PUBLISHER’S LETTER The Unexpected Joy of Planning While Austin was still locked down, I had to make a decision about the August issue, this issue you’re now reading. Travel was set for its theme in late 2019—well before COVID-19 began spreading around the globe and dramatically changing so much. Living in a locked-down world, I asked myself over and over, Is travel even going to be possible when this issue hits newsstands? Maybe possible but very different from before? Will an issue about travel feel wrong somehow? I had no way of knowing for certain the answers to those questions, but I strongly suspected that many people might feel differently about traveling as they once had before the pandemic gripped us all. Then the answer came to me one evening as I watched TV. I heard something that resonated and gave me clarity on my dilemma: Planning a vacation increases your endorphins in the same way that actually taking the vacation does. I figured that if this factoid is true, then hip hip hooray, let’s plan a vacay! Every one of us can probably agree that we’re eager to get out there and live life with less trepidation and anxiety again, even if we venture no farther than a different part of Austin or treat ourselves to a little “me time” pampering. Prepare to have your mood lifted as you read this issue that’s full of new and unique places that are local or not too far away that are perfect for a little getaway. Maybe you’ll opt for an escape in place by whipping up one of the amazing cocktails in “Resort in a Glass.” Remember, even if you aren’t comfortable going on a vacation, you can still enjoy that

Eat, Drink and Be Educated Brews, BBQ, Beer Dictionaries and More at New Brewpub The family behind the Pecan Springs Ranch event venue has teamed with PoK-e-Jo’s Smokehouse to open Fitzhugh Brewing Co. on Brewery Row. Everyone is welcome at this new brewpub, including kids and beer novices who might find themselves intimidated at other brewery taprooms. “I went to a few breweries that felt like they were made for beer experts alone,” said co-owner Kerbey Smith when the new brewpub was announced. “I didn’t fit that category, but I still wanted to participate, learn and drink good beer.” When it opens in early autumn, Fitzhugh Brewing will offer not only great beer, BBQ and other treats for the taste buds but also offer dictionary-like beer menus that explain the flavor profile of each available beer along with a pronunciation guide. Patrons will also find suggested food pairings for the beers as well as recipes. Children will be delighted with the outdoor playscape, and they’re sure not be the only ones thrilled to meet Jack and Jenny, the miniature donkeys who’ll live at the brewery. “We want this to be a wildly inclusive place with amazing beers for everyone to enjoy…,” Kerbey explained, “a welcoming place for families and a beautiful space for those wanting to enjoy our gorgeous Texas Hill Country.” Fitzhugh Brewing is located at 15435 Fitzhugh Rd in Dripping Springs and online at fitzhughbrewing.com.

Light Bulb Ed knows that shopping at DoubleTake Austin is a brilliant idea. The recently launched curated thrift shop is located in the one-time home of The Light Bulb Shop, with mascot Light Bulb Ed still gracing the exterior of the building. Inside you’ll find a boutique-like atmosphere with an array of apparel and accessories, home goods and more on-trend items from esteemed brands. The finds are incredible and the bargains are great, and the best part is that purchases benefit Center for Child Protection and its services to Travis County children who’ve been victims of abuse or who have witnessed violent crimes. At press time DoubleTake Austin offers in-person shopping by appointment only. Treasure hunters can book a one-hour session of what the store’s general manager, Lynne Skinner, thinks of as retail therapy. “Resale or thrift shopping is a unique retail experience, which doesn’t always translate well to an online-only environment,” explains Skinner. “We knew there was only one answer: Provide customers with a safe, healthy and anxiety-free setting so they could come in and treasure hunt without concerns about public exposure to the [COVID-19] virus.” All donated items are laundered or sanitized as applicable upon arrival. Appointment-only shopping allows store personnel to sanitize dressing rooms, quarantine items customers tried on and take other precautions. “While this certainly is not the way we had planned to open our business, our efforts have been well-received by customers, and they all leave happy with their experience and their merchandise,” Skinner shares. “In the meantime, the Center for Child Protection is able to expand awareness for our mission and generate new funds and friends for the children we serve.” DoubleTake Austin is located at 6318 Burnet Rd. Book appointments for in-person shopping or donation drop-offs at doubletakeatx.org.

SOPHISTICATED STYLE Reaching the typical decade of retirement is no time to resign oneself to drab duds. The golden years are truly golden with this outfit that has the halter top put together with a great-fitting pair of jeans, an elegant blazer, a statement silk scarf and chic shoes. Pumps are a great choice, but loafers or leopard print flats certainly banish any notion of frumpy and matronly.

BEAUTY

Look Fab for Every Online Confab By Lisa Jauregui Video teleconferences with family, coworkers, friends or other people have become an important part of life in 2020. During this same time many of us have perhaps relaxed our daily beauty routines because, after all, we’re trying to stay at home as much as we can, so getting made up hardly seems worth the bother. But if you’re taking part in online meetings, you definitely want to avoid looking sallow and unkempt. To avoid Zoom gloom, I offer you some tips and tricks to help you look your best on your next video call—even when you’re still in your PJs.

Let There Be Light A video teleconference is essentially a video production, and quality video productions have quality lighting setups. Therefore, you need to think like a cinematographer and work like a lighting technician to set up for your call with the best lighting you can. The best and cheapest lighting setup is natural light from the biggest window in your home. Position yourself so that the light source is illuminating your face. Instant glow achieved! If you don’t have a suitable source for natural light, I recommend purchasing a tabletop ring lamp on a tripod. Some models hold your smartphone or tablet in an optimal 24 WATERWAYS | August 2020

position, and many of them have multiple color modes and brightness levels so that you can find just the right lighting for where you’ve set up.

Best Face for FaceTime For a video call that typically shows just your face, neck and shoulders, you should focus on your face’s skin. Choose a foundation that offers a natural medium coverage and a natural matte finish. Avoid foundations that are too heavy or have too dewy a finish, which can wind up making your face look oily and shiny. If you only own dewy foundations, set your foundation with a loose powder to reduce the shine. Another option is to blot your skin with a Kleenex. Some of my favorite foundations are L’Oreal’s Infallible 24HR Fresh Wear Foundation and Revlon’s PhotoReady Candid Natural Finish Foundation. Both products look natural and leave the skin looking healthy and flawless, plus you can usually find them at your favorite supermarket or drugstore. A little bronzer is perfect to define your features, particularly your cheekbones and jawline. Select one that’s several shades deeper than your foundation and that’s not too orange nor too grey. Physicians Formula’s Murumuru Butter Bronzer line has a range of tones that are perfect for a lot of people. >>

Avoid Zoom gloom by using these tips and tricks to look your best on your next video call—even when you’re still in your PJs.

26 WATERWAYS | August 2020

Keep blush natural and subtle. Use a shade that mimics your skin’s natural flush. Avoid overly bright or overly dark shades as well as any blush with a lot shimmer. A cream blush is great because you can blend it for a natural look. I recommend Maybelline’s Cheek Heat gel-cream blush that’s easy to blend. Those Lips, Those Eyes We communicate with more than the words we speak, but an online video conference doesn’t exactly allow for a lot of body language. Therefore, ensure your eyes are ready to be expressive. Fortunately, you don’t have to radically change up your usual eye makeup routine. Use the same products and shades you typically wear, and spend the time to apply liner to give your eyes a bit of pop. Further enhance your eyes with a volumizing mascara. Some of my favorites are L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise and Chanel’s Le Volume De Chanel. Running short on time? Use a lash primer such as Dior’s Diorshow Maximizer 3D lash primer to amplify lashes. If you’re really rushed, you can probably get away with just eye liner and mascara. Of course, our lips form the words we speak, so you cannot overlook them. You definitely want to apply some color to your lips so they don’t look washed out. Choose a color that best enhances their appearance. Because bright, bold colors can rub off on your teeth, especially if topped with gloss, consider playing it safe by using a neutral shade. Your beauty routine doesn’t have to be extensive or complicated for an online meeting. Stick with products that enhance, and you are ready to go live.

GILDED GETAWAY

In Restoring, Updating Austin’s Commodore Perry Estate, Auberge Launches New

When designer and creative director Ken Fulk first saw the Commodore Perry Estate in the heart of Hyde Park, he was mesmerized. “It was as if a European country estate had been transported to a bucolic Texas Hill Country landscape.” Located on 10 acres, the property once owned by cotton exporter Edgar “Commodore” Perry and wife Lutie is now a hotel resort operated by Auberge Resorts Collection that boasts 54 rooms and suites. As Marco Bustamante, the general manager for the resort describes it, Commodore Perry Estate offers “a new form of modern Texan luxury.”

Urban Location, Otherworldly Getaway The estate is located at Red River and 41st streets, across from Hancock Golf Course and nestled in what is now a very urban section of Austin. However, a visit to the resort transports you to a different time and place. And that’s by design, for Fulk has created a narrative that emanates a whimsy similar to that of the eponymous resort in Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel. In pulling through the driveway, guests are immediately drawn into another world thanks to Fulk’s attention to detail and the on-site staff. Take in the 11,000 square-foot Italian renaissance mansion built in 1928. Drink up the lush English gardens, and be dazzled by the 50-foot swimming pool harkening back to a long ago age. From the theater of it all to the incredible history that’s still evident throughout the sprawling green property, Commodore Perry Estate offers an all-encompassing experience, not just a hotel stay.

A Grand History The estate was for the Perry family a summer social house, just three miles from their city house. They first took up residence in the era of flappers, Model As and grand gatherings in spite of Prohibition. The family enjoyed the property for nearly two decades, but the patriarch declared it to be “a great place to throw a party but too big to live in.” In 1944 the Perrys sold the estate to St. Mary’s Academy, and over the years the property changed hands but mainly served as an educational facility. Native Austinite and property developer Clark Lyda bought the estate about a decade ago with plans to restore it to its former glory. He’d become acquainted with it when he attended high school on the grounds when it was home to the Christian Academy of Austin in the 1970s. Lyda always felt a connection to the place and knew one day he wanted to create something grand, a place modern Austinites could escape to, just as the Perry family had nearly a century ago. >>

August 2020 | WATERWAYS 31

Restoring the estate took many years and involved the collaborative efforts of architecture and design firms Moule and Polyzoides, Ten Eyck Landscape Architects and Clayton & Little. Although the mansion had suffered to some degree from years of neglected maintenance, it wasn’t beyond saving. Says Bustamante, “One hundred years later we’re lucky it’s still here.” Some of the most marvelous details of the mansion are original elements that have been restored or returned. The restoration of its iron front door was six years in the making. The original fixtures were reinstalled in the solarium, and its bold Moroccan tile floor is once again glorious. The lounge invites relaxation once more with its original fireplace and decorative stucco accents, and the wood paneling in the oval-shaped library beckons readers and thinkers.

Known for his layered, quirky, colorful approach to design, Fulk worked these past four years to marry his aesthetic vision for this modern resort with the impressive architecture. He brought in muralist Deborah Phillips to paint angelic Italian-style frescos on the vaulted ceiling above the mansion’s spiral staircase and to create a stunning 20-foot Texas pastoral scene at the Inn, a new construction on the property where most of the guest rooms are located. The real showstoppers perhaps are the five signature suites in the mansion named after the Perry family. The Mr. Perry Suite contains a handmade wooden pencil post canopied bed, vintage pieces from all over the world and safari-inspired patterns, an homage to the businessman’s globetrotting. The Mrs. Perry Suite by contrast features a 1970s chrome-and-brass canopy bed with an upholstered pink velvet headboard along with pink walls and pink drapes from French fabric house Pierre Frey. >>

experiences at Austin’s Barley Swine and Odd Duck. The resort’s garden restaurant plans to serve Texas heritage cuisine made with many ingredients grown right there on the resort. “It is with great pride that we bring this beautiful property to life with a relaxed elegance that evokes the true spirit and uniqueness of Austin,” said Bustamante on the eve of the resort’s opening “We are excited for the local community and guests to gather and unwind alongside contemporary glamour, whimsical soul and relaxed luxury.” Visit aubergeresorts.com/commodoreperry to book your own getaway in the heart of Austin.

The 42 guest rooms and seven terrace suites at the threestory Inn feature equally beautiful designs. “To build upon this utterly unique environment, we strived to craft experiences that combined a relaxed European elegance with true gracious Texas hospitality,” Fulk explains. “Despite the fact that some of the spaces are quite grand, there is an ease and comfort to every experience that will welcome members and visitors to sit back and enjoy themselves.” Other amenities that guests and visitors to Commodore Perry Estate can enjoy is Lutie’s Garden Restaurant, slated to open this autumn. Overseeing this endeavor are Bradley Nicholson and Susana Querejazu, who bring with them their

EVERYDAY RELAX BIG-TIME IN TINY HOUSE MOVEMENT-INSPIRED CABINS AT GETAWAY HILL COUNTRY By Jessi Devenyns

Jacob’s Well

36 WATERWAYS | August 2020

Escaping the everyday demands of modern living and getting back to basics is as close as Wimberley. Opened in early 2020, Getaway Hill Country is a soft-spoken concept nestled in the rolling hills where space and time are abundant and to-do lists are short. Calm has a way of descending from the treetops to drift over the hiking trails and through the cabins to allow guests to unwind. Alone or with companions, a stay here allows you to put the brakes on the pace of the everyday.

Serenity So Close This quiet gem about an hour’s drive from Austin is a collection of tiny cabins on 60 acres of cedar and oak trees. Available on the property, called the Outpost, are 32 one-bed and eight two-bed cabins, and each bed is a queen-size one to assure plenty of sleeping space for occupants. Guests can expect fresh bed linens, bath towels and shower products in the private bathroom. The micro cabins also are equipped with central heat and air conditioning and a small kitchen complete with a two-burner stove, sink, a few cooking implements and the grilling essentials of salt, pepper and olive oil. Like a minibar in a traditional hotel room, other provisions are available for purchase and added to your tab if you avail yourself to them. What you get with a getaway to Getaway that you won’t get at a traditional hotel is solitude that’s broken only by the crackle of a campfire or the crush of foliage underneath the shoes of the occasional passerby following one of the endless paths on the property. >>

Jon Staff and Pete Davis to encourage guests to disconnect from the daily hustle and bustle by unplugging and instead interacting with nature. “Getaway’s mission is to provide people the time, space and permission to be ‘off,’” shared Staff. To help guests accomplish this goal, each cabin is equipped with a lockbox into which cellphones and iPads can be stored for a day, a weekend or, for the brave folks, an entire week. Divorcing eyes from screens is only one aspect of the Getaway experience. Another component woven into the Getaway Hill Country experience is a return to timeless basics. Everything from the design of the cabins to the outdoor living room with its firepit, picnic table and weatherkissed Adirondack chairs coaxes individuals outdoors. The calming natural aesthetic of each tiny cabin’s interior design and décor creates a seamless transition between the rustic outdoors and the indoor creature comforts. As a result guests can doze off watching the stars or awaken to the first rays of sunlight peeping through the trees. Calm, healthy living also extends to man’s best friend at Getaway. Staff explains on the Getaway website, “City living isn’t always easy on our furry friends. In the stress of our day-to-day, it’s common that we find ourselves craving more time to spend outside, away from our computers or inside our offices—and our pups may be feeling that same hankering.” By cultivating unstructured time, Staff hopes to help people create separation and carve out a space to relax and recharge, even if it’s only for a weekend. “We want people to get back to the basics, disconnect from technology and immerse themselves in nature,” Staff said. “Taking a break from the city, technology and work will ultimately lead to a happier and healthier life.” Getaway Hill Country is located at 1405 Pump Station Rd in Wimberley and online at getaway.house.

Instead of on-site spas, restaurants with celebrity chefs and other attractions offered by hotels and resorts, Getaway Hill Country offers guests ample cozy nooks to dive into a good book and miles of nature to explore. In fact, the nearby hiking trails lead to Hill Country treasures like the Blue Hole Regional Park and the Cypress Creek Nature Trail and Preserve. If you want to swim you can visit swimming holes such as Jacob’s Well. If you want to imbibe in a more social setting, you can head to Driftwood Estate Winery, Middleton Brewing or The Leaning Pear.

Fredericksburg has a lot of attractions and several charming bed-and-breakfast cottages. For something different consider a stay in an historic Pullman Palace sleeper railcar. The 1894 Private Pullman Palace Car, operated by 1st Class Lodging Reservation Service, is an authentic Pullman car once owned by cattleman and rancher Samuel Burk Burnett to stylishly travel between Fort Worth and his 6666 Ranch in King County. President Theodore Roosevelt, a frequent guest at the ranch, used the car himself in 1905 for a trip from Fort Worth to Frederick, Oklahoma. The railcar now sits on a private lot two blocks off Fredericksburg’s picturesque Main Street, thus you can walk to almost all the town’s attractions. Entering the car’s drawing room, filled with antiques and period memorabilia, is like stepping back in time. Continue down the corridor to discover just how expansive the Pullman is. There’s a compartment for drinks or playing cards, two bathrooms, a spacious bedroom with a queen-size bed and finally a kitchen in the back outfitted with a mini fridge, microwave, wine glasses and other basics you might need. The Pullman car may be a piece of history, but it offers modern comforts.

FOR THE HOME

Concrete Vision Bringing New Life to an 80s-Era Hill of Life Home Project Narrative + Photography Courtesy of CG&S Design-Build In 1984 near the Barton Creek Greenbelt trail access at the Hill of Life was built what’s believed to be the first concrete earth dwelling in Austin. Tucked into the hillside, this unassuming brick box of a home was sited to take advantage of the sweeping views of the greenbelt. The current homeowners recently hired Austin’s own CG&S Design-Build to allow more natural light into the dwelling, to modernize the interior and to create a museum-like setting for their art collection. Before the remodel the property was essentially a time capsule of 1980s design. The home’s foot-thick concrete walls and drop ceilings made the interior dark and cavelike, and the 5 feet of earth on the roof, meant to be the home’s septic field, contributed to this feeling.

Kitchen

Kitchen before

PROJECT PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREA CALO. PROJECT DESIGN BY CG&S DESIGN-BUILD; SARAH HADDEN, DESIGN LEAD. INTERIOR DESIGN BY GREGORY GRAMMER/SHORELINES INTERIORS.

Originally located deep in the dark back of the house, the kitchen is now adjacent to the living and dining areas to achieve an open concept and to bring natural light into the heart of the home. The old kitchen area the CG&S team transformed into a home office, wine room and mudroom.

Living room before

Living Room To bring in natural light, the firm removed a significant portion of the rear concrete wall to make way for large sliding glass doors and picture windows. The old drop ceiling was banished, and recessed lighting was installed. The CG&S team painted the interior a crisp white, a dramatic change from the original yellowed textured wallpaper. One original element the firm preserved is the home’s original terrazzo floors. One highlight is the new two-sided fireplace that replaced the living room’s original 80s-style brass-trimmed art cubbies. The living room side of the fir place features a floating stone mantel and hearth, which doubles as additional seating, as well as vibrant tile by Oceanside Glass & Tile selected and arranged by Gregory Grammer of Shorelines Interiors.

FOR THE HOME

Master bedroom before

To help the master suite feel more proportionate, the team removed dated built-in storage and then transformed a windowless office complete with a walk-in vault into the master closet. A windowless storage room gained a large picture window and became part of the ensuite bathroom. The ensuite bathroom is the true gem of the home. The original bathroom didn’t have any natural light, so the space felt cramped and uninviting. After entirely gutting the space, the CG&S team installed a large steam shower, a separate toilet room, large his-and-hers vanity areas along with a tub niche, the focal point of the bathroom. The tub niche is clad in sophisticated tile, and within the space is a freestanding tub hand-carved from a single block of silver travertine. A large picture window fills the room with lots of natural light and allows anyone in the tub to soak up views of the sweeping landscape while soaking in luxury. Master bath before

IN GOOD SPIRITS

It’s been 32 years since The Beach Boys sang about a tropical drink melting in your hand down in Kokomo, where you want to go to get away from it all. Lately, getting away from it all for some folks has meant stealing away to the back patio or porch, perhaps the backyard pool, to relax for a bit. Turn that next small break into an escape with an assist from your imagination and a very real resort-style frozen drink in your hand. If you need inspiration for a brightly colored, fruity adult beverage to whip up, look no further than Pool Bar at East Austin Hotel. It’s been serving what it calls refurbished resort drinks poolside since it opened in May 2019. “The goal of our refurbished resort drink program is to bring all the fun of classic beach-y vacation drinks but without the artificial ingredients and chemical mixers,” says Jason Stevens, Director of Bars and Beverage for the hotel and its fellow La Corsha Hospitality Group hotels and restaurants. “We use real ingredients and actual fruit while dialing down the sweetness and balancing the overall drink.” 56 WATERWAYS | August 2020

A Beach Vacay Is Just a Drink Away

Perhaps the most iconic element of a tropical resort drink is its garnish. You won’t find kitschy plastic novelty straws or cocktail picks at Pool Bar. “In addition to the natural ingredients, we use aromatic leaves, tropical flowers, bamboo straws and dehydrated fruits for our garnishes to bring bright pops of color to the cocktails instead of using plastic pieces that clog up the environment,” Stevens explains. Stevens and Pool Bar share two drink recipes so you too can experience a resort retreat at home.

1½ cups ice (more or less for desired consistency) Small pinch of salt

Stevens notes that when preparing this very adaptable recipe, you can easily use many kinds of frozen fruits, especially other berries. “Frozen raspberries and blackberries work especially well. Just replace the same amount of whatever fruit you choose for the strawberries.”

BLUE CHI CHI 2 ounces vodka or white rum 1 ounce coconut syrup, preferably Giffard Noix de Coco syrup 1 ounce blue curaçao, preferably Giffard Curaçao Bleu specialty liqueur 2 ounces fresh pineapple juice 1 ounce coconut water 1 ounce lime juice Dash of Bittermens Elemakule Tiki Bitters, optional but optimal Few grains of salt Combine all the ingredients in a shaker, and then shake hard for 15 seconds. Strain the liquid into a tall, exotic glass filled with crushed ice. Garnish with pineapple spear, lime wheel and an edible flower. Tropical Tips Whether preparing one of these drinks or a different one, consider these tips and tricks that Stevens uses to make Pool Bar’s tropical drinks so tasty and fun. 58 WATERWAYS | August 2020

If that drink is going to melt in your hand, then it needs ice. “Tropical drinks love crushed ice,” he says. “If you don’t have crushed ice at home, put freezer ice into a towel or a clean canvas tote bag. Whack it a few times with a rolling pin.” Not only do you get crushed ice, but you also get a bit of stress relief. A blender is often necessary for making tropical drinks, but they can be a pain to clean up and sometimes are just too big for a solitary drink. Stevens recommends a Magic Bullet or similar personal blender for making “excellent, smaller-scale frozen drinks for a fraction of the cost of a large, powerful blender, such as a Vitamix.” As mentioned earlier, presentation is a key part of any resort-style drink. Start first with the vessel in which the drink is served. “Elaborate and exotic glassware is always fun. Beyond the classic tiki mugs and margarita glasses, natural cups made from real coconuts are inexpensive, easy to find online and pool-friendly.” He adds, “If you’re looking for a unique and elaborate take on the classic hurricane glass, check out craft beer glasses, especially Libbey’s thistle glass.” For the final touch, Stevens urges home bartenders to stick to all-natural garnishes, including fruit, flowers, herbs and tropical leaves. “Even dried spices such as whole bay leaves or star anise make incredible and easy garnishes.” Pool Bar at East Austin Hotel is available to hotel guests and to people who’ve purchased a pool pass or dining pass. Clean, Healthy Hands

What’s your best advice for preventing damage from frequent exposure to soap and warm water as well as household disinfecting agents? While you certainly don’t want to change anything about the recommended technique for washing your hands and cleaning under your nails to stay safe, you can use a soap formulated for sensitive skin. This type of soap tends to be far gentler on your skin than regular soaps while still achieving the sanitary goal. When cleaning around the house and elsewhere, wearing gloves to protect your hands is extremely important.

The types of products typically used on the face—gentle washes, exfoliants, serums and creams—can be wonderful for rough and dehydrated hands. As for specific ingredients, water-based lotions absorb quickly. Aloe and vitamin E are always a plus. Can hand lotion or cream address damaged fingernail cuticles? Or do cuticles need different products to truly address the damage? Products such as serums or thick creams may be a “two birds with one stone” solution. Another option is fish oil. If you are taking a capsule fish oil supplement, pop it open and massage the oil inside into your cuticles. You can apply it nightly until your cuticles are healed and supple, and then you can repeat this treatment once a week or when your cuticles start to appear dry again. For cuticles with damage beyond being dry and unkempt, I recommend seeking out a product specifically for cuticles. Laurel Corrinne has more than a decade of experience as an esthetician and has studied a variety of techniques and disciplines. In 2016 she opened Laurel Corrinne Studio, which is located at 1107 S 8th St and at

Can you recommend any specific type of skin care product or specific ingredients that can help remediate the damage to the skin on the hands? 60 WATERWAYS | August 2020

Using a sufficient amount of soap with warm water. Singing “Happy Birthday” twice while vigorously scrubbing. Drying thoroughly with a single-use towel. Repeating repeatedly throughout the day. The frequent handwashing that has become vital can easily wreak havoc on hands and nail cuticles. Dry skin can crack open, be painful and even become vulnerable to infection. Laurel Corrinne, licensed esthetician and owner of Laurel Corrinne Studio, offers some tips for keeping hands healthy while keeping them clean.

Life Flight

Ray Wilkerson, Dr. John “Chip” Oswalt

For Children with Heart Defects,

Traveling abroad can be the getaway of a lifetime. For the young recipients of HeartGift’s services, travel abroad brings a new lease on life. Approximately one in 100 babies born each year is diagnosed with a congenital heart defect. Austin-based heart surgeon Dr. John “Chip” Oswalt knew well that many such defects can be repaired surgically, sometimes with a single procedure, but not all children around the world have access to this care. Thus some 20 years ago Dr. Oswalt teamed with Ray Wilkerson and others to form HeartGift to bridge the care gap. “Most of these children would not survive past their first birthday without medical intervention,” notes HeartGift CEO Christy Casey-Moore. “Consistently, not only do we see an improved life for the child but also the parents and caregivers of these children.” Over the past two decades, the nonprofit organization has helped almost 500 children born with heart defects from nearly 35 countries. It works with groups overseas to identify children age 14 and younger who have a heart defect affecting both ventricles that can be repaired with one surgery. The child and a parent travel to Austin or one of the cities where HeartGift has chapters—Houston, San Antonio and New Orleans—so that the child can undergo surgery and receive postsurgical care for four to five weeks. The care provided each recipient costs about $25,000, but this figure includes related expenses such as prescrip-

tions, travel to and from the U.S. and more. The participating medical professionals and facilities donate their professional fees and services. Says Kristi Jones, the organization’s marketing and community relations director, “For every dollar HeartGift pays for care, we receive approximately $12 in donated medical services. In 2018, the amount we paid to hospitals was $596,323, and the value of medical services received was $7.4 million.” Says Dr. Oswalt, “Anyone who works with HeartGift gets as much out of it as these heart patients and their parents do, I have no doubt about that.” Learn more about HeartGift at heartgift.org.
