RIVERFRONT REJUVENATION A plan for revitalizing the east bank of the Wisconsin River in Wausau, north of a world-class kayaking course, will reshape the city’s downtown.

The Wausau Whitewater Park on the Wisconsin River in downtown Wausau is home to canoe and kayak races throughout each summer.

T

he Wisconsin River and its tributaries have shaped many of the communities in the region. From the region’s beginnings as a lumber industry hub to the later growth of the paper industry along its banks, the Wisconsin River has served as a great connector of communities.

Under a City of Wausau plan, a strip of land along the Wisconsin River’s east side will be developed to inspire additional connections to the waterway. Development is planned to transform a strip of shoreline into an active waterfront, further shaping the future of the community. This land, just north of the dam that controls the flow of water through Wausau’s world-class kayak course, is bordered by Bridge Street on the north and the Eye Clinic of Wisconsin on the south.

“The ongoing East Riverfront Redevelopment is both the culmination of over a decade of the City’s investment to assemble and remediate the area for redevelopment and the start of a new era of development with high-end waterfront offices and housing set in an amazing public park area like no other in the region.” said Chris Schock, the City of Wausau’s economic development director.

The City is working to complete an extension of First Street which will be renamed North River Drive. Construction of a new segment linking to the River’s Edge trail, a public wharf and shoreline restoration is already under construction and will be completed in 2016.

Headlined by annual events like the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum’s Birds In Art exhibit, Wausau’s Chalkfest and Artrageous weekends and further bolstered by national performing artists booked at updated facilities like the Grand Theater, the area offers big city culture in the Northwoods.

THE ARTS: One of the unique aspects of the Wausau region is the area’s commitment to the arts. The Center for Visual Arts is undergoing a renaissance downtown as improvements were recently made to their location near the 400 Block, while the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum and the Grand Theater have also undergone transformations in recent years. The annual Chalkfest in July and Artrageous Weekend in September offer great opportunities for local artists to display their work and for the eyes of residents to feast upon a wide array of artistic styles.

DOWNTOWN WAUSAU: Some cities in the state that are the size of Wausau have struggled to keep their downtowns vibrant. With ongoing improvements, Wausau’s downtown continues to not only offer diverse shopping and dining options, but through the development of the 400 Block, offers a premiere destination for community events.

THE METRO AREA: The Wausau region is more than just the City of Wausau. Kronenwetter, Rib Mountain, Rothschild, Schofield and Weston offer their own flavor and multiple options to those eyeing relocation for parks, schooling, neighborhoods and employment. Add in Merrill, Mosinee and several nearby rural communities and there are even more alternatives. See pages 24 to 37 for more information on these and other surrounding communities.

WISCONSIN’S ONLY ‘MOUNTAIN’: At its highest elevation, 760 feet above the surrounding terrain, Rib Mountain State Park and Granite Peak Ski Area can be seen from miles around. Thousands flock to this location each year for skiing and snowboarding in the winter and hiking, cycling and sight-seeing during the warmer months. No trip to the Wausau region is complete without a trip to the top of the 60foot observation tower.

EDUCATION: With a variety of public and private schools in the area, there are a lot of excellent options to choose from. The region is also home to secondary educators like Globe University, the Medical College of Wisconsin, Northcentral Technical College, Rasmussen College, the University of Wisconsin – Marathon County and others.

PARKS: It seems that you can’t drive more than a few blocks without running into one of the many community parks. Some are as tiny as Underwood Triangle Park at the intersection of Thomas and Cleveland streets

FLYING: With a newly renovated passenger terminal building, Central Wisconsin Airport (CWA) offers flights to locations around the Midwest in a modern setting. CWA is critical to the region’s business and tourism interests and offers flights on American Airlines, Delta and United. The Wausau Downtown Airport along Lake Wausau hosts aviation and hot air balloon events in a convenient location.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY HAPPENINGS: The summer is filled with concerts, farmers markets, hot air balloons, the Wisconsin Valley Fair and Chalkfest, while the cooler months offer blazing fall colors, tubing at Sylvan Hill Park, pond hockey and Winterfest.

HEALTHCARE: With a pair of large medical campuses in the region, one on Wausau’s west side and another along Highway 29 in Weston, the area offers top-of-the-line care in state-of-the-art facilities.

TREES, AND LOTS OF THEM: The plentiful lumber that brought many settlers to the area in the 1800s is again what attracts many to the region today, though for a different reason. Instead of harvesting the great trees found here, residents enjoy their shade in the summer and their spectacular color each fall.

THE DUDLEY TOWER: This icon of the Wausau skyline stands at 241 feet, which makes it the tallest commercial building in Wisconsin outside of Milwaukee!

THE COMMUTE: There are few neighborhoods in the Wausau metro area that can’t be accessed in less than 20 minutes from any other point in the metro area. And highways like 29 and 51/39 allow speedy access to points countywide. Traffic jams are uncommon to the thousands that commute to jobs around the region every day.

Marathon County, created in 1850, is named after the Greek city of Marathon. Located in central Wisconsin, the county seat is Wausau.

Land Area: 1,576 square miles Water Area: 31 square miles Elevation: 1,195 feet at Wausau, 1,924 feet at the Queen’s Chair on Rib Mountain (fourth highest point in Wisconsin), 1,605 feet at Upper Mosinee Hill

The Village of Kronenwetter is located in Marathon County, approximately five miles south of the City of Wausau. Mosinee 715-693-2275 | mosinee.wi.us Population: 3,988 Mosinee, located south of Wausau at the intersection of highways 153 and 39/51, has a long and rich history dating from the days of the first French fur trappers, stretching through the logging days, and continuing today.

The Wisconsin River’s falls have been tamed over time and Mosinee retains a close tie with nature with river access for fishing and boating and offering 12 parks in the city. The shores of the river are lined with trees and Mosinee Hill is easily visible. Mosinee prides itself as a small community with big prosperity and a lot to offer both its residents and visitors.
