New Stanley Middle School project progressing rapidly By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com

Ever since ground was broken on July 19, 2016 for the new Stanley Middle School, work on the project has moved forward at a brisk pace. So much so that the plan is to move students into the shining educational edifice soon after the first of 2018. The building represents an investment of around $27.5 million funded by a school bond referendum approved by voters in 2007. The new school will accommodate around 800 sixth through eighth graders from the Stanley and Mt. Holly areas. Total capacity will be around 1,000 students. The two-story, state of the art facility will feature 135,000 sq. ft. of space in more than 40 classrooms equipped with the latest technology and teaching aids. In a “flip-flop” of the

For the first time in a long time the Belmont Police Department is fully staffed with a number of officers having been hired since February of this year. “We are very excited to be fully staffed,” Chief Chad Hawkins said. “We have a great staff with a lot of talent. Several of the newly hired officers are veterans and bring a wealth of knowledge to the organization. The officers fresh out of the academy are adapting well, and are very eager to learn and grow. Belmont Police Department has been through a lot of changes over the past few years. We appreciate the community's support, and ask for patience as we move forward.” New officers include: Jeff Clark (Part Time Detective) Came to Belmont PD after retiring from the Gastonia Police Department with 30 years service. He has a mas-

Anthony “T.J.” Green (Officer) Came to Belmont PD from the Cherryville Police Department where he worked in communications and as a police officer for six Years. He holds numerous law enforcement certifications and is also a CPR instructor.

Jason Dee (Officer) Came to Belmont PD from the Kings Mountain Police Department where he worked as a police officer for six years. He holds numerous law enforcement

certifications and is also active within the faith based community as a mentor to youth.

This week's Belmont Sports Hall of Fame inductee spotlight shines on Devon Lowery whose induction into the Belmont Sports Hall of Fame will occur on Tuesday, October 24, 2017. Other inductees include Rick Cherry, Stephen Cowie, and the 2011 NCHSAA State Champion South Point High School Baseball team. Devon is a 2001 graduate and three-sport standout athlete at South Point High School in football, basketball, and baseball. Devon earned all-conference honors four times and named to the All-Gazette Team twice from 1997 to 2000 as a member of the Red Raider football program. He was the 2000 Gazette Offensive Player of the Year and the first quarterback to be asked to run the latest iteration of the vaunted "Red Bone" Offense. The 1999 Red Raider football team began to re-write the proud tradition of the school and started a run of twelve
