Belmont Park and Recreation Director, Sallie Stevenson, headed for retirement By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com

Sallie Stevenson, Belmont’s Parks and Recreation director since 1987, will be retiring effective January 30 after 28 years on the job. During her tenure, Stevenson saw the recreational scene in Belmont grow by leaps and bounds and helped guide her department through a period of unprecedented growth. A native of Iredell County, Stevenson earned degrees from Montreat Anderson College and Appalachian State University before taking a job with Statesville Parks and Recreation. “I started at the bottom as a parks laborer doing things like keeping up the ball fields,” she said. After about 18 months at that gig, Stevenson went to the Cleveland County Boys Club as athletic director and stayed a similar amount of time. In February 1987 she came to Belmont and began working as programming supervisor for recreational activities, a job she held until November 1998 when she was promoted to her current position as parks and recreation director. Under her guidance, several programs have blossomed. One of her proudest accomplishments has been the growth of the Gad-Abouts senior citizen group. “At first it only had fifteen members and was called the Golden Oldies,” Stevenson said. “We renamed them the GadAbouts and currently there are eighty members. They are an active, integral part of the community. I’ve learned a lot from them.” Other senior citizen groups that have been established on Stevenson’s watch include the Aquaducks, Senior Stretch, and Senior Line Dance. Classes at the recreation center that Stevenson started include shag, karate, judo, zumba, guitar, ceramics, Engineering for Kids, Fit 4 You, crafts, summer day camp, and mom’s morning out. The October 1 paper announced that the “Fighting Yank” WWII statue that had been moved to Stowe Park would be dedicated on the 4th. The October 1 issue also took a look at Goshen Presbyterian Church on its 250th anniversary. That issue’s inside pages contained an article and photos recognizing Ida Rankin Elementary Principal’s Pride and Students of the Month. October 8 arrived and that issue of the paper featured the Fighting Yank dedication ceremony and a page of pictures of Gov. McCrory’s participation. The governor’s visit to Belmont was an exciting one. Hundreds of folks, including a group of WWII Photo by Alan Hodge veterans attended the historic event. Pat McCrory all October 15 popped up and the Banshowed up at the official dedication of the Fighting Yank WWII nerNews for that week announced that the memorial statue in Stowe Park on Oct. 4, 2014. Varn, an accomplished singer, photographer, and musician, left Belmont several years ago to seek her fortune. “I've been living in Charleston for the past eight years but got off the music track,” she said. “I was performing here and there but nothing serious, nothing regular. I became an accountant. "The very talented Jason Mitcham is the cousin of a friend of mine and we met; he saw me perform in Charleston and then I performed at his wedding in New York. We toyed with the idea of collaborating on a visual art animation/music piece. This finally came to fruition after he already had the Avett Brothers "Head Full of Doubt" music video under his belt. "We collaborated on "Three" which has made the rounds, being featured at the Northside Festival in Brooklyn NY, the Lumen Festival in Staten Island NY, and in exhibit at a gallery at Davidson College for several months.
