MHPD officer loses life in line of duty

Deep tragedy struck last Friday morning when Mt. Holly police officer Tyler Herndon lost his life performing his duty.

Herndon, 25, was killed in an exchange of gunfire after responding to a report of a breaking and entering at Mt. Holly Car Wash and Arcade near Beatty Drive on NC273 just north of I-85. The incident took place around 3:30am.

Herndon and several other officers engaged a suspect later identified as Joshua Tyler Funk, 24, of Mt. Holly.

Shots were exchanged and Herndon was hit. He was taken to CaroMont Main in Charlotte where he passed away.

Funk received a minor injury and was taken to CaroMont Medical Center in

In 2019, Herndon was recognized for his effort to build better relationships between officers and civilians. Herndon would introduce himself to citizens throughout Mount Holly, and would sometimes buy gas and food for people in need.

R ECOLLECTIONS AND R EFLECTIONS Dear Sanny Claus Back in the days of yore of my newspaper career we would accept “Dear Santa” letters from kindergartens and first and second graders. Back then, the big thing kids wished for was something called an XBOX. It was a pain to try and decipher the scribblings of the young’uns and lawd I am a slow and inaccurate typist so the letters were somewhat of a pain but out of the hundreds I transposed from notebook paper to computer only one is still in my memory bank… “Dear Santa” it began… “Please get my daddy out of jail”.

Last weekend I went to the Toy Run for Kids and saw hundreds of motorcycle riders give out toys to kids. It was quite a sight. One image sticks in my mind… a little girl about three years old in her mom’s arms clutching the toys she got and the smile on her face.

Then and now that image almost makes me want to bust out crying. To all the Toy Run participants I say well done.

On the other hand. I don’t recall ever having written a letter to Sanny Clause myself but this year I think I will so here goes.

Dear Sanny Claus… I have been a good boy this year (IMHO)… so here’s what I want.

I want the so-called main stream news media to shut down for a week. No politics, no disasters, no drama. Just shut the heck up.

(I was going to use a word other than heck but remembered this is a family publication and changed my mind at the last minute).

I want COVID to go away and I especially want politicians to stop using this malady as

a tool to further their agendas.

I want politicians to be limited to three terms... three and you’re out.

I want people to try and get along and Alan Hodge to remove whatever Banner-News Editor chip they have on their shoulder for just a little while at least.

I want people to stop speeding, tailgating, texting/yakking on the phone while drivingespecially on N. Main St. in Belmont.

I want everyone who wants to work to have a job.

I want sick folks to get well no matter what their issue may be.

I want people bent on destroying things to channel all that energy/angst/anger to something constructive.

I want Riley to reach her full and great potential as soon as possible.

Last and by no means least, I want everyone to thank our police officers, fire fighters, EMT folks and other first responders. Please, Santa, reach in your magic bag and sprinkle these hard working and under-appreciated men and women with magic dust to keep them safe.

Well, maybe that’s a lot. Hey, Sanny Claus is about wishes, right?

Here’s hoping Sanny Claus, in whatever form you see him, stops by your home.

You knew I was having a tough day when…

By Tony Marciano Let me take you back to August when my wonderful assistant, Pam, started receiving emails about our Thanksgiving Food Box outreach campaign. Those individuals were so excited about blessing a neighbor with a complete Thanksgiving meal!

Families in need are given a frozen turkey along with all the fixings which includes dressing, string beans, cranberry sauce, yams, dessert, and so much more.

Each year, we receive more and more request for food boxes. Although we had commitments for food boxes, we were running short on turkeys. Each day, Pam reported that more and more people were committing food boxes without turkeys making the number of turkeys needed fall shorter and shorter.

Eleven days before Thanksgiving, we created a media event where I wore a turkey hat while asking the community for turkeys. Five TV stations showed up and

Merry Christmas Jane Parker, wherever you are you would find a tightly packaged, decent sized cake that had been baked in the form of a pound cake. The dark brown color didn’t show much to be desired, but my father thought he had struck gold when the package had arrived in the mail the first year that we had found it online.

That’s right folks; this was no ordinary fruitcake, but a holiday exclusive for our household for several years.

As previously mentioned, I have no clue where he first encountered Jane Parker and her baked goods but I am only left to assume that one year on his way home from his many weeks of travelling out of state, he must have stopped either at a specialty shop, a high-end grocery store, or mega gas station that sold old-timey penny candies and vintage toys to bring me as a surprise and stumbled across this monstrosity. As the years went on and my father stopped travelling for work, he began wondering if he could find a Jane Parker fruitcake anywhere because there were no grocery stores around North Carolina that sold that tell-tale tin and its fruitful contents. He began telling me about it and we took to the internet to do a deep dive for fruitcakes.

Back in the mid 2000’s however, the internet wasn’t the animal that it is today. We couldn’t even fathom what technologies we use today during those times. I remem-

ber asking Jeeves (or Jeevus as my father used to call him back then) for hours where we could find this fruitcake, and apparently Jane Parker was a hard woman to find! We dug, and dug, and dug, until finally we found a small little hole in the wall shop in Virginia (if my memory serves me correctly) that we wound up calling and haggling a deal for them to ship us several of Jane’s delicacies. After about a week or so, my father had his collector’s tin and the satisfaction he had longed for during the hustle and bustle of the most wonderful time of the year.

All joking aside, I don’t remember ever tasting one of those cakes although I’m sure

I probably did. To me, there is just nothing appealing Shelton Fisher about a fruitcake and I never understood what my father’s attraction to the confounded confection was.

The only thing that mattered however was that it made him happy. Jane Parker has long been out of business and for years he would claim that he would love to get his hands on a Jane Parker fruitcake. As much as I would love to see the smile on his face again, I’ll never forget the joy that Jane Parker brought to the table all those years ago.

W h a t was I going to do? I Tony Marciano also realized that I was tired and not just from Thanksgiving. 2020 has been a year that will go down as one of the most bizarre years of my life. Covid19 highjacked so many plans. The virus changed how all of us do business. I lost a friend and a co-worker due to the virus. It became more than a statistic; it was a real person whose life was taken from this world.

I needed peace. Not just calm, I needed an inner peace in this storm of life. I now must wear a mask and put a bag over my hand every time I pump gas. None of this surprised God. This Christmas, you will hear phrases such as “Peace on Earth.” As we celebrate the birth of the Christ child, may we be ever reminded that true peace begins in our heart. When I was 15, someone handed me a Billy Graham tract entitled, “Steps to Peace with God.” It took me through the process of turning my life over to God, trusting the one whose death on the cross could let me know I was “good with God” not because of what I did or would do with my life, but because of what Jesus did – dying for my sins. Once I have Peace in my Heart, I can share that Peace with others.

I’ll be back in two weeks.

By Shelton Fisher This is a special time of year where store fronts are decked out to the tee in red and green, the radio waves are plagued… I mean, pumped full of Christmas cheer, and certain food items are only available to make your spirit bright. It’s not exactly like eggnog is fitting to drink during those long summer evenings, am I right? Well, there are particular foods that stores carry that people seem to have a love/hate relationship with and it blows my mind how there is even a market for it.

Picture if you will, those little brown bricks that are stuffed with nuts, cherries, and several other varieties of “fruits”.

The fruitcake is one of the most repulsive holiday treats on the shelves but to John Fisher, there was one cake to rule them all. A fruitcake so moist and… “delicious” that you would have thought that it was made by the elves in Santa’s workshop.

I don’t know much about the history of the Jane Parker fruit cake, where he originally found it, or why in God’s name he ever wanted a fruitcake of all things. What I can tell you however is that it by far was not your ordinary holiday paperweight. It came in a collectors tin, typically with some holiday portrait on the lid and nutritional information on the bottom (as if there’s anything “nutritious” about this mass of mystery bread). Upon opening the tin,

the turkeys began to come in. The Friday and Saturday before Thanksgiving brought over 500 vehicles onto the campus of Charlotte Rescue Mission delivering food boxes and turkeys. We had so many turkeys we had to build a wall at the back of the freezer truck to contain them.

The Monday before Thanksgiving is our big Thanksgiving Food box give away. Our partnering agencies come to pick up the food and deliver it to our most fragile neighbors. One problem, Pam was out. She is the Queen of our Thanksgiving Food Box program. Another staff member agreed to take on the task. By the time we were done, we distributed 5,100 Thanksgiving Food Boxes and 7,221 turkeys.

The Wednesday before Thanksgiving was my day to catch my breath. I was so very grateful that God did what He always does - He showed up. Once again, He moved the hearts of so many people to make Thanksgiving a memorable day. We calculated that the program served over 20,400 individuals. Just one problem…

(And please forgive me, I’m not trying to use 7th grade bathroom humor). I’m in the bathroom of the Rescue Mission’s Community Matters Café. I looked down and saw the tag on my underwear.

“That’s strange” I thought.

“The tag is supposed to be in the back.” It is then I realized that I had my underwear on backwards for several hours and didn’t know it. I laughed.

Worth the wait!

Soon it will be Christmas. Most people, especially kids, can hardly wait for Christmas morning. My kids always counted down the days to Christmas when they were small.

Waiting is not something we enjoy doing. Nobody wants to wait in line at a restaurant, or for a stoplight to change. We expect everything now! Before that first Christmas, many people were waiting for the long-awaited Messiah.

In Luke 2:25-35 we are introduced to a man named Simeon. Simeon like many in Israel, was waiting on the Lord’s Messiah. The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that he would not die until he had seen the Christ. One day the Holy Spirit led Simeon into the temple the same day Joseph and Mary brought Jesus in to make a sacrifice for Him. Knowing Jesus was the One, Simeon took the Child into his arms, and thanked God that he had seen God’s salvation. Simeon blessed the Child and His parents and prophesied about the coming death on the cross Jesus would suffer for the world to be saved.

For centuries Israel waited for their Messiah. They expected a warrior king who would

overthrow Roman rule and establish Israel as a sovereign nation again.

People today are waiting on something to save them. We wait for money, Rev. Trent Tankin vaccines, and other things to help or extend our lives. Exactly what everyone is waiting for is already here, Jesus, yet sadly too many reject Him. Simeon recognized salvation in his arms as he held the infant Jesus. He knew he could now die in peace, because true salvation had come. Gazing in the eyes of Jesus, Simeon had found what he had longed for.

The wait is over, Jesus is here! Many people are waiting for Christmas to come.

Christmas came that night Jesus was born.

That one event was an absolute gamechanger.

Something far greater than an earthly king, or great wealth has come, Jesus. Just as Simeon recognized, Jesus changed the world forever.

Simeon’s life was changed forever. We too can find the salvation Simeon experienced when we come to Jesus by faith. Jesus is everything we have waited for. Because of Jesus we have hope, a reason to go on. Because of Jesus’ death on the cross, our sins are forgiven. Because of Jesus, and our faith in Him, we will live with Him forever. I would say Jesus was definitely worth the wait!

Board of Education elects chairman and vice chairman The Gaston County Board of Education conducted its organizational meeting on Monday, December 7 to select a chairman and vice chairman to serve for the next two years.

At-large member Jeff Ramsey was elected by the Board to serve as chairman, and at-large member Dot Cherry was elected to serve as vice chairman.

The organizational meeting took place following the induction ceremony for elected officials.

During the 9:00 a.m. induction ceremony at the Gaston County Schools Central Office, Dot Guthrie, Robbie Lovelace, Brent Moore, and Jeff Ramsey were sworn in to serve on the Board of Education. The Honorable David A. Phillips, superior court judge, presided and administered the oath of office.

Guthrie, Moore, and Ramsey were reelected to the Board during the November 3 general election. Lovelace was elected to the Board for the first time. They will serve four-year terms.

The first regular meeting for the newly-organized Board of Education is scheduled for Monday, December 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the Gaston County Schools Central Office. The meeting will air live on Spectrum Channel 21 and the Gaston County Board of Education YouTube channel.

Gaston County Schools leads the state in Career and Technical Education

The N.C. Department of Public Instruction and State Board of Education have released Career and Technical Education (CTE) credential performance data for the 2019-2020 academic year, and it provides “good newsâ€? for Gaston County Schools. *DVWRQ &RXQW\ 6FKRROV LV Ă€UVW LQ WKH VWDWH IRU WKH QXPEHU RI CTE credentials earned by students and Ă€UVW LQ WKH VWDWH IRU WKH percentage of students earning more than one credential in a particular CTE area. It is the only time since the state began tallying credential performance data in 2010-2011 that the same school district has earned top rankings in both categories in the same year.

•Highest number of CTE credentials Gaston County had 14,986 credentials earned by students during the 2019-2020 year – the highest amount in the state among all school districts and charter schools. Wake County, the largest school district in the state based on student enrollment, was second with 12,895 credentials. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, WKH VHFRQG ODUJHVW VFKRRO GLVWULFW LQ WKH VWDWH ZDV ÀIWK ZLWK 7,016 credentials earned by students.

In response to the community’s request for more technical (vocational) training for students, the Board of Education established the CTE oversight committee in 2015. The committee, which involved business, community, and education leaders, reviewed CTE programs and shared feedback to ensure that WKH FRXUVHV DQG SDWKZD\V EHLQJ RͿHUHG ZHUH LQ DOLJQPHQW ZLWK the current workforce demand. Also, the committee wanted to ensure that CTE courses were relevant and equipped students for career and college readiness.

Brett Buchanan, director of Career and Technical Education for Gaston County Schools and a former CTE teacher, knows how important it is for students to be prepared for the workforce. “Students cannot wait until they graduate to decide what they are going to do with their life. They have to start thinking about their future. That is why we have expanded the number of CTE courses in our middle schools and high schools,� said Buchanan. “We also are placing a career emphasis on our school choice programs as another way to provide students with opportunities to explore job possibilities and gain skills and credentials.�

Buchanan is pleased with the progress that has been made over the past several years. “Career and Technical Education is key to student success because it introduces them to potential careers and helps to prepare them for their professional life,â€? explained Buchanan. “Our CTE programs teach, train, guide, and empower students LQ D YDULHW\ RI FDUHHU Ă€HOGV ,Q DGGLWLRQ WR SURYLGLQJ TXDOLW\ programs, we want to connect our students with potential employers so they can see the job opportunities available to them right here in Gaston County. Tyler Avery Herndon Patrolman Tyler Avery Herndon, 25, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on December 11, 2020 at Caromont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia, NC. Born in Mecklenburg County, NC, he was preceded in death by grandfather Adolphus “Junior�

Phillips, uncle James Phillips and cousin Kristina Phillips.

He was a 2017 graduate of UNC Charlotte majoring in Criminal Justice with a minor in Psychology. At the time of his death, Tyler was employed with the Mount Holly Police Department as a Patrolman.

Tyler always wanted to be in law enforcement and loved his job. He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.

He enjoyed spending time with friends and liked to make those around him laugh. He was an avid fan of soccer, football, basketball and baseball. He was a loving son, grandson, brother, boyfriend, cousin, and friend.

The family sends its deepest thanks to the Mount Holly Police Department and community for their overwhelming support as well as the Cleveland County Police Department for its assistance to the family.

Even the pandemic failed to dampen Reid’s hospitable spirit. “Charles would say we had to practice social distancing,� Vera said. “He always kept bottled water, sodas, and chips for the guests to enjoy. Whenever the family or someone in the community needed some advice Charles would always try to give them words of encouragement or even offer to pray with them.�

Oscar said. “He showed leadership to everybody in his community, ministry, and love of music. He showed obedience in showing his practical acceptance of the authority and will of God. He showed virtue in his daily life by honoring God and being willing to help out people. He showed empathy in his compassion for his family, community, and all mankind.�

He graduated from Belmont High School in 1969. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Hampton University, a master’s in education from UNC Charlotte, and a master’s in divinity from Hood Theological Seminary.

Reid also had a successful career as a counselor at Family Housing Services of Charlotte. He was also a personnel analyst for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and director of Student Support Services at Johnson C. Smith University. He worked as a career development specialist for Goodwill Industries in Charlotte where he retired in 2019.

One of Reid’s greatest accomplishments was his leadership role with the Charles Jesse Bynum Reid Foundation.

The foundation is named after Reid’s grandfather, Professor Charles Jesse Bynum Reid and his wife, Maude Herndon Reid for whom Reid School for African-American students was named. Today, Reid Park in Belmont is named in the Reid’s honor.

The scene Saturday at the Mt. Holly Municipal Complex was a somber one. In the police department headquarters, officers and staff stood together and talked quietly. Outside, a police car was covered over with flower bouquets and memorials. Officers, firefighters, and a steady stream of citizens stood nearby.

A candlelight vigil was held in Herndon’s honor Sunday evening. It would have been his 26th birthday.

His funeral was Tuesday,

December 15 at 2:00 pm at First Baptist Church in Kings Mountain, with Rev. Dr. Steve Taylor and Rev. Dr. John Sloan officiating. Burial followed at Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery, Kings Mountain.

Gov. Cooper lays on modified Stay at Home Order Governor Roy Cooper and North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mandy Cohen have announced that North Carolina will begin a Modified Stay at Home Order after a rapid increase in North Carolina’s key COVID-19 trends.

The Order requires people to stay at home between 10 pm and 5 am and went into effect Friday, December 11 and will be in place until at least January 8, 2021.

Gaston County offering appointment-based services In an effort to protect both its employees and residents, Gaston County is implementing appointment-based services at its administration building. The service began Monday, Dec. 7.

For those who need to make tax payments, The County continues to offer drive-through tax bill payments, for residents who wish to pay in person by cash or check, at 405 N. Chester St. in Gastonia. This eliminates

the need for face-to-face contact, making this payment method a safer and contactless option for citizens and county employees alike. The drive-thru operates Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Non-cash payments may also be made by utilizing drop boxes at the tax office, located at the Gaston County Administration Office, 128 W. Main Ave., in Gastonia.

The Gaston County Senior Center is also operating on an appointment-only basis. The Gaston County library system will continue to operate with the current in-person hours combined with curbside service. Meditations The one high place

“Now Judah did evil in the sight of the Lord, and they provoked Him to jealousy with their sins which they committed, more than all that their fathers had done. For they also built for themselves high places, sacred pillars, and wooden images on every high hill and under every green tree.” I Kings 14:22-23 NKJV. During biblical times, high places were elevated sites for worship. Earlier, Abram and Joshua were found to build stone pillars as places of worship to Yahweh. Later in the Israelite history, Judah began to erect high places for idol worship.

There is only one high place that should be elevated, and that is the Lord, Jesus Christ, at the center of our life. However, like Israel, we sometimes permit other high places to take center stage.

Each day I spend time praying, I always include prayers of confession and affirmation.

During my confessions, I ask God to reveal the high places in my life. Surprisingly, one area that was revealed was my hurts. I tend to nurse the wounds of my heart and speak more of the hurts than of God, who can heal all wounds. As a result, I am in a lament and repentance season, asking what blind areas I contributed to my wounds? It is the area of unforgiveness and bitterness.

“Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord; looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness

springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled.” Hebrews 12:14-15 NKJV. These verses are concerning Esau, who rejected something precious. Esau sold his birthright for food and refused to repent.

The essence of the bitter root passage serves as a reminder of the danger of selfcenteredness. We must take great care not to become consumed with our perspective that we refuse to repent, forgive, and heal. It is not the hurt that is sinful. Many of us experience hurt and rejection, but if we root ourselves in pain and permit anger instead of dealing with it in a godly manner, it can lead to ungodly behavior. Eventually, it can destroy relationships, the body of Christ, and our soul.

As God began to reveal these high places to me, I spent time lamenting and repenting.

But be careful when you think you have arrived. One morning I prayed, “God, I thank you that all the high places in my heart have been revealed. I no longer have any high place.” Then I hear these words spoken to my heart, “You need to repent from the high place of arrogance and ego.”

We will continuously be a work in progress. “Be confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.” Philippians 1:6 NKJV. Don’t beat yourself up if you miss the mark. We will have this continual battle between flesh and spirit. Instead, rejoice in that God has given us the presence of his Spirit to lead us into truth and godly living. Our character grows in our relationship with Jesus Christ, and the trials we experience.

Christmas imagination

By Dennis Siracusa My first thoughts of God were somehow connected to Santa Claus. That gave way to my own personal musings and earthly searches which eventually led me to college and the educated sway of atheist professors.

Finally, in 1979 a friend bought me a bible and after reading my New Jerusalem bible for 5 months I began to see things more clearly.

Here is a glimpse of my understanding of God today.

We make room for the theory of evolution because it helps our small imaginations explain our surroundings; even with this impossible theory imbedded in billions of construction years. And those kinds of years make us shy away from trying to imagine a triune God that is infinitely bigger than that; bigger than we can think or imagine. Here is some truth; God can do anything! Have we ever thought about the stars we see at night?

We talk about space travel to our moon or Mars but why not a star; we can see them; why not go there? It turns out our sun is the only star in our solar system and it is 93 million miles away. The next nearest star in our Milky Way galaxy is Alpha Centauri and it is 4.37 light years from earth, and our galaxy has billions of stars. And did you know our galaxy spins? It rotates 490,000 miles per hour and is so huge it takes 200 million years to complete one single rotation. And beyond our galaxy are billions of other galaxies each with billions of stars and all of this is under our triune God’s watch care. In fact, He has named them all. Psalm 147:4.

Our God is infinite and He keeps all the celestial bodies spinning, and has hidden

mysteries of quasars and black holes for us to consider and even knows the most intimate details about each of us at the same time. He never sleeps and never runs out of ideas or power for that matter. He created all of this because He loves us, wanted to stretch our imagination, and give us a small indication of why we should love and respect Him. Jesus became flesh to show us how to live and to demonstrate the Father’s love and power. I love the lyrics to a beloved Christmas song.

O Little Town of Bethlehem How still we see thee lie Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by Yet in the dark streets shineth The everlasting light The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight.

Consider that! Jesus is our everlasting light, and all our hopes and fears are totally met in Him. John 8:12 With Christmas upon us, God wants us to enjoy family and friends, dinners and fellowship, but let us remember our incredible God and our savior Jesus Christ. He doesn’t live in our little manger displays, but calls out to us with the light of His gospel message and wants us to invite Him into our hearts. It’s Christmas and Jesus is the Reason for this season. Can you imagine the kind of unbounded love God has for you? And consider this. God the Father is an omnipresent spirit.

He is everywhere, and stands at the door of our lives waiting for each of us to invite him in. Christmas is a perfect time to do that.

Judy Closson helped start KBB about 20 years ago.

Closson had moved from Fort Worth, Texas, where she had been a member of the Fort Worth Clean City and was interested in joining such an organization in Belmont.

She inquired at City Hall and was put in contact with councilman Dick Cromlish. Dick and Sandra Cromlish had organized a city wide clean up with their son, Stan Cromlish, as a Boy Scout project.

After meeting with Dick and a group of four other Belmont residents; Dick and Sandra Cromlish, Carol Dixon Strange, and Harold Fite, a committee was formed. Each person contributed $50.00 seed money and Keep Belmont Beautiful began.

Once this committee began meeting regularly, they inquired how to form and become an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful with Jernnie Stultz, who at that time was executive director of Keep Gastonia Beautiful and a trainer with Keep America Beautiful. Stultz helped KBB organize and train its board, complete by-laws, become

incorporated, obtain office space, telephone, etc. Once all of the requirements were met KBB was certified on April 21, 2001, with Keep America Beautiful.

“Our first office was in the basement of historic City Hall,” Closson said. “As we grew we were given a small closet at School Specialities

by Dick Cromlish. KBB planned two clean ups (fall and spring) where we would have 100 plus volunteers attend to clean up the city.

David Isnehour, director of public works, played a huge part working with KBB to make these clean ups successful. Our volunteers are from many groups – Boy and Girl Scouts, church groups, sport teams, Belmont Middle School, South Point High School, school clubs, ROTC, as well as. many regular citizens. KBB quickly learned the value of a volunteer always remembering ‘a volunteer does not have to be there’. Mini clean ups were organized by learning that ‘litter breeds more litter’.

Also, some volunteers adopted areas to clean up on a regular basis.”

Later, KBB moved to space provided by City of Belmont in the public works building.

“KBB branched out with several contests, one being the naming of our ‘mascot’ Cleaning Beauty,” said Closson. “This mascot was designed with a trash can and we won $200.00 at the first Run for the Money sponsored by the Community Foundation of Gaston County. This

Run continues today each spring with matching funds given to nonprofits by donors in the surrounding communities. Once we had secured funds we were able to begin giving grants to the five Belmont schools each year for a school beautification project on their campus. The Clean Campus project began with judging of the outside grant projects.”

KBB volunteers went into the schools for educating students on ways to help with the drought, growing gardens and recycling. KBB was instrumental in helping North Belmont Elementary plan and build an outdoor reading garden.

“We received a grant from KAB to promote a recycling program of plastic bottles,” Closson said. “They were collected and counted daily.

The classes that collected the most were treated to ice cream parties at the schools.

We were awarded first prize in the area and received 1,000 blue fleece jackets which were made from plastic bottles and were given to the students.”

Over the years KBB added Yard of the Month which is held during the summer months. Each month

four Belmont resident yards and one business are chosen to display the Yard of the Month sign for that month.

Last year under the direction of Board Member, Susan Wall, the Flower Power program began with volunteers maintaining the flower beds on Main Street and in the River District.

“We have purchased pansies for Main Street and mulch for the point of Main and Central Avenue,” said Closson. “KBB helped get graffiti removed from a building downtown. We have participated in the Christmas Tree Lighting, Christmas Parade and decorated City Hall for Christmas.”

In addition, KBB holds a plant sale in the spring,

held a telephone book recycling contest along with all county schools and won, put markers on drains for storm water, has held shred days, planted an Angel Tree at Holy Angels in 2014, donated waste containers, a Stowe Park bench, and received a grant from KAB for cigarette waste containers that have been put around the city.

Most recently KBB partnered with the Montcross Chamber giving away 900 free redbud seedlings provided by Dominion Energy to residents.

“We have continued to grow and obtained office space in the new CityWorks building,” Closson says.

“In 2018 the City hired a part time executive director, Beryl Campbell. Until that time KBB was the only affiliate in NC that was run by a total volunteer staff.”

KBB currently has fifteen board members. The officers are: Judy Closson, Chairperson, Elizabeth Atterberry, Vice Chairperson, Claudina Ghianni, Secretary and Marcia Abernathy, CPATreasurer.

Win puts Abbey at 2-0 on the year Five Belmont Abbey women’s basketball players scored in double figures in their 89-72 victory over Wingate last week. The win puts The Abbey at 2-0 on the year. The Bulldogs dipped to 0-3. How It Happened - Maria Kuhlman made to early 3-pointers to put The Abbey up 8-0. The Crusaders never lost the lead.

Shelby Darden scored the last five Crusader points of the quarter, giving BAC a 22-13 advantage. In the second, the Crusaders again scored the first eight points of the quarter. Keyanna Spivey scored eight points in the quarter, and Belmont Abbey held a 51-32 lead at halftime. Brittany Autry (pictured) scored four in the third to lead the Crusaders, and BAC led 61-49 heading into the final

Kuhlman made a 3-point shot in the closing seconds of the first to pull The Abbey to within a point, 19-18, at the end of the quarter. The Crusaders took a 24-22 lead

early in the second. Later in the half, the defense held the Spartans scoreless for a 4:35 span. Kuhlman made two 3-point shots late in the second to put the Crusaders up 38-34 at halftime. The teams traded leads throughout the third quarter, which was a defensive battle. BAC held UNCG to a 5:45 span of no field goals near the end of the period. Jo Snow capped off the Crusader scoring in the period with two free throws, and the Spartans held a 52-49 lead heading into the final period. Two quick

baskets by Brittany Autry early in the fourth put The Abbey in front 53-52. The Abbey’s defense was again strong in the fourth, giving up just two Spartan points in the first 8:50 of the quarter.

The Abbey won the contest 63-60. Kuhlman and Downing scored 15 points each, while Autry scored 12 and grabbed five rebounds. Keyanna Spivey grabbed seven rebounds, while freshman Shelby Darden pulled down six.
