MUSICIANS STRIVE TO BE PITCH PERFECT

Thirty-three Wayland students practiced their musical pieces to ensure each note was in tune as the annual Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) District Solo & Ensemble music festival took place at Wayland on February 16. More than 300 students from area middle and high schools performed vocal and instrumental solos, duets, trios and small ensembles before an adjudicator.

Of Wayland’s 44 entries, 15 will advance to the state festival being held in late April and early May. Gabriela Madu `19 advanced in three events, while Danny Liu `20 and Molly Davis `22 will each perform at state in two events. The rest of Wayland’s state delegation includes: Max Wierenga `21, Jing Jin `20, Noah Padilla `21, Ellie Aplin `22, Kevin Byrne `21, Stephanie Njeru `19, Hayden Masche `21 and Charles Lu `19.

STAGE DOOR PRESENTED AS SPRING PLAY The lights of Broadway will shine brightly on the Lindsay Auditorium stage this spring as the cast brings a production of Stage Door to life. This 1936 play, co-written by George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber, follows the story of Terry Randall, a struggling young actress and the other young theater hopefuls who reside in a New York City boarding house.

Martha Kesler H`08 said, “This is the largest cast to take the stage at Wayland in 21 years.” More than 30 students have acting roles in the production, while many more are involved with technical aspects of the production including set building, lighting, sound, and make-up. The set, featuring French doors and a broad staircase, is also more elaborate than those of past productions. Robert Bachmann `15, who is remembered for playing the lead role in Zorro during his senior year, has regularly returned to campus to donate his time and skill in set-building. Recalling the Spanish-style roof that was built in two days for Zorro, Ms. Kesler noted how wonderful it is to have his expertise and how much the students learn from him and appreciate his assistance.

Stage Door is presented the evenings of Thursday, April 11 and Friday, April 12 as part of Spring Family Weekend on campus. Tickets will be available at the door. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for Seniors.

ACADEMIC COMPETITIONS

FORENSICS TEAM CROWNED CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS Wayland’s Forensics team dominated the conference Forensics meet on February 4 at Lourdes Academy. Not only did they receive their fourth consecutive conference championship, several students took home individual medals for their events. The PlayActing group including Alexis Spears `20, Beca Hodlofski `20, Danny Liu `20, and Lauri Nadjingar `22 was locked in a three-way tie for first place; Andrew Sutton `19 received first place in the Solo Humorous category; Molly Davis `22 took first in Prose; while Hannah Davis `19 took first in Extemporaneous Speaking. The season continues with meets leading up to the state tournament in April.

WAYLAND ART CLUB HOSTS SECOND ANNUAL EMPTY BOWLS The positive response to the first Empty Bowls event last February encouraged the Art Club to expand their effort.

After last year’s sell-out crowd, the club increased their goal to raise $2,500 for the Dodge County Food Pantry.

Under the guidance of Wayland’s Resident Artist Justin Behm, students glazed 100 hand-thrown bowls during Open Studio nights. At the February 24 event, ticket holders selected a unique ceramic bowl in which to enjoy their soup and then took the bowl home as a souvenir of the evening.

TRAVEL DELAY PUSHED MODEL UN DELEGATES TO DO THEIR BEST Icy roads in early February delayed the departure of Wayland’s Model United Nations delegation to the annual four-day conference at the University of Chicago. Despite the disadvantage of arriving a day late (and a bit travel weary after a very early morning departure), the team’s advisor, James Cleary shared how proud he was of the team’s performance. He acknowledged the support and contributions of Liberty Bell H`14 as an advisor to the team and recognized four head delegates for their leadership – Hannah Davis `19, Simar Garcha `19, Sydney Seufzer `19, and Ken Wang `19.

In its 31st year, the academic conference draws nearly 3,000 high-school students from around the world. They assume the roles of ambassadors and diplomats for the weekend learning the challenges of international diplomacy and debating solutions to issues their generation will face. Students polish public-speaking and communication skills while becoming more confident and articulate global citizens.

RECORDS FALL IN SWIMMING Tia Thomas `20 is seeing her hard work pay off as she posts a record-breaking season. Early in the season, she broke the Wayland girls school record in the 100yard backstroke with a time of 1 minute, 5.41 seconds, eclipsing the previous mark of 1:06.1 set by Melissa Hill `95 in 1994.

She also was part of a record-breaking 200-yard free relay team. More recently, she broke the 500 free Wayland girls school record with a time of 6:02.34. This beats the old record of 6:03.20 set in 2001

WRESTLERS GENERATE EXCITEMENT This has been another exciting season of wrestling for the Beaver Dam/Wayland Academy cooperative wrestling team!

Though the overall record would not indicate it, our young men have been wrestling their hearts out! On Senior Night we recognized a great senior class including Nima Nafisi Bahabadi `19 who has done a fantastic job in only his second year of wrestling!

BOYS SOCCER CHAMPIONS CELEBRATED The Wayland Boys Soccer team celebrated their Flyway Conference Championship with the unveiling of the championship banner in the field house during half-time of a Girls Basketball game in Febraury.

The boys basketball team remained competitive against their opponents this season. Point guard Kerem Kocer `19 averaged a career high 23.8 points per game and was recognized as a leader in the Trailways-East Conference in assists per game (6.6). He was recently named to the Second Team All-Conference.

With no seniors on the girls basketball roster, the underclassmen were able to step into leadership roles, with everyone making improvements in their overall game. A 30-point effort from Aryanna Oestreicher `21 against Lourdes Academy was an impressive moment in the season.

COMMENCEMENT WEEK CELEBRATION AT A GLANCE

CLASS OF 2019 VALEDICTORIAN AND SALUTATORIAN NAMED In preparation for Commencement on Sunday, May 19, 2019, the valedictorian and salutatorian for the Class of 2019 have been named. These honors are awarded by the faculty to the seniors who best exemplify Wayland’s motto of “Knowledge and Character.” In addition to their high academic achievements, these students also demonstrate a strong commitment to Wayland’s ideals.

The Valedictorian is Hannah Davis of Beaver Dam, WI. Chang-Yu (Eugene) Chen of Taipei, Taiwan, will be the Salutatorian. A number of other student awards are announced during the commencement ceremony.

The selection of Junior Marshals will be announced in late March. These four members of the Class of 2020 will lead Wayland’s faculty and graduating seniors to Commencement. Junior Marshals are evaluated using the same criteria as the Valedictorian and Salutatorian.

Overcoming Writer’s Block We’ve all experienced the dread of sitting in front of a blank sheet of paper – or more likely these days, a blank screen – and the words that should spill from brain to fingertip to page simply aren’t coming. Staring into space with an exasperated sigh we realize writer’s block is tightening its frustrating grip.

Members of Wayland’s English Department shared some of their best tips and hints for banishing unproductive time at the keyboard.

“All writers need to accept that their first draft, or couple of drafts, are going to be unsatisfactory.

“Good writing often means working through frustration and having faith in the writing process. Staring at a blank page and hoping that inspiration will strike out of the clear blue sky isn’t helpful. You’ve got to put pen to paper, get your ideas on the page, and then revise, revise, revise. While some writers have natural talent, the most successful writers are the ones who are willing to diligently follow a process and put in the necessary work.”

“I usually advise students to start with the second paragraph. This recommendation seems counterintuitive, but students frequently feel pressured to ‘start their writing the right way.’ This preoccupation contributes to writer’s block.”

“When I see students struggling to get started with their essays, I usually encourage them to

start in the middle.

I tell them to skip the introduction and begin to tackle their strongest argument. Sometimes it’s easier to write an introduction after you’ve finished all your arguments.

When it comes to creative writing, I sometimes give them a prompt, even something as simple as one word, and tell them to create a conversation between two people they don’t know. The first line has to make use of or allude to that word.”

“My ‘old school’ suggestion is to splurge on some nice pens to get a surge of confidence. The more modern suggestion is to use different fonts and colors on the computer.”

“I ask students to ask themselves how they organize themselves best for freewriting.

They decide if they like mind maps (diagrams with words and/or pictures) or ‘stream of consciousness freewriting’. I instruct them to start writing for 10 to 15 minutes without stopping to overthink. Just write.”

“With mind maps, they create possible main ideas as hubs. Then they can write ‘spokes’ or lines leading to supporting details attached to main ideas. Ideas move from broad or general to specific. Later, they can choose which ideas seem best to write about and ignore ideas that seem unrelated to the topic.”

“When freewriting, I stress that rules of grammar and punctuation are not important, and it’s okay to get completely off topic for a sentence or two as long as the overall writing is about the topic. Later, they can pick their best ideas from what they write.”

“Both techniques get the writer started, which is the most important item sometimes. Often, to their own surprise, they get something tangible out of what may seem disorganized writing.”

Aside from managing grades, extracurricular activities, and volunteering is the foreboding process of the college essay. Wayland students are fortunate to have Elise Krause `04 providing guidance and playing an important role in countless college applications.

As an English teacher, Ms. Krause always treats all students with encouragement and kindness. While reviewing first draft essays with her, she demonstrates patience. She never disparages or shows frustration when reading a poorly executed essay. Instead, she guides students to a topic they are passionate about while helping them to expand the concept to three or four specific moments that clearly demonstrate the strengths of the candidate to college admissions officers.

MS. KRAUSE HELPS MORE THAN 50 SENIORS EACH YEAR CONVEY THEIR INTEREST AND FIT AT COLLEGES OF THEIR CHOICE.

Talking to her about the essays is the same as having a cup of tea or coffee with an old friend. It’s casual conversation that helps the writer to discover their capabilities.

She often employs humor through a wellplaced joke to lighten the mood.

She has earned a reputation among students as “savage, but in a good way.” Ms. Krause helps more than 50 seniors each year find the right words to convey their interest and fit at colleges of their choice. She transforms the task of writing a college essay from a daunting and arduous task to a fun and unexpected project as each student digs deep to present themselves in the best possible manner.

Kaleidoscope Provides a Creative Outlet Words and artwork tumble across the pages of Kaleidoscope. For more than 20 years Wayland’s literary magazine has provided a venue for students to share sentiments and evoke emotions while demonstrating their talent for creative writing.

Each fall Martha Kesler H`08, who holds a master’s degree in creative writing, leads students through various types of creative writing including fiction and poetry. More recent assignments have included photoems, poems that have an altered meaning via the introduction of a graphic element.

In addition to the traditional reading and writing assignments, the class members assume responsibility for the editing and production of the annual edition of Kaleidoscope. A team of five students are preparing this year’s edition.

The family of Catherine Hatcher `83 contributes funds to support the publication of Kaleidoscope. Catherine was instrumental in organizing Wayland’s first literary magazine, Fireweed, in 1983.

Literature Assignments Create Visual Appeal If a picture is worth a thousand words, students in Martha Kesler’s H`08 literature classes have developed some very creative methods of expressing themselves. Aside from assignments, Ms. Kesler taps into the students’ visual side with projects incorporating an artistic bent. She explained that these types of assignments, combining literature and art, especially appeal to visual learners while creating a variety of types of assignments within the curriculum.

Prior to winter break the hallway outside the English classrooms were decorated with shields illustrating images from Shakespeare’s MacBeth. Students in her classes have also designed book covers.

STUDENT DRIVEN INNOVATION RESULTS IN PATENT FOR WINDPROOF UMBRELLA by

Living in a subtropical climate country, Taiwan, where rain often pours and wind often roars, keeping an umbrella intact can be a challenge. While many people might be motivated to address this problem, their solutions are simply modest changes to existing designs rather than developing a superior model. We approached the problem by strengthening the structure of the umbrella while making it rotate to reduce wind resistance. The rotating idea originated from our childhood experience playing with a whipping top.

After conducting extensive research, we discovered that the concept of gyroscopic effect affects the umbrella design and performance. Experiments and testing revealed our new umbrella design increased wind resistance by 28 percent. During testing, we used an industrial fan as our wind source and implemented a variety of design ideas including trying different dimensions to the ribs, stretchers, and canopy in order to measure which combination provides the best resistance. The first of the two umbrellas we developed was destroyed in testing because of the wind.

While the construction was the hardest part, attending science fairs was the most fun part in this process. We felt a sense of accomplishment. In 2016, we attended the “Archimedes - Moscow International Salon of Inventions.” It is a big exhibition for people around the world to show their inventions. While there, we observed how creative human beings can be and how hard the participants work on their inventions. We, with our umbrella, earned a gold medal for Taiwan.

Before attending the invention fair in Russia, we also participated in the National Science Fair of Taiwan and won third place. As siblings we’ve been working together since we were born, but it was special to win something together. We’d participated in all kinds of science fairs with biology experiments; this was our first invention.

At present, the umbrella has not been mass manufactured and so is not available to the general public.

The Evolution of the Senior Capstone 01

As this edition of Greetings goes to press, members of Wayland’s senior class are defending their Senior Capstone projects. The projects range from growing organic fabric to recording an audiobook, and from teaching dance hall culture to writing for journalistic publication.

Martha Kesler H`08 recalled the old days of the senior thesis, a ten-page argumentative research paper written and due in February which affected third quarter grades. As the 10 p.m. deadline drew near on the designated Sunday, Ms. Kesler remembered students dashing up the Warren Cottage steps to turn in the papers on time. Those who turned in their papers early, lined the entrance to the residence hall creating a gauntlet for their remaining classmates to navigate to reach the proverbial finish line.

Over a period of time the research paper changed to engage underclass students in the experience of research and writing. Freshman and sophomores now learn how to collect and shift through data while preparing a wellwritten paper. As juniors, students are required to combine two different but related fields of study in their research.

Ms. Kesler explained the purpose is to have students learn to compare and contrast information related to a topic. A memorable, and very visual, example is the freedom of expression found in ballet

contrasted with the discipline required to build the strength and coordination to successfully execute the dance.

For seniors the Capstone can be any kind of project that is documented and defended in a presentation to current Capstone coordinators Lori Bird and Andrew McDonnell. Past projects have ranged from an environmental art installation on campus to building (and successfully launching) a boat and from collecting clothing for a women’s shelter to making a guitar from miscellaneous parts discovered on campus.

The Power of Words Take Center Stage by

difference between the almost right word and the right word is really a large matter. ’tis the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning.”

Word choice is important. A good working vocabulary is an essential tool in all of our communication, both written and spoken. And the power of words is evident in many ways.

In life, we move in many circles, and the vocabulary we use changes as we make our way through life. Farmers, auto mechanics, electricians, tax analysts, computer engineers, insurance salesmen, doctors, lawyers, plumbers all have different jargons to exchange complex information efficiently.

Perhaps nowhere in life is the power of words more important than in literature and theater, where the written word and the spoken word are the keys to success. In prose and poetry, word choice is critical to the success of a piece. There is a jargon here which separates the good writers from the not-so-good. The jargon of the written word includes simile, metaphor, synecdoche, alliteration, consonance, antithesis, hyperbole, irony, onomatopoeia, paradox, and oxymoron. Look at the opening words of A Tale of Two Cities: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way – in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.”

In 119 words, Dickens describes the period leading up to the French Revolution in the 1770s and compares it to conditions in England in 1859, the year the novel appeared in print. His word choices in creating the paradoxes of the passage are extremely important, and because of that, this passage has lived as one of the most engaging opening paragraphs ever written.

In poetry, writers use words and phrases that create in the minds of their readers (or listeners, for after all, poetry should be heard) vivid images for all the senses. If the poem is rich in imagery, the readers (or listeners) will see, smell, hear, and maybe even taste what the poet is telling them.

The power of words is even more important. Here, the spoken word can advance the plot, generate laughter or tears, instantly change moods, generate colorful imagery, start or end relationships (maybe heal or destroy them), bring comfort or pain, produce change, and create lasting first impressions about characters for the audience.

The words the actors use can provide context and nuance and enable them to convey emotion in a way that the written word simply can’t.

Pronunciation and stress or emphasis can be used to convey different shades of feeling and meaning. Dialects can provide the audience with information about the characters.

No doubt about it: the power of words is impressive. Never stop learning new ones!

As I became more and more confident, it was easier to greet new people and I began my own “show” during family gatherings or celebrations. My confidence was rooted in my native language. Arriving in the United States as an international student, I knew that I had to improve my English as much as possible. Wayland’s academic teams, like Model United Nations and Forensics, were good venues to practice.

As I spoke in public more frequently, I gained more and more confidence. During my freshman year, I spoke in front of everyone at a Friday Chapel gathering. I was nervous, my body was shaking, my hands were sweaty, but despite speaking in my second language I was determined to complete the task. Many classmates and teachers congratulated me for a nice speech.

That first success and encouragement filled me with joy and confidence.

Since then, I have loved public speaking because of the opportunities to share thoughts and potential to make social impacts. I’ve taken advantage of both formal and informal opportunities at Wayland to continue improving my skills and confidence.

Last fall I returned to the podium during Chapel to share thoughts about learning language. After the presentation, many of my friends thanked me for sharing inspirational thoughts with them.

I’ve learned at Wayland that the power of presentation lies in both the presenter and the audience. To the presenter, the power is confidence and effective communication of positive messages; to the audience, the power is an opportunity to contemplate new perspectives and ideas. Words and ideas come to life through opportunities to practice effective communication.

Jane Blossom `21 plans to study in Colombia for an entire year after having applied to the exchange program. Moreover, she needed to maintain a GPA above a 3.80 on a 4.00 scale! This may appear rather daunting, but Jane’s tenacity and hard work eventually earned her this once in a lifetime opportunity.

The Rotary International Youth Exchange program provides numerous opportunities to learn about another country beyond just the classroom. Jane explained the program’s primary goal, “The basis of the program is cultural-immersion; learning about a culture while actually being present in it.” She clarified that this combination of cultural awareness and academics is an experience she believes will further build her character. Wanting to get the roots of her inspiration, I asked her about what made her make time in her busy schedule to pursue this avenue of exploration. Her body language echoed her reply, “I chose to do the study abroad program because I wanted to challenge myself. I want something bigger that will really expand horizons and help me

For students (or others) who may be a bit hesitant in venturing out of their comfort zone, Jane reassures them that “if anyone wants to study abroad, you should totally do it! Even though it might be scary, no matter who you are or what your background is, you will experience personal growth.” It is this mindset on life, to take risks and embrace adventures to learn about the world, that has already, and will continue to help Jane flourish as an individual. The Rotary International Youth Exchange will help her become more accustomed to and respectful of the diverse world about her as she learns more about her place in it.

I can’t name a specific instance, but I am considered one of the best writers in my field of undergraduate study here at Kansas State. I know the military didn’t give me that gift, so it must originate with my amazing teachers at Wayland!

My vocabulary is better because of his “suggestion.” I wasn’t wild about the idea at the time. It was when he assigned Return of the Native, I believe. I remember many of the words from that particular assignment.

Mr. Proctor H`07, “never write ‘the reason is because...’” has always stuck with me.

This was useful writing many papers as a history major in college. I didn’t struggle in the freshman writing sections as most of my peers did, thanks to all of the writing we did at Wayland. I also learned how to transition from one topic/section/ paragraph to another.

I also have a memorable, (unfavorite?) memory of Mr. Patterson during my senior year. We had to read Crime and Punishment over Christmas break. The first day back he gave us a college level exam that some of my classmates learned, to their sorrow, could not be passed if you had only read the Cliff Notes version. I still say that was a crime and a punishment.

While reading Gogol’s Dead Souls, Mr. Patterson taught us the term “nihilism.” I became a philosophy teacher. And nobody taught Shakespeare’s murder scenes more dramatically than Mr. Proctor, as he fell out his first-floor window.

We were reading Tom Sawyer in Mr. Patterson’s class and we set up the desk to represent a raft and read in class. It opened my mind. Discover in your mind what you’re reading and live it, enjoy it.

When I was a junior, I had Ms. Krause `04 for English. One day, she stopped me in the library, sat me down, and told me the paper I turned in was B quality, but that she knew I was an A quality writer. She challenged me to work harder and raise my standard... which I eventually did.

Now I work in communications where I’m constantly writing. Thanks Ms. Krause!

Mr. Schantz H`85 assigned us to write a paper on how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. He then would act out as his uncle who never had or made the sandwich. He would make it exactly as written. It taught me how to think before write something and think about who might be reading it. These experiences at Wayland were very important lessons for me in my life.

During my Freshman year English class with Miss Nancy Klosterman (later Nancy Nissalke) gave a pop quiz which caught me unprepared and embarrassed. Miss Klosterman spied me in my back outside row seat, with my text open in my lap, trying to crib.

Very gently she whispered, in a voice I’m almost sure no one but me heard, “You weren’t trying to cheat, were you?” I was caught red-handed but stammered out some lame denial anyway.

“I didn’t think so,” said Miss K. with a smile, and she and I never spoke of the incident again. Nor, to the best of my knowledge, did any of the other students ever find out it happened.

I’m not even sure if everyone will agree with Miss K’s approach today. But it worked. To the best of my recollection I never cheated again, through four years at Wayland, four years of college and three years of law school.

Thank you for your grace Miss Klosterman. You could easily and justifiably have crushed me on the spot, but you chose a more compassionate, and

ultimately more enlightening, path with an immature, fragile 14-year old. God bless you.

Mr. Proctor taught so much more than just English. Would it even be possible to buy a jewel as rare and precious? Without much ado, in the process of being himself, Boston Brahmin was incorporated in class. French phrases would be mixed in with the course of conversation. One common example was the simple, “Où est le papier?” We got history lessons on WWII as he shared his life experiences. We received lessons in the history of English and on class management. If a (first hour) student was late, he would send someone to “knock him up” referencing the pre-alarm clock era job of “knocker-up.” A knocker-up’s job was to rouse sleeping people so they could get to work on time. From Wikipedia: “The knocker-up used a baton or short, heavy stick to knock on the clients’ doors or a long and light stick, often made of bamboo, to reach windows on higher floors. At least one of them used a pea-shooter.”

Mr. Schantz taught honors senior English, and I think he had to adjust his expectations down. He gave us a big essay test on The Canterbury Tales. On the day we expected him to hand the test back, he told us we hadn’t gotten it. None of us. In all of the papers, there were a few good observations, but, he said, “they were like pearls in a dung heap.” It was a lesson in the power of words.

Wayland Students Develop “An App for That”

If

you’ve got a smartphone and a problem, it’s also likely someone has developed an app to help you out. A visit to the Google Play Store or Apple iTunes presents a dazzling array of solutions to help you find your way, track your caloric intake, or guide you through a meditation. After a hands-on assignment, Wayland’s Computer Science students might never look at apps the same way again.

Students in a class taught by Holly Gefvert `78 were tasked to build a mobile app. Starting with a problem, they developed a solution, developed a storyboard, and created a prototype. Three apps in the class were selected to be developed further for competition.

“The creativity and dedication of all of the students was remarkable,” noted Ms. Gefvert. “I was especially impressed with the way they embraced the process and were able to prototype their ideas with great professionalism.”

Each team also developed a promotional video to advertise their app in advance of a campus-wide competition with the winner decided by popular vote by the Wayland students and faculty. Infra-Action was developed by the team of Gabbay Madu `19, Jackie Gorman `19, and Kanat Colak `19.

I chose to take a computer science class not only because I’m a self-proclaimed “nerd,” but also for the opportunity to learn more about it in the age of big data. Through the course, I learned basic programming, properties of computers, and a little bit of history. More importantly, I enjoyed the class because it was project-based. As individuals, we developed problem-solving abilities through coursework that required us to write programming code.

Students worked both individually and as teams to learn and apply design thinking: viability, feasibility, and desirability. Design thinking helps address development questions to create a product that is useful, desirable, and creative.

We created the Infra-Action app based on experience and observation of residence hall life. The goal was to make it easier for supervisors in each hall to complete room checks. Additionally, we wanted students to know when and if they were “dormed” without the use of a marked sheet.

One of our most significant challenges was developing a user-friendly interface; something that had great visual appeal.

I feel we were successful as the app accomplished what we intended: to record and notify. If I could do anything differently, it would probably be a more modern and attractive interface for the screens that display the information to the user.

My concept, selected to be a team project, was based on photography. The My Photography app is an all-in-one photoediting, photo-stock, and instructional photography resource.

The project was especially enjoyable for me because I learned and used skills that I acquired through the class. It was fun to design an app collaboratively as I learned more about the creative sides of my peers.

With 25 countries and 9 states, Wayland is a microcosm of the world, and as such, it’s only fitting we have our own language. To the untrained ear, these phrases and words may sound foreign, even alien, but fear not!

You happen to have in your hands the official, student-guaranteed guide to Wayland jargon!

per (pər): noun, shortened version of permission Spend a few hours at Wayland and I guarantee you’ll hear at least one student asking a teacher for “per.” In order to leave campus, use your phone during the academic day, or have a sleepover, students need to ask supervisors or teachers for per (permission). sentence example :

“Hey! Let’s ask for per and go to Sake House

for dinner!”

cordial (kôrjəl): adjective At Wayland, anytime you hear “cordial,” simply substitute it with “mandatory.” When Mr. Lennertz sends you an email cordially inviting you to a recital or a formal dinner, you better be there! sentence example :

“You have been cordially invited to Lessons

and Carols!”

senior power hour (sēnyər pou(ə)r ou(ə)r): noun As everyone knows, seniors are the best (Go Class of 2019!) As seniors, we get our own special hour! On Fridays and Saturdays seniors get an extra hour added to our curfew, instead of having

to go back to our respective dorms at 11 pm like the younger students. Prime locations to spend Senior Power Hour: the Union (a great option if you’re in the mood for a freshly-cooked cheeseburger with your game of pool) or Lindsay Gym (great for blowing off steam in a game of basketball or soccer). sentence example :

“Let’s hang out in the Union during Senior Power Hour. I’m going to destroy you in ping-pong!”

dormed (dôrmd): verb Forget to sign in at your residence hall? Fail a room check (a check of your room by the residence hall supervisor for cleanliness)?

Dormed! At Wayland, being ‘dormed’ means that you have to stay in your respective dormitory after your early curfew and can’t go to the dorm lounge or order food. sentence example :

“Let’s go to dinner Saturday night instead. I’m dormed at 8:00 pm on Friday.” alternative example :

“I don’t think he’s ever been dormed! His room is so clean! I think he holds the record!”

AND

capstone (kapˌstōn): noun At Wayland, everyone, from freshmen to seniors, has a capstone research project that they work on throughout the year. Topics vary from fashion trends to athletic marketing to Aristotle.

Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors write research papers on their theses, scouring books, and writing draft after draft before finally turning in a final version. Seniors have senior capstone projects, which are far more free-form and independent. There is no required paper and students can tackle any project their heart desires. Past examples include building a fireplace, reviewing Beaver Dam restaurant hotspots, and growing fabric. sentence example :

“I’ve read so many books on bird flight patterns for my capstone.”

Congratulations! You just learned (or revisited) some key and unique Wayland terms and phrases!

Casually drop these vocab words in conversations with Wayland students and teachers and you will automatically become the coolest, most linguistically-hip person ever.

RULES TOO AN EXCERPT FROM A CHAPEL PRESENTATION DELIVERED BY JAMES CLEARY, ENGLISH DEPARTMENT CHAIR AND DYE CHAIR OF RELIGION

The rules we follow are necessary for a functioning society. This is true on large scale – like countries, states, and cities – and on the small scale in places like Wayland. These rules come with consequences: • Don’t sign out… early curfew • Forget your homework… you lose points on an assignment On the other hand, following the rules the right way, or going above and beyond the rules, can yield positive reinforcement… rewards.

• Proctor a night on duty… get a night out.

• Make the honor roll… get some extra privileges.

The rules are intended to make Wayland a safe, joyful, and vigorous place. We know why we should follow the written rules, but we should aspire to follow some unwritten rules just as closely.

What are these unwritten rules? Well, that’s the trouble: they’re not written. Or more

specifically, they’re not written on anything physical.

Yet, in spite of the apparent non-appearance of these rules, Wayland students follow certain rules.

• We don’t clap when someone drops a glass in the dining hall.

• We say “please” and “thank you” to everyone, adults or other students • We do the “happy birthday” thing at lunch.

• We hold doors, we carry heavy things, we straighten up, and we help when asked.

The unwritten rules are indicative of a larger ethos of kindness. We celebrate one another’s successes and we don’t mock their shortcomings. These rules are vital for our collective well-being.

The great challenge, but also the great lesson, of keeping our unwritten rules is that you won’t be punished or rewarded in accordance with them.You won’t get a punishment for walking past a piece of trash on the ground, and you won’t get an accolade for picking it up. The unwritten rules are the ones we follow because they are often the right thing to do.

We do lots of things around here and we don’t always remember why. We follow our unwritten rules, to take care of ourselves, each other, and this community. You don’t need to know all the unwritten rules in order to follow.

You only need to travel about this community and encounter others with kindness in your heart. We have all, from time to time, needed a kind voice during a difficult time. Be that voice to all you encounter.

When we are at our best, this is what we do, and this is who we are. Messy dorm lounges won’t clean themselves up; they need us to do it. In doing so we demonstrate care for ourselves and for one another.

The episode, entitled “The Year After ‘The Year of the Woman’” highlighted the presence of new women in the U.S. Congress and increasing influence of women in government.

ER IK BR A NDT `91 is in his 23rd year of teaching English for St. Paul Public Schools. Recently he helped design a new curriculum for a literature course. He is also still a musician and performs regularly with his band, The Urban Hillbilly Quartet.

ERIN LAMM WILSON `02 writes “I just launched my own family law practice after being a partner at a firm for ten years. I assist clients with litigation, mediation and parenting coordination. I love what I do and I’m excited to own my firm now.” She and her husband, Bryan, have two children, Ava (age 5) and Brecken (age 3).

And the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature goes to JIMMY CH IN ` 9 2 for Free Solo. The 2018 film, directed by Chin and his wife Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, profiles rock climber Alex Honnold performing a free solo climb of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. The film premiered at the Telluride Film Festival last August and won the “People’s Choice Award: Documentaries” at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival.

Oculogica, a company founded by D R . U Z M A S A M A DA NI ` 88 and directed by D R . RO S I N A S A M A DA N I ` 8 5, recently learned that their product EyeBOX was granted marketing authorization by the federal Food and Drug Administration. The instrument tracks patients’ eye movements and issues a score that helps to determine whether the patient might have a concussion. It eliminates the need for athletes to undergo a baseline concussion test at the beginning of a season. Wayland athletes participated in clinical trials of the device.

ELSIE GERT RUD E “ T RU DY ” M I L L E R , 96 years, of Beaver Dam passed away peacefully on August 4, 2018. Trudy was born on November 8, 1921, in Juda, Wisconsin. She loved gardening and helping her husband, Marvin, with Miller’s Apple Orchard on their

dairy farm. Trudy loved her family deeply and is survived by her four children; eleven grandchildren, including Michelle Miller `13 and Ana Maria Miller `16; and 15 great grandchildren.

MAR ION ALMA L U E B K E, 91, formerly of Juneau, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on December 7, 2018. Marion was born on May 9, 1927, in Green Lake County.

She married Gerald R. Luebke on December 30, 1950, in Waupun.

Marion was very active in the Dodge County community and is survived by two sons, Gerald of Mayville and William Luebke H`89 of Beaver Dam; her granddaughter; and other relatives and friends.

1950s E R I C J . BE R G S T RO M ` 5 1 , 84, of Pompano Beach, Florida, died at home on October 13, 2018. Born on October 14, 1933, in Neenah, Wisconsin, he graduated from Wayland Academy, Dartmouth College, and worked in sales for Bergstrom Paper Company. Eric lived in Neenah until 1963 when he moved to

J O S E PH T RU E S T E U E R J R . , age 90, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on November 14, 2018. Joe was born in Chicago to Joseph and Elsie (Mayer) Steuer on November 25, 1927. He graduated from Latin School of Chicago and attended Northwestern University.

After WWII he served as a mail carrier in the US Army, and married the love of his life, Jamie Genrich in 1954. Joe started and ended his career at Oscar Mayer, receiving numerous sales accolades and retiring after 34 years. He served as a Wayland Academy Trustee from 1977 to 2001. He was a private pilot who flew into his 70s, an avid golfer, fly fisherman, hunter, world traveler. Joe made an impression on everyone he met, and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jamie; children, Dorothy Degnan, Joseph Steuer III `77, and Jamie Wacek `78; nine grandchildren, including Anna Cardarella `93; and nine great grandchildren and other relatives and friends including nephew Greg Mayer `69. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Louise Frame, and sister, Eugenie Friedman.

He rose to leadership positions in the Cayman Islands Hotel Association, and was awarded honorary Member of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 1969 and named a Pioneer in Tourism for Cayman Heroes Day 2017. Eric is survived by his wife, Nancy; his five children and two step-children; 23 grandchildren and great grandchildren.

R AY L A M BE R S O N L O O Z E ` 5 4 , passed away on August 16, 2018 after a diagnosis of cancer. He was born with the surname of Little on August 20, 1936, in Honolulu to Virginia Rae Lamberson and Captain Rex Beach Little. Ray was blessed to grow up in a full home and attended Wayland Academy before earning his BA degree from Carleton College.

He served in the Navy for four years, which he counted among his fondest memories. He met his wife Helene in San Diego and after they were married made their home in the Midwest and eventually in Belmont, California where they lived for 47 years. Ray worked for Detroit Diesel Allison, a division on General Motors for 36 years. He was preceded in death by

his wife of 52 years Helene Vivian Johnson. Ray is survived by children Lane Poms, Ray Looze Jr., and Elizabeth “Tish” Walters; five grandchildren; his brothers Don Little, John, Jack, and Rick Looze `67; and many more family and friends.

DIA N E POLEN BLICK ` 5 9 died November 20, 2018, at home.

Diane was born in Detroit, daughter to Donald Butkau and Mildred J. Butkau Polen who preceded her in death. She married Robert M. Blick in 1964 and moved to Grand Blanc in 1974. Diane was a practicing nurse and then became the administrator of Clara Barton Nursing Home of Flint, Michigan for 17 years until retirement in 1990. Afterwards she joined her husband at Polen Mortgage & Realty Co. of Grand Blanc, and continued serving her community in a variety of ways. She is survived by her husband Robert, daughter Lisa A. Carl, and grandson Tyler Carl. Her son, Richard Carl, preceded her in death in 2005.

1960s TERRLYN ANN DR EBLOW J O H N S O N ` 6 1 passed away in her home of natural causes on December 8, 2018. Born on June 15, 1943 in Beaver Dam to loving parents Art and Ruth Dreblow; she grew up in Princeton, Wisconsin where she loved her times on the family farm. At Wayland Academy, she received the Laura A. McDonald Award, before matriculating at UW-Madison where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and her Master of Science in Counseling and Behavioral Studies. She was an extremely active UW student who worked on the Dean’s Committee responsible for designing and implementing the rules for changing women’s curfew systems; this was the forerunner and model for the present co-ed dormitory systems on campuses across the country. She is survived by her three children, Kristin, Brian, and Patrick; three grandsons; sister Arta Peschke `66 and brother Dan Dreblow `69; and loving in-laws, nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her husband Roy, parents Arthur and Ruth Feigel Dreblow, and extended family members.

1970s SA N DRA SY KES `72, age 65, passed peacefully on December 23, 2018. She was the devoted daughter of the late Byron M. Sykes and Gloria Tasker Sykes and will be missed by her brother, sisterin-law, aunt, many cousins and friends, whom she touched in a deep and positive way.

1990s Susan George, mother of TAN YA G E OR G E RU DY ` 9 1 , writes to share that Tanya has passed away recently while in India.

JAMES PICKARD `43 of Bloomington, Minnesota, age 92, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on August 31, 2018. He was born December 5, 1925, son of Sam 1916 and Dorothea Pickard, and grew up in Neenah, Wisconsin.

Jim was a third generation Wayland student, continuing the legacy begun by his grandfather H.W. Pickard 1873.

Following graduation, Jim served as a radio technician in the U.S. Navy for two and one-half years during World War II, and then graduated from Ripon College in 1949.

Jim had a 37 year career in banking, most of it with the Northwestern Bank in Bloomington as a commercial banker. Jim and Mitzi H`43 spent their winters in Green Valley, Arizona, after he retired in 1986. He was active in many community activities in Bloomington, was an avid softball player and golfer, and a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his wife, Mitzi; sons Charlie, Al, Andy, and daughter Meg Harmon; eleven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and brother Sam `51. Preceded in death by twin sisters Julie Shaw `47 and Judy Yeakel `47, and brother Tom `50.

THANK YOU TO OUR WAYLANDTINES DONORS Led once again by the Class of 1956, alumni from 25 classes contributed more than $16,000 during the 24hour event! Parents, faculty and staff donated as well. This surpassed last year’s effort by $3,000!

The $10,000 matching challenge issued by an anonymous donor was met, as was an additional $2,000 match issued during the final hours of the day! All gifts benefit the Academy Fund and will be used to support academic excellence for our students.

A team of students completed thank you calls on Saturday, February 23 to express their gratitude.
