At Waterville Creates, community is at the core of everything that we do. We believe that all people should have access to outstanding arts opportunities and that shared experiences in the arts build stronger, happier, and healthier communities. In 2023, our first full year in the Paul J. Schupf Art Center, we took a huge leap forward in delivering on our mission of arts experiences for all. Attendance numbers soared as people of all ages and backgrounds engaged with film, theatre, music, visual arts, pottery, and a wide range of art-making opportunities.
Of course, the numbers documented in this report only tell part of the story. Schoolchildren giddily making their way up the grand staircase for a field trip to the Opera House. Families huddling around the Creative Carts as they explore new projects and materials. A group of fiber artists gathering in the lobby with their spinning wheels and yarn to share their craft. Teenagers meeting up to catch a movie at the Maine Film Center using our Youth Arts Access Fund. Clay members supporting each other’s creativity as they throw and glaze pots in the clay studio. Community theatre performers rehearsing in Studio 1902, their voices spilling out into the halls. These are the shared experiences that truly bring our spaces to life.
We want to express our sincere gratitude to the hundreds of donors, sponsors, volunteers, and community partners who made our first year such a stunning success. We look forward to deepening our collaborations as we continue to explore the possibilities of this new space and its place in our community’s revitalization efforts. We recognize the vital role creative expression plays in a fulfilled life and a vibrant community, nurture individual artistic endeavors at all levels, and encourage all creative outlets.
We connect and work with creatives, arts and cultural organizations, and other strategic partners to energize and enrich our community through the arts.
We honor and celebrate the array of identities in our local community and broader communities, including those that are not part of the predominant culture. We hold space on our stage, our screens, and our gallery walls, in our studios, and at our community events and programs to present diverse stories, identities, and lived experiences in real and authentic ways.
The Paul J. Schupf Art Center received nearly 97,000 visitors in 2023, bringing the grand total to nearly 105,000 since opening the doors on December 17, 2022. Total attendance across all Waterville Creates (WC) programming increased 66% over 2022, with increases by division as follows: 71% for the Maine Film Center (MFC), 41% for the Waterville Opera House (WOH), and 637% for Ticonic Gallery.
In October 2023, Americans for the Arts released the results of the long-anticipated Arts + Economic Prosperity (AEP) 6, a yearlong study which WC administered on behalf of the city of Waterville, collecting just under 600 patron surveys at various arts and cultural events. The study revealed that Waterville’s nonprofit arts and culture industry generated $13.5 million in economic activity in 2022, including $9.7 million in spending by nonprofit arts and culture organizations and $3.9 million in event-related spending by audiences, $2 million of which was attributable to WC audiences. Based on the attendance growth referenced above, the estimated spending of WC audiences increased to $3.4 million in 2023.
WC’s comprehensive membership program, which offers benefits across all of our programming divisions, grew by 55% to a total of 940 individual members by year end. Contributed income from sponsors, members, and individual donors increased by 48% over 2022, reflecting the community’s enthusiastic support for the new art center and WC’s expanded programming in the heart of downtown. Volunteer support also continued to grow in 2023 with 275 people volunteering across all divisions.
In the fall of 2023, WC kicked off a comprehensive and inclusive process to develop a new, multi-year strategic plan. The process included a cultural values assessment, staff and board workshops, and community and staff review sessions. Over 50 individuals participated, including 93% of board and staff members, ensuring that a wide range of perspectives were heard and incorporated. The three primary pillars of the plan, each of which has its own goals and metrics, are Shared Organizational Culture, Impact, and Sustainability + Longevity.

WC saw a significant increase in awareness of and demand for the Youth Arts Access Fund (YAAF) in 2023. Designed to remove cost as a barrier to participation in the arts, YAAF provides free access for youth ages 18 and under to any program WC offers, including concerts, plays, movies, art classes, and more. The fund was accessed over 1,900 times in 2023 for a total value of $66,000 in free arts experiences across all divisions of WC.
WC formalized a cross-divisional K–12 field trip program for area schools that offered curriculum-based film screenings and discussions at MFC, gallery field trips in collaboration with the Colby College Museum of Art, and three school shows at WOH. Approximately 3,000 schoolchildren of all ages and grade levels visited Schupf Arts in 2023.
WC played a significant role in growing and promoting Waterville’s First Friday events, which were launched by the Colby Arts Office and Greene Block + Studios as a way to bring the community together around the arts. With its new, prominent presence in the heart of downtown, Schupf Arts has become a cornerstone location for this monthly celebration, and WC has strategically adjusted its programming to align with these events. All of our gallery openings are now scheduled on First Fridays, and we regularly offer special film screenings and artmaking activities to add to the celebration.
Art in the Park, WC’s free, family-friendly, summer art-making program, returned to its original location in Castonguay Square. Presented in partnership with the Waterville Public Library and the Colby College Museum of Art, Art in the Park reached over 600 people through diverse activities that included vegetable print-making, nature collages, streetscapes, and more.
Through a competitive call for proposals for community-centered art programming designed to bring new and diverse audiences to the Paul J. Schupf Art Center, WC funded eight different projects representing a variety of disciplines, including dance, music, creative writing, and visual arts. Programs included: Waterville Moves, a multi-generational, bi-monthly movement workshop with Matthew Cumbie and Jenny Ngidi-Brown; a Chinese Lunar New Year Celebration with Evelyn Wong; and the Together project, a months-long celebration of community through the arts led by social practice artist Peter Bruun.
WOH produced four plays in 2023, including The Play That Goes Wrong, Rock of Ages, Murder on the Orient Express, and Elf, the Musical, which sold out seven performances, making it the highest-grossing production in WOH’s history. More than 100 incredibly talented volunteer performers contributed to WOH’s record-breaking 2023 theatrical season.
In addition to its spectacular theatre productions, WOH hosted 30 live performances (up from 19 in 2022), representing a diverse and exciting range of live music, comedy, and variety acts. Among the acts to take the WOH stage were Macy Gray, Lyle Lovett and Leo Kottke, Whitney Cummings, David Sedaris, Blues Traveler, Whose Live Anyway?, and the Glenn Miller Orchestra.
The annual Waterville Rocks outdoor summer music series returned for its eighth year with four concerts at Head of Falls in downtown Waterville. The series kicked off with The Weight Band on the opening night of the Maine International Film Festival, and included performances by Dustbowl Revival, Will Evans Trio, and Griffin William Sherry. This year’s festivities were once again enhanced with free, family-friendly arts activities and onsite food and beverages.
WOH continued its tradition of inspiring a love for theatre in our youngest patrons with three special school shows—Pete the Cat’s Big Hollywood Adventure, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and Henry IV, Part 1. WOH also hosted three weeks of theatre camp in partnership with Missoula Children’s Theatre, serving over 150 local youth. Each week-long theatre camp included auditions, rehearsals, and workshops, and concluded with a fully realized performance that was attended by hundreds of community members.

In the first full year in the Paul J. Schupf Art Center, MFC programmed the most individual titles in its history and enjoyed record-breaking audiences for some of the year’s biggest films, including Asteroid City, Barbie, and Oppenheimer to record three of the highest-grossing box office returns in nearly a decade. MFC’s new venues offer the highest-quality sound and projection experience in Maine. The new concessions stand has seen increased sales with the provision of beer and wine, and still offers the world-renowned popcorn patrons love.
In July, the 26th Maine International Film Festival (MIFF) honored Academy Award-nominated and Cannes Palme d’Or-winning director Ildikó Enyedi with its Mid-Life Achievement Award. The Festival also celebrated the career of Bill Morrison with a special program of his films in partnership with the Colby College Museum of Art, which exhibited selections of his work from across three decades. MIFF hosted the largest-ever number of made-in-Maine screenings— seven features and 16 short films—and recognized the best of each type with its juried Tourmaline Prizes. The Festival also hosted an industry event focused on educating and advocating for better economic conditions for Maine-based film production, as well as the 44th Maine Student Film and Video Festival, celebrating the work of our most promising young filmmakers.
Through the expansion of community partnerships, MFC hosted a record number of special events and rentals that provided a platform for other nonprofit organizations, such as KVCAP, the Oak Institute for Human Rights, Finding Our Voices, and the Maine Jewish Film Festival, to raise awareness of critical issues in our local communities and around the world. MFC increased participation of students from kindergarten through college with regular school shows for K–12 students and event partnerships with Colby College, Thomas College, and Kennebec Valley Community College. The three cinemas also served as fully and professionally equipped, central locations for corporate events and rentals, such as the Dirigo Labs Speaker Series and the Better Maine Conference, as well as for birthday parties and private screenings. Filmmakers have sought the MFC experience for press and crew screenings, including for Maine premieres that will be showcased during MIFF 2024.

Ticonic Gallery presented five exhibitions in 2023, including the inaugural Common Threads, Youth Art Month (YAM), The Great State of Illustration in Maine in collaboration with the Illustration Institute, Potluck, and the Holiday Bazaar. The gallery’s prominent location on Main Street, combined with a well-balanced slate of compelling exhibitions and associated programming, resulted in a dramatic 637% increase in gallery attendance over 2022. Of note, 26 schools participated in YAM with over 750 people of all ages and backgrounds attending the opening reception, and The Great State of Illustration in Maine was the most well-attended exhibition in Ticonic Gallery’s history, with around 3,500 people visiting the show.
One of the most active spaces in Schupf Arts, the Art of Clay Studio offered a variety of consistently sold-out classes and workshops for all ages, including the popular Teen Clay Club, as well as a fully enrolled clay studio membership program that allows members to access the space 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The classroom hosted a wide variety of programming for artmakers of all ages and skill levels. Highlights included two Artist + Makers Camps for youth during April and summer vacations, two sessions of After School Art Club for students ages 8–12, and a series of popular 3D printing classes for teens and adults. In addition to formal classes and workshops, Ticonic Classroom also served as a bustling maker space on First Fridays and during other special events.

Ticket revenues and program fees cover less than 50% of our annual budget, which makes this public support critical to our ability to offer outstanding arts programming. We offer our sincere thanks to the donors recognized throughout this report for their generous contributions.
These financials reflect our annual operating budget and do not include capitalized expenses or depreciation. The FY2023 deficit was funded in part by reserve funds designated to help the organization continue to ramp back up to pre-pandemic levels of staffing and programming and adjust to operations in the new art center.
