Chronicle Mill project surging forward

The redevelopment project at Belmont’s Chronicle Mill on E. Catawba St. is moving forward at a rapid pace.

Last week, nearly 100 workers from Armada Hoffler Construction were busily hammering, sawing, nailing, ground moving, brick laying and more. Plans are for the $50 million residential/

retail project to be completed and ready for occupancy by the third quarter of 2022.

The partnership for the project, Chronicle Holdings, includes John and Jennifer Church who originally bought the mill about ten years ago, Armada Hoffler, and Shane Seagle.

The 100+ year old mill building itself has required considerable work to make it structurally stable. Also, a See CHRONICLE MILL, Page 4

When we think of love, we often think of February and Valentine’s Day. We think of romantic love, or the love we have for our family and friends. When we think of love, we should always think of the love God has for us. God loves us and pours His mercy and grace out on us every day. He expects us to love others too.

John 15:9-17 records Jesus’ last moments with His disciples before He went to the cross. On that last night, Jesus gathered with His disciples to celebrate the Passover Feast.

There, they ate the meal together, and Jesus washed His disciples’ feet, teaching them the importance of being a servant to others.

Jesus offered them words of comfort. He told them soon the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, would come upon them. Jesus also gave them a new commandment. He said, “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you” (John 15:12, ESV). Jesus had loved His disciples so much that He would soon die for them. He was now asking of His disciples that they love others too.

As Christians, we are people of love. Just as Jesus loved people, so should we. Show-

ing love is how we reflect Jesus to a world that is so unlovely. Sadly, too often we fail to love those around us. We can present ourselves as judgmental, uncaring, and unloving. Rev. Trent Rankin Instead of leading people to Jesus, we can become a stumbling block. In our world today, we encounter people from all walks of life. One thing is for sure, everyone needs to be loved. People are experiencing illness, money problems, worry, and other daily struggles. People need to know they are loved, and that someone cares about them.

When we show love to people around us, it gives us a tremendous opportunity to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with them. We never know how we will impact someone’s life for Jesus. This week we will be presented with many opportunities to love someone in Jesus’ name. We may see someone in line at the grocery store, the gas station, or even at work.

There will be someone we meet this week who needs to be loved, someone who needs Jesus.

We have been loved by Jesus, now it is time to share that same love with others. Why do we love, because Jesus loves us!

Men and women, who serve or have served in the military or as a first responder, are encouraged to attend and bring their families to this special event.

Master Gardener Group of Gaston County program Payton Flowers is a Gaston County native that grew up in Belmont. Flowers graduated from South Point High School, and attended North Carolina State University where he obtained his bachelor of science degree in Animal Science with a minor in Agribusiness.

He spent five years managing and operating a local nursery and farm. Since starting his role as Commercial Horticulture Agent for Gaston County in June of 2020, Flowers has hosted numerous pesticide applicator trainings, landscape contractor trainings, began work on multiple agent lead field trials and distributed grower certificates to our local farmers’ mar-

In-person fall prevention workshop for seniors returns The North Carolina Cooperative Extension will offer its popular program for older adults that aims to reduce, or even prevent, fall risks at home. The “A Matter of Balance” workshop is a national program sponsored

by Centralina Area Agency on Aging and consists of eight sessions that will be held in person on Mondays and Wednesdays, September 20 through October 13, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

All sessions will be held at

the Lucile Tatum Center, located at 959 Osceola St., Gastonia, NC. “This program makes such a difference in the lives of workshop participants,” said Linda Minges, a program instructor. “The fear of falling could actually lead to a fall because that fear limits activities, causes difficult emotions, and leads to isolation, which can lead to poor balance and weakness.”

“We are pushing the mill back to its original footprint,” John Church said.

Armada Hoffler director of multifamily operations Alex Olsen is overseeing the job.

“It has been very challenging,” he said. “But we got over the hurdles.”

John Church praised the work that the Armada Hoffler crews were undertaking.

“They know what they are doing,” he said.

In addition to 9,000 sq. ft. of retail space, the project will include luxury apartments in a separate structure to the side and rear of the mill. Framing for that portion was tackled last week. Studio and one bedroom apartments, which will comprise about seventy percent of the residential area, will rent for around $1,000-$1,600 a month. Units will feature open and airy lofts, have exposed brick walls, and boast expansive windows amplifying tons of natural light.

Modern upscale finishes and high-tech features will also be part of the package. There will be plenty of amenities such as a clubhouse and pool.

A fourth floor is also planned for the main mill building. The iconic mill tower will remain. Six townhomes are also slated for construction on the mill property at the corner of First St. and E. Catawba.

The ground between the front of the mill and E. Catawba will be greenspace.

The section of E. Catawba in front of the project has been widened and parallel parking space created. There will be a parking deck for about 80 spaces at the east end of the property near First St. There will be a total parking 240 spaces.

A building across the street at 85 E. Catawba will be transformed into 6,000 sq. ft. of retail and office space.

About the Chronicle Mill The 110,000 sq. ft. Chronicle Mill was built in 1901

by R.L. Stowe and other investors. Workers who laid the bricks for the imposing three-story structure earned $1.75 for every thousand they put down. The mill’s name was chosen to honor a Revolutionary War patriot from Gaston County, Major William Chronicle, who had lived near the mill site and was killed in the Battle of King’s Mountain in October 1780. The first bale of cotton was fed into the Chronicle Mill’s steampowered machinery on Feb. 28, 1902. By 1908, the mill was powered by electricity, a move that doubled production. In time, countless cones of cotton thread would be spun at the Chronicle Mill until it finally shut down in Conceptualized Pool.

15th and the event is September 25. Arts Mt. Holly will provide one 11x14 canvas. Artists will also need additional canvases/paper, their chosen medium (oils, acrylics, water colors, etc.), brushes, pencils or anything else needed to create theirwork.

Arts Mt. Holly will provide a list of recommended Mount Holly locations to registered student artists. Adult supervision at paint sites is strongly recommended and must be provided at the discretion of school personnel and parents. Students may paint from outside art sites at their home, or designated by their parents / art teacher. Gaston County Public Library to host dementia education series Gaston County Public Library (GCPL) will be hosting two dementiarelated workshops in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association – Western Carolina Chapter at GCPL’s main library, located at 1555 East Garrison Boulevard in Gastonia. Both workshops begin at 6 p.m., and each session is free and open to the general public. Registra-

The first session titled “10 Warning signs of Alzheimer’s” will be Tuesday, September 14, and the second session, “Understanding Alzheimer’s and Dementia,” will be Tuesday, September 21.

What do you get when you cross purple hair and a smoke detector?

By Tony Marciano A few weeks ago, my daughter came over to my house so my wife could touch up her purple hair. Yes, I said purple hair. Maria has had her hair that color for several years.

I didn’t understand everything she and my wife were doing. At one point, I think they had to bleach the dark roots. Then, they would turn the “white hair” purple. We should have thought about this when my mother’s hair went gray. We could have had a grandmother and a granddaughter with purple hair living together.

After several processes, Maria decided to take a shower. Two things I had forgotten, first, how hot she likes to get the shower in the bathroom, and second, she doesn’t turn on the exhaust fan.

There’s a twist to this story. Recently, we installed a home security system. I’ll call it VerySafe. Besides the basic door and window alarms, I purchased two smoke detectors. I placed them within six inches of the original smoke detectors when the house was built twenty-four years ago.

Smoke detector placement is key to this story.

After Maria was done showering, she opened the

bathroom door. Suddenly, the upstairs smoke detector goes off. Then the downstairs smoke detector goes off and we didn’t know what was causing it. At that point, I get a call from VerySafe. In a moment of panic, I pressed the wrong button and hung up on them. Their call went to voice mail. Next, they called my wife, but she had her phone turned off.

VerySafe then called my daughter’s phone. Fortunately, her husband Will answered the call. They were calling to tell us the smoke detector was set off. We informed them it was a false alarm. They were able to notify the fire department. I was relieved – that is until the doorbell rang. There were three fire fighters and one fire truck parked in front of my house. They explained they had received the false alarm report but still had to come to make sure there was no fire. I was so embarrassed. Twice I asked if I was in trouble with them and they said no.

I looked at Maria and asked why didn’t she turn on the fan? She replied, “But you lose all that great hot steam.”

How do you argue with that?

The original smoke detector that is hard wired into the electricity of the house never went off. It was six inches

away from the VerySafe alarm. The VerySafe alarm was so sensitive, steam, not smoke, set it off.

I’m not sure what the problem is with my original smoke detectors. They may be dusty, and I probably need to remove the covers and vacuum them. Had I relied just on them, and it was a real fire, it could have been disastrous.

Sometimes our hearts become just like these two smoke detectors. We can be like the VerySafe detector that responded to steam and have an open heart that is sensitive to others and is welcoming to trying new things and experiencing new adventures. Or we can be like the original

smoke detector and have a closed Tony Marciano heart that has been hardened by the challenges of life. Our heart becomes jaded, and we become bitter. There is a scripture verse that says God will remove our heart of stone and replace it with a heart of flesh.

I pray your heart never gets hardened. I pray that living in this world doesn’t close your heart and make you a jaded person. I hope your heart always feels, always gives and is always a heart of flesh.

N.C. Mountain State Fair “Rides Again” in 2021 The N.C. Mountain State Fair “Rides Again” in 2021, returning to the WNC Ag Center in Fletcher, Sept. 10-19.

In response to requests, a youth show for llamas has been added. This includes multiple youth classes for pack, public relations, obstacles and even a costume class with the theme, “All Things Food!”

Since so many youths are raising their own flocks of chickens and ducks, a new Youth Poultry Egg Show sets the stage for fierce competition where judges will evaluate each dozen of white, brown or blue/green or other shelled chicken and duck eggs based on USDA standards. Fresh eggs entered must be from the exhibitor’s flock raised on their farm or homeplace.

The gospel singing contest will be held Sept. 18 with contests for solo performers and groups.

Cooking contests will be held daily throughout the fair. Every contest is sponsored by a state commodity association, including the N.C. Tomato Growers Association, N.C. Aquaculture Association, N.C. Beef Council, N.C. Pork Council, N.C. Egg Association, N.C. Blueberry

The ice cream eating competition will be in the Davis Event Center on Sept.

14 with several categories for different age groups and even celebrities. Mills River Creamery, a local dairy and creamery, sponsors this contest. Winners receive trophies for being the first person in their category to eat a specified amount of ice cream.

September brings an abundance of apples

By Lisa Harper In September, I think of two things…apples and apple recipes. Ironically, just today I received a cookbook in the mail from a Tennessee church. I had just ordered it about 10 days ago. Can you say RECIPES? I couldn’t put it down. Of course, the first pages I thumbed to was the dessert section. I have already marked my favorites.

Looking at a chart online, I discovered several apple varieties ripen in September.

They are Cortland, Golden Delicious, Jonathan, Red Delicious, Fuji, Granny Smith, and Rome Beauty. Others will soon follow in October. Regardless of when you prepare to search for your favorites, we have local orchards and farmers markets right here in our county. As

well, local and NC area apple festivals kick off during the month of September.

One of my favorite cities to explore and shop for apples is Hendersonville NC. It’s not too far away, plus it offers an array of activities once there.

Driving to the mountains is enjoyable and an added bonus. What a wonderful getaway to kick off this time of year.

Some fun facts: One of George Washington’s hobbies was pruning his apple trees.

A bushel of apples weighs about 42 pounds (up to 48 lbs) and will yield 12 to 15 quarts of applesauce.

It takes about 36 apples to create one gallon of apple cider.

Stuart Cramer comes from behind to beat East Gaston 28-21

Anytime local rivals go at it there are bound to be some fireworks and a little bit of excitement.

That proved to be the case when the East Gaston Warriors football team traveled to Cramerton to face the Stuart Cramer Storm in a non-conference matchup that went the distance.

The Storm took advantage of some late game turnovers to stage a dramatic comeback to beat the Warriors 28-21.

Both offenses played incredibly well with EG putting up 396 yards of total offense and Cramer keeping pace

with 364 yards.

Justin Rocquemore proved that he truly is a dual threat quarterback throwing for 292 yards and four touchdowns and running for 39 yards. Dameian Bentley was Cramer’s top receiver hauling in four passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns.

“I was proud of the way our guys stayed together playing as a team,” head coach Ben McMillan said. “They kept fighting even after some things didn’t go our way early on in the game.”

McMillan credits the defense with putting the Storm in a position to win the game.

Arias Nash, Josue Sanchez, Markel McKinney, Dameian Bentley, and Markiss Nelson all contributed in one way or another to the Cramer defensive effort. Nash and Sanchez were the games top tacklers with Sanchez leading the pack with 15 tackles followed by Nash who finished the night with 14.

Cramer had some tough moments, but they always found a way to turn things around.

For the most part coach McMillan thought his offense played well. When the going got rough the Storm offense delivered.

Now Cramer will go into the bye week looking pretty good at 2-1.

“Offensively we made some key plays when we needed to,” McMillan said.

“Going into the bye week

I feel like our team has improved each week. I want to continue.”

As for East Gaston, well this is a team that need not hang their head low. While no one likes it when a game gets away from them the Warriors played well and are giving Cramer their due.

“A tough loss,” head coach JT Postell said. “We played well at times but also lost focus at times and made too many mistakes at cru-

cial moments of the game. I am really proud of our fight and the way we battled for four quarters. Give Stuart Cramer a lot of credit, they made more plays than we did.

The Warriors had several players that distinguished themselves against Cramer.

Quarterback Trent Sherill went 11 for 25 for 166 yards and two touchdowns. Markel McKinney also put in a solid performance running for 101 yards off of 15 carries and a touchdown while pulling in six passes for 91 yards and a TD. While Sherrill and McKinney did some solid work Justin Hill needs to be mentioned as well. Hill ground out 126 yards off 22 carries and was the game’s top rusher.

Over the last few games East Gaston has shown that they are a team that can no longer be taken lightly. Look for them to continue to get better.
