Heather & Beau Wisness are used to being on the go
When the young couple decided to relocate back to Beau’s family farm in McKenzie County in 2007 to begin their family, they probably didn’t realize just how busy they’d be
With their now four children Hazel, Charlie, Clara and Amelia, they find their days spread out between elementary, middle and high school pick up and drop off, along with all the responsibilities that come with parenthood and work
But one thing they always make time for, and find very rewarding, is their children’s activities through Watford City Parks & Recreation
“Our kids have worked their way up through a lot of the Parks & Rec programs There are many opportunities available to kids From gymnastics, to football, to baseball to softball and volleyball, our kids have participatedin many of the things that are available ” said Heather Wisness
Besides getting to stay active, their children find the social attributes and connection with their peers the most rewarding
“Growing up, we did the same sports as all of our friends” said oldest daughter Amelia, now a sophmore at Watford City High School “I think that’s really important to have good people around you and do activites you enjoy ”
Clara, their second oldest, said “I have played basketball with the same group of girls since we were in Little Wolves in elementary school Now we are in Junior High, it gives us confidience to all still be playing together ”
Hazel, the youngest of the Wisness family, finds art classes and spending time with her friends in Gymnastics the most fun She also likes smoothies from The Perks & Rec Coffee shop, even if Mom won’t let her have one everyday
For Charlie, the couples only boy, having a really good coach is a highlight of his time in Parks & Rec tackle football It probably doesn’t hurt that Dad Beau is the playcaller on the sidelines
“I didn’t realize how enjoyable it wold be to get involved and watch the kids grow and learn” said Beau of his time coaching Charlie and his friends
The Rough Rider Center plays a pivotal role in hosting the ever-growing Parks & Rec offerings, and having a central location for activities is beneficial for the Wisness family
“We’re in this facility three or four nights a week” said Heather “It makes family life and shuffling four kids around to many different events at the same time work”
When it comes to getting involved and having an active family life, The Wisness family’s advice to those new to the area, or unsure where to start, is simple
“I think there’s an opportunity for everyone, no matter what your kids or family is interested in. Once you get involved in your kids activities, you get to know their friends and parents Pick something, try something, dive in, volunteer, help, and see how it goes!”

Moving to a new place where you don’t know anybody can be a nerve-wracking experience for anyone, no matter their age.
So, when Nathan Colbach, affectionately known as “Bacon”, came to North Dakota in 2017, getting the opportunity to get involved and join adult recreation programs gave him a natural pathway to connection within the community.
“I was asked to play slow pitch softball with some guys I worked with, they found out I used to play back in Missouri. It started off as a way to hang out with work friends, and then cornhole, and then volleyball. It’s a fun way to meet people and network, and a great way to stay active and keep from going crazy in the winter.”
Nathan’s family soon followed and made the decision to relocate permanently to Watford City Along with his wife Frannie, the couple has three young children that find themselves making the most of the offerings from Watford City Parks & Rec.
“My kids asked about Hockey for quite awhile, but luckily last year some friends and people I work with convinced us to give it a try You never really know how to get started, but people here are really inviting ”
When it comes to breaking the ice and joining a new league or activity, Colbach says it’s made a big impact in their personal life.
“Me getting involved opened doors for my wife to meet people, my kids to make friends Some of my best friends, and friends we consider family, we would have never met them if it had not been for sports and recreation leagues.”
