Dear Friends,
Spring is a traditional time of renewal. In our personal lives we can use this time to become renewed by cleaning out the old stuff. Like in fall when we rake up leaves and clean our yard in preparation for the arrival of new flowers and plants in spring, this is a time when we can remove the old and make way for a refreshed sense of wellbeing. The world is evolving and you don’t want to be left behind. You want to be able to email your friends and family members or even show your grandkids a couple of tricks that you’ve learned on the computer. To find out more about the Park Place Technology Center, refer to page 7 of this newsletter. The Park Place Memory Café’ is STARTING Wednesday, April 11th. Waukegan Township is here to assist with our Home Sweet Home program. Personal Lawn Care starting Monday, May 21st for seniors 55 or better who reside in Waukegan Township. You must call our hotline at (847) 599-2932 to sign up. Beginning this spring, Medicare will be sending out new cards to all beneficiaries. The new card removes the current Social Security-based identifying number and replace it with a random number/letter sequence that helps to reduce identity theft and fraud. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns against scammers posing as Medicare “agents” or health care providers telling seniors they need to purchase a replacement card. The new Medicare cards are free, and everyone with Medicare will be mailed a card between April 2018—April 2019. The only action you need to take is to ensure Social Security has your current address, as the new cards will be sent to the address in their files. If you’ve been solicited by a scammer, report it by calling 1-800-447-8477.
Hector & Emma Rodriguez were the 2011 Park Place Senior Prom King and Queen. This designation allowed them to participate as the Senior Prom King and Queen for 2011 in the annual 4th of July parade held each year by the Waukegan Park District. They also volunteered for food the annual 2010 Walk for Seniors. They were both avid Volunteers from 2003-2005 and members of our Spanish Support Group. Hector & Emma participated in many of our events such as our yearly Senior Prom, Hawaiian Luau, MLK events, and Holiday Christmas parties. Unfortunately, Hector passed away on Saturday, January 13th. He was a counselor at "NICASA" center in Waukegan where he retired after 30 years of service. We considered Hector a part of the Park Place extended family. He will truly be missed.
