Did you know? 1837 residents attended events created and designed for the enjoyment of seniors in 2017/2018.

Park Place Center is continually adding new programs and events, along with bringing back favorite things to do for our Waukegan Township residents.

Getting Fit For The New Year During 2017-2018 over 14698 units of service were provided to seniors benefiting from the Fitness & Wellness programs. This also includes educational workshops on health topics and screenings with the Park Place Wellness program, held at Park Place and other locations throughout the township.

If you are 55 and older, now is the perfect time to fight off cabin fever with a visit to Park Place. From pool tables to the fitness center, there is always something to do at Park Place.

Plan your next workout at the Park Place Fitness Center and burn off those excess holiday calories. Equipment include: Aerobic Rider, Treadmills, Stationary Bicycles, 1 Stair Master, and Weights.

Want to save money on prescription drugs? Everyone on Medicare can review their Medicare Part D plan to make sure it provides the best coverage as well as make changes for the new year. You can do this yourself using Plan Finder on www.medicare.gov or make an appointment at Park Place to work with one of our highly trained Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) counselors. To compare 2019 Medicare Part D plans, you will need a list of your current medications from the pharmacy, or your medication bottles, and your Medicare Card. Ikea / Woodfield Mall - Tuesday, December 11, 2018 Depart Park Place at 8:45 a.m. for Ikea. Choose to shop both locations or spend all day at either mall. Milwaukee Christmas Bakery Bus Tour - Tuesday, December 18, 2018 Savor traditional baked goods while learning the Christmas holiday traditions of ethnic Milwaukee! The tour includes narrated history of Polish, German, Italian, Irish and other immigrants as well as visits to at least four bakeries. Lunch is included. The fee $95 includes tour, samples, and lunch.

Four Winds Casino– Wednesday, January 30, 2019 Climb on a comfy coach bus and enjoy the ride to Four Winds Casino, New Buffalo, MI! All payers will receive a $10 food credit and $15 instant slot credit when upon arrival. Bus Departs Park Place at 8:30 a.m. $39 fee per person.

Winter Fest And High Tea At The Baker House– Saturday, February 02, 2019 Explore ice sculptures, outdoor events, shopping, and finish with at the Historic Baker House Hotel with a tour and High Tea! You can choose to browse the outdoor ice sculptures or enjoy the ambiance of Lake Geneva shops. We will end our winter adventure with an hour tour and feast of sweet and savory tea sandwiches and pastries. Chicago Botanic Gardens Orchid Show– Tuesday, February 12, 2019 It might be cold outside, but it will be warm and beautiful inside the Botanic Gardens Orchid Show! Spend the morning viewing the orchids and botanic garden greenhouses. Lunch is on your own. Cost: $25.00 per person.

Exploring African American History, Art & Music in Chicago Wednesday, February 20,2019 Immerse yourself in the rich history, art and music of the African-American Culture in Chicago! We will start our day at the Pullman Porter Museum to learn the story of the Pullman Porters. Moving into Bronzeville we will experience art by foremost African American artists at the Gallery Guichard. For music lovers there will be a stop at Willie Dixon’s Blues Heaven to take in the history of jazz, blues, and the Chess Records greats.

Lunch will be at Pearls Place for traditional southern food. The trip will depart Park Place - 414 S. Lewis Ave., at 9:00 a.m. Fee of $79 includes all fees, lunch, and transportation.

Shedd Aquarium– Tuesday, March 05, 2019 You can party with the penguins! Spend the day meeting 32,000 amazing animals and explore the world’s oceans, rivers and reefs at the Shedd Aquarium! Celebrate National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) With the Park Place Writing Circle!

On November 1, participants begin working towards the goal of writing a 50,000-word novel or other project, by 11:59 PM on November 30. Valuing enthusiasm, determination, and a deadline, NaNoWriMo is for anyone who has ever thought about writing a novel, or desires to finish a large writing project. Every November, thousands of writers around the world congregate at Come Write In spaces to pursue their creative dreams and write the first draft of their novel.

We will have two write in sessions in the Park Place Library - 414 S. Lewis Ave., Waukegan, IL. November 1st & November 15th at 1:00 p.m.

Our write in’s will feature coffee, and some treats.

December 6th, at 1:00 p.m.

Patricia Foley is a life-long Waukegan resident. She attended Waukegan Township High School where she was a member of the Dolphin Synchronized Swimming Club and the swim team. She earned a Bachelor’s in Mathematics from the University of Illinois. She also holds a Bachelor’s of Science, a Masters in Mathematics from the University of Illinois, and a Master of Arts from Northwestern University. Pat taught at Zion Benton High School, Waukegan High School, and Lake Forest High School where she retired. The community has benefited greatly from Ms. Foley’s intense commitment to her hometown. She was twice elected to the Waukegan Community Unit School District Board where she served for 16 years and served twice as president. Pat spent 30 years on the board of the Waukegan Park District. She served as President and a member of the League of Women Voters. Pat was also a member of the Exchange Club, Waukegan Concert Chorus, and the Waukegan Symphony. Ms. Foley also co-chaired one of the early house walks of Historic Homes in Waukegan. She was also instrumental in community meals at Christ Church in Waukegan, Waukegan Sunrise and Waukegan Main Street. She is a Master Gardener, University of Illinois Community Extension Services.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the report devoted a significant amount of its page count to healthcare concerns. It divided these into three sections: health status, health risk, and health care. Here are some of the main statistics they compiled in those sections: • Life expectancies have increased across the board. On average, people who live to 65 can expect to live about 20 more

Women have a slightly higher life expectancy than men.

Hispanic seniors have the highest life expectancy of any demographic, living an average of 2-3 years longer than people

The #1 cause of death amongst seniors is heart disease, followed closely by cancer. That remains true across all racial

and gender demographics.

In spite of common health issues, seniors feel pretty good about their health in general. 78% of people over 65 rated

their health as good, very good, or excellent.

15% of women and 10% of men over 65 report symptoms of depression. Those percentages go up with age; with 14%

of men over 85 and 19% of women aged 80-84 reporting symptoms.

Nearly 22% of seniors over 65 have a disability. The most common disability reported is difficulty with mobility.

44% of people over 65 report having difficulties with at least some ADLs. Needing help with ADLs is one of the main reasons seniors move to assisted living or consider hiring in-home care.

Only about 12% of people over 65 said they spend time exercising.

As with other age groups in the US, the proportion of seniors with obesity is on the rise. About 35% of people over 65 are

obese.

Almost all forms of health care for seniors are on the rise. The number of hospital stays, skilled nursing stays, hospital

visits, and home health care visits have all gone up.

About 1.8 million seniors over 65 live in nursing homes.

Nearly 5 million seniors receive care from a home health care agency.

During 2017-2018, Park Place buses transported 4202 seniors safely to and from medical appointments, grocery shopping at area stores, from senior buildings, to nursing homes to visit loved ones, and shuttles to and from Park Place for events, regular programs and important socialization.
