PUBLISHER’S LETTER

We did it, y’all! We made it through the scorching Austin summer, and we’ve found our way into blessedly fresher fall. I don’t know about you, but as the temperatures drop, my motivation for going outside goes up—right along with my excitement to eat. Now that I know I won’t be sweating buckets the second I step out of my door and the killer heat isn’t hanging around to kill my appetite, I’m over here making lots of plans to gather with family and friends over some delicious bites and beverages. Luckily for me and for you, dear reader, this city has an oh-so-impressive food and drink scene, which is ever-growing and changing just like its skyline. Considering that all of these new places are regularly popping up in Austin, my husband Drew and I have fallen into the habit of going to a new bar or restaurant at least once a month. Oops, did I just imply that we’re a boring old married couple? In reality, our little monthly adventures around town are precisely what keep things from getting boring. What’s humdrum about picking out an interesting new place, getting pampered with the service, embarking on a culinary adventure and letting ourselves literally ‘wine’ down after a long day? As you wake up from your heat-induced summer hibernation and your hunger for good fare and fun comes roaring back, let this issue be your guide to some of the best bars, bites and beverages to see, savor and sip. I hope these pages will help kick-start your own exciting excursions around our incredible city and at home—

PUBLISHER: Jackie McGrath jackie@waterwaysmagazine.com ASSISTANT PUBLISHER Kim Ortiz kim@waterwaysmagazine.com

and maybe, just maybe, our culinary adventures will cross paths one day. Remember, life is too short to eat boring food.

What’s in Store This Fall? By Edith Henry, Stylist and Image Consultant Fall in Texas. Will it ever get here? With our record-breaking temperatures over the spring and summer, it seems almost implausible that it will cool down enough to take advantage of some of the trends that were gracing the runways of Paris, Milan, NYC and the like last September. With every new season, however, comes a new group 8 WATERWAYS | October 2022

of bold, statement-making fashion trends worth incorporating into your wardrobe. But which ones will actually work for your lifestyle are as varied as, well, your lifestyle. Are you more of a minimalist, or what the fashion industry this past spring dubbed ‘Clean Girl’ style? Her closet consists of pieces that are simultaneously comfortable

and sophisticated. Or is your style closer to Dopamine Dressing, which is based on the idea that wearing clothes we like can activate the release of dopamine, the feelgood chemical, in our systems? Dopamine Dressing is wearing things that bring us joy. These trends as we move into fall could be great for you, but what other trends are coming? Most are all about the basics—simple, everyday pieces that you probably invested in long ago—and the top five pieces we’ll describe for you are all in the must-have (and probably already-have) category for Fall 2022.

White tank tops and black trousers are the season’s ‘It’ items, but you don’t have to wear them in a toned-down or business-casual way. Wearing them in an unexpected way will give a fresh look to these classic staples. For Fall 2022, rock your white tank with oversized pants, such as baggy trousers, parachute pants, or the popular wide-leg jean. (Get ready to see those everywhere.) Pair with a structured blazer, and suddenly you have a chic, on-trend, casual and polished outfit that can take you almost anywhere in style. As for black trousers, we all have at least one pair. But >>

October 2022 | WATERWAYS 9

these simple staple pieces are not just for the office and dressy events anymore. On Fall 2022 runways, they were treated the same way your denim would be! Although you may feel inclined to reach for a blouse and a blazer, adding a plaid or graphic old T-shirt and sneakers is another way to wear timeless pants. It’s a balanced look that can essentially take you from work to play. And speaking of blazers, this is our next Fall 2022 find. Blazers are the one sure piece that will pull your outfit together. No matter which type you choose, you can layer it over anything from sweater dresses to jumpsuits, or a metallic dress paired with boots for that final touch as something special. Do not head into fall without this wardrobe staple on the top 5 list: an LBD (little black dress). LBDs have always had the reputation of being one of the most versatile pieces you can own, which is probably why they have returned, full speed ahead. The LBD is a blank canvas, the perfect piece to make all your own. Make it appropriate for virtually any occasion by thoughtfully choosing accessories, and express your creativity and flair. Try layers of necklaces, a belt, chunky boots or whatever speaks to you. The last must-have item for Fall 2022 is the top-handle bag, a handbag carried by hand, not on the shoulder or as a crossbody piece. It can also act as a crossbody depending on the strap options. Whether super-tiny, extra-large or somewhere in the middle, top-handle bags reigned supreme on the Fall 2022 runways. This classic, elegant design was seen at Coach, Versace, Valentino, and Chloé shows. Have a vintage version of your own? It will fit right in this season. Although this bag tends to feel fancy at times, it can be casual, too. Use it to add unexpected elevation to your joggers and jeans, or carry a solid, neutral design to balance out a bright look. As is the case with all seasons, multiple trends hit the catwalk the year before that foreshadow what we will be wearing and carrying. The same is true for Fall 2022. There are, of course, more trends than the aforementioned five, but concentrating on these five faves may help some of us save on unneeded purchases by wearing what we already own in a new way. That’s great for our bank accounts and the environment. Thank you, fashion industry!

THEIR MUST-TRY DISHES By Cindy Brzostowski

There are two kinds of people in this world: those who research the menu before going to a new restaurant and those who make a down-to-the-wire decision when the waiter comes to the table. Whether you consider yourself in the first camp or the second, it’s always helpful to know which dishes, if any, the establishment deems their signature or must-try option. After all, if the restaurant itself identifies a specific menu item as one of its best, you know it has to be something special.

interior design, florals and event planning for their top tips on hosting at home. Whether you want to decorate with unique flower arrangements or set up a bar with custom cocktails, you’ll be able to host a stylish evening at home that will have you eagerly looking forward to the next one.

INVITE YOUR GUESTS Once you’ve set the guest list, you’ll want to give your guests plenty of notice so they can save the date. According to Becky Navarro, founder of Pearl Events Austin, “Invitations should go out two to four weeks before the event depending on the formality of the event.” She notes that the invitation should set the tone for the dinner’s formality and attire, so consider whether you prefer a digital invite (for less formal gatherings) or a mailed design. >>

Fitzhugh Brewing is all about inclusion, welcoming beer newbies and aficionados alike. ALL are welcome, so we hope you’ll come kick back and enjoy the Texas Hill Country with great food and cold drinks. Our beers are unique and inspired by global destinations, but our dedication to finding and honing recipes of the past is what sets us apart. We’re recognized for our old-world beer styles and recipes, and for creating classic or forgotten beers with a fresh take. We’re excited to welcome our newest staff member and head chef, Andrew Lange, to the Fitzhugh team. Since childhood, Chef Andrew has been passionate about the culinary arts. Growing up in central Texas, he developed a love for Mexican cuisine and barb-que. At 16, he began cooking at a small scratch steakhouse in rural Minnesota. He then returned to Austin to attend Le Cordon Bleu Academy of the Culinary Arts. Since then, Chef Andrew has honed his culinary skills, and since joining us, he has re-vamped our menu. It now boasts favorites like the Texas Hot Chicken Sandwich, fried fish tacos, bacon cheddar burger, and pork belly with a bourbon glaze and roasted jalapeno sauce. He’s excited to join the Fitzhugh team and create one-of-a-kind experiences for our guests. USE YOUR SURROUNDINGS If your dining room is your go-to, think again. Weather-permitting, your outdoor space is actually a great spot to host guests for a dinner alfresco. “Use your backyard as a serene setting to balance formal dining with outdoor grilling,” suggests Raquel Skrobarczyk, owner and principal of Heather Scott Home & Design. According to Josy Johnson of Wild Vine Floral, you can source décor from your surroundings as well. “Visit your own yard for a branch or a humble native plant to bring texture and interest to your home arrangements,” she advises. “Or, ask a neighbor who gardens if you could have a few snips of something unique. You’d be surprised how generous gardeners are as they usually like to share.”

SHOP YOUR SPACE

PERSONALIZED TOUCHES Because you’ll be entertaining at home, it never hurts to add a few personal touches to your dinner party to make it all the more special. Skrobarczyk recommends small monogrammed napkins, but you can also consider place cards or personalized menus at each seat.

While hosting a dinner party can seem like a daunting task, there are many easy ways to transform your home and treat yourself and your guests to a cozy evening in your abode. cocktail glasses and napkins, you can even take it one step further and design a menu with options for your guests.

GIFT YOUR GUESTS CREATE A BAR Whether you want to serve a signature cocktail or just want a spot for guests to grab a refill, Skrobarczyk recommends setting up a bar cart near the dining area. “A bar cart is always a favorite stylish way to give your guests an area to serve themselves a refreshing drink.” In addition to putting out

Though it may be hard to top the party itself, you can consider gifting your guests with a small token to end the evening. According to Johnson, “Keep in mind that it’s fun to give away flowers at the end of the night to your guests, or maybe just to those who stuck around and lent a hand cleaning up. Giving guests beautiful flowers will make your party memorable.”

You may not realize it, but you may already have all the décor you need right at home. According to Johnson, you can use old pitchers or mason and jam jars to display florals on the dinner table and throughout the entertaining space. “Check out local antique or thrift shops nearby for interesting finds as well,” she says. “Vessels or vases with a similar color theme can help tie a color palette together, especially if they are of various heights and sizes.” Once you’ve found your vessel, be sure your floral arrangements aren’t taller than six inches so guests will be able to see each other across the table.

Waikiki Beach on the Hawaiian island of Oahu has long been the stuff of dreams. As one of the most popular honeymoon spots in the world, the famed locale conjures up images of romance, miles of pristine beach and luxurious Hawaiian flair. In the mid-20th century, celebrities began to frequent Waikiki, turning it into a sophisticated, jet-setting playground on some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Decades back, stars such as Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Amelia Earhart and Joe DiMaggio flocked to Waikiki. But it was Elvis Presley who really put it on the map when he began performing there and filming several movies at the location. Later, in the Seventies and Eighties, it gained more fame with the massive television hits Hawaii Five-0 and Magnum, P.I. Today, luxury retail stores and award-winning restaurants line the boulevards, while five-star hotels trace the water’s edge. However, if you lift up the edges of its glitzy glamour, you can still find traces of the old, classic Waikiki. Here are my picks for where to go to experience the iconic Waikiki of yesteryear.

MINDFULNESS

On-the-Spot Stress Solutions By Stephanie Puente, Certified Life Coach

“Feelings come and go like clouds in a windy sky. Conscious breathing is my anchor.” —Thich Naht Hanh Between the fast pace of modern living and the technology that keeps us distracted, detached and in a constant state of “busyness,” it can feel like our human nervous systems hardly stand a chance. We live in a constant state of low-level stress, which affects everything from hormones and aging to quality of sleep and mood. Notice if your shoulders are a little tense, your jaw is clenched or your breathing is shallow throughout the day. You may be so used to it, that’s just your normal baseline. You don’t identify it as real stress because it’s not dramatic. But it takes a toll on your health and well-being because when you’re at a low level of stress all the time, you can’t heal properly. And eventually, this becomes unsustainable. Something has to give. Dr. Charles H. Mayo of the Mayo Clinic said, “Worry and stress affect the circulation, the heart, the glands and the whole nervous system, and profoundly affects heart action.” The good news is that we have a fairly good grasp of how stress works and how to alleviate it. We know what activates the stress response (the sympathetic nervous system) and what activates our relaxation response (the 38 WATERWAYS | October 2022

parasympathetic nervous system). Most importantly, we know how to control stress. Yes, you can turn stress off if you work with your biology. Here’s a short list of stress solutions to activate your parasympathetic nervous system within seconds and take control of how you feel throughout the day.

1. Diaphragm Breathing Anytime someone tells you to breathe, doesn’t it seem too simple? It seems that way, but breathing is completely underrated. Slow, deep, controlled breathing is the quickest and easiest way to turn off the fight-or-flight response and get relaxed and focused. Army Rangers, martial artists and professional athletes all use breathing techniques to get into an optimal state of relaxation because they know it actually enhances their performance. Here’s one great technique: • Inhale through your nose for four counts deep into your belly. • Hold for four counts. • Exhale slowly for eight counts through your mouth as if you’re blowing into a straw. • Repeat for two minutes. Sometimes you can start to feel relaxed within seconds >>

Creating Your Family’s Legacy Creating a Legacy through Portraits. By Kim Ortiz, Kim Ortiz Portrait Art

If the last two years have taught us anything, it’s that family is important and memories and portraits are all we have left to hold on to. As the holiday season approaches, we should think about how we can capture the moments that are special to us and leave a legacy for our children and grandchildren.

DECORATE YOUR WALLS WITH LOVE. A home is not made up of just things. It is made up of memories, laughter, celebrations and those special family gatherings like Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. We look back at all these moments and we can remember the laughter, joy, food, scents, and people in our family who have come together to enjoy time together. But as time passes, these memories fade if there is nothing to remind us of them. This is why it is so important to capture these special moments in portraits that decorate our walls so when we look at them, they jog our memories to relive again in our minds and in our hearts. Decorating the walls with wall portraits is decorating your home with LOVE. Prior to the digital age, families had portraits done and these portraits hung on the wall and are passed down for generations. They are like art in the museum, but these art pieces are hanging in the home. Unlike the hundreds of selfies and pictures we have on our social media or iPhones which could disappear forever if the technology fails, a beautiful painted portrait or framed wall portrait of your family, children, or dogs becomes a treasure to enjoy daily, lives forever, and is a gift we can give ourselve and our family.

GRANDPARENTS AND GRANDCHILDREN. One of my favorite portrait sessions are of grandparents with the grandchildren. As someone who never knew my grandparents, I think it is so important for families to create these type of generational portraits. You and your children will be able to treasure these portraits forever. The bond of Grandparents and their grandchildren are so special. Many would say they love being grandparents more than being parents. Don’t wait until the perfect time for that generational portrait, especially if your parents are in their 70s.

on the walls are portraits of dogs. Today, dogs are like children to many couples. From Millenials who choose dogs as their children, or empty nesters who love their dogs like their children because their children have grown up and moved on to having their own families. Dogs are with us only for a limited time. We want to have them live forever and is it so important to have portraits of our dogs while they are young and healthy. Don’t wait until your dog is a senior or older than 10 years old. They gray like humans as they age and lose their energetic fun personality. The portraits of your dogs on your walls will let them live forever so you can always remember them even after they are no longer with you.

PRINTS LAST FOREVER. With the invention of the digital camera, everyone wants digitals, but the reality is that prints last forever and digitals are dependent on the technology it’s saved on. Prints look beautiful and there are so many choices in products to display your portraits from portrait boxes, to wall art that are classic like painted portraits or modern acrylic.

MINDFULNESS

during a single breath cycle. Anytime you can take even one slow deep breath, it’s a good thing. Sometimes it takes a few minutes to really feel calm, however, so setting a timer for two minutes is a good practice throughout the day to reset.

2. Mindfulness Practices A good mindfulness practice is anything that puts you into a calm, meditative state. One great way to achieve this is by communing with nature. Studies show that simply walking in the forest is calming to us. Our nervous system relaxes when we are surrounded by nature. You can take a forest walk to feel the serenity of the trees or a lake stroll to feel the hypnotic trance of the water lapping at the shore. Or, you can simply sit on a porch swing

gazing at the stars and letting the motion relax you. Even going out in your yard or visiting your neighborhood park and walking through the grass can help. Any way that you can immerse yourself in nature can help to increase mindfulness and turn off the stress response. The second way to create mindfulness is meditation. If you’re a beginner, download an app such as the “Insight Timer” that will ease you into a meditation practice with guidance. It will take away the guesswork and smooth the transition to getting into the habit. If you feel more comfortable meditating on your own, simply get into a restful position, set a timer for however long you want to meditate (5 to 20 minutes is a good start), close your eyes and focus on your breath. That’s it! You actually can’t get it wrong. Thoughts are going to pop up, and that’s perfectly fine. The idea that meditation is supposed to clear your mind completely is a myth. Simply allow your thoughts in, and observe them as if you’re observing clouds passing in the sky. Allow them to exist without trying to edit, control or judge yourself. Just let them pass through. Here’s a bonus tip: If you start making to-do lists and can’t let your thoughts pass through without engaging, give yourself permission to make your to-do lists. Once you’ve written everything down that you don’t want to forget, you can then start your timer and will have an easier time relaxing.

3. Yoga Yoga is a way to bring harmony to your mind, body and spirit. And all three are brought together with the breath. When performed properly, yoga combines the breathing and mindfulness discussed above. An easy way to get started is to look for YouTube videos that teach beginning yoga poses. There are a ton of videos out there, so just pick one that you enjoy. You don’t have to be flexible or in great shape. Some poses are as easy as sitting with a straight spine and breathing. Simply focusing on your breath throughout a pose is enough to activate your parasympathetic response. Sure, you can take a 90-minute class. But as yoga teachers will often tell you, “A little yoga all of the time is better than a lot of yoga some of the time.” A few minutes every day goes a long way. Whether you choose yoga, meditation or a simple breathing technique, all of these methods for reducing stress and resetting your nervous system are effective. It doesn’t matter which one you choose. The most important thing is to notice when stress is there and then doing something to release it. The more consistently you interrupt stress in your system, the better you will feel in the moment and over time.
