LETTER FROM LEADERSHIP

L

ooking back on 2021, we are filled with gratitude – for our talented and dedicated staff who have shown remarkable resilience and innovation throughout the pandemic, for our community and its unwavering support of the arts, and for the opportunity to reconnect with so many patrons, artists, filmmakers, and performers as we returned to in-person programming. In June, with great excitement and a firm commitment to protecting the health and safety of our staff, our patrons, and our community, Waterville Creates began to re-open its doors for the first time since March 2020. We welcomed dancers, musicians, and actors back to the stage of the Waterville Opera House to perform for enthusiastic live audiences. Movie-goers returned to Railroad Square Cinema in July for the Maine International Film Festival and kept coming back to enjoy new arthouse films on the big screen with a side of the world’s best popcorn. Potters began creating work again in the Ticonic Clay Studio, and art returned to the walls of Ticonic Gallery. While the past year continued to present unprecedented challenges, it also afforded us distinct opportunities to reflect on what we do, why we do it, and how we can do it better. The pandemic has fostered a new appreciation for the unique value that shared experiences in the arts bring to our lives and taught us important lessons about access, diversity, equity, and inclusion that we will carry forward in our work. We are incredibly excited to see our new home taking shape in downtown Waterville. The Paul J. Schupf Art Center will be a vibrant, welcoming place where the community can gather to see films, create art, view new and exciting exhibitions, and attend concerts, plays, and musicals. More than just a building, this project is an important symbol of Waterville’s commitment to the arts as core to our community identity and our economic future. Thank you for your support of Waterville Creates and our vision of a community where all people enjoy transformative experiences in the arts.

NEW BRAND IDENTITY + WEBSITE In February, Waterville Creates unveiled a new graphic identity designed to convey our role as a unified and collaborative arts organization while celebrating the distinctive programming offered by our divisions, the Waterville Opera House, Maine Film Center, and Ticonic Gallery + Studios (formerly Common Street Arts). We revealed our new brand in conjunction with the launch of our new and cohesive website, which features a consolidated ticketing platform that enables patrons to navigate seamlessly between venues to purchase tickets for film events, live performances, and educational classes and workshops.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY + INCLUSION In early 2021, the entire staff of Waterville Creates participated in intensive education on racial equity. With grant support from the Maine Arts Commission, we are continuing our commitment to this important work with board education and an assessment of our organizational practices to identify areas where we can advance our diversity, equity, and inclusion goals.

We undertook a comprehensive strategic planning process that engaged all board and staff members in developing a shared vision and roadmap for the organization as we emerge from the pandemic, rebuild and reengage our audience, and ultimately plan for our move to the Paul J. Schupf Art Center in late 2022. Through this process, we evaluated and refined our mission, vision, and values and identified key issues, opportunities, and trends impacting program delivery.

UNIFIED MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM In September, we launched a new, unified membership program that provides benefits across all divisions, as well as special gifts from founding partners, the Waterville Public Library and the Colby College Museum of Art. This reimagined program helps to sustain outstanding, accessible arts experiences for all, while also encouraging exploration of the diverse, interconnected arts opportunities available in our community through special membership events. As of December 31, over 300 individuals had become Waterville Creates members!

EDUCATION & OUTREACH Art Kits for All Launched in April 2020, our Art Kits for All program, which distributes free art supplies and instructions to area families, continued to provide tremendous benefit to the community this year. In addition to distributing 3,300 kits to area families in 2021, bringing the total distributed to over 6,800, we have found new and innovative ways to adapt the model to reach underserved audiences. This fall, as part of the statewide Freedom + Captivity Project, we worked with three facilities in the Maine State Prison system to distribute kits to incarcerated parents and their children, and in January 2022 we will be working with Spectrum Generations’ Meals on Wheels program to distribute over 150 kits to seniors in our community. Special thanks to our Art Kits for All partners: the Colby College Museum of Art, Waterville Public Schools, Waterville Public Library, Kennebec Valley Community Action Program, and the Family Violence Project.

SLICE (Students Learning Innovative Creative Endeavors) Designed to provide arts and cultural experiences for teens while exposing them to career paths in the arts, our SLICE program has been offered virtually throughout the pandemic. The fall 2021 series was a great success with a total of 189 participants from across central Maine. Following a session on theatre set design and scenic painting, we distributed 15 free tickets to the Opera House’s production of Clue to students from Waterville Alternative High School (WAHS), many of whom had never attended a live theatrical performance. This connection has led to plans for four WAHS students to apprentice with the Opera House production team for school credit.

Art in the Park This summer, we were excited to engage youth and families in fun, accessible, outdoor arts activities through our Art in the Park program, presented in partnership with the Colby College Museum of Art and Waterville Public Library every Thursday afternoon at the Downtown Waterville Farmers’ Market. In addition to hands-on artmaking activities led by local artists, families also enjoyed story time and live musical performances.

Youth Arts Access Fund Waterville Creates believes that all youth, regardless of income, ability, or background, should have access to outstanding arts programming and arts education opportunities. In an effort to remove cost as a barrier to participation, we have created a dedicated fund to support free admission for youth ages 18 and under to the full range of programming offered by Waterville Creates and its divisions, including art classes and camps, community theatre productions, live music, and film programming. The Youth Arts Access Fund was formally established with an initial $15,000 grant from the Raymond J. and Mary C. Reisert Foundation with additional funding provided by the Margaret E. Burnham Charitable Trust and the Colby College Center for the Arts and Humanities.

Community Projects In addition to our regular programs, we were thrilled to support a variety of community initiatives designed to bring cheer to people of all ages. In collaboration with the Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce, the City of Waterville, and area businesses, Waterville Creates hired local artist Desi DuBois to create sunflower-themed selfie-stations to animate the downtown landscape. We were also delighted to contribute programmatically and financially to the Waterville Public Library’s first StoryWalk® installation at the North Street Community Connector Trail, where families can enjoy Daniel Finds a Poem by Micha Archer as they stroll along the Messalonskee Stream.

RENOVATIONS The Waterville Opera House took advantage of the pause in public programming to undertake important facility improvements. In August, the surface of the main stage was replaced to improve safety for performers, and the concessions area was renovated to create a more efficient service area for staff while providing a more spacious lobby for patrons.

WATERVILLE ROCKS A fun and free program for all ages, the annual Waterville Rocks outdoor summer music series returned for four in-person shows at Head of Falls in downtown Waterville. Audiences enjoyed performances by Spencer Albee, The Wolff Sisters, Casey Abrams, and The Big Takeover.

THE RETURN OF LIVE THEATRE The Waterville Opera House hosted its first opening night in a year and a half with the opening of The Dinner Party in September, followed by a recordbreaking run of Clue in November. We also were busy at work planning, casting, and rehearsing for more outstanding live theatre in 2022 with The Mousetrap in January and, in April, the long-awaited Tuck Everlasting, which was just weeks from opening when the pandemic struck in March 2020.

LIVE MUSIC The Waterville Opera House welcomed back thousands of eager live music enthusiasts as it hosted six concerts from August through December. Performers who took the Opera House stage in 2021 included Blues Traveler, LeAnn Rimes, Chris Thile, and Wynnona Judd and The Big Noise. We have been busy building a stellar line-up for live entertainment in 2022 that includes Keb’ Mo’, Bruce Cockburn, Tedeschi Trucks, and Whose Live Anyway?

“ We drove down from Orland and were so glad we did. I haven’t laughed so much in a long, long time. The acting was amazing and the set so beautifully creative! Thank you to the entire team who made this happen for us to enjoy!” – Clue attendee

MAINE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL Film enthusiasts returned to Railroad Square Cinema for the first time since March 2020 for the 24th annual MIFF, which also included screenings at the Waterville Opera House and the Skowhegan Drive-In as well as virtual offerings. Nearly 3,500 attendees enjoyed 50 short- and feature-length films from Maine and around the world. Many of the voices and stories presented through these films might not otherwise be exhibited on the big screen in Maine, and they provoked important discoveries, connections, and conversations among filmgoers and filmmakers alike.

RAILROAD SQUARE CINEMA Following MIFF, the cinema returned to daily screenings of first-run independent films and hosted numerous special series throughout the fall and winter, including a popular retrospective of Wes Anderson films in advance of the long-awaited opening of The French Dispatch. Cinema in Conversation: Films of Freedom, Captivity, and Human Rights brought film experts, activists, directors, producers, and the subjects of the films themselves to Railroad Square in a 6-film series.

MAINE STUDENT FILM PROGRAMS Over 100 students in grades 7-12 from across Maine participated in workshops led by filmmakers, industry experts, and educators in virtual workshops offering skill-building in animation, cinematography, sound recording and design, photography, editing, screenwriting, lighting and genre as part of the Maine Student Film Crew programming. In July, the 43rd Maine Student Film Festival honored Maine’s up-and-coming filmmakers at a special screening and award ceremony featuring their short films at Railroad Square Cinema during MIFF.

“The Maine Film Center has sought to make moviegoing in Central Maine a truly participatory and community-based way of life.” – Dennis Perkins, Portland Press Herald

GALLERY EXHIBITIONS Ticonic Gallery reopened its doors to the public in September with Art Inside, an exhibition featuring Mainebased photographers Trent Bell, Séan Alonzo Harris, and Lesley MacVane, whose photographs captured artwork created by incarcerated individuals within the walls of the Maine State Prison, Mountain View Correctional Facility, and Southern Maine Women’s Correctional Center. Art Inside was part of the statewide Freedom + Captivity Project, a statewide, coalition-based public humanities project designed to consider a future without prisons and mass incarceration and afforded Ticonic Gallery an opportunity to raise awareness around local and regional social justice and racial equity issues. In November, Ticonic Gallery was thrilled to open Shirt Stories: Frescoes by Barbara Sullivan featuring dozens of shirts created using the traditional technique of painting into wet plaster to honor the laborious fresco process and its longstanding history. Shirt Stories provided a broader historical, social, and creative framework by its reference to the Hathaway Shirt Factory and its unique place in the context of New England textiles and the early labor movement in the state of Maine.

TICONIC CLAY STUDIO Back by popular demand, the Ticonic Clay Studio reopened to members in the fall. After announcing the return of wheel-throwing classes in December, we quickly sold out three separate sessions. Ticonic Clay Studio also launched its pilot CLAYMATES program, designed to accommodate learning experiences for small groups by offering private instruction in wheel throwing and hand building techniques in a safe, supportive environment.

“ Family Violence Project is thrilled to partner with Waterville Creates on Art Kits for All. Parents in our program have loved receiving the art supplies and step-by-step guidance and have said that they feel like better parents when creating projects with their children. In a year of such turmoil, this program has been a ray of sunshine and hope.” – Michelle LeClair, Family Violence Project

We offer our sincere thanks to the donors recognized throughout this report for their support of the arts in our community. These financials reflect our annual operating budget and do not include depreciation, revenues and expenses related to the sale of real estate, or funds contributed to the capital campaign for the Paul J.
