Nellie's Southern Kitchen opens to great fanfare in Belmont By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gamil.com
After many months of hard work getting the building at 36 N. Main St. in downtown Belmont ready, the Jonas family has opened Nellie's Southern Kitchen Restaurant. The opening for business took place Monday at 11am. The family bought the 80-year-old building in 2013. It had been among other things a consignment shop. Extensive renovations and challenging weather caused some delays in opening but it's all good now. The musical Jonas Brothers- Kevin, Jr., Nick, Joe, and Frankie as well as their father Kevin, Sr. were on hand at a special preview event on June 7 that resembled a Hollywood gala premier. A host of local officials, dignitaries, politicians, friends of the Jonas family, beautiful people, and other luminaries stood outside on the sidewalk eagerly waiting for the doors to open. Folks craned their necks hoping to get a glimpse of the Jonases. A drone hummed overhead filming the scene. When the restaurant doors were unlocked the throng surged forward, full of excitement. Once inside, everyone ogled the mix of modern and country décor as well as the larger than life-size portrait of Nellie Jonas, Kevin Sr.'s grandmother, who the restaurant is named for. She's pictured wearing a flowing white dress with a banjo in one hand, an iron frying pan in the other, spools of thread tied around her waist, and a chicken on her arm. A special feature of the restaurant will be a two-story, 44-seat outdoor dining terrace and bar that overlooks the main square and City Hall across the street. For a meal on the go, Nellie’s A large crowd of dignitaries and other invited guests attended the sneak preview of the much anticipated Nellie's Southern Kitchen Restaurant in Belmont last week. Mt. Island Charter School kids ready for summer reading By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com
Now that school is officially over, reading is something kids should still do over the summer. Realizing this, the second grade classes at Mt. Island Charter School have been making Little Free Libraries so that anyone who needs a book to read can have one handy. The MICS administration building is the site for a Little Free Library created by Ms. Ewart's second graders. “It's a wonderful opportunity to share the love of reading,” Ewart said. The kids used a large, red, plastic box to create a colorful and durable container for books. The idea is for borrowers to leave a book when they take one so that others can have something to read. Last Thursday morning the second graders marched out of their classrooms, made their way up the hill to the administration building, and held a formal dedication for the Little Free Library. MICS K-8 literacy coach Meghan Cisar had this to say about the lil' library. “This will really help encourage summer reading,” she said. Second grader Eden Lewis, 8, liked the Mt. Island Charter School second grade students Zach Holland and Temperence concept as well. Suggs cut the ribbon officially opening the school's Little Free Library for business “With the little library we won't have any last Thursday. slump in our summer reading,” she declared.
