Jerry Haney Named to Belmont Sports Hall of Fame By Bobby Brown, BSHF committee member Jerry Haney, athlete and gentleman extraordinaire, will add prestige and honor to the Belmont Sports Hall of Fame when he is inducted into the Hall at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 23, at the Park Street Methodist Church Family Life Center. His picture will then be placed in the Hall at the Belmont Historical Society alongside some 66 other outstanding sports individuals and 11 sport championship teams. Haney, like many Belmont kids, started out on the red dusty playground baseball fields that were sprinkled around the city for the kids of the community. He was not just an ordinary player. His talents for the games on the athletic field were obvious from an early age to those that played with or saw him play. Moving on to stiffer competition in the Cramerton Recreation League, he continued to improve. Cramerton Middle School “Chefs” took top honors at last Saturday's RoboGaston event. The team will advance to Then came high school era sports, where he was a key player on five the Western NC finals. See RoboGaston event story and more photos on page 8. Something that everyone knows who lives or visits Belmont was officially recognized last week when the town was cited as having a "Great Main Street" by the 2015 Great Places in North Carolina awards program. The N.C. chapter of the American Plan-

Community garden sprouting in Mount Holly By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com
Spring is just around the corner and folks are working hard to get the Mount Holly community garden up and going. Last fall, folks like former Mount Holly mayor Bobby Black, his wife Melanie, and Mount Holly Farmer Market director Scott Griffin floated the idea of a community garden similar to the highly popular one in Belmont.
The next step involved procuring a plot of land for the garden. That's when First United Methodist Church offered use of a vacant plot next to its parking area. Helping that along was FUMC's pastor, Rev. Angela Pleasants who is a big fan of community gardens and helped launch a similar endeavor at her former place of employment, Central United Methodist Church in Charlotte.
