Belmont recognizes firefighter Tony Austin for 51 years of service By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com
Fifty-one years is a long time to dedicate to any endeavor, especially if that time involves putting out flames and helping folks in all kinds of emergency needs, but that's just what Tony Austin has done with the Belmont Fire Dept. At its May 1 meeting, the Belmont city council recognized Austin for a lifetime of faithful and fearless service by presenting him with a beautiful plaque and proclamation. “I was blown away,” Austin said of the nod. “I was tickled to death to get it.” A Belmont native, Austin, 70, started with the Belmont FD way back in 1966. “It's just something our family did,” Tony said. “My older brother Jimmy was a firefighter and I went in behind him. It was something we did to help people.” Tony's son, Craig, is currently with Belmont FD serving as a Paid Division Captain. He credits his dad with passing on the love of the job to him. “When I was a child my dad use to take me to the fire station so I could The City of Belmont recently recognized Tony Austin (purple shirt) for a half century of service to the watch them do training and even on Belmont Fire Dept. The City of Belmont has a new city clerk on board. Jamie Campbell was hired a couple of weeks ago for the job. She will be replacing longtime city clerk Debra Brown who has been promoted to handle the city's human resources needs. “Jamie brings a wealth of knowledge to the City of Belmont from her previous employer,” Brown said. “She has a warm, friendly and radiate personality, and she will do an excellent job as our new city clerk.” Campbell is a native of Virginia and grew up in Minnesota. After graduating UNC-W in 2006 with a degree in Marketing, Campbell took a job with the Blumenthal Theater in its development and fund raising department. “I worked with sponsors, grants, and budget management,” she said. vice. I joined the Belmont Fire Department when I was 16 years old (that was the required age back then) in 1987. In 1990 I became a career firefighter and am still working here today and enjoy it everyday. My father never pushed me to join the department but always supported me like he would have in any career path I took.” Tony recently retired from Belmont FD, and served as both a volunteer and as a paid fill-in during his time on the rolls. As you might imagine, he saw plenty of action as a firefighter. “I remember one fire in the late 1970s at the old Chevrolet dealer body shop,” Austin said. “There was a Vega car in there. The engine block is magnesium and it made a really hot fire. When we put water on it the whole thing flared up.” As far as close calls, Austin says he always tried to stay calm- “cool and collected” as he put it. Austin reminisced about his days at the old fire station on S. Main St. “The floors were wood and the weight of the fire trucks caused them to creak and the nails to pop out,” he said. “We had beds upstairs and a metal pole
