Belmont Historical Society museum getting much needed repairs

The Belmont Historical Society museum in the circa 1900 R.L. Stowe House at 40 Catawba St. is getting some badly needed repairs to its floor and handicapped ramp.

The BHS museum has six main rooms and two large halls. The rooms and main hall are named for Belmont’s early doctors. The Dr. McDowell Room which is the

second room on the right as you come in the front door has structural issues. The beams, joists, and flooring were rotten and are being replaced at a significant cost to the Society.

Workers from Belmont Flooring were busy last week replacing the room’s subflooring and hardwood flooring with new material. The main beams and joists were repaired by HRGC Construc-

tion.

BHS member Elizabeth Atterberry explained how the damage was discovered.

“We were putting new displays in the Dr. McDowell Room and the floor gave way,” she said. “Water had been leaking behind where the handicapped ramp is located on the side of the house.”

When eight-year-old Belmont Central Elementary third grade student Anna-Grace Dover decided to plunge into the world of authorship, she had a veteran writer close at hand to guide her along the way.

That mentor and coach just happened to be her mom, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author L.P. (Leslie) Dover.

So, with mom’s help, Anna-Grace has her inaugural work, titled Moonlight and Aleena: A Tale of Two Friends, ready for all the world to read.

The book’s plot revolves around the unlikely but warm and enduring relationship between Moonlight, a lonely unicorn, and Allena, a member of a group of fairies terrorized by a fire-breathing but misunderstood dragon named Author Anna-Grace and mom novelist L.P. Dover made a great Zippy. As Anna-Grace’s team with the creation of Moonlight and Aleena: A Tale of Two story unfolds, the characters Friends.

Belmont gets new Christmas lights

Even though it still seems like summer, the City of Belmont is getting a jump on the Yuletide season by installing thousands of new and improved Christmas lights.

“City crews have started the process of installing

new Christmas lights around town and in the River District,” said Belmont public works direct Davis Isenhour.

“The City has stepped up and purchased an entirely new Christmas light package that includes 800 sets of new LED string lighting. The need to start early is due to the extended program where

the City will not only light up the typical sixty plus trees but will now include the entire area of Stowe Park fence along Main Street and around the new and larger Stowe Park fountain. The City has also ordered approximately 1,500 feet of lighted garland See LIGHTS, Page 2

AUTHOR From Page 1 “I’ve always been interested in unicorns and fairies,” Anna-Grace said. “That’s how the idea for the book popped into my head.”

Anna-Grace found out that authorship is hard work.

“I had to think of what would happen in the book,” she said. “I worked with my mom as a team.”

Under mom’s guidance, the book came together over the course of many months.

Getting the illustrations together and approved took up a considerable amount of time.

“My favorite part was seeing the pictures for the first time,” said Anna-Grace.

Even though this is her first book, it’s clear that it won’t be her last.

“I am brainstorming the next one now,” she says. “It will be titled Moonlight and Aleena: Journey to the Snowy Forest.”

There will also be commercial style red bows throughout downtown as well. The new program is part of the City of Belmont upgrades that have been taking place over the past year.

City Clerk Jamie Campbell has been working with Isenhour orchestrating the new improvements and starting the process of getting everything installed to meet the November 20th light up date.

“It takes a lot of time to get all these installed and in working order before it’s time to light up the town,” Isenhour said. “Typically we always start our preparation for the holidays in the first week of October. This only gave us seven or eight weeks to get everything up. But with all the new additions and upgrades we’ve already started to string lights. Along with the new decorations there are also sixty plus areas where banners will need to be hung as well.

Those go up about the first week of November. There’s a lot of work to do between now and Thanksgiving. We’re really excited with what we’ve purchased and how we think the town is going to look this year.”

Isenhour explained the need for the new decorations.

“Our old lights were simply worn out and have been pieced together for way to long,” he said. “Thanks to the efforts of city manager Adrian Miller and working with our city council we were able to

“It has been a process to raise funds,” she said. “We were able to raise $8,700 from the Community Foundation Run. Our recent silent auction raised another $2,800.”

The simple fact that the Stowe house is over 100 years old has a lot to do with the situation.

“The house is a great asset to Belmont,” Atterberry said.

“But it also takes a lot of upkeep.”

Library to celebrate life of Blackbeard with music Gaston County Public Library will celebrate Blackbeard the Pirate with a performance presented by Carolina Pro Musica. The event will be Saturday, September 29 at 11:00 a.m. at the Main Library. The event is free to the public and is appropriate for teens and adults.

Pepusch, sea chanteys, and folksongs to highlight events in Blackbeard’s life on the North Carolina coast, where he later died in November 1718.

GCPL kicks off new Jazz Series

Gaston County Public Library will kick off a new music series at the Main Library on Thursday, October 4 at 7:00 p.m.

The Library is partnering with Black Star Theater Company, a theatrical production company owned

by Shane Elks and located in Belmont, to highlight the singers and songwriters who shaped “America’s Classical Music.”

The performance series will be held the first Thursday of each month, starting October 2018, and concluding May 2019. Jazz greats such as Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone, Frank Sinatra, and others will be featured, as vocalists and special guests from Black Star Theater Company perform their songs and discuss their contributions to Jazz.

These performances are free to the public and appropriate for teens and adults.

the purpose of entertaining and educating the community through performance art. Black Star Theater brings cabarets, original plays, musicals and more to its audiences. Alzheimer’s Walk raises over $75,000 More than 460 people joined the Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s® - Gastonia in the fight to end Alzheimer’s disease at Rotary Centennial Pavilion on Sept. 8. Participants raised a record-breaking amount – over $75,000 – to fund Alzheimer’s care, support and research programs.

“Our Walk participants, volunteers, sponsors, staff and the Gastonia community went above and beyond to make this year’s Walk a huge success,” said Katherine L. Lambert, CEO of the Western Carolina Chapter. “We appreciate everyone coming together to take steps for Alzheimer’s disease and to raise critical funds for Alzheimer’s research and local support services.”

Hurricane Florence has passed and NC811 is here to help During this time, one important phone number can help residents from adding to complications during the cleanup process. For any clean up that involves digging or removing trees from the ground, North Carolina 811 reminds professional excavators and homeowners alike to call 811 at least three full business days before they start to dig.

Every nine minutes an underground utility line is damaged because someone decided to dig without first calling 811. Striking a single utility line during hurricane

clean up or any other time can lead to personal injury, penalties, repair costs, and expensive and inconvenient outages.

When residents call 811, they will speak with a North Carolina 811 representative who will take the location and description of the project site and notify affected utility operators. These utilities will then send professional locators to mark the approximate locations of their lines.

Once these lines have been marked, residents can begin to carefully clean up around the marked lines. This num-

ber is not to be used to report utility service outages.

“In the aftermath of devastation, we must remember that safety is a shared responsibility, and calling 811 helps protect the people who dig and entire communities,” said Louis Panzer, Executive Director of NC811. “It’s one easy phone call that will help make sure a difficult situation isn’t made worse.”

This is the highest rating possible and the House of Mercy has earned this rating every year since 2009 when the program was established.

The Star Rating program is designed to be used as a tool to assist consumers in making informed decisions regarding care options for themselves or a loved one.

The Star Rating program provides consumers with information based on facility inspections by DHSR.

Gladys Marie Armstrong Baucom CHARLOTTE - Gladys Marie Armstrong Baucom was called home to her Heavenly Father on September 20, 2018, at Asbury Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Baucom was a native of Gaston County, born October 5, 1927, in Mount Holly, youngest child of the late John Stevenson Armstrong and Addie Pearl Lee Armstrong. She graduated from Mt. Holly High School in

1944 and from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1950.

She retired from Mercy Hospital in 1988, after 38 years as a Registered Nurse.

Gladys married Winfred Josiah Baucom of Charlotte in 1951. They were married 49½ years before he was called to his eternal home on July 31, 2000.

Gladys was an active member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church for many years, where she was a member of the Love Sunday School Class and the Christianaires Senior Choir.

Mrs. Baucom is survived by two sons, Barry Winfred Baucom and wife, Patty Rodgers, of Crestview Hills, KY, and Mark Timothy Baucom and wife, Judy, of Matthews; grandson, Jonathan Mark Baucom and wife, Alison, of Raleigh; granddaughter, Ashleigh Marie Baucom of Matthews; two great-grandsons, Anderson Josiah Baucom and Lewis Jon Baucom, both of Raleigh; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and her husband Winfred, Gladys was preceded in death by

We are inviting everyone back for this great celebration of one worship service together in our sanctuary. Who is my neighbor?

What comes to mind when you think of neighbors? Are neighbors just those who live near us, perhaps on our street? In times past people knew their neighbors and were close to those nearby.

One day Jesus was asked by a man who is neighbor was, and Jesus gave him a very well-known response.

Luke 10:25-37 tells us of a lawyer who asked Jesus what he must do to have eternal life. Jesus asked him what the law said, and he quoted from Deuteronomy, noting we are to love God with our everything, and our neighbor as ourselves. The man asked Jesus who his neighbor was.

Jesus told him a story of a man walking from Jerusalem to Jericho. On the way, the man was attacked, robbed, and left for dead. While the man lay beaten on the side of the road, a priest came by.

Music Fest to feature Americana bands at DSBG Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden’s Fall 2018 Lost Hollow Music Fest on Oct. 13 and 14 will feature one of Nashville’s most highly regarded session musicians who is currently touring with the Zac Brown Band, a talented group of musicians who bring their special genrebusting brand of music from San Francisco, and more.

The event is an annual celebration of Americana music that brings together local, regional and national artists in the most unique performance venue around.

The festival will kick off on Saturday, Oct. 13 with PJ Brunson at 12 p.m. followed

by Sinners & Saints at 2 p.m. and headliner Front Country at 4 p.m. The festival continues on Sunday, Oct. 14 with Carolina Sonrise at 12 p.m., David Childers & the Serpents at 2 p.m. and Darrell Scott at 4 p.m. In addition to this fantastic lineup of topnotch performers and family fun, enjoy a bite from food trucks, beverages in the Beer Garden, the Garden scenery and more.

The Garden is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The festival is free with general Garden admission. EMS teaching CPR and Stop the Bleed at high school football games Gaston County EMS aims to increase the survivability of life threatening events related to cardiac arrest and life threatening hemorrhage.

With the public’s help and willingness to learn two very simple life-saving skills, EMS believes iy can make a significant impact in the lives of those experiencing these events prior to arrival of EMS professionals.

In cooperation with Gaston County Schools, Gaston County EMS will be teaching Hands-Only CPR and Stop the Bleed at several high school football games this fall. The goal is to train 1000 spectators throughout the season at selected football games. Give EMS 5 minutes and learn how to save a life.

The first event was held on Thursday September 13th at the South Point @ Stuart Cramer game. EMS enjoyed this experience and looks forward

to teaching these lifesaving skills to many more people throughout the high school football season.

Below is a list of games at which EMS plans to set up these stations. If you are planning on attending any of these games, EMS hopes you will stop by and learn to save the life of a friend or loved one.

I was out of town trying to return home before hurricane Florence hit our shores. I was not worried about finding food in the stores.

I thought no one would be interested in the type of food I eat. When I arrived home, I stopped by the local Walmart in Belmont. I looked for my usual whole pineapple in the produce department. When I could find none, I figured they moved it to another location.

I asked the produce worker, and she replied, “I am sorry we are totally out of the whole pineapple.” Really! You are actually out of the whole pineapple! Who buys up the whole pineapple?

Out of curiosity I walked each aisle of the store and saw empty spaces. I ran into another shopper. He asked, “Are you ready for Florence?” He continued telling me he witnessed a fight in the store. Two people were fighting over the last bottle of water. I thought to myself, “Disaster can bring out the best in some and sadly the worse in others.”

As I reflected on the question, “Are you ready for Florence” another question came to mind. Are you ready? Are you prepared? Not for a hurricane, but for Jesus.

Matthew tells the parable of ten bridesmaids who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five were wise, and five were foolish. The bridesmaids did not know when the bridegroom would arrive. The wise were prepared with oil in their lamps while the foolish were without oil. While the bridegroom delayed, they all became drowsy. But finally, the day came when he arrived. The bridesmaids without oil ran around in a panic asking for the wise to share their oil. When they realized it would not be enough they ran to the dealers I am sure buying up all the oil on the shelf.

What happened when they returned?

“Later the other virgins also came, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open up for us.’ But he answered, ‘Truly I say to you, I do not know you.’ Be on alert then, for you do not know the day nor the hour.” Matthew 25:11-13 NASB. I often wonder why panic sets in when our

meteorologist announces a light dusting of snow. I do not understand the panic that transforms us into raving wolves fighting over peanut butter or the last bot- Rev. Angela Pleasants tle of water. We also learn from Matthew’s parable that we must be spiritually prepared to meet Jesus. We are waiting with all of creation for his coming, but we must be prepared. We prepare ourselves by responding to his invitation to salvation and the regeneration of our hearts renewed by the Holy Spirit. Daily, we should seek to be imitators of God’s love. As we live moment by moment growing in God’s grace, we also become fully equipped for Jesus return.

“Behold, days are coming, declares the Lord God, when I will send a famine on the land. Not a famine for bread or a thirst for water, but rather for hearing the words of the Lord. People will stagger from sea to sea and from the north even to the east; they will go to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, but they will not find it.” Amos 8:11-12 NASB. When we hear of imminent natural disasters, we run to stores and buy up all the food.

When a store is out of water and staple items, we stagger from store to store but find nothing on the shelves. Likewise, on that final day, the idols we have erected as god’s in our life will not provide comfort. Don’t become so preoccupied with the material and forget the eternal. Don’t wait till it is too late and we stagger seeking a word from God. Seek the Lord now while he may be found. Hunger and thirst for God’s righteousness and you will be filled.

Cramer falls short in 28-23 loss to Kings Mountain

The Big South 3A Conference is one of the toughest leagues in the state. You have to bring your “A” game every week if you want to come out on top. If you get an opportunity to put the other team away you do it. Stuart Cramer

learned that lesson the hard way in a 28-23 loss to Kings Mountain.

The Storm had their chances against Kings Mountain, but they just couldn’t capitalize on them.

Things started tough for Cramer with the Mountaineers racking up an early 28-14 halftime lead. A Luke

As the third quarter got underway the Storm picked up the pace. The Storm defense came alive and Cramer seriously hampered the Kings Mountain offense.

eers from scoring in the second half. With the Cramer “D” trying to clamp things down on their end, the Storm offense was trying to get Cramer back into the game.

However, the going was tough.

The only scoring of the third corner came off of a 37-yard field goal by Cramer kicker Austin Browning.

Kings Mountain held a 28-17 lead at the end of three.

In the fourth quarter, Luke Carpenter hit pay dirt again when he threw his second touchdown of the night when he hit Demarrick Floyd on a 15-yard strike.

Bessemer City holds back Raptors 18-8

Lackluster play and a bit of taking things for granted cost Mountain Island Charter School football dearly last week. In their first Southern Piedmont 1A Conference game of the season the Raptors lost to the Bessemer City Yellow Jackets 18-8.

The Yellow Jackets really didn’t do anything spectacular. They just took advantage of what they had and made the most of it.

Bessemer City got on the board first in the second quarter when they scooped up a Mountain Island fumble and ran it back 73 yards for the score. The Yellow Jackets PAT attempt was off and Bessemer City was up 6-0. Mountain Island responded when Elijah Burris broke off a 40-yard touchdown. The Raptors PAT attempt failed as well and the score was tied up 6-6.

Not long after Burris’s touchdown MI turned the ball over again. Working with a short field, Bessemer City

capitalized on it and scored.

The Bessemer City PAT was no good and both teams went into the locker room with the Yellow Jackets leading 12-6.

The third quarter came and went with neither team being able to make any kind of progress. In the fourth quarter the Yellow Jackets scored off of a 50-yard run.

Another failed PAT put the Yellow Jackets up 18-6. The Raptors final score of the game came when they backed the Bessemer City punter out of the end zone for safety.

However, by then the damage was done and MI wasn’t going to be able to salvage a win. Mountain Island head coach Robert Washington didn’t mince words when he described how the Raptors played. “Real sloppy,” Washington said. “We didn’t execute.”

Another thing that hurt the Raptors was the fact that they were going up against a 2-3 Bessemer City team that was a lot better than they thought.

It looked like MI players just didn’t see the Yellow Jackets

as a threat.

“We took Bessemer City for granted,” coach Washington said. “We looked more at their record than the actual team.”

Based on stats MI should have won big. The Raptors had 324 yards of total offense compared to the Yellow Jackets 106 yards. The difference came with what each team did with the opportunities that presented themselves. Bessemer City cashed their chips in. MI did not.

There were some noteworthy performances for the Raptors. Running back Elijah Burris once again had a great game with 194 yards.

The MI defense also had a good outing.

“The defense is stepping up,” coach Washington added. “Both scores came off of offensive turnovers.”

Coach Washington believes the 3-2 Raptors will regroup before they take on Union Academy this week.

“Our boys are motivated they needed this wake up call.” Washington noted.

East Gaston grad earns Navy League Foundation Scholarship The Navy League Foundation, the Navy League’s premier program to support the children of the men and women of the sea services through scholarships, has announced its 2018-2019 scholarship award winners.

The recipients are selected through a rigorous application process, taking into

account student academic achievement, aptitude test scores and essay response questions.

Winner of the Rockwell Collins Scholarship is Trevor Larter, a recent graduate from East Gaston High School in Mount Holly where he participated in soccer and Awana, an international evangelical

Christian volunteer organization. He earned Junior Marshall status for ranking in the top 10 of his junior class, and he earned the Highest Academic Average award in five of his classes. He is attending LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas, and is majoring in mechanical engineering.

Belmont Abbey announces Wheeler Center improvements Belmont Abbey College has announced plans to dramatically upgrade the Wheeler Athletic Center’s Sports Performance facility. The new design includes customized weight lifting equipment (pictured), new flooring, and a 1,350 sq. ft. artificial turf functional training area that will serve 31 varsity and eight developmental men’s and women’s athletic programs and over 800 students.

The project is scheduled to be completed by the start of the spring semester in January 2019. There will be twelve new weightlifting stations with customized racks, benches, bars, and plates, branded dumbbells, a new 30-yard turf sprinting and

plyometric area, and many more features to enhance the performance and experience of Belmont Abbey College students.

Bike Fest 2018 is September 29, 2018 Gaston County Parks & Recreation is hosting BikeFest 2018 at Poston Park on September 29th from 10am to 2pm.

Gaston Schools Good News for September Gaston County Schools received a pickup truck load of school supplies from Gastonia Nissan’s fifth annual “Fill the Frontier” collection drive. School social workers visited the dealership to collect the supplies, which were distributed to their students.

Employees from six Dallas area schools – North Gaston, W.C. Friday, Carr, Costner, Highland, and Woodhill – were treated to a back-to-school breakfast on August 24 at Rankin Lake Baptist Church. Now in its 14th year, the breakfast serves as the church’s “thank you” to teachers and other school employees for their hard work and commitment to ensuring the success of students.

Sherwood Elementary was recognized by the N.C. Department of Instruction as a PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) Green Ribbon School.

Sherwood Elementary received donations of school supplies from Myers Memorial United Methodist Church and First Presbyterian Church of Gastonia.

Forestview High School teacher Sabine SchmidRankin received the GoetheInstitut/AATG Certificate of Merit from the American Association of Teachers of German for her efforts to advance the teaching of the German language in the United States. She will be honored later this year during the annual conference of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.

W.C. Friday Middle School dedicated its softball field in honor of former principal Crystal Houser, who is now the principal at Forestview High School. Houser was instrumental in kicking off a fundraising campaign to build the new softball field in 2013.

Holbrook Middle School held a beautification day before the start of school to spruce up the campus. Board of Education members Dot Cherry and Lee Dedmon supported the project.

Holbrook Middle School eighth graders are the first students in the school district to learn to use two Google Chrome applications for stop motion animation. Instructional technology facilitators Jason Mammano and Lisa Montgomery helped the students with the activity.

Page Primary conducted a school beautification program. Volunteers planted flowers and cleaned up the school grounds. Also, the school had 79 students to attend a summertime reading

and ice cream party.

Lowell Elementary held its annual beautification day before the start of school that involved many volunteers and two Boy Scout troops.

The PTO received donations from Ford’s Nursery, Food Lion, and Home Depot for the campus cleanup project.

Robinson Elementary students Caroline Suber, Max Willis, Jane Willis, Ella Queen, Mattie Queen and Kate Queen sold lemonade in their neighborhood and raised more than $500 to purchase school supplies for students.

Woodhill Elementary principal Loretta Reed was presented an American flag in recognition of the school hosting the annual Gaston Family Health Services Back-to-School Bash. In addition, the school received a donation of supplies from Daimler Corporation.

Belmont Central Elementary received a $4,000 grant from Times Oil Company for the purchase of a mascot costume and padded wall panels in the gymnasium.

Cherryville Elementary created an outdoor pavilion area with picnic tables thanks to contributions from Eaker Enterprises, Fleetnet America, Beam Construction, and the school’s PTO. The Pinewood Elementary PTO received funds from National Gypsum to purchase a book for each classroom. The PTO selected “A Porcupine Named Fluffy” and distributed a copy of the book to the classes on National Read A Book Day. Tryon Elementary received school supplies and backpacks from the following individuals/churches: Breann Bridges, Ellen Howell, Stacy Hoover, Erika Nixon, FSM Heating & Air, Elaine Robinson, Jewell Vinson, Arrowood Baptist Church, Concord United Methodist Church, Maranatha Baptist Church, Sunnyside Baptist Church, and Webb’s Chapel Baptist Church.

SPECIAL EVENTS AND PROGRAM SUPERVISOR: Employment Advertisement The Cramerton Parks and Recreation Department is currently seeking qualified applicants for the full-time position of Special Events and Program Supervisor. This position will plan, promote, and supervise all town sponsored events, and assist community groups in planning events and festivals to be held on town property. This position will oversee Cramerton Recreation Pool daily operations, swimming lessons, and special pool events. Work is performed independently under the general supervision of the Parks and Recreation Director.

Work also includes but is not limited to planning and organization of all non-sports related programs, camps and classes, design and creation of all flyers, and publicizing all events and programs. This position is responsible for inventorying event and pool supplies, recommending program and event changes and improvements, training part-time and seasonal staff, soliciting volunteers and vendors, and performing other tasks as assigned by the Parks and Recreation Director.

An ideal candidate will have a minimum of two years experience in special event or aquatics programming and a four-year degree from an accredited college or university with a major in recreation, physical education, sports management, or related field; or any equivalent combination of experience and training. Candidate must have certifications in Lifeguarding, Advanced First Aid, and CPR or must acquire the certifications in the first six months of employment, and have a valid driver’s license. Certifications for Water Safety Instructor, Certified Pool Operator and Certified Parks and Recreation Professional are preferred.

Salary is dependent upon qualifications. The town provides a competitive benefits package.
