I ruined a perfectly good pair of jeans and I’m glad I did... Part 2

Recently Sharon and I took a trip to Central America. Well, sort of.

Actually we visited a very large and very popular local flea market and from what I could see most of the vendors were from that region of the globe.

It was an eye opening experience.

One portion of the market sold exotic fruits and vegetables. One fruit looked like a hand grenade. Hot peppers of every size and color were available to scorch the goozle of partakers. One man had a stack of coconuts and when somebody would buy one he would take a huge machete and chop a hole in it and insert a straw. Another vendor had humongous bags of fried pork skins. Another had a big chunk of meat on a stick and he was slicing wads off with a butcher knife and putting the mystery flesh in tortillas for customers who squirted red hot sauce on the whole affair and wolfed it down.

There were booths selling cowboy boots from Mexico. These brightly colored clodhoppers had toes so narrow they looked like the could pierce 1/2” exterior plywood given enough hombre leg power. The boot toes also pointed upward at a sharp angle like the prow of a Viking ship. One booth was offering huarache sandals like Ricky Ricardo used to wear. I’m going to go back there in a couple of weeks and buy a pair. Other vendors offered huge straw hats to keep the broiling sun at bay. Other folks were selling pinatas and tennis shoes by the stack.

Need a chicken? Those were for sale as well. I asked the guy selling them what folks did with them and he smiled and said “eat”.

Another place had some parakeets. I always had a parakeet when I was kid but that was then and this is now so no parakeet came home with me.

All the while we were strolling the stalls, it dawned on me that English was the second language amongst the vast majority of the flea marketeers and their customers. The folks were talking a mile a minute but damned if

In a previous article, I shared how I ruined a perfectly good pair of jeans, loading red mulch into my car and then carrying it from the car to the yard. If that wasn’t enough, I found myself kneeling in red mulch water after I dumped it onto the ground. The blue jeans became red jeans.

A few weeks later, after finishing my workout at the Y, I was getting my clothes out of the locker. When I pulled them out, there were my “red jeans”. How could I wear them when I had three important meetings that day? There wasn’t enough time to go home and switch pants. I had no choice but to wear them.

My first meeting was with the staff of our Dove’s Nest women addiction recovery program. I explained the jeans represented what they addressed every day, and that is familiarity. I had been wearing those jeans so often that I went to the section of my closet that was familiar. I kept my nice jeans on the right side of the closet and the red jeans on the left side. I went to where I had gone so many weekends. I reminded the counselors that the women they serve who struggle with addiction continue to return to what was familiar. They go back to old play grounds and play-mates because they are familiar. They return to abusive boyfriends because it is familiar. These relationships may be sick, crazy and abusive, but they are familiar. In addition, they are also comfortable, even though they are unhealthy. The challenge the staff faces is to help our residents move from an unhealthy familiar to risk stepping into unfamiliar healthy relationships; a place they have never been to before.

I didn’t recognize the jeans were the red ones because I always fold the red stain on the inside, so I don’t ruin other clothing in the closet. They looked like my blue jeans but deep inside, they were my red jeans.

After we got home from the market I pondered where all those Latino folks had come from, how they got here, where they live now, what they do for work, and what they plan on doing in the future.

I suddenly realized that the same situation took place over 200 years ago in our area. In 1773 my five times great grandfather John Smith and his wife Rosanna, and their kid David came from Ireland to what is now the South Point peninsula near South Point High School and settled on a land grant from King George. That area at the time was populated

by Catawba Indians. I can hear the Indians now- “Well, boys, there goes the neighborhood.”

The fact is, human beings can’t be still.

We have to wander. Maybe where certain groups wander and settle irks the folks that have already been on that spot for generations but that’s just the way it is.

Some folks might curse the flea market folks and wish they would go back where they came from, but that ain’t gonna happen. But maybe they aren’t such bad people after all. I felt safer at the market than in some areas of Charlotte I’ve been in.

I didn’t buy anything at the flea market this first trip, (gonna get me some huaraches next visit and maybe a taco of mystery meat) but I did bring home a better understanding of how folks everywhere just want to make a dollar and live what they think is a better life than the one they left south of the border or across an ocean.

When Moses sent the twelve spies to check out the Promised Land, they returned with a report that it exceeded their expectation. However, ten of them said it was a dangerous place because there were giants in the land. They wanted to go back to Egypt. They had been in bondage for 400 years. Abuse and beatings were familiar to them but going to an unknown place was scary. They preferred to go back to abuse because they knew how to survive there.

Healthy relationships were unfamiliar.

I shared this story two more times that day. It reminded me of the challenge we face when moving our residents from a life of insanity to all God has for them.

Intelligence more critical today than ever While we cannot ever dismiss Nuclear, Biological, Chemical and Cyber threats; the U.S. is currently in conflict with China over trade, North Korea keeps testing ballistic missiles, Iran continues warmongering, Syria, Sudan, Venezuela and the Mexican borders are humanitarian crises, Russia denies having tried to interfere with our democratic process and climate change presents challenges now and in the future to U.S. national security. I think most people would agree that the world today is, to put it simply, a catastrophe waiting to happen. With so much contention and instability how are we to know what is truth or deception. I would submit that our best mechanism to maintain our tactical and strategic advantage lies in good and proactive intelligence.

As a former U.S. Em-

bassy Security Chief I am compelled to take exception to President Trump’s past disparaging comments about our nation’s intelligence and its leaders.

As an erstwhile consumer of intelligence I know of numerous instances when intelligence, along with our security protocols, interdicted an assault upon an Embassy and kept American personnel safe. As the old adage goes; to be forewarned is to be forearmed.

However, no agency is perfect and occasionally we get it wrong. Most of us remember the 9/11 attacks and former CIA Director George Tenet’s “slam dunk” remarks at the UN regarding Iraq’s WMD. But make no mistake, our signals, electronic, geospatial, human and analytical capabilities are along with our friends the Israelis and British, the best in the world and usually

spot on. It is a formidable task requiring a great deal of expertise to accurately determine an adversaries’ intentions and capabilities.

When the President berates intelligence, it is a demoralizing affront to the men and women who choose to operate behind the scenes in anonymity to protect our nation both overseas and domestically.

The President’s one man show seems to be wearing thin when he says he knows “more than the generals” and “our intelligence people need to go back to school”. It is the epitome of egotism as well as penny wise and pound foolish to proclaim oneself an expert in all aspects of intelligence, military strategy and foreign policy.

Intelligence is not opinion or gut-feeling Mr. President but rather a carefully crafted product based on

analysis and threat assessment obtained by overt and particularly covert sources and methods. In the CIA Headquarters building there is a quote from John 8:32 in the Bible: “And Ye Shall Know The Truth and The Truth Shall Make You Free.” It would behoove the President and other pundits to remember that truth is more often found in objective reliable intelligence and not on Twitter or Snapchat.

Pump prices stabilizing in the Carolinas Gas price averages are down across the Carolinas however, many factors could push them back up in the coming days.

North Carolina’s $2.66 average is four cents less than last week, one cent less than a month ago and four cents less than this time last year.

South Carolina’s $2.49 average is four cents less than last week, three cents less than last month and eight cents less than this time last year.

Gas prices are decreasing despite the Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) latest reports which show an increase in demand to summer-like levels and a decrease in gasoline stocks. The move to cheaper gas prices indicates that demand and supply are potentially leveling out.

“Carolinians are enjoying a little relief at the pump today after months of increases but it is too early to

tell if this is a trend,” said Tiffany Wright, AAA Carolinas spokesperson. “There are several factors that could push up prices in the coming weeks, including weather, a major move in gasoline stock levels or a spike in demand.

The volume of Memorial Day weekend travel could also play a factor in whether pump prices will increase or remain stable in the near future.”

Connect the Dots: It’s all about Him

What do we center on?

Centenarians call it “travelling cedar.” That woodland plant really is called ground cedar and I have an abundance growing on my property. It grows low to the ground and is quite unique.

100 years ago and more, it was combined with holly and mistletoe to form Christmas Wreaths. Whenever I see it in our woods, I reflect on that use but this week I looked deeper.

That Christmas Wreath

was formed from low lying plants; from tree branches midway in the air and a plant living high in treetops. That physically embraces vertical depth; combine that with a wreath’s circle shape, which substantively has no beginning or end, and we have a metaphor for God. He has no beginning or end, is infinite in love, and has unending depth, wisdom and peace.

This week I didn’t feel peaceful. My desk was piled high with tax papers. I needed some peace. How does one get it? In Dante Alighieri’s 14th century epic poem, The Inferno, he notes when speaking about God, that “in His will is our peace.” So I needed to center on God’s will for the day and beyond.

Prayer was my obvious recourse not just because I know that God is my resource for everything but because we are in a constant spiritual battle and our adversary, the devil, loves to rip peace out of our lives and a constant focus on the Lord holds satanic attacks at bay.

Speaking of battles, peace, and prayers, Memorial Day is here. How often do we treat it casually; treat it as another day off from work?

How often do we take time to thank the men and women serving in our armed forces, police and fire departments; especially those who are currently in harm’s way while we are playing and eating? How often do we remember and express thanks for those who have sacrificed their lives so we can live in this country, read these pages in freedom, and have a day off; and not

just these service men and women; o u r founding f a t h e r s , Dennis Siracusa and foreign missionaries too? They all often serve with enormous sacrifice and many die; give up all of their tomorrows so we have the freedoms we often take for granted today.

What, outside our self-interests, do we really value and appreciate?

This Memorial Day, many who sacrificed their lives for us, will have circular wreaths placed on their graves. Those wreaths hopefully express our collective gratefulness toward them; an enduring gratefulness for those who have paid the ultimate price and for those currently in harm’s way; a gratefulness that incites us to “pay it forward.” Doesn’t it make sense to start with prayer? Read Mark 11:24, James 1:5 and James 5:16.

Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote, “More things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of.” Doesn’t that speak to the vital value of prayer and our need to make room for more of it? Let’s visualize God at the center of the wreaths we are placing on graves this memorial day and remember that He is the center of our universe and is reaching out to us all to invite Him into the center of our hearts. Romans 1:20, Colossians 1:17, and Romans 11:36. Let’s pray to Him a lot, and engage a very grateful heart.

Kubbs talks about events in America’s past as if he lived them.

“My class is not an easy grade,” he said. “I want to bring history alive. History has lots of interesting stories.

Kubbs’ contagious excitement and energy goes beyond the blackboard. He’s a highly successful coach at

South Point.

Kubbs led South Point basketball to its first-ever conference title and winningest two-year run in school history. He was also named co-Southwestern 2A Conference boys basketball coach of the year.

Laura Dixon of W.A. Bess Elementary School earned the Wells Fargo Principal of the Year recognition. A veteran educator with 32 years of experience, Dixon earned a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She

has been the principal at W.A. Bess for 10 years, and she previously served as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal at Grier Middle School.

Dan Barber of Gardner Park Elementary School received the Assistant Principal of the Year distinction Barber has 15 years of experience in education. To improve, Congress needs to look inward

By Lee H. Hamilton There are a lot of reasons why Congress finds itself hamstrung in Washington and discounted by the people it serves at home.

But in the end, the demons Congress has to fight are its own. If it is to return to relevance, effectiveness, and higher standing in public opinion, the paths it must follow start on and wind through Capitol Hill.

For starters, Congress has gotten into some terrible legislative habits. The worst is the omnibus bill, which is emblematic of the deeply rooted issues Congress faces. These bills are thousands of pages long and they bypass pretty much the entire legislative process.

Good process is not about efficiency. It’s about bolstering your chances of getting things right. And that means handing authority back to individual mem-

bers and to the committees so that what comes out of Congress can benefit from the creativity and insights of a wide range of talented politicians.

This step, however, requires another: Congress has to spend more time legislating. Its members work very hard, but not at legislating. Yet if the political and legislative process is a search for remedies to our nation’s problems, then it needs care and attention.

Building expertise and finding consensus — even within one’s own party — takes patience, skill, perseverance…and a lot of time.

And honestly, if members of Congress can’t make the time to re-energize the practice of negotiation and compromise, then what hope is there? The definition of being a responsible lawmaker is to deal with divisions and to move the country forward anyway.

Otherwise, each side just sits in its corner and maneuvers to beat the other at the next election and we, as a nation, spin in circles.

Finally, Congress needs to spend far more of its energy looking over the executive branch. The current hearings on the Mueller report highlight what’s been lacking: this kind of attention should be paid to every nook and cranny of government.

The point of all this is that without a functional Congress, we don’t have a functional representative democracy. I don’t expect all these things I’ve mentioned to be resolved easily or quickly. But I want to see Congress again become an institution we can be confident is playing a constructive role in our democracy.

And until it gets its house in order, I don’t see how that will happen.

Rebekka Powers, chief accountability officer, was named the Central Office Administrator of the Year.

Powers earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Mars Hill College and a master’s degree in executive leadership studies from Gardner-Webb University.

She has 14 years of experience in education. Powers previously taught at Southwest Middle School and John Chavis Middle School and served as an assistant principal at East Gaston High School. Before being named the chief accountability officer last year, she served as a data integration specialist.

As longtime sponsor of the recognition program, Wells Fargo presented to the Teacher of the Year and Principal of the Year a handcrafted Wells Fargo Bank Educator Apple and $1,250 to use for professional advancement. Each Principal of the Year and Teacher of the Year finalist received $250 to use for professional advancement.

The Evening of Excellence ceremony served as the kickoff for Teacher Appreciation Week in Gaston County Schools. The program pays tribute to the school system’s most outstanding teachers, administrators, and certified support staff for their exceptional leadership and many contributions. The award nominees, finalists, and re-

cipients are considered to be among the top public school employees in the state.

Superintendent of Schools W. Jeffrey Booker said, “The Evening of Excellence ceremony gives us an opportunity to bring attention to the extraordinary efforts of our teachers, administrators, and others, who go above and beyond expectations to inspire success and a lifetime of learning in our students. We congratulate the award recipients and applaud all educators in Gaston County Schools for what they do every day to help children.”

Carolina Thread Trail hosts a Party for Trails June 1 In honor of National Trails Day, the Carolina Thread Trail is holding a free, community festival on Goat Island in downtown Cramerton on Goat Island Park and Greenway, part of the Carolina Thread Trail on Saturday, June 1, 10 am-2 pm.

This free, family-friendly community day features outdoor activities, including guided nature walks, free kayak and SUP rentals for paddling on the South Fork Catawba River, bike rentals and greenway tours, yoga classes with Simply Wellness, lawn games and nature activities, as well as outdoor lifestyle exhibitors and a disc

golf course.

Guests are welcome and encouraged to bring their dogs. There is a dog park on the island.

Three guided nature history walks will take place at 10:30 am, 11:30 am and 1:15 pm, two guided bike tours at 10:15 am and 12:45 pm, yoga at 10:30 am and 11:30 am, and free kayak and SUP rentals and bike rentals will be available on a first come, first served basis. Guests are welcome to bring their own kayaks, SUPs or canoes. No motorized boats are allowed.

Doris Benfield STANLEY- Doris Davis Benfield, age 76, of Stanley, North Carolina was called home to be with her Lord at 6:13 a.m. on Saturday, May 11, 2019, in Dallas. Born September 17, 1942, in Kings Mountain, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Everette and Elizabeth Davis. She was a high school graduate and, on September 16, 1961, Doris married the love of her life, Vinson Benfield. From that point on, she spent her days as a devoted wife, loving mother, and caring grandmother.

From her birth to her death, she nourished the people around her with love, faith, and delicious home cooking. In addition to being a homemaker, she also served for many years in the kitchen at Catawba Heights Baptist Church Daycare and Gaston Christian School.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 57 years, Vinson Benfield, children Jim Benfield (and wife Julia), Karen Cauthen, and David Benfield (and wife Shellie), 6 grandchildren, Travis Benfield (and wife Heather), Meghan Benfield, Nathan Benfield (and wife Regina), Katie Cauthen, Josh Benfield, and Cody Cauthen, and 2 great-grandchildren, John Paul and Claire Benfield.

She is also survived by her brother, Bobby Davis (and wife Rachel). She was preceded in death by her sister, Betty Davis Conrad (and husband Leon Conrad).

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at 3:00 p.m. at Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Gastonia, N.C. Burial followed at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery in Mount Holly, N.C. The family greeted friends at Hickory Grove Baptist Church on Wednesday from 1:30 p.m. until the start of the service. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and was a member of Shady Brook Baptist Church, Charlotte.

A loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Mr. Hovis is survived by his wife of 63 years, Doris Jane Keever Hovis; his children, Michael Ernest Hovis (Tina), Timothy Alan Hovis and Jonathan Eric Hovis (Cathy); his siblings, J.P. Hovis (Faye), Joann Norton (Wayne), Hilda Roberts, Gayle Reedy (Joel) and Jack Hovis (Starr); his grandchildren, Jennifer Snyder (Michael), Steven Palumbo (Katie), Megan Mitchell (Adam), Abbie Hovis, Erin Fitzhenry (William), Daniel Hovis (Erica), Rachel Finley (Tyler), Carey Bradley (Ben) and Luke Hovis; and eleven great-grandchildren.

Several days ago I reached the end of the day wondering why I was slightly faint.

I suddenly realized it happened again.

There are days my schedule is so full due to an unexpected crisis that can occur. I don’t have time to eat. I am saddened to say it happens more often than it should.

I run from crisis to crisis putting out fires that others lit.

I am often asked, “How do you care for yourself with your schedule?” My goal is to live from the overflow and not from depleted resources. It is like the inhale and exhale of our breath. If we are always inhaling without exhaling, we will not survive. When we inhale we breathe in oxygen. When we exhale we breathe out carbon dioxide. I call this one of God’s great rhythm of life.

If you notice there is rhythm all around us. We breathe in and out. We see the night and day. There is a change of seasons.

Even animals know how to work and rest.

But, when it comes to humans, we do not know how to live by the rhythm that was created within and around us. We work and work and work without the re-creation side of rest, renew and restore.

So, how do we begin to live in the rhythm of our life? Some days catch me off guard and cause my rhythm to derail.

But, I always try to go back to my rhythm.

It started when I discerned what gets me up in the morning. I discerned my mission and gifts that God placed in me. My mission is to come alongside others to help them discover their why, what gets them up in the morning. To bring out the best in them that they too may live into their divine mission in life.

There will be times people will try to place in you a position that does not line up with your mission. It may be something you are not gifted or called. It can become draining and will deplete you of excess energy and focus. Always remember your mission.

Be careful about allowing others to draw you into their anxiety. I often tell others I will not allow you to draw me into your stress and anxiety, but I do invite you into my peace. I am an introvert with a gift of discernment. When I am around extroverts, I strongly feel their mood at the moment their excitement, frustrations, or anxiousness. Their very presence exudes

Much of our anxiety develops due to poor choices.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” James 1:5 ESV. My prayer each morning is God let me be a great demonstration of your love in the world today. I also add to the prayer, “God I will be faced with many choices today.

Guide my decisions that I may make godly choices that will honor you.” Yes, there are times I struggle with the flesh and want to make choices according to my emotions.

But, I strive to listen to the Spirit of God as he moves me into the right decisions.

There are many ways to begin your life in balance. Remember what scripture teaches us; there is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven. Discover what works for you. Your appointed times will look different from others, but it is your rhythm of life. Know your mission; remember to breathe, make wise decisions. Pace yourself and allow your rhythm to flow naturally.

2019 Juneteenth – A weekend celebration

will begin in Bessemer City with their inaugural Juneteenth festival on Friday, June 14th, 5 PM – 8 PM in downtown Centennial Park.

This event will feature live entertainment, history lessons, food trucks, fun activities such as an obstacle course and bounce house for children, and much, much more!

Elements of Empowerment, Inc. will be present at the Bessemer City event and

Bessemer City will be present at the Belmont event. Both parties are excited about supporting each other and modeling collaboration. Everyone is fully encouraged to attend both events. Admission is free for both events.

Thirty five sites are featured on the app ranging from the railroad tracks on Main Street to the Belmont Community Garden.

The app was created by a collaboration between the City of Belmont, the Main Street Advisory Board, and the Downtown Belmont Development Association.

The DBDA provided the financial support to have the audio interviews professionally mixed with sound effects and music.

Main Street Design Committee member Angela Street talked about the app.

“Our committee worked over one year on develop-

ing this app getting it up and running,” she said. “We are extremely excited to have this walking history tour available to the public to highlight Belmont’s rich history. With the app you can be transported back in time.”

Other folks on the committee included former educator Mark Fisher and current city council member Ron Foulk.

Street explained how easy it is to access the free app.

“Go to the app store on your phone or tablet and type in “Belmont Go” then press search and the app comes up,” she said. “Press get and once it downloads it will be on the screen. To use it just press the icon. It will open up and History Walk will be the first offering.”

In the future, the City of Belmont will maintain the app and the plan is to expand its scope.

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, specifically the June 19, 1865 announcement in Galveston, Texas.

YMCA tops giving goal The Gaston County Family YMCA concluded its 2019 Annual Giving Campaign on May 9, surpassing its goal of $380,000.

Volunteers, staff and board members assembled for the victory celebration to honor volunteers’ fundraising efforts at the Carstarphen Family Boathouse at the Warlick Family YMCA Thursday evening.

Sharon Padgett, CEO, told the assembled YMCA patrons that today’s success began a year ago when work began to redefined the programs and initiatives that the YMCA supports through donated dollars.

“It really helped having an excited group of campaigners, especially the first-year volunteers, go out and make this happen,” Padgett said.

“The energy and passion this team brought to the campaign is the reason we are celebrating tonight.”

The success of the campaign also was due, Padgett said, to the generosity of Gaston County.

“We are extremely thankful for the generosity of our members and community

partners,” she said, “who share our commitment to strengthening the foundation of our community.”

Each of our four YMCA locations had a volunteer chair that lead the effort including Frank Morehead (Cherryville), Rochelle Skarpalezos (Pharr), Haley Stutzman and Tom Bocchino (Stowe), and Christa Heilig (Warlick).

During the celebration, the YMCA recognized fundraisers. More than 100 volunteers assisted in the fundraising campaign. All funds raised in the annual campaign go to programs and initiatives that help kids and families in need access YMCA programs such as after school, aquatics, Gymnastics/Dance, LiveSTRONG at the YMCA, Summer Lunch Program, Senior programs, summer day camp, teen leadership initiatives, and Resource Connection Gateway.

“It takes a village of amazingly committed people who give their best to our YMCA community,” said Sharon Ryerson, Stowe Family YMCA volunteer.

The Gaston County Family YMCA is still accepting donations for its campaign.

Morris is Newberry College grad Tori Ashlen Morris of Belmont, NC graduated from Newberry College and was part of spring commencement ceremony, celebrating the accomplishment of 139 graduates on Saturday, May 4, on the Newberry campus.

When we think of faith and trust in God, perhaps no greater example can be found, than that of mothers. This past Sunday we celebrated Mother’s Day. We honored our moms for everything they are, and for everything they mean to us. Mothers embody the very ideals of love and faith. We see the love God has for us expressed in a mother’s love.

1 Samuel 1:8-20 tells of one of the great mothers in the Bible, Hannah. Hannah was a godly woman who had one desire, to have a child. She could not have children, and she desperately wanted a son. Each year Hannah and her husband would go to the city of Shiloh, where the Tabernacle of God was. While there on one of their yearly trips to worship, Hannah took the opportunity to pray. She poured her heart out to God. She did not speak, she simply prayed from the anguish of her heart. Eli the high priest confronted her while she prayed, and she told him that she was praying for God to hear her petition. He sent her away, reminding her that God would hear and answer. In the process of time, God blessed Hannah with a son, Samuel. She had made a promise to God that if He gave her a son, she would give that son back to God.

When Samuel was young, Hannah kept her promise and took Samuel to Eli, dedicating him to God’s service. Samuel became a powerful prophet of God. Rev. Trent Tankin Hannah exemplifies the faith of a mother.

Mothers are patient, waiting on God to work His will in the lives of their families and children. Hannah waited on God to answer her prayer, and He did. Mothers, like Hannah, have a never-ending love for God, and their families. A mother’s love never gives up on God, even if He seems to take too long to answer. Mothers never give up on their children, even if that child rebels, and drifts far away from God. Mothers sacrifice, and give their best for their children. Hannah would return to Shiloh each year, taking a little robe she had knitted for Samuel. She loved God, loved her son, and lived for both every day.

Mothers are some of the greatest gifts God has given us. They never give up on us, and their faith is powerful. We are what we are because of our mothers. I am grateful for my mother, because she led me to Jesus. I am eternally grateful for her. Take a moment this week to let your mother know just how special she is to you. She has given her best for you. Take a moment to thank God for her.

CAMP From Page 1 or other procedures in their first year of life. Camp LUCK provides programs and services to children (and their families) with CHD. Everything is free of charge.

Camp LUCK began when the passions of four people merged. Jay “Bird” Thompson and René Herlong had a vision of creating a summer camp for children with significant heart disease. They pitched this idea to a meeting of the family support group, Levine Cardiac Kids. At that meeting, they learned that they had two very enthusiastic partners in Kim Jackson and her son, Jacob. Jacob had been to a similar camp in California, and he and his mother were eager to provide local kids with a similar opportunity. This melding of passions was the spark that ignited others to join in on the effort, and Camp LUCK was born.

Family Camp was an introduction to the idea of a future Kids Camp for the families in Levine Cardiac Kids, and it was a resounding success. After the first Family Camp, a Board of Directors was formed and the hard work of creating a Kids Camp began . Several months after the first Family Camp, Jacob Jackson died after his last of many surgeries for his heart defect. The Camp LUCK community was devastated, but knew how much Jacob wanted to have a Kids Camp for his friends with heart problems.

“When my son Jacob didn’t survive his last sur-

gery I was not sure what I would do,” Kim Jackson said. “I quickly decided the best thing I could do for myself was to stay involved with Camp LUCK and honor Jacob’s memory. That is what he would want me to do. Camp LUCK is Jacob’s legacy. Camp LUCK is my ‘heart family’. My wish is for surviving children with heart disease to have the best life possible. Being born with a broken heart does not make you a broken person!”

Camp Luck has had an annual family camp since 2010.

The inaugural Kids Camp was held in 2012 and continues to grow each year.

“Jacob has been with us every step of the way,” Jackson said. “His initials are on our logo, and his memory is forever in our hearts. We believe that there is no finer legacy than Camp LUCK. We have brought joy to many kids and their families, and we’ve only just begun! Come join in on the fun!”

Camp LUCK Kids Camp is a medically supervised resident camp for kids with heart disease and one sibling. It is located at Camp Cherokee, which is nestled in 7,000 beautiful acres at Kings Mountain State Park.

The goal at Camp LUCK is to provide a positive experience that helps everyone reach their potential by building self-esteem, friendships and character in a safe environment and “heart kids” to be “normal kids” for a week and participate in awesome activities that they might not normally be able to. One sibling has the opportunity to get this incredible experience as well.

Campers enjoy a wide variety of traditional and adventure programs such as swimming, hiking, athletics, canoeing, archery, dancing, rock climbing and much more. Camp LUCK helps campers to appreciate the diversity of all people and become a part of a global community. Cabin life also plays an important role in teaching campers to be selfreliant, cooperate with others and learn to make decisions while they are away from home.

Camp LUCK does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status.

How do I know if my child is eligible for Camp LUCK? All campers, “heart kids” as well as siblings, must be 7-14 years of age at the time of camp. “Heart kids” are eligible if they have had open heart surgery at Levine Children’s Hospital. If they have not had open heart surgery at Levine Children’s Hospital, “heart kids” are eligible if they are patients of either Sanger Heart and Vascular Institute, Novant Health Heart & Vascular Institute or Asheville Cardiology Associates and meet one of these criteria: Have had open heart surgery at another institution or have significant structural or functional heart disease, as defined by the “heart kid’s” pediatric cardiologist or have significant arrhythmic heart disease, as defined by the “heart kid’s” pediatric cardiologist or have other heart disease which the

pediatric cardiologist feels causes a significant impact on the child’s life. The definition of a sibling is someone with whom the heart kid lives a significant portion of the time. Camp LUCK does not have the facilities or the staff to care for children with developmental disabilities or with physical disabilities unrelated to their hearts. Gaston County Neighborhood Revitalization Program Gaston County will take applications from owneroccupants for housing repair assistance under the County’s proposed 2019 Community Development Block Grant—Neighborhood Revitalization Program. The application period continues through May 29th, 2019.

The assistance will be in the form of a zero percent diminishing loan, which may be used to rehabilitate single family, detached, substandard site-built homes to meet the required standards set by HUD and the Minimum Housing Code. Mobile homes and multi-family dwellings are not eligible. This is NOT a home purchase program.

Measles information for Gaston County residents There are currently several measles outbreaks in various states across the nation. The Gaston County Department of Health & Human Services (Gaston DHHS) is working closely with state officials, CaroMont Health, and other local healthcare providers to prepare for any potential local cases of measles. No cases of measles have been reported in North Carolina during 2019, and there have been no documented cases in Gaston County since 1979.

However, many states including Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee have reported recent cases of measles to the CDC; up-to-date information about cases and outbreaks can be found here: https:// www.cdc.gov/measles/casesoutbreaks.html.

“Communication and collaboration are key elements to addressing any communicable disease risk, and we believe we are wellpositioned in our county to handle this potential threat,” said Dr. Velma Taormina, Medical Director of Gaston DHHS. “We have strong local vaccination rates and close relationships with local healthcare providers like CaroMont Health and Gaston Family Health Services, so should we have a case, we can work together quickly to minimize risk to the public.”

What are the symptoms of measles?

Measles typically begins with a high fever, cough, runny nose and red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis). Three to five days after symptoms begin, a rash breaks out. It usually begins as flat red spots that appear on the face at the hairline and spread downward to the neck, trunk, arms, legs, and feet. Small raised bumps may also appear on top of the flat red spots.

How is measles spread?

Measles is a highly contagious virus that lives in the nose and throat mucus of an infected person. It can spread to others through coughing and sneezing. Also, measles virus can live for up to two hours in an airspace where the infected person coughed or sneezed. If other people breathe the contaminated air or touch the infected surface, then touch their eyes, noses, or mouths, they can become infected. Measles is so contagious that if one person has it, up to 90% of the people close to that person who are not immune will also become infected How can someone find out if they are protected/ vaccinated?

How can someone get immunized if they aren’t already?

You can go to your primary care doctor or make an appointment at DHHS by

calling 704-853-5003.

If someone has been vaccinated are they at risk?

The measles vaccine is very effective. One dose of measles vaccine is about 93% effective at preventing measles if exposed to the virus. Two doses are about 97% effective. Very few people who get two doses of measles vaccine will still get measles if exposed to the virus. Fully vaccinated people who get measles are much more likely to have a milder illness and less likely to pass it to others. Gaston County has good vaccination rates; when areas have good vaccination rates, they are much less likely to see outbreaks like those going on in New York and California.

What should someone do if they think they are at risk?

If you have been exposed to someone who has measles, immediately call your doctor and let them know. Your doctor can evaluate you and determine if you are immune based on your vaccination record, age and laboratory tests.

If you are concerned that you have measles, immediately call your doctor and let them know about your symptoms so that they can tell you what to do next. Your doctor can make special arrangements to evaluate you, if needed, without putting other patients and medical office staff at risk.

Gastonia native trains information warriors to defend America

A 1978 Hunter Huss High School graduate and Gastonia, North Carolina, native is working with a command responsible for teaching future information warriors the skills required to defend America around the world.

David Hall works as an instructor and serves with the Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) Virginia Beach.

A Navy instructor at IWTC is responsible for teaching strike and imagery warfare.

Hall credits success with the Navy with lessons learned growing up in Gastonia.

“I had a teacher in high school who taught me that if you are always late, start early,” said Hall. “I was an Eagle Scout where I learned all the knots I would need to know when I served in the Navy. I have had so many mentors in my life. My dad has been one of the biggest influences, as well as my mother. The faith they instilled in me taught me a lot.”

IWTC Virginia Beach provides a continuum of information warfare training to Navy and joint service personnel, preparing them to conduct information warfare across the full spectrum of military operations.

The training command currently offers 65 courses of instruction in information technology, cryptology and intelligence with an instructor and support staff of 280 military, civilian and contract members who train more than 6,500 students every year at five different training sites.

“I studied public speaking in college,” said Hall. “I have always been able to talk and now I have more to talk about. I served in the Navy for 20 years and have had 16 years of civilian service.”

Hall is playing an important part in America’s focus on rebuilding readiness, strengthening alliances and reforming business practices in support of the National Defense Strategy.

David Hall “Our priorities center on people, capabilities and processes, and will be achieved by our focus on speed, value, results and partnerships,” said Secretary of the Navy Richard V. Spencer. “Readiness, lethality and modernization are the requirements driving these priorities.”

IWTC Virginia Beach is one of four schoolhouses for the Center for Information Warfare Training (CIWT) and also oversees learning sites at Jacksonville and Mayport, Florida; Kings Bay, Georgia; and Groton, Connecticut to continue aligning the information warfare community training.

Charged with developing the future technical cadre of the information warfare community, the CIWT domain leads, manages and delivers Navy and joint force training to 22,000 students annually. With 1,200 military, civilian and contracted staff members, CIWT oversees about 200 courses at four information warfare training commands, two detachments and additional learning sites located throughout the United States and Japan.

CIWT is responsible for training enlisted cryptologic technicians, information systems technicians, intelligence specialists and electronics technicians. CIWT also provides training to cryptologic warfare, information professional, intelligence and foreign area officers, which prepares sailors to wage battle and assure the nation’s success in this burgeoning

warfare arena.

“The CIWT team is successful because each of our domain members is committed to our job of preparing sailors to fight and win in the arena of information warfare,” said Capt. Nick Andrews, CIWT’s commanding officer. “I’m extremely proud of how their hard work and professionalism prepare our sailors so they are ready for the Navy the nation needs.”

Serving in the Navy is a continuing tradition of military service for Hall, who has military ties with family members who have previously served. Hall is honored to carry on that family tradition.

“My dad was in the Army as well as my uncle,” said Hall. “My dad would always refer to the military commercials and told me that’s what I should do. I was 24 when I joined and just thought it was the greatest thing ever.”

As a member of one of the U.S. Navy’s most relied upon assets, Hall and other members know they are part of a legacy that will last beyond their lifetimes providing the Navy the nation needs.

“Serving in and for the Navy is an honor,” added Hall. “I am about as American as you get. What makes me above average is that I have served my country. My kids appreciate it and my wife thinks it is great. I think everyone should do it because it teaches you so much.”

Motorcycle safety is a two way street Motorcyclists are nearly five times more likely to be injured and 29 times more likely to be killed in a crash than vehicle motorists. May is National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month and AAA Carolinas is urging motorists and riders to do their part to make roads safer.

“We have to remember that motorcyclists are very vulnerable and those of us

who prefer four-wheeled vehicles have a major responsibility to keep riders safe,” said Tiffany Wright AAA Carolinas spokesperson.

“As warmer temperatures bring out more riders, motorists have to be extra vigilant and motorcyclists must ride responsibly and take precautions such as wearing bright colors and using headlights day and night to help keep

everyone safe.”

Last year in North Carolina, there were 165 fatalities related to motorcycle crashes, up 21% from 2017’s 136.

They’re happy, outgoing and loving — characteristics more than balanced out by their hound nature, which is inquisitive, determined, and focused on food. They aren’t yappy dogs, but they do have three distinct vocalizations — a bark/growl, a baying howl, and a half-baying howl (a cross between a frantic bark and a bay). The half-howl vocalization usually is reserved for when they catch sight of quarry. Being pack dogs, they generally get along well with other animals and their human friends — and they think everyone is their new best friend.

The most important thing to know about these Hounds is that they are a scent hound.

The nose is the most important part of his anatomy and his head is always down to the ground, searching for an interesting trail to follow. Once on a scent, they can roam miles before they stop. They use their nose to sniff out many things … especially food! Hounds need lots of room to get their exercise so a fenced yard is a must. If left alone and unexercised, Hounds can become destructive.

The Stuart Cramer Storm softball team had a rough time when they traveled to Taylorsville last week for a first-round playoff game against the Alexander County High Lady Cougars.

To put it bluntly, this game just did not go Cramer’s way.

Alexander County played hard while Cramer had a hard time getting on track. The results were a season-ending 11-1 loss.

Right from the first pitch, Alexander County came out strong, while Cramer struggled.

“We came out flat to start out,” head coach Matt Scholz said. “We really didn’t start playing our game until the fourth inning. By then we were already down by 10.”

The Storm struggled all the way around. Poor batting and mistakes cost Cramer.

Offensively the Lady Cougars were on fire. The Alexander County bats belted out 13 hits to Cramer’s two.

Defensively, the Storm just couldn’t pull it together.

“The first three innings were rough for us all around,” Scholz added. “Six errors in the field didn’t help our

cause. You can’t start off slow or play sloppy in the playoffs and expect to be successful.”

The loss was tough, but it did not eclipse what had been a fantastic run for Cramer.

This year’s team was by far the most successful softball team Cramer ever put in the field. The Storm finished 16-9 overall, 9-5 in conference play, and even won a tournament.

“Overall it was a successful season,” coach Scholz said. “Winning the Spring Break Tournament was the highlight of our season.”

As any coach will, Scholz wishes that the team could have done a little bit more.

But Scholz is very happy with what the team actually accomplished.

Cramer had a great year and made the playoffs for the sixth year in a row.

“As a coach, you always believe you could have won one or two more games,” Scholz added. “But going 16-9 was a good year for our program. We also kept our streak of making the state playoffs. We realize we need to take advantage of the opportunity of making the playoffs and play better.”

Cramer should be pretty

good next year. However, they will be losing some bigtime talent to graduation.

“We will miss the seniors Carley Womack, Jayda Watkins, and Gracie Wright,” Scholz said. “They were the

winningest group we have had in program history.”

The 2019 season may be over, but if you look back at what Cramer accomplished this year these ladies have a lot to be very proud of.

The Stanley Middle School baseball team took the county championship crown last week. The Blue Devils defeated Chavis by a score of 8-7.

South Point’s turn around season ends with 5-1 loss to West Lincoln

The South Point Red Raiders baseball season ended last week with a 5-1 loss to West Lincoln.

No loss is easy to take, but the real story here isn’t the fact that South Point fell in the first round.

As far as the loss goes, the Rebels didn’t exactly overpower the Red Raiders.

The West Lincoln batters generated six hits compared to the four generated by South Point.

The Rebels did play a mistake-free game while the Red Raiders committed two errors.

In the end, West Lincoln just did a good job managing base runners and took advantage of the opportunities they had.

South Point ended the 2019 season at 13-11.

That’s not bad when you consider the fact that going into April the Red Raiders were 3-7.

Most teams with a 3-7 March record are already looking at “next year.”

When a team is struggling it’s not uncommon for players to lose interest and start to abandon ship.

However, that didn’t happen at South Point.

After losing three games in a row in late March, the Red Raiders dug down deep and decided they were going to make a change.

Led by seniors, Beau Adams, Nolan Cochran, Alex Pinewood Elementary School fifth graders recently released their trout into a stream at South Mountain. They raised these fish Coffey Preston Connor and from eggs and managed their aquatic ecosystem in the classroom. It was a great learning experience for them.

In April the Red Raiders won nine of their 12 games.

That late-season push put them into the playoffs.

“We were off to a slow start,” head coach Jason Lineberger said. “Thankfully they kept fighting and got better.”

Lineberger admits that the Red Raiders fell short in the playoffs, but still sees a silver lining.

“We didn’t play well in the playoff game,” Lineberger added. “But I’m proud that they turned the season around.”

In reviewing the season coach Lineberger is reluctant to identify any one player he believes stood out. He believes that the Red Raiders played team ball.

When South Point played poorly they did so as a team, when they were winning they did so as a team.

One group of players that coach Lineberger did want to credit was his seniors.

Coach Lineberger believes that the seniors provided the team with excellent leadership, especially in the second half of the season.

“The seniors, in general, did a great job of leading us when things weren’t going our way,” Lineberger went on to say.

Losing five players that all contributed will be tough.

However, over the years South Point has done a good job of bringing people up.

This group as a lot to be proud of. They took a whopping early in the season and instead of going down they fought back. In anyone’s book that makes for a successful season.

Abbey Men’s Lacrosse ranked #5 The Belmont Abbey Men’s Lacrosse team has been ranked #5 in the nation in this week’s USILA/Coaches Poll, up one spot from last week’s ranking, the organization has announced.

The Crusaders played against nationally #1-ranked Limestone in the Conference Carolinas Championship game. The Saints won the contest 13-9. James Booth scored a goal and handed out three assists in the contest.

Belmont Abbey Men’s Cycling finishes 3rd Belmont Abbey’s men’s cycling team wrapped up a successful weekend at the USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championship with a third-place finish among Division II schools.

The races were held at Fort Gordon. Top Results- Lance Abshire took fifth place in the varsity criterium with a time of 1:18.29. Trey Hedgecock was 28th overall (ninth in category 2) in 1:20.13, while John Kuhfahl was 32nd in the same time. Nat Worcester placed 39th (1:22.41).

In Saturday’s road race, Kuhfahl led the team with a time of 2:15.17 (21st). Hedgecock was 45th, while Abshire placed 66th. The Crusaders finished ninth in the team time trial.

Mt. Holly Lamp Parade has an international angle

The bible urges folks not to hide their lamp under a basket, and that adage is certainly going to come true on Oct. 20 at 7pm when the Mt. Holly Lamp Parade steps off at Ida Rankin Elementary School, continues down West Central Avenue, turns right on South Main Street, and ends at the newly christened permanent trellis system for the Mount Holly Farmer’s Market. During the parade, folks will see over 20 dazzling and illuminated lamps marched through town.

The parade will be led by members of the official drumline of the Panthers, PurrCussion. Kathleen Doody of Toronto, Canada will be on hand to judge the lanterns for the prizes. Doody is an artist with over 20 years of lantern-making experience, and conducts lantern parades internationally The lamps will include such fanciful creations as the legendary flying horse Awaken Gallery owner Emily Andress and Irish artist Olive Stack with the Pegasus lantern that will be Pegasus, a huge fish, a giant snake with hoisted at the Mt. Holly Lantern Parade.

by local students from schools like Ida Rankin Elementary, local artists like Diane Pike, and Awaken Gallery owner Emily Andress. They are made of wire and willow sticks with translucent paper stretched over the framework.

Pitching in to lend her expertise to the lamp parade project has been Irish artist Olive Stack who is a resident of and art gallery owner in Listowel, County Kerry, Ireland. Stack’s jaunt to Mt. Holly to work with the lantern parade was sponsored by the Mt. Holly Community Development Foundation.

“I love Mt. Holly,” Stack said. “The people are so warm and friendly. It’s a lot like home.”

During her stay, Stack has been working with other artists and Ida Rankin students as they craft their lanterns. She’s also making one that will represent the 1916 Mt. Island Mill bell that’s at the Mt. Holly Historical Society.

Stack and Andress met several years ago and are close friends.

“I got the idea for the lamp parade after seeing one in Paris,” said Andress.

At its last meeting, the Belmont city council approved an ordinance that will allow those so inclined to keep a small flock of chickens on their property- with provisions.

The approved ordinance will allow the keeping of up to four chickens in the rear yard area if all requirements can be met. Requirements include setbacks from side and rear property lines, chicken housing requirements, cleanliness, and permitting.

The city got involved in the chicken business by meeting with local residents who gave feedback on a draft of the ordinance. Lara Worden, area agent from the NC Cooperative Extension Service, also offered NC Cooperative Extension master gardener Dana suggestions.

Four arrested at Jail-A-Thon On Saturday, three elected officials and one city employee were arrested on nefarious charges, placed in manacles, and hauled by paddywagon to the ‘Jail House' at Patriots Park during Mountaineer Days.

The three elected officials arrested were Mayor Scott Neisler and Council members David Allen and Rodney Gordon. Each had to raise $200 bond within two hours. Due to rowdy behavior, Rodney Gordon had to raise additional bond money. Mayor Neisler implicated Karen Tucker who was subsequently arrested for "Impersonating the City Clerk." Tucker had to raise a $25.00 bond.

All funds raised benefit the Kings Mountain Historical Museum's history education boxes that highlight local history in Kings Mountain schools. Sarah Lunch, Museum Director, and Curator commented,

The Official State of North Carolina Fall Liver Mush Festival is this weekend Friday, Oct.19 and Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018 in Uptown Shelby around the historic Court Square!

Yes, it's time for Mush, Music and Mutts to mark the wonders of fall in Shelby.

Join in the fun with this traditional food festival that has something for everyone. Of course, there is Liver Mush to sample, with a variety of preparations and choices.

There is a fall festival of children's activities on the Court Square with Uptown Shelby Association and volunteers offering crafts and fun activities for the kids.

Four KMHS class reunions held Homecoming weekend Community

The Class of 1968 gathered for dinner on Friday night in Gastonia and celebrated at the Patrick Senior Center Saturday evening with 110 guests. Classmates bought ads and found creative ways to fund their event.

The Class of 1973 held their reunion at the Kings Mountain Country Club, and 80 attended. At noon on Saturday, the class had a picnic at Lake Crawford, followed by the reunion later

of 1978 held their festivities at Deer Woods Farm in Bessemer City as 80 gathered for the celebration. After dinner, classmates danced to a DJ as others visited on the patio or gathered around the fire pit.

Earlier in the day, classmates played a round of golf at the Kings Mountain Country Club.

South Carolina Corps of Cadets commencement 2019 More than 500 members of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets accepted diplomas during The Citadel’s commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 4 in McAlister Field House.

Graduates accepted their diploma from Citadel alumnus Gen. Glenn W. Walters, USMC (Ret.), who was officiating as president for the first time.

The Citadel Class of 2019 includes 528 cadets, veteran students and active duty students. The graduates come from 32 states and seven countries. About 35% of the class accepted comissions as U.S. military officers in all branches of service just prior to graduation.

The ceremony followed

three days of the Corps’ commencement-related actives, which included an awards convocation, commissioning ceremonies for cadets becoming military officers and The Citadel’s iconic Long Gray Line parade.

The top academic programs for the Class of 2019 included business administration, criminal justice, mechanical engineering, civil engineering and political science.

T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League to host tournament on Lake Wylie The FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) tournament season will continue Saturday, May 18, with the T-H Marine FLW BFL South Carolina Division tournament on Lake Wylie. Up to 400 boaters and co-anglers will be competing for top awards of up to $8,000 and $3,000 respectively in the one-day tournament. Takeoff: 6:30 a.m. EDT. Weigh-In: 2:30 p.m., Buster Boyd’s Landing, 3990 Charlotte Highway, Lake Wylie, S.C.Hosted by the Rock Hill/York County Convention & Visitor’s Bureau.

The bass fishing on Lake Wylie is expected to be very good. The majority of the bass should be postspawn,

although there could be a few late stragglers still being found on the beds. Key areas will likely be found where shad are spawning and points where the bass head postspawn – usually 10 feet of water or less. Crankbaits, ChatterBaits, spinnerbaits and topwater lures are all expected to be used heavily by anglers in this event.

Water clarity could play a role in this tournament – the lower lake is stained, while the upper lake has been clear on the main channel. Recent reports say the South Fork is still muddy. Fans following the action should expect a five-bass limit nearing 15 to 16 pounds to win this midMay BFL event.
