Belmont Central Elementary celebrates 45th anniversary

Belmont Central Elementary School celebrated its 45th anniversary on Sunday, January 31 with a special program and open house. Principal Phyllis Whitworth presided over the program, and approximately 200 people attended the celebration. Gaston County Board of Education vice-chairman Jeff Ramsey and South Point Township representative Chris Howell presented remarks during the ceremony along with Dr. Melissa Balknight, assistant superintendent for academic services. Retired principal Julius Barkley also spoke about his time at Belmont Central and mentioned highlights of the school’s history. Kim Parrish, the current Belmont Central Teacher of the Year, and Megan Whisnant, the school’s New Teacher of the Year, shared current information about the school and their connections to the school. The fifth grade chorus under the direction of Ricky Collins sang two songs: I Wish and Let Freedom Ring in Your Heart. Students and siblings Mason and Reese Braswell led the Pledge of Allegiance and student council members Drew Sprinkles, Claire Hux, Piper King and Charlie Price served as ushers. See CENTRAL page 3

At its regular monthly meeting last week, the Mt. Holly city council recognized three of its most outstanding citizens for their many, many years of unselfish service to the community. Long-time Woodlawn Funeral Services director Walter Sloope received the very prestigious Order of the Long Leaf Pine award from the State of North Carolina and Gov. Pat McCrory. Mayor Bryan Hough handed Sloope the beautiful, framed certificate as well as a key to the city. “This is an incredible honor and I am humbled to receive it,” Sloope said. In addition to his decades of service at Woodlawn, Sloope was also Mt. Holly Man of the Year in 2005 and past president of the Rotary Club. Black History Forum set for February 21st The City of Mount Holly Black History Committee will host its 13th Annual Black History Forum on Sunday, February 21, 2016 at 3:00pm. The event will be located at the Mount Holly Municipal Complex located at 400 East Central Avenue, Mount Holly. This year’s theme for the program is “A Community Give Back.” Award winners this year include” Achievment AwardReid High Class of 1966; Humanitarian Award- Michael, Lopez, Anders, PLLC. Musical entertainment will be provided. The event is free to the public. The Black History Forum is requesting that those who are able to do so, bring canned and other nonperishable goods to be donated to the Mount Holly Community Relief Organization (CRO).
