Shining Hope Farms brightening lives with Hippotherapy By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com

Sir Winston Churchill is often credited with the phrase “there's something about the outside of a horse that's good for the inside of a man”. Well, at Shining Hope Farms near Stanley and Mt. Holly, that saying well applies to folks of both genders and a wide variety of ages who are overcoming disabilities with a therapeutic program known as Hippotherapy. So, what is “Hippotherapy”? It is a physical, occupational or speech and language therapy treatment strategy that utilizes equine movement. Hippotherapy literally means "treatment with the help of the horse" from the Greek word, "hippos" meaning horse. Shining Hope Farms is the only facility in the Gaston, Mecklenburg, Lincoln, and Iredell counties region to offer Hippotherapy. The Shining Hope Farms story goes back to 2002 when Milinda Kirkpatrick started the program on her farm at the end of Whipporwill Lane off Stanley-Lucia Rd. “We had 25 participants that year,” she said. “Now, there are 179 people who take part.” In 2002 there were five horses in the program, now Kirkpatrick has a “fleet” of 20 steeds with a couple of Shetland ponies recently added for non-riding “personal pony” use. The staff at Shining Hope Farms has grown as well. Originally it was Kirkpatrick and a few volunteers. Now, there's a total of around 20 therapists, riding instructors, and support staff. The City of Belmont has received $100,000 that will go towards finishing construction of the new Kevin Loftin Riverfront Park on East Catawba St. Duke Energy announced almost $730,000 in grants for nine water quality projects in the Carolinas, including $100,000 each to Belmont, Rock Hill and Catawba County. The money comes from Duke’s Water Resources Fund. Recipients are selected by an independent body that includes five environmental experts and two Duke employees. “We will use the funds to provide river access (boat landing) and recreational and environmental education opportunities,” said Belmont Parks and Rec director Reba Edwards. “We are really excited to receive this money and grateful to Duke Energy for considering our project worthy to receive funding.” Belmont mayor Charlie Martin accepted the grant at a reception at the U.S. National Whitewater Center last week. “Our town is growing, and public access to the Catawba River is vital for our residents and visitors, said Martin. “This grant will enhance our new Kevin Loftin River-

front Park by providing access to the Catawba. I was thrilled to accept the Water Resources Fund grant on behalf of our city council.” Belmont city manager Adrian Miller was also glad to get the grant. “The Kevin Loftin Riverfront Park will be a signature destination park for Belmont and eastern Gaston County,” Miller said. “The park will provide great opportunities for recreation, relaxation, and access to the Catawba River. The $100,000 grant from the Duke Energy Water Resources Fund will help us provide much needed public access to the river. The grant will help provide a canoe and kayak launch, powerboat launch, and pier at the boat landing area that has been added to the park. We anticipate that this newly renovated boat landing area will be a popular and family-friendly area for fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and power boating. It will also let visitors to Belmont entering from Charlotte on Wilkinson Boulevard to immediately know that Belmont is a riverfront town. “ Other communities receiving grants include: Rock Hill, $100,000 to build an im-

They're big. They're shiny. They've been a long time coming. But now they're here and ready to go into action. What's all the excitement about? The two new engines that were delivered a couple of weeks ago to the Mt. Holly Fire Department. They will be replacing trucks dated 1989 and 1992. The new rigs are the first fresh ones MHFD has had since 2002. “We are extremely appreciative of the city leaders and citizens in making these trucks available to us,” said deputy chief D.C. Spry. “We hope they will serve the city for a long time.” Indeed, fire chief Ryan Baker estimates the trucks should last at least 15 years. The trucks were built by the Smeal Mfg. Co. in Snyder, Nebraska. They were delivered to MHFD HQ on May 3 and should be placed into service any day now. One of the trucks will be stationed at HQ and the other will be deployed at the Catawba Heights station.
