Brevard Station Museum traces Stanley history By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com

There are several good history museums in our area and the one in Stanley is right up there at the top of the heap. Even though it’s on Main St. in Stanley, the facility is named Brevard Station Museum, the reason being the fact that before it

took its present moniker, Stanley was known as Brevard Station for the railroad depot that was there years ago. The station was the place that men who enlisted in the Confederate army in Dallas about three miles away would march to and get on the train bound for boot camp in Raleigh. See MUSEUM page 3

Two dozen kids showed up at Holly Hills apartments in Mt. Holly last Thursday for the free lunch program. So many came that a run had to be made for more sandwiches. Photo by Alan Hodge

Some folks say there’s “no free lunch” but that’s not the case now that the YMCA, dedicated volunteers, and Gaston County Schools have teamed up in a program named “Read Feed Lead” that focuses on keeping kids’ minds and muscles active while offering a nutritious midday meal. Last week saw a large group of kids at Holly Hills apartments in Mt. Holly avail themselves of a nutritious lunch that consisted of a cold cut sub, fruit, vegetable,

and milk. The food was supplied by Gaston County Schools Nutrition Dept.. The labor of love to get it placed before the kids was provided by the Stowe YMCA. Holly Hills, 635 Noles Dr., is part of Mt. Holly Municipal Housing - low income housing. So far this summer, the lunch program has been held there four times. Last week’s event saw two dozen kids show up- so many that another run to the Gaston Schools main kitchen in Lowell for more sandwiches had to be made. See LUNCH page 3
