Sticks for Kids program has junior golfers swinging By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com

Give a kid a stick and all sorts of things can happen but in the case of last Wednesday's Sticks for Kids golf event at O'Darcy Mountain View Golf Center near Stanley it was all good. Sticks for Kids is a national endeavor to teach youth the ins and outs of golf. The Golf Course Builders Association of America established the GCBAA Foundation to provide the necessary tools and opportunities to allow the next generation of golfers to learn and enjoy the game. Since its establishment, the GCBAA Foundation has taken a special interest in supporting children by launching Sticks for Kids, a junior golf outreach program. The program provides clubs, bags, teaching materials, marketing materials, and instructors for participating courses. Children age 5-18 are taught the fundamentals of the game as well as life lessons such as etiquette, integrity, sportsmanship, safety, and respect for themselves and others. Last week's program was also made possible by a Gaston County Parks and Recreation grant. Mountain View owner Pat Cowell lauded Sticks for Kids. “Sticks for Kids is a great way to grow the game of golf and to get children outdoors and exercising,” Cowell said. The Clemson University golf team made a stop at O'Darcy on its way to the ACC Championship at the Old North State Golf Club. The players as well as coach Larry Penley shared their knowledge of the game with the dozens kids from area schools who showed up. The Clemson team was also on hand at last year's Sticks for Kids program at O'Darcy. See more STICKS FOR KIDS page 4

Some venerable vegetative genes were carried on this time last year when a group of folks got together in the front lawn at Holy Angels in Belmont and planted a sapling grown from an acorn descended from the hundreds of years old Angel Oak in Charleston. Revisiting the site by the side of Wilkinson Blvd. last week, attendees representing the Sisters of Mercy, Holy Angels, City of Belmont, Keep Belmont Beautiful and others stood under a brilliant sun and azure sky while they recalled that day and also unveiled a marker Jean Wilson (yellow) and Holy Angels President/CEO Regina explaining how the sapling Moody unveiled a plaque last week telling the story of the got where it is now and its Angel Tree and how its sapling got to the Holy Angels campus.
