Spring means local bicycle riders getting ready to hit the road By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com

It’s been a long winter and with warmer weather here at last, local bicycle enthusiasts are itching to push some pedals. With that in mind, here are some local places to ride and tips for getting your bike ready for the road or trail. One of the best places to do some local off-road bicycle riding is Rocky Branch Park- just a stone’s throw from downtown Belmont. Rocky Branch Park is a 40 acre mountain bike and hiking park located at the western end of Woodrow Avenue. It currently has sev-

eral miles of single-track trail that are designed for mountain bikes, walking, and running. Parking for Rocky Branch Park is at the western end of Woodrow Avenue and the southern end of Sacco Street. To get to Rocky Branch Park, turn west onto Woodrow Avenue from Central Avenue or Main Street. The park will be at the end of the street, at the intersection with Sacco Street. Other local areas for trail riding include George Poston Park near Lowell, the U.S. National Whitewater Center across the Catawba River from Mount Holly, the Seven Oaks Trail, and the Kings Mountain Gateway. For those interested in road riding,

Steve Pepitone of South Main Cycles in Belmont has several suggestions. “There are lots of great options,” Pepitone said. “There’s the Belmont Loop which goes over Cramer Mountain, down New Hope Road to Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden, then over to Lower Armstrong Road. Some riders like to head down Union Road into York County. There’s great riding there.” Here’s another option. ‘There’s what we call the Spamerton route,” said Pepitone. “It goes through McAdenville, over Spencer Mt., Ranlo, and Cramerton. It’s about a 25-mile loop.” See BICYCLE page 2

“A special gathering of special people for a special occasion.” That’s how emcee Joe Lawing described the 28th annual Belmont Sports Hall of Fame banquet that was held March 23 in the fellowship hall of Park St. United Methodist Church. The event saw a packed house of nearly 300 folks witness the induction of three new members into the hallowed Belmont Sports Hall of Fame. Inductees included Linda McGinty, Jerry Haney, and the 2009 South Point High 3A state football championship team. Guest speaker was Cramerton native, 1980 South Point High graduate, and NFL coach Perry Fewell. The event was organized by South Point High athletic director Scott Lee. Corporate sponsor was McKenney car dealerships. The Hall of Fame selection committee consisted of Jim Biggerstaff, Bobby Brown, Scott Lee, Jeff Gibson, Lee Hyde, Reba Edwards, and Director Emeritus Art Shoemaker. Special guests included a sizable contingent of civic, scholastic, athletic, business and political luminaries. Belmont mayor Charlie Martin gave Fewell a key to the city. “I also want to personally congratulate the inductees,” Martin said. Fewell was formally introduced by Scott Lee. “This guy is gen-u-ine,” Lee said. “He is a worker and a winner.” Fewell has coached at a wide variety of college and pro venues. He is currently with the Washington Redskins. See HALL OF FAME page 4
