police Sgt. Bob Johnson reported there were no injuries due to the storm. However, cars were damaged.

“We did have some trees striking moving vehicles,” he

In Stanley, the town’s civil defense siren tower was broken and trees were devastated.

“It’s something I have never seen before and don’t want to see again,” said Police Chief Donnie Davis.

Stanley police worked 16-18 hour shifts after the storm. Stanley Mayor Ned Cannon praised the town’s citizens.

“I’m proud of the people of Stanley,” he said. “We came through the storm well.”

Also in the aftermath of Hugo, the Red Cross set up mobile kitchens in the Belmont/ Mount Holly area that served Hugo victims sandwiches, soup, and drinks.

The kitchens were located at places such as Mount Holly Jr. High, Belmont First Presbyterian, and Stanley Rescue Squad. A photo in the Mount Holly News showed Red Cross volunteers from Michigan handing out vittles to

folks.

To get the electricity flowing again to the thousands of area homes that were without it, crews from Alabama Power and Light came up to help Duke Power workers. In appreciation, Allen Foreman in North Belmont hung an old quilt with the words “Thank You Alabama Power and Light” painted on it from his front porch.

People pulled together to help one another after Hugo.

One person that the Banner profiled in this regard was Ann Auten of Catawba Heights who was helping her disabled neighbor, Shirley Robinson, cope with being without electricity by cooking meals for her on a camp stove.

Another story talked about how Stanley postmaster Frank Guida and his colleagues at the post office were loaned a generator so they would have lights to sort the mail.

From page 1 As a seventh-grader at Belmont Junior High School in 1990, he played basketball, soccer, and ran track. Baseball was not on his radar during his seventh-grade year, but he finished second in the 1600-meter event during the Gaston County Track Meet. During that season, Stephen completed every 1600meter event under five minutes except one which earned MVP honors for Belmont Junior High's 1990 track team. In 1991, as an eighth-grader, he played baseball, basketball, and soccer while still running track.

He remained undefeated during the county track season in both the 1600 meter and 800-meter events. At the national junior AAU meet in the summer of 1991, Stephen finished second in the 1500-meter event with a time of four minutes and eighteen seconds. He was able to compete in that event because of his second-place finish at the North Carolina State Championship track meet earlier that year. As a ninth-grader in 1992, the young man participated and excelled in baseball, basketball, soccer, track, and cross-country and set a Gaston County junior high school record in the 1600-meter event with a time of four minutes and 36 seconds. His junior high years were just a prelude to what he would accomplish athletically at South Point High School.

As a sophomore in 1993, Stephen pitched for the North Carolina State 15 and Under AAU baseball team during the national tournament held in Charlotte. He ran track and cross-country while playing on the junior varsity basketball and baseball teams. In 1995, Stephen's high school baseball pitching career took off. For the high school baseball season, he pitched one no-hitter and compiled a record of thirteen wins and four losses. His stat line for the 1994 season included 198 strikeouts, 29 walks, and a 0.75

earned-run-average over 121 innings pitched. The team finished that season as the runner-up for the North Carolina State High School Baseball Championship.

His 198 strikeouts rank ninth alltime for high school pitchers in North Carolina. At the end of his junior season, Stephen signed a full scholarship offer from Duke University after evaluating offers from Clemson University, North Carolina State University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In February of his senior year, Baseball America Magazine ranked him in its top 100 high school prospects at number 54. In April, Baseball America ranked him the top high school prospect in the State of North Carolina. His high school career crashed during his senior year when he injured his elbow and had to undergo reconstructive surgery even before the season started.

As a freshman at Duke in 1996, he spent the year recovering from the surgery and recorded a record of two wins and two losses. His sophomore season at Duke was a lot better; he led the team with a record of six wins and two losses and gave up an average of 2.8 runs per game.

As a junior in 1998, Stephen compiled eleven wins against two losses with an earned-runaverage of 2.85. In 126 innings pitched, he compiled 111 strikeouts while allowing only 23 batters to reach first on walks.

While earning first-team AllACC honors as a junior, Stephen recorded five complete games including a shutout win against Georgia Tech during the ACC Baseball Tournament. At the end of his junior year and ranked among the best in the ACC, he led Duke pitchers in games started, wins, complete games, innings pitched, strikeouts, and earned-run-average and won the Duke baseball team MVP and outstanding pitcher award for that season. His senior season

The Banner News / banner-news.com began with him being named the captain of the Duke baseball team, and he racked up an ACC leading strikeout count of 137 and again led the Duke pitchers with eight wins in eighteen starts, 116-innings pitched, and three complete. Receiving ACC Pitcher of the Week honors on April 13 and April 18 helped him earn second-team All-ACC honors that year. During the Major League draft, the Cleveland Indians made him their selection in the ninth-round.

His two years in the Major League farm programs of the Cleveland Indians and the Colorado Rockies saw him earn the number one ranking in strikeouts per nine innings in the New York-Penn League for 1999 while a member of the Mahoning Valley Scrappers during the advanced-A short season. In 2000, as a member of the ClassA Columbus Red Stixx team, Stephen pitched in the South Atlantic League All-Star game after starting the season with seven wins against only one loss. In 2001, he decided to call it a career and enrolled at North Carolina State University as a graduate student. To scratch his competitive itch, he began competing in long-distance running.

In 2003, he finished 2nd in the Empire 5k Classic in Raleigh with a time of 15 minutes and 41 seconds. In 2004 and 2006, he finished fourth and third before capturing back to back wins in the Grandfather Mountain Marathon in 2009 and 2010 in Boone.

In 2007, he finished 33rd out of 15,958 runners in the San Diego Marathon with a time of two hours and thirty-four minutes.

He finished eighth at the National Marathon in Washington, DC and the Raleigh Marathon in 2008. He achieved his personal best time at the Portland Marathon in 2009 where he clocked 26.2 miles in two hours and thirty-three minutes. Stephen currently resides in Greensboro and is employed as a software engineer.

Meditations Listen and be thankful You never know where life lessons will come. Buried within a fiction novel was a nugget that inspired me. Jean Neal, a beloved member of the Three Pines community in Montreal, passed away.

She left to mourn her friends and dog, Lucy. Each morning Jean would cut a banana and give some to Lucy. Jean’s neighbor adopted Lucy. She tried to continue the tradition of cutting a banana for her, but Lucy refused to eat. The author, Louise Penny, writes, “Lucy knew the miracle wasn’t the banana, it was the hand that offered the banana.” What a wonderful life lesson.

We often pray, “God, bless me with a promotion. God, I need a… God, I want…” There is nothing wrong with asking. Scriptures encourage us to ask. But, do we focus more on the things or miracles we receive than on God? While the Israelites were wandering in the wilderness, they became hungry. God gave instructions to Moses. “Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day.” Exodus 16:4a NASB. The people were to collect no more or no less. They were to eat it all in that day.

Some were not obedient. They left part until morning, and it bred worms and was foul.

The manna was more than God answering prayer by providing for their hunger. There is a deeper nugget we are to learn beyond receiving the miracles. “I have heard the grumblings of the

sons of Israel; speak to them, saying, ‘At twilight, you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread; and you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’” Exodus 16:12 NASB. But, like the Israel- of Catawba Valley ites, we too fall prey to judging God by Methodist Churches our stomachs. If we receive, then we rejoice. Sometimes, when we do not receive, we become disgruntled and complain like the Israelites.

The next time you sit before God in silence, release your need to control. When you are in prayer, instead of asking, listen and be thankful. God knows our every need. God desires to build a relationship of trust within us. He wants to conform us into the image of Christ that we may know the essence of true and lasting joy. This everlasting joy is not in the new job, house or promotion. Everlasting joy comes only from the presence of God. “You will make known to me the path of life; in your presence is fullness of joy; in your right hand there are pleasures forever.” Psalm 16:11 NASB.

Jesus I Need You In this life we often face times when we need help. There are things we simply cannot do alone.

In this day and age, people experience many trials and hurts. People need help, people need Jesus.

John 5:1-9 tells of a time where Jesus was in Jerusalem for one of the yearly festivals. As Jesus and His disciples neared the Temple, they entered at the Sheep Gate. Near this entrance gate there was a pool located called the pool of Bethesda.

According to John, this pool had a porch all the way around, and one through the middle. This pool would have been used perhaps to wash animals before they were taken into the Temple for sacrifice. This pool also was believed to heal. The Bible says it was believed an angel would stir the water, and whomever entered in first after this stirring, would be healed. Because of this belief, hundreds of people who were sick or impaired would sit around this pool, hoping to be the first one in and be healed.

Jesus, as He neared this pool, saw a man laying nearby. He had been sick for thirty-eight years. Jesus asked this man, “Do you want to be made well?” (John 5:6, NKJV). The man responded that he could not get to the water in time before someone beat him in the pool. Jesus told him to rise and walk. The man for the first time, stood on his feet, and walked! This man, like most people, needed help. He could never be healed waiting by that pool, he needed Jesus.

Jesus stood by this man and asked him if he

wanted to be healed. Often we need help, yet we do not want to ask for it. However, there are things beyond our control, God-sized matters. In such times we need to ask Jesus for help.

Jesus has the answers we need.

“A God Pleasing Fabric” In 2014 I nearly didn’t pass my DMV eye exam. My eyes were getting noticeably worse; especially at night on back roads. Cataracts were producing blinding “voids and starbursts.” Then what certified my need was when I struggled tying fly fishing lures. I finally underwent needed surgery and rejoice daily over how much clearer everything is now.

This morning, reflecting on “clarity” and that surgery started me thinking about artwork around my home. I lean toward art that looks recognizable; photos of nature, “The Painter of Light” paintings, fictional nature paintings; plants, trees, quaint architecture, and people interacting with the same. I guess that is why I love real life gardening so much; but what about abstract art?

My sister sent me the Wings of Unity lithograph by Victoria Kwasinski. Initially I enjoyed the pastel colors and angels floating midair but until this morning my depth of understanding didn’t really start to connect. The pastel colors were reminiscent of the splendor of colors in nature. Flowers, birds, light, and textures are astounding; Victoria’s lithograph highlights that splendor too but her art also intimates our “soulish” need for that splendor.

Some say abstract art often has no meaning but simply is an expression of the artist’s personality at the moment; a way of connecting their art to their soul in a way that hopefully helps viewers to travel on a desirable journey in their own imagination; to connect with this piece of art in a personal way. But might someone’s soul lead them or us astray?

Some notable PhDs believe nothing is amiss with the human soul (mind, will and emotions). If we think about that, however, we simply know that isn’t so. Turn on the news!

Even older westerns were filled with villains slinking around stealing, lying, or killing. In Jeremiah 17:9 scripture teaches us that “The heart is deceptive above all things…” and most media programs, movies and news prove it every night.

How is it that our world has become so desirous of the dark side of human nature? Even art can influence us with darkness.

Isn’t it enough to know that evil exists; maybe even is prolific, without steeping ourselves in it relentlessly? Shouldn’t we try for loftier lives, uses of time and entertainment choices?

Gaston’s graduation rate increases again; now at 88.3% Once again, the high school graduation rate for Gaston County Schools has increased, according to information released by the North Carolina State Board of Education.

The graduation rate for the Class of 2017 is 88.3 percent, which is the highest rate ever for the school district.

Gaston’s graduation rate has increased each year for the past eight years. The Gaston rate of 88.3 percent is higher than the state graduation rate of 86.5 percent.

Eight high schools have a graduation rate that exceeds 90 percent. Three years ago, only four high schools were higher than 90 percent.

Called the four-year cohort graduation rate, it reflects the percentage of students who entered the ninth grade in 2013-2014 and graduated four years later in June 2017. The 2017 rate is higher than last year’s mark of 88.0 percent, and since the state first calculated the graduation rate in 2005-2006, Gaston County Schools has increased 20.2 points from 68.1 to 88.3 percent.

“We are extremely pleased to see our graduation rate increase again – this is a significant accomplishment for Gaston County Schools,” said Superintendent of Schools W. Jeffrey Booker. “Our steady increase over the years is a result of teachers, administrators, parents, counselors, nurses, social workers, and other student support personnel working together to ensure that students graduate from

high school.”

“A high school diploma is so important because it unlocks the door to the future for our students. That is why our ultimate goal is to have a 100 percent graduation rate, and we will continue to work to see more students walk across the graduation stage,” added Booker. “To have our graduation rate increase for the eighth consecutive year shows that we are moving in the right direction toward our goal.” Eight high schools have a graduation rate that exceeds 90 percent – Ashbrook, Cherryville, Stuart W. Cramer, East Gaston, Forestview, Gaston Early College, Highland, and South Point. Three years ago, only four high schools were higher than 90 percent.

Gaston County Schools also continues to see a steady increase in overall student proficiency and academic growth on end-of-grade and end-of-course state tests, according to information released today by the North Carolina State Board of Education.

For the 2016-2017 school year, 55.0 percent of students scored a Level III, IV, or V on the state tests. The READY state accountability program designates students with a Level III, IV, or V score performing at or above grade level expectations.

Student proficiency is 2.1 points higher than last year when Gaston’s overall score was 52.9 percent. In 2013-2014 when the state implemented new testing standards

The day started with Kooistra leading the Crusaders to a second-place finish in the team pursuit competition with a school-record time of 4:37.809 was the best in school history. Kuhfahl and Nick Oestreich, who also claimed the Sprint national championship last night, finished fifth and seventh, respectively, in the KILO Time Trial.

“This weekend was all about teammates helping each other,” Head Coach Derek Dalzell said. “From ensuring wheels were ready to having water available after events. Everyone did their part to help the team move in one fluid motion. While the championships will be remembered forever, it was the small details that added up to the big results. I couldn’t be any prouder of the guys and how they went about their business.”

During the weekend, Belmont Abbey captured nine individual medals, three individual national championships and had the male omnium national champion.

Collectively, the most significant gains in student proficiency occurred at the middle school level. All of the district’s 11 middle schools saw increases ranging from +2.4 to +10.1 over last year. Cramerton, Holbrook, Grier, and Chavis had the highest increases.

Additionally, Gaston had more schools to exceed academic growth expectations, increasing from 20 schools last year to 22 schools this year. Academic growth indicates whether students achieve a year’s worth of academic progress for a year’s worth of instruction. Growth is reported in one of three ways: Exceeded Growth, Met Growth, or Did Not Meet Growth.

Gaston County Schools had 22 schools to exceed academic growth expectations.

Last year, 20 schools exceeded growth, and 18 schools exceeded growth in 2014-2015.

Among the elementary schools (grades 3-5),

Belmont Central, W.A. Bess, New Hope, Hawks Nest, Pinewood, Lowell, and Rankin had the highest proficiency rates.The elementary schools with the most significant increases in proficiency compared to last year were Hawks Nest (+18.2), Pleasant Ridge (+7.9), and Pinewood (+5.7).

Cramerton and Belmont had the highest proficiency for middle schools (grades 6-8).

Cramerton (+10.1), Holbrook (+9.0), Grier (+8.4), and Chavis (+7.8) had the most significant increases among middle schools.

Highland School of Technology and Gaston Early College had the highest proficiency among the high schools (grades 9-12).

Highland with 99.8 percent and Gaston Early College with 97.4 percent are among the top scores in the state for student proficiency.

The test scores released today are preliminary results. The results will be verified by the state and official results will be a part of the district and school report cards, which will be issued in November.

Test drive a car to support the South Point Marching Band If you are a South Point fan, you won’t want to miss supporting the South Point Band on Saturday, September 23 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at South Point High School where you can participate in the Ford Test Drive coordinated with Keith Hawthorne Ford of Belmont. The Keith Hawthorne Ford Test Drive is a fundraiser for the South Point Band that will be held in the parking lot behind South Point High School.

“There is no hard sell, and no follow-up call from Ford (unless you request one). They are there to help, but not push you to buy anything,” said Rhoda Berry, South Point Band Booster President.

If you are hungry after you drive, you can indulge in sweet treats, as band volunteers will host a bake sale with a variety of baked goods, also available for purchase. According to Tim Hamilton, South Point Band Director, there is no cost for the event. It is totally free and only involves 15-30 minutes of time. Participants must be 18 years and older and must have a valid driver’s license.

“Our band members at South Point are among the best, most talented students in our school and community. I truly appreciate any and all support from Belmont and the surrounding community,” said Hamilton.

The Ford Test Drive is just one of the many fundraisers that the South Point Band holds each year to help raise money to support the band programs. Other fundraisers include the fruit sale, which starts in October and Dewey’s Bakery, a popular store-front sale of cakes, cookies, gingerbread, and candy held from Thanksgiving-Christmas Eve. In the past, the band earned approximately 10% of their budget from the Ford Test Drive.

The South Point Band relies primarily on contributions and money raised from fundraisers to assist the school band programs. The South Point Band Booster Club helps coordinate fundraisers, volunteers, field trips, competitions, and assisting the band students at Friday night football games. Parents involved with the booster club spend countless hours helping maintain marching band uniforms, working fundraisers, moving equipment on and off the football field, amongst many other things. The funds earned from the band fundraisers are used for marching competitions, purchasing new instruments, instrument repairs, and uniforms, and many other things.

Raiders beat Cramer 41-14 moves to 5-0

The South Point Red Raiders continue to roll through the football competition. Last Friday South Point faced their toughest challenge yet from the up-and-coming Cramer Storm.

Both teams went into the game undefeated.

Cramer played well, but in the end they didn’t have enough to fend off the South Point onslaught. In an all-around good game South Point beat Cramer 41-16.

The Red Raiders are still undefeated sitting at 5-0. It looks like South Point’s Adam Hodge is doing a pretty good job in his first year as head coach.

“Overall it was a good win,” Hodge said. “I felt like the offense of line played well.”

Coach Hodge saw some glitches, but South Point played a solid game.

“We made some mistakes,” Hodge said.

Whatever mistakes the Red Raiders may have made in the end Hodge got the production from his team he wanted.

South Point jumped out to an early lead when Scottie Lee hit Ty Tinker with a 35 yd touchdown pass in the 1st quarter.

Jake Alexander scored for South Point in the 2nd off of a TD 43-yard run.

Those scores had the Red Raiders going into the locker room at halftime up 14-0.

At the beginning of the third quarter South Point’s Jake Alexander struck again, this time with a 44-yard touchdown dash.

Cramer started to get back in the game when Luke Carpenter hit Kendall Karr on a brilliant 79-yard touchdown toss.

With a little more than two minutes to go in the 3rd Jake Alexander responded for South Point with a 6-yard run.

In the 4th quarter Cramer hit paydirt again when Carpenter and Karr hooked up for a 30-yard touchdown pass.

After Cramer scored Jake Alexander answered the challenge yet again. Alexander broke free and went 50 yards for the score.

At this stage in the game South Point was beginning to put too much distance between themselves and the Storm. Ty Tinker scored in the closing two minutes on a 2-yard run to finish out the South Point scoring.

The South Point offense was very productive against Cramer.

“Scottie Lee played well,” coach Hodge stated. “Jake Alexander was spectacular.”

Describing Alexander’s performance as spectacular may have been an understatement. Alexander rumbled for 259 yards off of 29 carries and four touchdowns.

Cramer may have dropped to 3-1 but they have a lot to work with.

Against the Red Raiders, Cramer showed a balanced offense attack. The QB duo of Jaylen Rocquemore and Luke Carpenter will give opposing defenses things to worry about.

Cramer can run, but recently the Storm have shown that they have TD potential when they put the ball up top. The Carpenter to Karr connection is something to keep in mind.

Cramer still needs to work on turnovers.

Against South Point the Storm turned the ball

over three times, but to be fair Carpenter was putting the ball up in an attempt to get things going. Cramer had two picks and Cramer also gave up a fumble.

Now the Storm needs to get ready for their conference schedule. This week Cramer takes on the 3-1 Kings Mountain Mountaineers.

This week South Point has a bye, after that the Red Raiders will travel to Ashbrook.

Coach Hodge hopes to put the bye week to good use.

“We are 5-0,” Hodge went on. “I’m thankful for that. We still need to get better. We have a bye and then Ashbrook. We need to use it to get better. Build some depth, get better as a team.”

Cassidy Bonito had 33 assists, while Sarah Kenney chipped in 17 digs. The Crusaders (4-3) started out slow, dropping the first four points of the match, before rallying for a 5-4 advantage. With the score tied at 8, BAC scored three straight points to start a 10-4 run that led to an 18-12 lead. Lydia Sale closed out the set with the final kill in the 25-18 decision.

The Abbey completely dominated the second set,

posting 17 kills and no errors for a .739 hitting percentage.

The teams split the first four points, but the Crusaders tallied four straight points for a 6-2 lead. The score was 10-5 when BAC had runs of 8-0 and 7-0 around a service error to post the 25-6 victory.

The third set was almost as equally lopsided. Belmont Abbey scored the first four and eight of the first nine points. The Crusaders led 19-9 and 21-11 before closing out the match with the final four scores.

Pfeiffer, a former Conference Carolinas rival, falls to 0-6 with the defeat. The Falcons were led by Erin Errington’s seven kills.

Mountain Island overwhelms Commonwealth Charter in 56-0 win

High school sports are meant to be a place where teenagers can learn sportsmanship and teamwork. Sports programs are set up to allow young adults to prepare for their life as adults.

In many way high school sports are a protective bubble, a place where kids can highlight their skills.

However, sometimes the realities of the outside world seep in. How the young athletes handle such events often determines what type of adults they will be in the future.

That was the case when Mountain Island Charter football faced off against Commonwealth Charter. In a game that had to be called early because of a bench clearing incident Mountain Island shut out the Commonwealth Charter Bulls 56-0.

As the game got underway all was good. Mountain Island came out strong and showed why they’re one of the top 1A teams in the area. Mountain Island quarterback Marcus Gra-

ham played a great game. Head coach Robert Washington likes Graham’s progress.

“We went into things trying to get into a passing rhythm,” Washington said. “Marcus did some good things. He extended a lot of plays with his legs. He looked down field and hit the open receivers.”

Graham threw for 175 yards off of 13 attempts. He had four touchdowns, three of which went to CJ Stephens. Stephens ended the game with 6 catches and 104 yards of receiving.

As good as the passing game was going the Mountain Island running game was running just as well.

“The running backs did well,” coach Washington added.

Elijah Burris had a solid game. Burris had eight carries for 125 yards and one TD. The Mountain Island offense was basically unstoppable. In three quarters of play the Raptors accumulated 333 yards of total offense.

“The defense shut them down,” Washington went on to say. “The defense did great, they did a good job gang tackling and taking what the offense gave them.”

The Commonwealth Charter offense was limited to 91 yards of total offense.

As the game was unfolding certain things started to stand out. There were a lot of penalties. In all approximately 30 flags were thrown. Well over 60% of which went against the Bulls.

In the beginning of the 4th quarter Mountain Island running back Elijah Burris was tackled out of bounds near the Commonwealth Charter 5-yard line. The tackle came as the Raptors were on the verge of scoring again. As it turned out Burris just happened to go out of bounds on the Commonwealth Charter side. After the play was over Burris and other Mountain Island players were accosted. The Commonwealth Charter bench cleared and a melee ensued.

The referees quickly restored order. All but three Bulls

players were ejected. No MICS player left the Raptor bench area. No MICS player was flagged.

As a result of the ejections the game was called.

Coach Washington was very disappointed and upset that things went the way that they did.

“The kids we’re disappointed they couldn’t finish the game,” Washington said. “The game needed to be called for safety.”

Washington was very proud of the fact that his team did not retaliate or get caught up in the heat of the moment.

“I told the kids I was proud of them for doing what we told them to do,” Washington said. “They were first class.”

Sometimes something bad can be the catalyst that fosters in something good.

For the Mountain Island players the events of Friday night caused them to walk away from the game with a new appreciation of what sportsmanship and self control are all about.

Now the Raptors have to put this game behind them and get ready to play a very tough Bessemer City Yellow Jackets team. BC is 4-0.

Washington knows his team needs to be ready for this one.

“We have to bring our A-Game” Washington added.

Paws in the Park set Event Connections Planners and City of Belmont Park and Recreation Department have teamed up for the “1st Annual Paws in the Park Belmont” Event.

The Schiele Museum of Natural History and Planetarium presents a day of exploration and insight Saturday, September 23. Reptile and Amphibian Day will be from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. featuring live animal friends from The Schiele Museum. This day will be incredible for all ages to get up close with some fun, not so slimy creatures.

Guests will have the opportunity to see and touch live snakes, alligators, frogs and other reptiles and amphibians.

There will be a chance to predict the winner of the annual turtle race and win a prize if you’re correct! Visitors can play reptile bingo, learn how to identify frog calls, and even explore the pond’s critters without getting wet. At-

tendees can take advantage of the beautiful fall weather and participate in a scavenger hunt on The Schiele’s peaceful nature trail. For those with interest, there will be a live snake feeding at 1 p.m. showing how snakes strike and envelop their food.

Admission into Reptile and Amphibian Day is only $3 for members and $3 + general admission for nonmembers. General admission rates vary but can be found on The Schiele’s website.

“There’s something for everyone at the Schiele Museum’s Reptile and Amphibian Day, from live animals to see and touch, to games for the kids to identification tips for homeowners,” said Stephenie Berggrun, a Schiele Museum

educator and architect behind this event. “Don’t miss our Turtle Races, will you pick this year’s winning Schiele Turtle and win a prize?”

Whether you do or don’t like scaly critters, September 23 is the perfect opportunity to learn about these creatures we share an earth with.

Let Me Run Club at Pinewood Pinewood Elementary School is excited to offer running clubs for both boys and girls this fall. Let Me Run is a running program for 4th-5th grade boys, but it’s more about the boy than the run. Counteracting the negative pressures society places on boys, the program uses running as the vehicle to inspire, teach, and reach them.

Girls on the Run, for 3rd - 5th grade girls, inspires girls to take charge of their lives and define the future on their terms.

Registration at Pinewood is now open.
