Cramerton once had an airport too By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
Editor’s note: Stories in the May 7 and May 21 editions of the BannerNews profiling small airstrips that once operated in Belmont and Mt. High schools announce graduation plan for the Class of 2020 Gaston County Schools will provide seniors in the Class of 2020 an opportunity to cross the graduation stage to receive their diploma, but the format will be different than a traditional ceremony because of concerns related to the coronavirus pandemic. The principals from the county’s 11 traditional high schools – Ashbrook, Bessemer City, Cherryville, Stuart W. Cramer, East Gaston,
Forestview, Gaston Early College, Highland, Hunter Huss, North Gaston, and South Point – as well as the principals of Webb Street School and Warlick Academy came together to create a graduation plan that aligns with the results of a survey taken by approximately 2,500 students, employees, parents, and others. The plan also meets social distancing expectations and health and
safety guidelines. The survey participants were asked to rank the most important aspects of a graduation ceremony. They identified the following as top priorities: seniors being able to wear their cap and gown; seniors being able to walk across the stage to receive their diploma; and seniors being able to have family/ close friends in attendance. Belmont Public Works building renovation on track By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
The major remodeling project on the City of Belmont Public Works building at 1401 Catawba St. is nearly complete. The 1980s era building, which has formerly occupied by Woodlawn Mills and Beltex Corp. has been used by Belmont as its public works headquarters for the past several years and a major remodeling project has transformed it from a huge concrete cavern into a modern, state of the art, efficient, spacious, and comfortable complex for the city’s business and its administrative staff. The building has a lot of space including 55K sq. ft. that will retain its use as a warehouse for city equipment, supplies, and vehicles, as well as a 21K sq. ft., three level portion that will serve as the administrative office
complex side of things. According to Public Works director David Isenhour, things left to do on the building includes finishing up the sheetrock, accent painting, laying carpet and tile, and some wiring. “Everything is on schedule and the work should be done late June, early July.” Isenhour said. “We hope to have the project finished and everyone in their new offices by late August.” The project included building an elevator tower that will run on the outside of the front of the building. The tower will feature a large City of Belmont logo. “The elevator was a challenge,” said Isenhour. The same end of the building that the elevator is on will also have a huge, three story glass wall. The upper two levels of the building will be the new home of the city’s admin-
istrative departments such as city clerk, city manager, planning and zoning, billing, and customer service. The offices will get new furniture and equipment. There will be a nice lunch room for employees as well as a kitchen and lockers. Windows have been cut in the side of the building facing Kevin Loftin Riverfront Park and the Catawba River, affording employees a sweeping and spectacular view of the water. The lower level will be home to the Parks and Rec. Department. The lower level will be a also be a temporary location for city council meetings. There will be room for about 300 seats unlike the current situation where council meetings at city hall are generally standing room only. “The city council will hold its meetings in the new See PUBLIC WORKS, Page 2

AIRPORT From Page 1 Perhaps the most interesting thing that Craig had to say about the airport involved Morris Field which was a WWII Army Air Corps pilot training base where Charlotte-Douglas International Airport is now. A street there today is named Morris Field Drive. “The pilots would fly P40 fighters from Charlotte to the Cramerton airport where they would practice short field landings and takeoffs,” Craig said. “My uncle told me once there was a lady that was washing clothes outside and they dived down in the planes and it scared her so bad she laid on the ground.” According to Craig, a P40 crashed nearby. “It happened where For-
estview High is now,” he said. “It hit behind where the ballfield is. My daddy said he ran over to the site and the front part of the plane was buried fifteen feet in the ground.” Later Craig revisited the Cramerton strip. “It had become a horse pasture,” he said. Cramerton resident Ted Reece also shared a couple of anecdotes about the strip and two Cramerton residents/ pilots who were said to have used it and who would later become famous. “J.B. ‘Killer’ Cain and his sister flew from there,” Reece said. “One time Killer flew down the railroad tracks while E.B. Hudson was preaching at the Baptist Church.” Killer went on to be a WWII Navy ace and commander of the USS Yorktown. His sister Pauline Cain
served in WWII as well. “She applied to the U.S. Army Air Corps but was turned down,” Reece said “She went to Canada and flew for the Royal Canadian Air Force.” The person with the closest connection to the Cramerton airport is Warren Cramer, grandson of Stuart Cramer. Here’s what Warren, who lives in Florida, recalled about the strip. “I have some limited information regarding that airfield,” he said. “George Cramer Sr. was my father, and he used that field regularly in the 1930s. In fact I think the airfield was built by him with crews from Cramerton Mills. At that time he had a fine Cabin Waco biplane aircraft. After the War, Dad had a beautiful Twin Beech, which he kept at the Charlotte airport into the 1960s. Dad learned to

I believe Springs also flew into the Cramerton field on occasion. I think that General George Patton also flew there, a time or two, as he visited Cramerton often in the ‘30s. I know that Dad took Patton up in his aircraft a few times. I recall a very few tales regarding the airfield and early flying, which I heard from my Dad.” Well, there you have it, another story about the golden age of aviation in our area and some of the person-

On Wednesday, May 20, 2020 the Greater Gaston Development Corporation (GGDC) & the Gaston Regional Chamber of Commerce (GRC) announced their intent to merge the two organizations. The resulting combined entity will be positioned to shape, influence, and fuel a coordinated public/private economic development engine for Gaston County. Since last fall, executive leaders from the GGDC and GRC have been exploring the merits of this merger. Each group’s unique organizational strengths and ex-
pertise, as well as proven compatibility, demonstrated a clear opportunity to converge around a united purpose and strategic focus. The combined enterprise will be outcome-driven, achieving results through an emphasis on communications & marketing, advocacy, workforce development, and business support. In a joint statement, GRC Chairman Chris Peek and GGDC Chairman Greg Botner stated, “The Gaston business community has long deserved unity among economic development partners to drive value for Gas-
ton County businesses and citizens. In recent years, the GGDC and the Gaston Regional Chamber have enjoyed a positive partnership and a strong working relationship. This merger represents the strategic alignment and bold private sector action necessary to advance Gaston County’s economic vitality.” After completing a period of additional due diligence, the boards of both organizations are expected to vote at the end of the summer on officially merging the two organizations.

Library curbside pickup and appointment services have resumed As of Tuesday, May 26, the Main Library in Garrison Boulevard in Gastonia is offering curbside pickup and appointment access to computer services. County leaders closed the libraries to the public on Tuesday, March 17 in concert with the closing of most other county facilities. Now the libraries are reopening some services in line with the county’s Phase A of reopening. While the buildings themselves are still closed, up to 10 people at a time can schedule appointments to utilize computers inside the library’s Main Branch. Those individuals will have a temperature check and health screening before being allowed to use the computers. Staff will be subject to the same temperature check and health screening that is part of Gaston County’s plan for all of its facilities. Appointments will be for one-hour increments and each person may reserve no
more than one per day. Those appointments must be booked in advance. This aligns with Board of Commissioners Chairman Tracy Philbeck’s desire to see the county provide aid to residents who are trying to apply for unemployment or looking for work, but lack the resources at home to do so. Library director Laurel Morris and her team have been hard at work over the last several weeks crafting a plan that will keep the public and staff safe while also resuming the offering of muchdesired services. “Our staff is really excited to open back up some of our services to the community,” Morris said. “We know with many parents, students and seniors still primarily staying at home, the books and materials we provide are all the more in demand.” The library’s Main Branch underwent a deep static cleaning on Friday, May 22, before staff re-entered to

The curbside pickup service began at the Main Branch on May 26th, and at the branch libraries not under construction will begin on June 1. Curbside pickups of held materials will also be scheduled in advance by calling the library. Library employees will not take library orders curbside, so as to protect staff and residents and allow for proper social distancing. Starting on May 26th, the library began encouraging patrons to begin returning checked-out materials via the outdoor book drops. Residents can arrange for document printing, tax forms and received faxes for curbside pickup by calling the library in advance. Some of the library’s typical offerings – such as storytime and its summer reading program – will continue, but in a virtual capacity. Curbside pickup of summer reading packets begins June 1st at all libraries not closed due to construction. More information about construction schedules at some of the branch libraries, as well as ways to make appointments for computer use, can be found online at GastonLibrary.org.

“Our principals did an excellent job of taking the survey results into consideration and coming up with a plan that incorporates what our seniors believe are key to making their graduation as meaningful as possible,” said Dr. Cristi Bostic, executive director for high schools. “We want to thank everyone who completed the survey and provided their input. It has been very helpful as our high school principals have worked to develop ways to recognize, honor, and celebrate the Class of 2020.” Beginning June 1, each high school will schedule various times for seniors to participate in graduation. In a limited capacity, students will come to the school auditorium or gymnasium, walk across the stage individually when their name is called, receive their diploma from the principal, and have a photograph taken. Each student can have as many as eight family members/friends watching from the audience. Family members will exit the auditorium or gymnasium once their student walks across the stage. The format adheres to social distancing guidelines and large gathering restrictions based on guidance for graduation from the N.C. Department of Public Instruction, N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, and the
Office of the Governor. “While all of us are disappointed that we cannot hold a traditional graduation ceremony for our seniors, we believe the plan for our high schools is a good alternative that will put the Class of 2020 in the spotlight while following the health restrictions that are in place because of the coronavirus,” said Gary Ford, principal of South Point High School in Belmont. “We are so proud of our seniors, and we hope everyone in the community will find a way to join us in saluting the Class of 2020 and bringing attention to their many outstanding accomplishments.”

North Carolina moves to Safer at Home Phase 2 Governor Roy Cooper and North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mandy Cohen announced last Wednesday that North Carolina would move into Safer At Home Phase 2 of lifting COVID-19 restrictions on Friday, May 22 at 5 pm. After two weeks in Phase 1, the state’s overall
key indicators remain stable but the continued increases in daily case counts signal a need to take a more modest step forward in Phase 2 than originally envisioned. “North Carolina is using the data to guide our decisions about when to lift COVID-19 restrictions, and overall our key indicators remain stable,”
said Governor Cooper. “Safer At Home Phase 2 is another careful step forward, and we have to continue taking this virus seriously to prevent a dangerous spike in infections.” “From the beginning, North Carolinians have joined together to confront this crisis. We need to rely upon one
Gaston College helped Andrew Molby fulfill his goal to be a first responder Andrew Molby, who will graduate from Gaston College in May, overcame learning disabilities to successfully complete the Emergency Medical Sciences program and earn an Associate in Applied Science degree. Currently employed with Gaston County EMS, Molby recently transitioned from a part-time to a full-time position with the service. “Andrew is the finest student I have had the opportunity to assist in training as a paramedic,” said Gillilan. “We gave him a preliminary Paramedic Exam and he passed while still having another semester of school to complete. Not only is Andrew academically gifted, he truly cares about people and I am proud to say he will be one of our graduates.” Molby was tested for learning disabilities when his parents saw that he was struggling with schoolwork that other first graders in public school found easy. He was diagnosed with dyslexia and dysgraphia, which affected his spelling, writing, reading and ability to get his thoughts down on paper. He was homeschooled through high school. “When I started at Gaston College, I didn’t think my chances of success were high,” Molby said, “but everyone was very understanding and provided valuable support in my academic pursuits.” In high school, Molby was torn between becoming a police officer or a paramedic.
Andrew Molby, Gaston College Class of 2020, during his field internship with Gaston County Emergency Medical Services. “Ever since I was young, he said, “I wanted to be a first responder. The idea of not being in an office and responding to emergencies sounded amazing to me.” He made the decision to become a paramedic because he enjoyed learning about science, especially anatomy and physiology, and about medicine in general. Working in EMS gives him opportunities to help people. “Being a source of stability and hope for a patient is a privilege I do not take lightly,” Molby said, “especially considering that many patients are having one of the worst days of their life—if not the worst. Personally providing this type of assistance to somebody is something that is hard to rival.” Molby hopes to transfer to Western Carolina University to pursue a Bachelor’s
in Emergency Medical Science and is weighing a few different career options. “I am considering opportunities to serve in a medical role in the military,” he said. “I am also considering going past a bachelor’s degree to obtain a higher level of medical education. The two things I know for sure are that I am going to stay in the emergency medical field and, whatever I choose to do, I want to be able to look back and say I had a positive impact on the people I got to serve.” For the short term, his goal is to become a fully functioning paramedic at Gaston Emergency Medical Services. For more information about the Gaston College Emergency Medical Services program, go to www.gaston. edu/public-safety/emergencymedical-science-associatedegree.
another to practice the three Ws as we begin leaving our homes more. When we wear a face covering, wait six feet apart, and wash our hands often, we are showing we care for our loved ones and neighbors,” said Dr. Mandy Cohen. Based on the metrics laid out in April by Governor Cooper and Secretary Cohen, North Carolina is evaluating a combination of the data from the following categories that shows the state is stable but still has increasing daily new lab confirmed case counts. Trajectory in COVID-Like Illness (CLI) Surveillance Over 14 Days- North Carolina’s syndromic surveillance trend for COVID-like illness is decreasing. Trajectory of Lab-Confirmed Cases Over 14 DaysNorth Carolina’s trajectory of lab-confirmed cases is increasing. Trajectory in Percent of Tests Returning Positive Over 14 Days- North Carolina’s trajectory in percent of tests returning positive has been decreasing and is starting to level. Trajectory in Hospitalizations Over 14 Days- North Carolina’s trajectory of hospitalizations is level. In addition to these metrics, the state continues build-
ing capacity to be able to adequately respond to an increase in virus spread. These areas include: Laboratory Testing- North Carolina has more than doubled the daily testing rate with more than 8,000 tests completed daily on average. More than 300 testing sites across North Carolina are posted on the DHHS testing information website. Tracing Capability- The Carolina Community Tracing Collaborative has already hired more than 150 new contact tracers adding to the 250 already working at our local health departments. Personal Protective Equipment - Supply chains continue to improve. What’s included in Safer At Home Phase 2? Phase 2 lifts the Stay At Home order moving into a Safer At Home recommendation, especially for people at high risk for serious illness. Teleworking is also urged when possible. Mass gathering limits in Phase 2 will be no more than 10 people indoors or 25 people outdoors in most circumstances. These limits apply to the following: event venues; conference centers; stadiums and sports arenas; amphitheaters; and groups at parks or
beaches. Some businesses will remain closed in Phase 2 including: bars; night clubs; gyms and indoor fitness facilities; indoor entertainment venues such as movie theaters, and bowling alleys. Certain businesses will be open at limited capacity with other requirements and recommendations including: restaurants at 50% dine-in capacity with distancing and cleaning requirements; personal care businesses, including salons and barbers, at 50% capacity with distancing and cleaning requirements; pools at 50% capacity with distancing and cleaning requirements. Employees of personal care businesses will be required to wear face coverings. Childcare facilities, day camps and overnight camps will be open with enhanced cleaning and screening requirements. Retail businesses allowed to open in Phase 1 at 50% capacity will continue at that level. Public health recommendations are provided for worship services to practice enhanced social distancing and other cleaning and hygiene practices. The Safer At Home Phase 2 runs through at least Friday, June 26.

Remember Rev. Trent Rankin Salvation Church, Gastonia, NC salvationchurchnc.org pastortrent@salvationchurchnc.org
This week we celebrated Memorial Day. Memorial Day has been lost somewhat in the shuffle this year, as much of the news coverage has been concerning the Coronavirus pandemic. However, this is a day that we can never forget. Memorial Day honors those who gave their very best for their nation. We remember those in our armed forces who gave their lives that we might be free. This is a time of remembrance. It is a time to honor those who gave so much. In John 15:13, Jesus said to His disciples “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends” (NKJV). Jesus said these words the night before He went to the cross. As He gathered with His disciples in the upper room, He told them that He would soon die. Jesus died for each of us, His friends, on the cross, and He lives today. The death of Jesus was vicarious, in our place. It was our sin, our failures, that led Jesus to the cross. He scarified Himself for us, in our place, bearing our punishment. We remember this week. We remember the lives of those who had so much ahead of them, yet they gave their lives in the service of their
nation. We honor the sacrifice of those who selflessly died for the freedoms of others, people they would never meet. It is hard for us to understand such love. Rev. Trent Tankin We cannot understand such sacrifice, yet we are indebted and grateful forever to these selfless heroes. Such sacrifice, such love, reflects the love Jesus has for us. As we remember and honor our faithful service men and women, we can never forget what Jesus means to us. May we live each day honoring the sacrifice of many. We can never forget, or take for granted, what others have done for us. Today may we always appreciate the freedoms we have been given by the service of so many brave soldiers. May we also appreciate the freedom from sin we have been given through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We live in freedom today, we live in the greatest nation in the world, provided by the sacrifice of so many. We can also live in the freedom Jesus offers today, if we will trust in Him. Today, will you trust in Jesus? No greater love exists, than the love Jesus has shown us. This week remember those we honor on Memorial Day, and remember Jesus. He gave His best for us!

Christian Rios will apply knowledge gained from Gaston College Christian Rios, the outgoing secretary of the Gaston College Student Government Association, wanted to get involved with the SGA so he could be a liaison between the students and the College. “I understand the frustration and complaints amongst students on things they wish they could change or have amended for a better experience,” he said. “Taking all this into mind helped me decide that if change were going to happen, it needed to start with someone who listens. This helped me address what concerns students had and make going to Gaston College a better experience.” Serving in a leadership position with the SGA gave Rios insight into how crucial and representative the organization is. “We have high expectations on our shoulders to represent the student and the College both on and off campus,” he said. “We need to be professional and
responsible, and to help those who need it whenever we can. The second, and arguably the most important, thing is how we have to make decisions that are best for the majority of our students which sometimes means compromising to Christian Rios make sure that the reer-wise, it’s been my dream outcome leaves the most stu- since I was a child to be a dents happy.” public defender,” he said. Pets of the Week Due to COVID-19, all adoptions will be done by applications. Once approved you will be contacted for a meet/greet and to complete the adoption. If interested in any of our pets, please EMAIL tricountyanimalrescue@yahoo. com for an application. Hey. My name is Chanel and I am a Chocolate and White Beagle. That is not dirt on my legs, it is brown ticking. I don’t get dirty! I am 2 years old and I’m a diva. I think there is a very special family out there that has just been waiting for me to get center stage. I love to play and will run for hours…then I drop. I love people, young and old. I do need a fenced yard because sometimes I forget and will chase a critter. I am 30 pounds, spayed, heartworm negative, current on vaccines and microchipped. So, if you have a fence and want a beautiful young lady to play with just send in that application. Remember to ask for Chanel. Well my name is Chuckie and I’m nothing like that doll that was in that bad movie. I am a sweet boy. I am a beagle mix and weigh 34 pounds. I had a dental just last month so my teeth are extra pretty. I will need to be the only dog because the other dogs are jealous of my beautiful appearance…just saying. I am neutered, current on vaccines and micro-chipped. If you want a sweet boy for walks in the park then I’m your man. Send that email in now and ask for Chuckie. I’ll be waiting. If you are looking for an addition to your family, please visit us on FaceBook at TriCounty Animal Rescue for details of many available pets ready for a new home. Pets and storm anxiety By Joann Hager There have been many storms lately with thunder and lightning which can be scary for some dogs/cats. To help keep them calm, here are a few tips to consider: Prepare the house. The house becomes your pets’ safety zone, so it’s important to prepare it properly. Keep some lights on. Keeping a light on will calm your pet and make him feel more secure, rather than being scared in a dark room. Dampen the noise. Close the curtains in the room and, if your animal is a caged one, cover up the cage in a thick blanket, but make sure it is breathable so your animal doesn’t suffocate. This will also help to stop the flashes of light affecting your pet. Plan to use familiar sounds to drown out the noise of the storm. Music from a stereo or turning on the TV are likely familiar sounds that can sooth your pet. Just make sure not to play these sounds too loud. Prepare the room. Select a suitable room where you can contain the pet for the duration of the storm. An inner room that is least impacted by the noise is ideal. If you have more than one pet, be sure they don’t mind being confined in the same room, or select several rooms for different pets. Make the room cozy. Put down familiar, clean bedding somewhere pleasant such as under a table, on or behind a chair, etc. Add some familiar chew toys, scratch pads, balls, etc., to keep your pets amused and distracted. Prepare yourself. In the desire to ease our pet’s pain, sometimes we can transfer our anxiety and upset to the pet. If you’ve prepared properly in advance, there is no need to feel upset and worried as you can be reassured about the safety of your pet. Provide food and hydra-
tion. Be sure to leave sufficient water and food for your pet in the confinement area. Many pets will be uneasy, or even frantic. If your pet has access to water, it will help calm him, and food supplied in your pet’s regular portion will make him feel like it’s a normal day. Keep an eye on your pet, and if possible, stay with her. Comfort her and talk to her. Be friendly but don’t fuss over her too much; this can increase her anxiety if she picks up on yours and can reward and encourage fearful behavior. Allow your pet to hide somewhere in the room if wished. Check on your pet after the storm. Reassure her once the storm is over. Let her have
free run of the house to see how she behaves before considering letting her return outside (it might be best to wait until morning, if possible). Check for signs of stress in your pet: For cats, signs of stress include running away, soiling the house, hiding away and refusing to eat. For dogs, signs of stress include barking a lot, running away, soiling the house, hiding and cowering, clinging to owners, whimpering, trembling and shaking, pacing and panting, and refusing to eat. If your pet is stressed, keep him indoors overnight. Keep a litter tray somewhere in the house, or walk a dog after the storm but don’t let him off his harness and be sure to stay with him the whole time.
Growing gas prices in Carolinas... Gas prices in the Carolinas are inching higher as most of the region pushes towards reopening, causing a growing number of people to hit the road. Gasoline demand is now only 30 percent lower than a year ago and even with prices expected to push more expensive this month, motorists will still see some low Memorial Day gas prices. “Gas prices in the Carolinas increased last week for the first time in nearly 80 days,” said Tiffany Wright, AAA spokesperson. On the week, North Carolina’s average is four cents more expensive at $1.71, three cents more expensive on the month and 92 cents cheaper on the year. South Carolina’s average is three cents more expensive at $1.60, one cent more expensive on the month and 86 cents cheaper on the year. At the start of the Memorial Day work week, the national gas price average is $1.87 and motorists can
expect gas prices to continue to push more expensive, possibly hitting the $2 mark in the next few weeks. This is due to an increase in demand as states begin to re-open. The switchover from winter-blend gasoline to summer-blend typically also causes gas prices to spike during the summer driving season, but that will likely not be the case this year due to the impact of COVID-19 on demand and crude oil prices. Crude prices increased last week amid growing market optimism that crude demand continues to rebound as more states re-open and demand for gasoline has grown in recent weeks. For this week, crude prices may continue to rise if the production reduction agreement for May and June 2020 between the OPEC and other major crude exporters, including Russia, is helping to rebalance the global oil market as demand remains low due to COVID-19.

Meditations Status isn’t everything I am excited to begin the journey as a certified Spiritual Director. A Spiritual Director is a spiritual friend or guide who journey alongside others, helping them to focus, listen, and live into the move of the Spirit of God in a person’s life that the person may grow in their relationship with God. I have a well-meaning friend who said, “You don’t need a certification; you should get your Doctor of Ministry.” My friend was putting more status on having a doctorate as opposed to certification. I shared this story with my colleague and friend. Years ago, I was in classes at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC, working toward my Doctor of Ministry when I heard the Lord speak to my heart saying, “I did not call you to this area of work.” I realized I was pursuing this degree because it is what others expected of me. Years later is when I received direction from the Lord that I was to answer the call to Spiritual Direction along with my pastoral leadership. There is nothing wrong with having a Doctor of Ministry versus a certification. The problem is when we place more priority on a person based on their circumstances, outward appearances, and position rather than the person. When we draw conclusions based on the outward circumstances of a person and not to their intrinsic value, and so prefer one who is wealthy or powerful to another who does not have these qualities, we are showing favoritism. When we show favoritism, we are devaluing the worth of a person. When we devalue the worth of a person, we devalue a creation of God. In our world culture, we show favoritism based on titles, wealth, and even in religious life by the size of congregations. We know that working in an environment can change a person where they may take on the characteristics of the environment. Living in a world culture where numerical status is the model
can impact how we live and react to others. Therefore, we can easily lose ourselves in the Rev. Angela Pleasants world’s culture. When we re- District ceive affirmation Superintendent because our in- of Catawba Valley come bracket may Methodist Churches increase, our conversations change to our overly busy schedules, name dropping, and the size of our congregations, which soon determines our worth. James gives a warning on mirroring the standards of the surrounding culture. “My brethren, do not hold your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ with an attitude of personal favoritism. For if a man comes into your assembly with a gold ring and dressed in fine clothes, and there also comes in a poor man in dirty clothes, and you pay special attention to the one who is wearing the fine clothes, and say, ‘You sit here in a good place,’ and you say to the poor man, ‘You stand over there, or sit down by my footstool,’ have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil motives? But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.” James 2:1-4; 9 NASB. I challenge us to find our worth not in our outward status, but in God. God shows how valuable we were when he gave us his Son, Jesus, who offered his life for our life. “For while we were helpless, at the right time, Christ died for the ungodly. For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:6-8 NASB.

pated in some, and how I’ve minimized the importance of honor through my ignorance. How did this happen to me? I lost track of the fact that, as Bevere Dennis Siracusa points out, ALL authority is set in place by God and by grumbling against authority figures I don’t agree with, I am dishonoring God, dishonoring that leader, and losing a reward myself! There is no reason to reteach what John Bevere has so aptly written. What is vital is that honor has relevance everywhere. All authority figures, parents, children, social settings, church, and especially God all need to be honored. When I look at the Banner newspaper I’ve been privileged to write for over 2 ½ years, I am regularly astonished at what Alan Hodge orchestrates. I am equally impressed with the depth and breadth of the ministry efforts invested by two other writers; Tony Marciano and Angela Pleasants. I need to honor them in prayer regularly. They are all special people and our community is incredibly enriched because of them. Bottom Line: God’s light is resplendent throughout the bible and Honor’s Reward highlights much of that valuable truth. Get the book, I dare you! Open your heart, and draw the incredible value God has for you within it and within God’s bible pages. Your life and its path will be transformed! And with Father’s Day coming up, let’s honor our earthly fathers tangibly or in our memory; in doing so we will honor God too.

By Dennis Siracusa This morning, in the quiet of my living room I noticed several God provided light sources. Lit candles, deck lights, and small 6 watt lamps strategically placed throughout our home. Even muted lights on the microwave display, smoke alarms, and coffee maker make life more convenient. Yes, God provided natural and manufactured light is awesome, helpful, and thought provoking but how about other heavenly light; supernatural light? I have breakfast Thursday mornings with several close friends. In the process of our breakfasts we have all recognized how much work the Lord still needs to do on all of us; how much of the world’s ways we have each absorbed, and how much we still have to learn about God’s ways which are true, just, and immutable. When we consider our morning prayers, my friends and I know we have a lot to discuss with the Lord, confess and repent of; and plenty of spiritual wisdom and light to request from the Lord as we navigate our lives each day. This week we pondered a most remarkable and enlightening book written by John Bevere; Honor’s Reward, and the light the Lord provides us from it and the bible will enlarge our earthly lives and position us purposefully for eternity with Him in heaven. Two things are immediately clear from Bevere’s book. Honoring one another is an awareness and skill set we all must learn. Second, our world is so overrun with egregious dishonor it staggers the imagination. I’m broken hearted over how I have so casually dismissed dishonor I see, sinfully partici-

South Point High recognizes its Tennis Team Seniors Dharmin Patel: Dharmin was a three year starter for the Boys Tennis Team. He excelled in both singles and doubles. His hard work and dedication led to him earning the number one spot in singles by his Senior year and a regional birth in Doubles last year as a Junior. He might not have been the biggest in stature but he had one of the biggest hearts on the team. Dharmin was selected AllConference his Junior year and will be attending NC State University this fall. Grayson Dunbar: Grayson played three years for South Point tennis. When his Senior year rolled around, he was our number two singles player. As a Junior he was in our top six and also made it to Regionals. Grayson made everybody around him better. His competitive spirit was witnessed every match and every practice. He was one of the leaders on our team. Grayson will be attending The University of South Carolina this fall. Will Jurchak: Will was a three starter for the Boys Tennis Team. Each year he got better and better due to his work ethic and love for the
game. Will found ways to pester his opponents and beat guys that were probably more skilled. He always went into a match expecting to win and very rarely was proven wrong. Over the past three seasons Will accumulated more wins than anyone on the team and was an All-Conference Selection his Junior year and also Team MVP. Will will attend Wofford College this fall. Noah James: Noah was a four year starter for the Boys Tennis Team. He had a variety of shots that he used to attack his opponents. He was a benchmark that other players on the team used to gauge their improvement as he also received their best game. Noah was an All-Conference Selection his Junior year. Noah will be attending The University of North Carolina at Charlotte in the fall. Tyler Miller: Tyler was a part of the team for the past three seasons. He knew his role and always brought energy to practice each and every day. He always encouraged his team mates and pushed them to succeed. He is a beast at the net. By his senior year Tyler showed
growth not only in his tennis game but also as a teammate and leader. Tyler will be attending Cape Fear Community College in the fall. Ryan Proud: Ryan has been a part of the team for the past two seasons. He worked really hard to improve from last year to this year. Ryan was not going to beat himself, as he was very consistent. Ryan probably had the best backhand on the team due to his commitment and per-
severance. Ryan will be attending NC State University in the fall. Nate Natale: Nate was a member of the Tennis team each of the last two seasons. Nate had raw natural ability and was easily coached. His size and length made him a tough opponent for anybody. Nate really excelled at doubles and worked hard every day. Nate will be attending Appalachian State University in the fall.

“We are extremely proud to have Mr. Patton coming to Stuart W. Cramer High School to serve as our next athletic director,” stated Devine. “He possesses a wealth of experience, knowledge, leadership, and enthusiasm in the areas of teaching, coaching, and managing athletic programs.” Devine continued, “Mr. Patton has a positive vision for high school sports, and we look forward to what he will bring to our school. I am confident that everything he will do at Stuart W. Cramer will benefit our students, coaches, and everyone associated with our athletics program.” A 1990 graduate of North Gaston High School, Patton attended N.C. His coaching career includes serving as the head football coach at Stanley Middle School, assistant football coach at Belmont Middle School, and assistant football and baseball coach at South Point High School. He became the head football coach at North Gaston High School in 2011. “While I will miss being a part of the Wildcat family at North Gaston, I appreciate the opportunity to become the athletic director at Stuart W. Cramer, and I am excited about what’s ahead,” said Patton. “Coach Terry Radford, who has served as the athletic director since the school opened, established an outstanding sports program at Stuart W. Cramer, and I look forward to building on his great foundation.” Patton added, “The student-athletes at Stuart W. Cramer are incredibly tal-
