Susan Clements touched a lot of young lives during her career at FUMC Belmont

Stanley Middle School held a drive by farewell for its departing eighth grade students. It was a bittersweet moment to see the kids go, but everyone was happy at the thoughts of the bright futures they will have and all they will accomplish in high school. More photos on page 11.

At the end of this month, when First United Methodist Church Belmont Child Development Center assistant director Susan Clements retires, she will leave behind a 39 year legacy of love and learning.

Clements grew up in a military family and says she’s from “all over the place”, but landed in Gaston County in 1972.

“I graduated from Ashbrook High in 1974,” she said.

She married her husband Ronnie and held jobs at John’s Hobby Shop, Akers Motor Lines, and the kindergarten at Belmont Central.

Fate had other career plans for Clements.

“One of the teachers at FUMC left and I got the job,” Clements said. “I taught the two year olds for six years.

My son was in my first class.”

Clements had found her niche.

“That’s when I knew I loved working with the younger kids,” she says.

“They have been my calling.”

Clements explained what her favorite part of working at FUMC has been.

“I love how eager the kids are to learn and how happy they are when they figure something out,” she said.

“They also love for me to tell them stories- any kind of story. They also love to dance.

We have a part of class called Spotlight Dance and they get up one by one and dance to music.”

Getting the kids ready for the day when they enter the school system is also a big part of their FUMC day.

Local senior is a nationally ranked athlete

Local athlete 85-year-old David Hostetler, Sr., has been recognized by USA Track & Field for his outstanding accomplishments in a number of Masters Event sports.

The Masters Events are for folks aged 30 to 100+ years in age. Hostetler competes against other athletes of his own age locally and in other places such as Winston-Salem, Charlotte, Yadkinville, and Durham. Sports he competes in includes a variety of track and field events.

Hostetler learned of his rankings after receiving a copy of the April/May issue of National Masters News.

My Opinion: Hard times come again no more Back in the 19th century there was a popular tune called “Hard Times Come Again No More”. It was written by a guy named Stephen Foster who wrote a lot of tunes that currently are considered non-PC-, but at least they were not like the obscene/vulgar trash that passes for music nowadays. Anyway, part of the lyrics went “Many days you have lingered around my cabin door. Hard times, Hard times come again no more.”

Well, I guess it’s clear to anyone with a nose that we are in the midst of “challenging” times right now what with a plague and riots, TV news still being allowed to broadcast inflammatory propaganda ad nauseum, and Congress being in session. Mark Twain said that the nation was in its greatest peril when Congress was at work. That’s what he said all right and I agree totally.

So far we have been in our present state of turmoil for about five months. It seems like forever.

However, if you stop and think about it in terms of what folks in the past had to deal with and how long hard times hung around their cabin doors, we are only getting a taste of what they experienced- and overcame.

For instance, the Great Depression went on for nearly ten years (1929-1939). It was a global economic snafu that was the worst financial downturn in the history of the industrialized world. It was a factor that led to the rise of that German guy with the little toothbrush moustache and WWII. Speaking of WWII, now there’s a good example of hard times. Especially for the 85 million folks that lost their lives. I think about the Londoners who were bombed night after night by the Luftwaffe. Don’t forget

If you cry about the current price of meat in the food stores and the occasional lack of your favorite cut, think about how many people in this world, heck, in this nation, state, and county, who are really hungry. Baloney is a luxury to a lot of them. Some people would kill for a hot dog weenie.

There have been many “Ages” throughout history. For instance- the Iron Age, the Age of Enlightenment, the Age of Anxiety. Currently we live in the Age of the Offended….

I made that term up but that’s what it is..the Age of the Offended. Everybody is pissed at someone, some group, or some thing. Where did all this anger come from? We seem like children who when they don’t get their way or what they want for Christmas sit down in the floor and start screaming and kicking their legs or they throw a toy or hamburger against the wall.

Calm down. Stop blaming everything on everybody else. Stop saying everyone in our nation’s history was a bad guy. Get a job. Get a grip. Turn off the TV except to watch old black and white movies that teach a moral. Read the Bible. Swill an adult juice box through a straw. Listen to Ralph Vaugh William’s oboe concerto. Listen to the Beatles. All things must pass….Even hard times around a 21st century cabin door.

nights in a faraway majestic setting. Wait for it…. Kings Mountain. That is about as far as I am willing to travel with a 3-year-old in tow, none the less, I am so excited and Kings Mountain is a beautiful destination.

So, I have packed my bags with the minimalist lifestyle at the top of my list of priorities. I am convinced that this year I am going to live a simple life, free of clutter and distraction. A life where I can focus on family. What better way to start than in a 180 square feet Airstream?

By the time you read this, there is no telling what will have happened as a result of this story. As my fingers click away on the keyboard, I can tell you that my lawn mower is jacked up at this very moment… No, literally it’s in my garage on a jack where the left front tire should go; it’s jacked up. As for the rest of it, there is no telling if anything else is damaged on it but I have a massive bald spot in my front yard that’s the size of the old gal’s cutting deck from her “graceful landing”.

What happened, you ask?

Here’s the scoop, as they say in the business.

It all started probably around a month ago when I noticed that the left front tire on my Yard Machine had began to go flat. I could still ride around on it but I knew that I would be riding on the rim by the time I was finished with the acre plot of land that my house sits on, so I decided to drive the old gal down to my neighbor’s house to see if he had an air compressor.

Luckily, he did and after some catching up on things, he pumped the tire up and I was good to go! The yard was finished in a couple of hours and I put her in the garage to sleep before I would need to tame the yard again in a couple of weeks.

The time came around again and off to the garage I went to roll her on out and this time, the tire was completely flat. The rim had sunk to the floor as if the rubber had melted. There was no taking this one anywhere to pump it up. I would have to find a replacement. I called up Kimberly’s grandfather because he works on lawnmowers for a living and I thought that maybe he may have a spare tire that would fit. After driving down and searching for a couple of hours, we finally found a match! It held a good seal with no air leaks coming out; this was going to work. I got it home and after putting it on, I had a great lawn mowing day! I drove the old gal back into her chamber for another slumber and said, “Until next time!”

Another couple of weeks passed by and here we are in

the present. Kimberly and I had some things we needed to do while I was on my off days, so our plan was that I would cut the grass in the morning and be finished by noon so I could shower and we could then run our errands. Sounds simple enough, right? Buckle up…

Upon opening my garage door, my heart sank straight to my knees as I looked down and saw that the tire that worked phenomenally the other week, had detached from its rim. There was no saving this one and I was going to have to buy a new tire. A trip to tractor supply and $45.00 later, I returned and attached the adapter along with the bushing it came with to discover that there was just barely enough room for the locking pin to fit in its’ hole. I took the pin and opened it up, forced it into the hole and wrapped the remaining pin around the shaft.

I pulled on the tire and was positive it was locked down.

I ran out of time, so it had to wait until the next day to get tested.

The next day I came out bright and early and brought her out. The choke pulled up,

the brake w a s pushed in, with the turn of a Shelton Fisher key, and boogityboogityboogity it was time to go racing! I made it down to the bottom of my first hill like I always do and began to take her on the first right turn in the front yard, but without warning I was suddenly propelled forward and into the grass like I had never been before. The left tire rolled away, abandoning me as if I had abused it in some way and it had taken enough. I cut the mower off as fast as I could, trying to process everything that happened all while speaking in a series of tongues that children eat bars of Dial soap for at a volume that could be heard in outer space.

So, there you have it.

Maybe by the time this publishes there will be a resolve, maybe not. I guess John Prine was right when he sang, “That’s the way that the world goes round”.

‘Council of Understanding’ assembled to discuss future of Confederate statue in Gaston County With one selection by each member of the Gaston County Board of Commissioners and five remaining members selected by Chairman Tracy Philbeck and Commissioner Tom Keigher, the 12 members of the Council of Understanding are now set.

The Council, which Keigher will chair, will meet to discuss the future of the confederate statue outside

the Gaston County Courthouse. The statue was gifted to the County in 1912 by the United Daughters of the Confederacy and was moved from the old county courthouse to its current location in front of the current county courthouse in 1998.

The council will meet until it has reached a decision to recommend to the Board of Commissioners for action.

The council’s first meeting took place Tuesday, July 7 from 12 to 1:30 p.m. This will follow with a second meeting on Thursday, July 9, at the same time. The meetings will take place inside the Harley B. Gaston Public Forum at the Gaston County Courthouse, 325 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way, in Gastonia. They will be livestreamed on the County’s website, Gaston-

Gov.com, and will also be available on the county’s government channel – available to Spectrum and AT&T U-Verse subscribers.

There will be limited public seating available for these meetings. Those wishing to attend will undergo temperature screenings and a health questionnaire. Capacity in the forum will be limited to allow for social distancing and attendees will be asked

to wear face coverings.

The council is made up of two groups of six individuals – one group that supports the relocation of the monument and the other which wants to have it remain in front of the courthouse. Those individu-

als are: Bruce Cloninger, Bill Starnes, D’Andre Nixon, Rev. Tom Gillespie, Jane Dye, Rev. Dickie Spargo, Dr. Ed Smith, Moises Miranda, Joe Will, Eric Riley, Cheryl Comer and James Muhammad.

“One joy for me is the fact that at the beginning of the year they can’t spell their name but by the end of the year they can,” Clements said.

“I tried to teach them a letter of the alphabet each week so they know how to write it.”

Clements has also stressed the importance of a wellrounded day for her kids.

“They get outdoor recess at least a couple of times a day,” she said. “They hear a Bible story on Tuesday and a music teacher comes on Friday.”

Clements says she has had good fortune to have worked with her boss, Linda Smith, who is FUMC’s Childhood Development director.

“We have worked together well, we are like sisters,” she said. “Linda is the reason this place is so successful.”

Smith returned the compliment.

“I would like to thank Susan Clements for giving 39 years of service to First United Methodist Church Child Development Center,” she said. “What a legacy of love and care she has given to our church and the Belmont community. Susan has enriched the lives of so many

children over the years. She is an institution in our CDC program. She’s a joy to work with and I will always treasure our work relationship that we have shared for 39 years. Many fond memories!! This community has been blessed by her leadership and her compassion for children. Susan has been a delightful co-worker and a great friend to everyone and yes, Thelma, you will be sorely missed by me, Louise. Happy retirement! Much love goes with you from all of our staff.

May God bless you, Susan.”

July 1 marked 39 years since Clements first arrived at FUMC, so what does she plan to do in her retirement?

“We have a little cabin in Rutherford County,” she said. “My goal is to travel and camp.”

As far as advice to the FUMC CDC teachers now and in the future, Clements offers this.

“Keep it simple,” she said.

“Love the children like they are your own and they will love you right back. They will always remember your smile and that you made them happy.”

“I was well coached by Terry Martin.”

In the Throws Pentathlon Performance category, Hostetler was ranked first in the USA, first in North America, and seventh in the world.

The category includes javelin, hammer, #12 weight, discus, and shot put throws. First place equals who obtained the highest point average of five events. The record is not for one game or month but for the entire year.

Another event category that Hostetler took part in is the Super Weight Throw.

This event uses a 25-pound steel ball with a triangular handle attached.

When Hostetler’s chance to beat hos own 2019 record came, he gave it all he had.

“I used a centrifugal type throw,” Hostetler said. “My toes and knees felt like they

went into the concrete throwing pad. I obtained an excellent lift with my body and my hands went high over my head. That ball went like no other I had ever thrown.”

The throw was a record setter and placed Hostetler number one in the 85-year-old bracket for the USA, North America, and the world.

Hostetler is also ranked in the 50 meter dash, long jump, and high jump categories.

No matter where he goes, Hostetler shows his Gaston County pride.

“I practice on most of the fields in Gaston County,” said Hostetler. “I wear my Gaston County, North Carolina tshirts to all local, state, and national events. Win or lose, I love to meet athletes and people, play games, and show the colors of my county. The coronavirus has no effect on me walking, on jogging, and staying in shape outdoors.”

Meditations A story of two kingdoms I love the classic “A Tale of Two Cities”

by Charles Dickens. If you have not read the works, I am sure you heard the famous opening, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness.”

The writing of Charles Dickens is timeless as I often feel we are in such times. But, instead of talking about a tale of two cities, I am reflecting on a story of two kingdoms. The question I am wrestling with is which realm will define us; the Kingdom of the world or the Kingdom of God. “And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ.”

Ephesians 2:1, 4-5 NASB. When we live influenced by the flesh nature, we fall prey to the Kingdom of the world.

Our orientation of the will becomes hostile toward the things of God. But, the Kingdom of God transforms us, whereby the Spirit of God leads us. “For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.” Romans 8:5 NASB. Do our words and actions reflect the Kingdom of God’s living or the influences of worldly life? We all have needs, desires, and drives, but our approach should not be the same as how some fulfill the needs and drives

from the world’s standards. If Jesus is Lord, then sin and the world order cannot be our topography. Jesus becomes Rev. Angela Pleasants District Superintendent the environment that of Catawba Valley shapes us.

Methodist Churches When Jesus shapes our environment, we no longer see life from a worldly viewpoint. Whenever we view life from an earthly perspective, it will never be enough.

Our scales will be off-balance.

As a pastor in the United Methodist denomination and four years as a District Superintendent, I have seen competition run rampant among clergy and congregations.

Why? Because we base success on temporal scales rather than the Kingdom of God’s way of life. I see the conflict between Local Pastors and full ordination; Deacon and elders; small rural church and large urban churches.

To the world size matters, but in Kingdom living, there is no size. The Kingdom of God is not confined to a local congregation with an average worship attendance of 500-1000.

The Kingdom of God is global. If all we see is in our localized sphere, our vision is not big enough.

A tale of two Kingdoms, to which Kingdom will you belong? If we desire to progress in Christian life, then we must feed our minds on spiritual food. “For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, ‘Abba! Father!’” Romans 8:14-15 NASB.

Town of Ranlo approves budget The Ranlo Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the Town’s FY2021 total budget of $3,824,100.00, at its June 11 meeting. The Town’s fiscal year began July 1.

Included in the Town’s approved budget: No property tax changes; Modest increases in water, wastewater and garbage collection; $50,000.00 for engineering studies for renovations to Town Hall; $50,000.00 for Ranlo water tank restoration; $20,000.00 to research, plan, and implement Ranlo Lodge renovations; $25,000.00 for a new police vehicle; $10,000.00 for a zero-turn lawnmower; $15,000.00 for grant infrastructure and asset improvements; $80,000.00 for street repairs; $53,500.00 for Boulder Court Studies.

The FY 2021 balances

at $3,824,100.00 The budget consists of a General Fund Budget of $2,077,850; a Powell Bill Budget of $207,900.00; a Storm Water Budget of $27,000; and a Utility Fund Budget of $1,511,350. The Recommended Budget requires a $140,250 fund balance appropriation for the General Fund Budget, a $53,4000 fund balance appropriation for the Powell Bill Fund Budget, and a $93,350 fund balance for the Utility Fund Budget.

The allocation required from fund balance for the General Fund is an approximate 66% decrease from the prior fiscal year; for the Utility Fund, the fund balance allocation is approximately 21% less than the prior fiscal year; and an approximate 2.4% decrease from the prior fiscal year for the Powell Bill Fund.

Gaston County breaks ground on new corporate center Gaston County leaders celebrated the groundbreaking last week of the Apple Creek Corporate Center, which marks the County’s continued investment in creating high-paying jobs for its residents.

The County began work on Apple Creek, which sits near the City of Gastonia, in 2014, as part of the PublicPrivate Site Development

Initiative. Over the next five years, 15 different parcels of land were acquired to make this project a reality. All told, the County is investing $29 million in the project, between land acquisition, construction and engineering, according to Economic Development Commission Executive Director Donny Hicks.

NC to continue working toward getting students back in the classroom Governor Roy Cooper announced last week that North Carolina will continue working with schools, teachers, parents, and health experts to ensure that plans for school this coming year will protect everybody, especially those at high-risk.

“We want to get our students back in the classroom, and we want to make sure we get this right. My number one opening priority is classroom doors,” said Governor Roy Cooper. “We encourage our public schools to continue planning, with a special focus on how teachers, staff, and students can best be protected – especially those who are high-risk.”

In June, the state released the Strong Schools NC Public Health Toolkit laying out essential health practices for schools to re-open safely. Schools were asked

to prepare three plans: Plan A – in-person learning with key health and safety rules in place. Plan B – same as Plan A, but with fewer children in the classroom at one time.

And Plan C – remote learning for all students.

With the goal of getting students back in the classroom for in-person learning this school year, planning continues to ensure teachers, staff and students will have adequate protection.

“We need to do everything within our collective power so that our children can return to in-person instruction,” said NCDHHS Secretary Dr. Mandy Cohen.

“We can do that with the scientifically proven protective measures in the StrongSchoolsNC guidance and all of us practicing the 3Ws.” Last week, the state distributed supplies of personal

protective equipment to schools across the state for use in the upcoming school year to keep students safe and healthy while at school.

These PPE Starter Packs include a two-month supply of thermometers, surgical masks, face shields & gowns to school systems and charter schools, for school nurses and delegated staff who provide health care to students for the 2020-2021 school year.

In total, the shipments include more than 16,500 thermometers, 7,200 face shields, 81,000 gowns and more than 347,000 surgical masks.

Shipments to 203 charter schools, lab schools, and regional schools will travel via UPS. Supplies for the 116 public school districts will ship either via UPS or directly to the school district warehouse by North Carolina

This year, growers are taking special precautions in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. Roadside stands have required employees to wear protective gear such as masks and gloves. In addition, many growers have installed protective plastic shields at their registers to protect consumers.

Remembering the Great Flood of 1916

Next Thursday, July 16 will mark the 104st anniversary of the Great Flood of 1916- the worst natural catastrophe in the history of Belmont and Mount Holly.

On July 10, 1916, two category four hurricanes merged in the Blue Ridge Mountains and combined to produce torrential downpours that broke all previous 24-hour rainfall records. Rain hit the Charlotte area Monday afternoon and continued to fall virtually without ceasing at a rate of one inch per hour onto dry soil, conditions which assured that by Sunday the Catawba had swelled 22 feet and was rising an average of one foot an hour. Panicked rumors began to buzz among the locals that bridges were collapsing and by the afternoon of Sunday the July16th, they proved true.

Flooding happened violently and abruptly, submerging entire neighborhoods and tearing down every railroad and highway bridge crossing the Catawba and South Fork rivers. A bend in the northeastern section of the Catawba spilled over with such force that it ripped open the earth, revealing the skeletons, earthenware pots, and weaponry of a Native American burial ground.

Homes along the riverside were swept away, and many small towns and villages in the region were left without access to electricity, running post, or much needed supplies. The streets of the Harden community were swirling with torrential rivers that evoked images of Venetian canals, and the filthy waters that had flooded Harden’s Mills were nine and

Photo by Alan Hodge a half feet deep. Charlotte’s formidable Mountain Island Manufacturing Company was ripped to shreds, with damage to the company totaling over $350,000 dollars.

Even more expenses were accrued in lost merchandise when 1,000 cotton bales were swept out of storage and into the flood. Local boys risked their lives in the torrential downpour when the company offered a small reward for each safely returned bale.

The most remarkable tragedy of this flood however, was the Catawba River railroad trestle catastrophe, in which 19 rail workers attempting to fortify the structure with cables and timbers were swept into the flood rapids when the trestle collapsed underneath them.

Historians Robert F. Cope and Manly Wade Wellman claim that “for a moment [the trestle] seemed to sail like a raft; then it broke to pieces.

Agonized watchers saw the workmen gulped down by the great foamy deluge”.

The drowning men clung to floating debris to keep from going under, and in a stirring act of courage, two

African American men navigated a rowboat through the floodwaters and saved six of the 19 workmen.

Peter Stowe, an elderly gentleman and former slave, and Fons Ross, a neighbor of Stowe’s who worked flipping signs at railroad crossings, prepared for the endeavor by making use of a uniquely designed flat bottomed boat, and praying on their knees before setting out. Upon return, the heroic pair were commended by the city and awarded $500 by the Charlotte Observer for their lifesaving efforts.

Despite the immense damage done to property and people’s lives during the flood, effective rebuilding strategies and an attitude of resilience ensured that Belmont’s five mills were quickly reopened and ready to fill war orders the following year. In addition, the Duke Power company began planning their dam system and reservoirs such as Mt. Island Lake with flood control in mind flood control in mind, ensuring that the flood of July, 1916 was never to be relived.

When I was in school, I remember when the teacher would have the class pick teams for the game we were going to play. In a short time, you would have the class forming sides, while some were included and some shunned.

A united class was now divided. Our nation, like that class, is divided now. Politics and pandemic have sharply divided our nation, families, and even churches. We just celebrated July the Fourth as one nation under God, yet we are far from being one, too often.

In Ephesians 4:1-16, the Apostle Paul wrote to the churches about this very notion, being one. Paul was one of the greatest missionaries and church planters of all time.

However, apart from spreading the gospel, Paul spent most of his time attempting to heal divisions within the churches he ministered to. Whether it was the Corinthian, Roman, or Ephesian church, Paul was confronting doctrinal, personal, as well as sin issues. As Paul wrote his letter to the Ephesians, he wanted them to understand that they were one body, one faith, and one baptism in God. Jesus was the head, and they were the body, all with spiritual gifts from God for the spreading of the gospel.

One thing we can count on in our nation, churches, and families, is that there are times when we will disagree. Disagreement is normal from time to time. Rev. We can do so much as one. At our beginning as a nation we defeated the world’s greatest power at the time working together, rich and poor, from all walks of life. As churches, gathered together in the name of Jesus, we can do so much with Jesus in our midst together. Together we learn new perspectives, and even find respect with those we may see differently from.

Today our politics, and even the Coronavirus pandemic has pulled people apart. Such division in our families and churches allow Satan to break us apart. Paul told the church in Ephesians 4:3, that they were “endeavoring to keep the Spirit in the bond of peace” (NKJV). May we endeavor to do the same today. May we truly be one nation under God. Even in disagreements, we can be one faith, and one body, with Jesus as our Lord.
