Look at the faces of the members of the Class of 2024. They are the ultimate way of keeping everyone in the Watkinson community together in our awareness that what happens at this school is inextricably linked to our mission of preparing our students to shape their lives and the world around them. What is also true is that every day, in each classroom, all-school meeting, in clubs, affinity groups and alliances, and advisory meetings, authentic, deeply meaningful and sometimes, the indescribable happens. Sometimes that is in full display and easy to see; it is when we are making all kinds of noise as we learn, grapple, create, debate, compete, and show our work out loud. Oftentimes, however, some of the most remarkable work is in the nuances that are less obvious. Invisible, even.
A school year builds upon itself, day after day, month after month, until the time is right for the light to shine on the enormous range of ways and moments that define our days here at school.
We start this report at the end in the hopes that you are reminded of the way it always ends in June: with us trying to find the words to express the profound growth we have witnessed in our graduates, and
Incredible results.
reflecting on the hundreds of days and thousands of moments that have brought us to another summer, and the start of another Watkinson year.
We start this report with these final images of 202324 so that as you read it, you will take note of the vibrance of the school year, and see not only what happened, but see an essential truth: none of this could have happened without you. As you turn the pages of the year that was, I hope you see yourself in the ways we know to be true. Your belief in Watkinson School and the shape that believing takes is necessary, heartening, and vitally important.
Read on to remember the year that was!
With deepest gratitude,
Teri Schrader Head of School
New Student Orientation Day
Watkinson opened the school year with 212 students, including 60 middle, 150 upper, and 2 PG students.
Grade Level Retreats
Off-campus grade level retreats returned on September 21-22, 2023! Retreats are an essential tool for building school and class culture, and for the first time since 2020, they happened off campus. The middle school went to Camp Hazen, the 9th grade went to Camp Jewell, the 10th grade explored sites and attractions throughout Boston, and the 11th grade visited UConn, Clark University, and the Storrs Adventure Park. Our seniors and Academy students went white water rafting in the Adirondacks. Annually, our students tell us how vital these events are in helping them enter into school and form deep and meaningful relationships with both classmates and teachers.
Annual Parent Breakfast
Every September, parents gather for breakfast to not only connect with one another but also hear from school leaders and the Watkinson Parent Community co-conveners. This year the gathering was boisterous and joyous with more than 100 parents in attendance.
David Watkinson Evening
uThis annual rite of passage is Watkinson’s version of an open house. Parents come to school for a night in October and attend 15-minute versions of their student’s classes. During study halls, parents have dinner together in the Feringa Dining Hall.
Our Most Giving Time of the Year
Years ago, faculty member Andy Aavatsmark dubbed late November “Watkinson’s most giving time of the year.” These weeks mark the confluence of three long-standing traditions. Our annual Turkey Drive, run by our Student Foundation, collects and bags complete Thanksgiving meals and works with Hartford’s United Methodist Church to distribute them. Our Dominican Republic Service Team, our longest-running international service-learning trip, travels to La Romana where they run mobile medical clinics (working with doctors from UConn Health) and work at a local schools and sugarcane work camps. Lastly, our community-wide annual Day of Giving is the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, and this year we raised over $60,000 from 160 donors to benefit our annual fund. It’s a special time of year when our faculty and students hold gratitude and generosity in equal balance.
uUniversity of Saint Joseph and Watkinson School partner to promote academic excellence
In January of 2024, the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) and Watkinson School announced a collaborative partnership that includes a new USJ scholarship for Watkinson seniors, a USJ tuition discount for Watkinson employees, and a reduced tuition rate at Watkinson for the children of USJ employees.
Beginning in fall of 2024, Watkinson graduates with a 3.0 GPA or higher, enrolling in any of USJ’s undergraduate degree programs, will receive the new Independent Scholar Award. This $5,000/ year scholarship is renewable annually for up to four years with continued fulltime enrollment and adherence to USJ’s academic criteria. It may be supplemented by other USJ merit and need-based financial support.
Like USJ, Watkinson prioritizes the implementation of progressive, evidence-
based approaches to teaching. To support this priority, USJ will provide a 30% tuition discount to Watkinson employees. In acknowledgement of the two institutions’ shared values, Watkinson will provide a tuition waiver of up to 25% to the children of USJ employees.
USJ and Watkinson are also developing a concurrent enrollment program through which Watkinson students earn USJ credit for completion of designated Watkinson classes.
“Watkinson emphasizes authentic learning to promote depth of knowledge and skill rather than just content coverage, which readies graduates for success at colleges like USJ, known for small, hands-on classes,” said USJ President Rhona Free.
“Additionally, the Watkinson experience is something many USJ faculty want for their own children, affirming our shared values and educational approach and making this a natural partnership.”
On Saturday, February 10th, Watkinson’s annual gala fundraiser, A Watkinson Affair returned! The school’s twelfth gala of this magnitude took place at the Hartford Marriott Downtown and was a celebration of the magical possibilities that open up for Watkinson students on a daily basis. The gala featured an incredible live and silent auction, a beautiful dinner, a moving video tribute to our school, and of course dancing. At the event, Watkinson celebrated Philanthropists of the Year John and Laura Dake Roche. Proceeds from A Watkinson Affair support Watkinson’s Fund for Everyday Excellence our annual fund.
It was a great year to be a fan of the Watkinson Rams basketball teams. Both the girls and the boys had thrilling and successful seasons, with the boys winning the HVAL tournament and making it to the semi-final game of the NEPSAC tournament.
Prior to hearing the first case, Justice Mullins ‘97 brought greetings including a reflection on his time at Watkinson.
“Watkinson believed in me enough to get me here, and the experience I had here was second to none.”
On Wednesday, March 27, the CT Supreme Court’s “On Circuit” program came to Watkinson. Annually, the court selects a location at which to hear arguments, with the goal of educating students about the role and responsibilities of the judicial branch of our government and specifically the appellate system through this interactive and engaging real-life experience. The court heard two cases, one criminal and one civil, and the students were allowed to ask questions of the attorneys after the cases were presented. Watkinson offers profound thanks to Justice Raheem Mullins ’97 for making this possible.
Head of School Teri Schrader greeted all in attendance, conveying that the day was a chance for Watkinson’s students to get close to the practices of democracy. She encouraged attendees to remember that when the systems of government feel remote, cynicism can emerge. Schrader was thrilled that Watkinson hosted the CT Supreme Court and that our students got to experience and understand the judicial process anew.
Numerous representatives of the court remarked on the rapt attentiveness of Watkinson’s students, most notably Justice Mullins. Chief Justice Richard Robinson commented that the day was “a very proud homecoming for Justice Mullins who speaks highly of Watkinson, and it’s easy to see why.”
The event was preceded by a breakfast where students, faculty, alumni, and trustees were able to greet and speak with the visiting justices.
See the complete opening remarks by Ms. Schrader, Chief Justice Robinson, and Justice Mullins here.
As this report was going to print, Governor Ned Lamont announced his nomination of the Honorable Raheem L. Mullins ’97 to serve as chief justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court.
Oscar-nominated screenwriter David Hemingson ‘82 spent the day on campus
Hemingson is a veteran television writer who in 2023 made one of the most astonishing feature film debuts in recent memory as screenwriter and producer of Focus Features’s widely acclaimed The Holdovers, directed by Oscar winner Alexander Payne. On April 9, 2024, Mr. Hemingson spoke at AllSchool Meeting, led a two-hour masterclass with Creative Arts Program diploma students, and attended 10th- and 6th-grade humanities classes. In the evening, Watkinson held a fundraiser for Grace Scholars at Watkinson, which consisted of a VIP dinner followed by a conversation between Mr. Hemingson and Head of School Teri Schrader, for which attendees could submit questions in advance. Watkinson School is grateful for his generosity of time and attention to our students and our community.
Senior Exhibitions
Robustly celebrated by every member of our community, Senior Exhibitions are the culmination of the year-long personalized inquiry undertaken by every senior. Under the guidance of their Senior Seminar teacher, each senior formulates an essential question, finds a mentor, creates a plan, and embarks on research. In mid winter, seniors are released from their regular classes for two weeks of experiential learning “in the real world.” Upon their return, the seniors begin working on their final product (an object, website, paper, work of art, etc.) that exemplifies their learning and is shared with the Watkinson community. At the end of the year, each senior presents an analysis of and reflection on their year’s work to a panel of assessors who listen, ask questions, and carefully deliberate to render an evaluation. These Exhibitions – attended by students, faculty, parents, and trustees – are deep, meaningful, and memorable displays of authentic student work and learning.

June 3rd was Judy Brown Day!
It was with great joy that we honored Judy‘s 43 years of service to Watkinson School. From an All-School Meeting featuring special guests and a fun video montage to an outdoor afternoon reception, the day was a wonderful celebration of Judy, her family, and our school. To top off the celebration, Judy’s family announced the formation of the Judy Brown Scholarship, earmarked for a student in Watkinson’s LSP program, to make a further impact in the department where Judy spent her career.
If you’d like to make a gift to the Judy Brown Scholarship in honor of her exceptional career, contact Thomas Murphy today.
Watkinson Graduations Are Memorable
On a glorious day in June, Watkinson’s commencement ceremony was a wonderful celebration of the academic accomplishments of an extraordinary class. Part of what makes a Watkinson graduation special is that any senior who wants to speak at graduation can. In 2024, we had 17.
“When I first came to Watkinson, I didn’t want anyone to know me. I wanted to fly under the radar, get in and get out, because that was easier than putting myself out there. I thought if people got to know me they might not like me or get me. And so I spent most of freshman year actively trying to not get noticed, to stay invisible.
But, as we all know, that’s impossible at Watkinson. You can’t hide, and it’s what makes this place special. Because even though it’s hard and terrifying, it helps you grow into such an
amazing person, and it allows you to be proud of being that person.
And so I dug deep and tried to be brave and try new things. I met new people and learned that when I let people in... the craziest thing happened; they got to know me and they didn’t reject me. The opposite happened. They made me feel welcome. They made me feel like I was contributing. They made me feel seen and heard. No more hiding. No more sidelines. Watkinson helped me learn that I should stand tall in the light, for everyone to see. And so today I’m proud to say, I don’t think I’ll ever hide again.”
— excerpted from the graduation speech of Finn Heller ’24, heading to Providence College

Watkinson’s SPHERE summer program (which stands for Supplementary Program for Hartford in Educational Reinforcement and Enrichment) is a five-week tutorial program for 60+ Hartford and East Hartford youth entering grades 1-5. SPHERE successfully integrates personalized hands-on education with enriching summertime recreation. The main goal of SPHERE is to extend learning beyond June to prepare students for September in a caring, fun, and creative environment. Our small classes do this by simultaneously providing personalized and culturally-relevant instruction, addressing any learning gaps that exist, strengthening current academic and interpersonal skills, and building confidence through exposure to the upcoming grade’s content. SPHERE classes are aligned with the Common Core State Standards in literacy and math. In addition, students receive science, art, and technology instruction. The only cost for families is a nominal registration fee.

Wendy Avery
chaired
Board for
WENDY AVERY was a member of Watkinson’s Board for ten years. She succeeded Peter Lisi as Board president and served in that role for seven years. As a board member, she participated in the 2015-16 strategic planning process, and implementing the plan was a prime focus of her tenure. She also partnered with Head of School Teri Schrader to manage the extraordinary leadership challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Head of School Teri Schrader says, “Through Wendy’s work we have expanded and deepened the school community.” Avery was a tireless advocate of a Watkinson education, and as such drew new families and friends into our community. Avery’s profound respect for the way in which the school lives its mission fueled her work to bring Watkinson to the attention of many who were previously unfamiliar with the school’s steadfast commitment to a vigorous intellectual program in the context of a truly inclusive community.
Watkinson School thanks all of the individuals, companies, and organizations for generously supporting our school and mission this year. The following gifts were received between 7/1/236/30/24, and reflect total combined contributions to the school, across all giving programs.

The class of 2024 repeated history this year, following in the footsteps of the class of 2023, by reaching 100% giving. Every senior made a donation to the Watkinson Now Fund to help future students attend Watkinson and have the same amazing opportunities they had.

The Woodruff Society was established to honor individuals who have included the school in their estate plans. The school is grateful to those listed below who have demonstrated their visionary leadership. Watkinson values the opportunity to recognize, during their lifetime, those forward-thinking individuals who are making an especially personal and meaningful gift through their estate plans. Donors are encouraged to let the school know of their plans, if they have not already done so.
