Progress on Belmont Trolley slow but sure By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com

“Things are moving in a slow but positive direction.” That’s what Belmont Trolley Inc. secretary Nate Wells had to say last week about efforts to get its century-old trolley car up and running on a route from downtown Belmont to Belmont Abbey College and back. The project has been in the works for about two years now. Recent work on the trolley has seen significant improvements made to the mechanical and structural aspects of the 28,000 pound car. On the outside, the trolley’s wooden body has been sanded and paint samples applied to get the right color combo. It was originally a yellowish color. “We are looking at painting it a cream and

red combination that will be very classy,” Wells said. The trolley’s interior has been gutted and is receiving a complete redo including seats reupholstered by Charlotte-based Donald’s Auto Upholstery in original rattan type material. “They did a great job,” said Wells. The undercarriage of the trolley is also getting a total rebuild. The trolley has two electric motors and one has been overhauled by Jenkins Electric. Cost of that job could have been in the $15k range, but according to Wells the company is going to work with Belmont Trolley, Inc. on the fee. “Jenkins has been very kind to us,” he said. Jenkins also machined the trolley’s wheels back to a smooth surface. ‘They were grooved from wear,” Wells said. See TROLLEY page 4

Mt. Holly Founder’s Day celebrates town’s heritage By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com

Mt. Holly was incorporated March 14, 1879 and that fact was celebrated recently by the annual Founder’s Day event. The Mt. Holly Historical Society rolled out the red carpet Sunday, March 26 at its 131 S. Main St. facility and hosted a large crowd that showed up to see how far the town has come in 138 years. Features of Founder’s Day included a group of students from Mt. Island Charter School who demonstrated games that kids in the days of yore amused themselves with including jacks, hide the thimble, hopscotch, and more.

To commemorate Founder’s Day, a new exhibit was premiered. Named “Mt. Holly School Days”, it was designed by Kevin Lamp. The room traces education in Mt. Holly going all the way back to the late 1800s and includes vintage desks, textbooks, diplomas, report cards, and photos of schools including one from the turn of the 20th century that looks very much like a shack. “We wanted to create a timeline,” Lamp said. “As we get more photos and artifacts we will fill more space.” Lamp says he is still looking for more photos and other items for the exhibit, especially from the 1960s era when schools were integrated. One of the most popular and interesting

features of Founder’s Day was the showing of a DVD entitled “Mt. Holly 1936”. The disc is made from a silent, home-style movie that was shot on the streets of downtown Mt.

Holly in that year by H. Lee Waters and is truly a window on how folks acted and interacted as they went about their daily routines. See FOUNDER’S DAY page 7

TechWorks of Gaston County initiative to address digital-era jobs from Belmont It started with a simple vision: spur innovation and entrepreneurship, create jobs and provide overall economic growth for Gaston County. Today, this vision and need becomes a relevant, functional work place for

gritty entrepreneurs with a passion for innovation and growth – TechWorks of Gaston County. Originally led by an immense community volun-

teer effort from both the public and private sectors of Gaston County, this new initiative – previously named GIGworks – aimed to establish a hybrid business incubator and gigabit technology center. See TECHWORKS page 3
