In Waukesha, street and park trees are a vital form of public infrastructure that deliver significant financial returns. Beyond their visual and environmental benefits, trees help communities manage infrastructure costs, strengthen local economies, and improve public health. When properly selected and maintained, public trees represent a cost effective, long term investment in Waukesha.
Street trees increase residential and commercial property values by enhancing neighborhood character and walk ability.Tree lined streets are associated with higher home sale prices and stronger retail demand. Through downtown and other commercial areas, street trees encourage foot traffic , longer shopping visits, and increased commerce. In this way, trees help support local businesses and bolster long term municipal revenue.
Our climate amplifies the financial value of public trees. During summer, shade from street trees reduces pavement and building temperatures, lowering air conditioning demand and cutting energy costs for homes and businesses. Strategically placed trees can act as windbreaks, reducing heat loss and lowering heating expenses. These year round energy savings help residents manage utility costs while reducing peak demand on local energy systems.
Trees contribute to a healthier Waukesha, producing measurable economic benefits through reduced healthcare costs and improved workforce productivity. Tree lined streets encourage walking and active transportation, even in urban areas with long winters, while exposure to green spaces supports mental health and stress reduction.Trees also filter air pollutants common in urban environments, helping reduce respiratory issues and associated medical costs. Healthier residents reduces long term public health expenditures.
State Trail Passes are available at the WPRF office starting May 1
Fee: $25 per person annually
A state permit is needed for anyone 16 years and older for all trail activities except walking and jogging. This pass is good on all state trails.

Waukesha’s trees provide critical storm water benefits that are especially valuable as intense rain events and snowmelt place pressure on storm water systems.Tree canopies intercept rainfall, while root systems improve soil infiltration, reducing runoff volume and velocity. The natural buffering of storm water is an integral part of the storm water infrastructure in Waukesha. By stabilizing soil, trees reduce sediments and pollutants that would otherwise reach the Fox river.
Trees deliver other ecosystem services that would otherwise require costly engineered solutions. These include air pollution removal, carbon storage, noise reduction, and urban heat mitigation. In Waukesha, street trees help counteract the urban heat island effect, improving comfort. Research demonstrates that each dollar invested in street and park trees yields increasing economic benefits over time
For Waukesha, street trees are not discretionary amenities—they are financially productive assets to our community. By increasing property values, lowering energy and infrastructure costs, improving public health, and delivering valuable environmental services, trees strengthen municipal budgets and local economies. Continued investment in street trees supports fiscal responsibility, climate resilience, and long term vitality for Waukesha.

Your Parks Recreation & Forestry Board is composed of six citizen members and two members of the Common Council, all appointed by the Mayor, and confirmed by the Common Council. The Board governs and manges the public parks, parkways, recreational property, recreation activities and urban forestr y program (ie street trees) that reflect the needs and interest of all residents. The Board typically meets once a month at 5:30 pm in Common Council Chambers at City Hall. Please feel free to attend any upcoming meeting date found on the website.
