Sole Patrol members make splash at Senior Games By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com
Once again several members of the Mt. Holly Parks and Rec. Sole Patrol senior citizens group are taking part in the Gaston County Senior Games and hauling in the medals. The Gaston games began March 31 and will continue until May 20.They are open to folks age 50 or older who live in Gaston or a surrounding county. The Gaston games are a lead-up to the NC State Senior Games that are held in Cary and Raleigh in the fall where thousands of competitors from 53 out of our state’s 100 counties take part. The Gaston competitions include a variety of sports ranging from shuffleboard to corn hole to track and field. Another aspect of the Senior Games are the Silver Striders national award winning walking program, and Silver Arts program for senior artists. Gaston Senior Games are held at places like Sims Park, Gas-
ton Senior Center, Bradley Center, Stuart Cramer High, and Liberty Lanes. Countywide, about 275 or so seniors are participating. In Mt. Holly some of the Sole Patrol crowd joining in the Senior Games includes Bobby Brooks, Ken Hodges, his wife Coleen Hodges, and Don Huffstetler. Brooks, a veteran Senior Games athlete, has so far garnered a gold medal in the football throw and a bronze in the softball throw. “Our Sole Patrol organizer Cheri Love encouraged me to sign up,” Brooks said. “The first year I worked really hard and took home 21 medals. I enjoy the competition and fellowship. It’s like a family.” Ken Hodges says the Senior Games ignites his strong sense of competition. So far he’s raked in gold medals in corn hole, shuffleboard mixed doubles and doubles, two bronze in billiards and spin casting, and a silver in singles shuffleboard. Last year, Ken won state gold in corn hole. See SENIOR GAMES page 2

Volunteers are important part of Mt. Holly Fire Dept.
By Alan Hodge and Roland Setzer
The ranks of the Mt. Holly Fire Dept. includes full time career firefighters, who form the backbone of the organization, and a group of nearly 20 volunteers who pitch in and flesh it out. The volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds. Two of the more interesting volunteers are the husband and wife team of Sarah Seiler and Robert Yonas. Both Seiler and Yonas, along with other MHFD volunteers, were officially sworn in at the April 10 meeting of the Mt. Holly city council. Yonas was recognized as Captain of Volunteers. Seiler’s full time job is COO of Lifeshare of the Carolinas. She was featured in the Feb. 9, 2017 issue of the BannerNews along with fellow female volunteer Angel Santana. Yonas brings a plethora of experience to his MHFD post. He’s a native of Baltimore and retired from the Secret Service in 2014 after ten years.
It’s a fact that only about 600,000 WWII veterans are still with us and that around 500 pass away every 24 hours. Given that fact, even thought Memorial Day is still about four weeks away, any day is a good day to remember what members of the Greatest Generation did. Earlier this year, January 5, 2017, Belmont lost what may have been its last WWII Marine when Claude Setzer passed away. Setzer served in the Marines in the South Pacific Theater of operations against the Japanese Imperial forces. Setzer was the son of John and Nannie Pennington Setzer. Born June 23, 1925 on the Majestic mill village in East Belmont and raised on the Imperial mill village. He grew up with three brothers, Robert, Roy and Sherman gardening, hunting, fishing and playing baseball. He attended Belmont Central and Belmont High School. So many of his favorite teachers in the Belmont school system touched his life such as Mr. Dick Cromlish, Mrs. Melva Gullick Neal, Mr. Roy Moore, Ms. Abbie Hall and Ms. Mary Hall.
