Zip Stowe named new Belmont Parks and Rec. director By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com
The City of Belmont has named Tareyton “Zip” Stowe as its new Parks and Rec. director. Stowe began his duties about two weeks ago. Stowe grew up in Mt. Holly and graduated East Gaston High and Western Carolina University. He has a lot of experience in the parks and recreation profession including 18 years with Mt. Holly Parks and Rec., one year with Hickory Parks and Rec., two years with Gastonia Parks and Rec., and eight years with Lowell Parks and Rec. “I applied for the Belmont job because the city is very progressive when it comes to fitness and parks and recreation,” Stowe said. Stowe says he especially likes working with youth sports. “There are about 300 kids in our basketball program and I would like to see that keep growing,” he said. One of the main things Stowe wants to see come to Belmont is a gym similar to the new one recently dedicated in Stanley's Harper Park. “We need a gym in Belmont,” Stowe said. “Right now we are using the facilities at Belmont Middle School and First Foursquare Church.” Stowe also said he would like to see a frisbee golf and pickle ball court built in Belmont. Overall, Stowe is looking forward to keeping Belmont at the forefront of the local parks and recreation scene. “There are a lot of good things in Belmont now and in the future.”
