Last week's 24th annual Belmont Unity Day event honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a combination of soulful music, fond remembrance of that great man's legacy, and recognition of how hard, heartfelt work has helped make the local community one where folks of all races get along better than in a lot of places. The service was held at Belmont Foursquare Church and singers from that congregation as well as the Hood Memorial AME Zion Church Youth Choir and the Mt. Pleasant Men's Choir provided several interludes of stirring tunes throughout the evening. First Foursquare's Rev. Kenneth Ford and Mount Moriah Baptist's Rev. Kenneth Alexander welcomed the capacity crowd. “This is a wonderful occasion and a wonderful blessing,” Alexander said. “It is a day to stop
and remember that Dr. King is worthy to have recognition.” Alexander went on to declare that “Belmont is a model city not just in the county, state, and nation, but in the world for racial harmony.” Marion Steve McClain led the traditional Unity Candle lighting by South Point High students Reginald Dawkins, Yaneli Banuelos, and Rosie Tran. “I'm proud to be from Belmont,” McClain said. “If he were here, Dr. King would be proud of how far we have come, but we still have a long way to go.” Patricia Brannon Franks introduced student speakers Amari Andrews and Bianaca Hanafin. Nine-year-old Andrews, who attends Belmont Central Elementary School shared her thoughts See more UNITY DAY page 2

After many, many hours of work, a study on the past, present, and future of Wilkinson Blvd., aka US29/74, between Belmont and Cramerton was presented to local officials and other interested parties on January 15. The study was done by Demetri Baches, CEO of the consulting firm Metrocology. Baches and his staff looked at the boulevard from every possible angle including traffic flow, aesthetics, and future development. Dozens of slides showing the boulevard from the air, ground, and conceptually were also part of the event that was held in Cramerton Town Hall. Baches said the presentation was “very well received”.
