Stanley’s new Tug Deason Gym officially open By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com
The new Stanley Parks and Recreation Tug Deason Gym was officially opened for business with a ribbon cutting ceremony last Thursday. The facility is located in Harper Park on Blacksnake Rd. The gym bears the name of Stanley Parks and Rec. director Tug Deason who was instrumental in getting the project up and running. Deason was joined at the ribbon cutting by a number of local, county, and state officials who praised his work for the Town of Stanley. “I want to thank Tug for the vision he had that made this gym possible,” said Stanley town manager Heath Jenkins. Stanley mayor Andrew Quinley also thanked Deason and presented him with a proclamation from the town naming the gym in his honor. “The whole town of Stanley is lucky to have Tug,” Quinley said. Ever humble, Deason took the microphone briefly. “I love this community and always will,” he said. “I am proud my family and others will get to use the gym.” The 8,000 sq. ft. gym itself is one of the finest in the county. It cost $500,000 to build but will be paid for mostly by donations. Local businessman Jim Lanier chipped in $50,000 and Gaston County added another $250,000. The gym has a state of the art LED remote control scoreboard, top quality hardwood flooring, great heating and A/C, restrooms, a concession stand, and office. Construction is brick and metal and measures 90x110 ft. Ground was broken for the gym last January. Deason oversaw the project and hired contractors. The new gym is replacing the 60-year-old Kiser Center. The second half of 2016 saw work started on rebuilding First Baptist Mt. Holly, a state football championship come to Belmont, and the 61st annual Christmas tree lighting event in McAdenville. July July 2016 dawned hot and bright and the BannerNews kicked off the start of summer with news that the Brevard Station Museum in Stanley was open for visitors and had a huge collection of local artifacts on display. Another story in the July7 edition focused on the good showing that local contestants made in the Miss NC contest. Miss Belmont Deandra Easter came in fourth overall. The July 14 version of the BannerNews informed readers that Cramerton had adopted a new logo featuring a goat in a canoe. The “float your goat” theme was a reference to Goat Island Park and
the South Fork River. Also on the pages of the July 14 was an article marking the 100th anniversary of the Great Flood of 1916 that had devastated our area in that month and year. The Belmont Fire Dept. got some press from the BannerNews in July 2016 when a story was featured focusing on the new rescue boat the department received. Firefighters were trained on the craft’s operation over a period of days on the Catawba River. Rounding out July 2016 was an article on the huge conflagration that nearly destroyed First Baptist Church in Mt. Holly. The blaze needed over 150 firefighters to bring under control.
