Mt. Holly council Oks funds for River Sweep By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com
Last week saw Neil Brennan with the Lake Wylie Marine Commission give the Mt. Holly city council and ear and eyeful on the deplorable state of trash along that body of water's shores and the annual effort to clean it up known as River Sweep. The presentation was especially appropriate since the city itself owns some shoreline property and trash is no respecter of municipalities when it washes ashore. After all was said and done, the council
agreed to give $500 towards the upcoming Oct. 3, 14th annual River Sweep event- provided volunteers scour the city property shoreline and remove any trash they find there. The money will be used for event promotional materials as well as things like gloves, porta potties, hand sanitizer, and first aid kits. Last year, between 800-1000 volunteers took part in River Sweep. Many used their own boats to prowl the shoreline looking for trash. Some folks used kayaks to probe into narrow places that larger watercraft could not go. see more RIVER SWEEP page 2
