from us
Summertime in Waterville showcases the best of Maine. Friends and family come together to reconnect and celebrate, and new friends, too, are welcomed to experience the warmth of the Maine landscape. At this special time of year, the bounty of arts experiences that abound throughout the community offers vibrant ways to explore, make connections, and enjoy the best Waterville has to offer.
I’m particularly looking forward to the 27th annual Maine International Film Festival (MIFF), which will take place July 12–21. The three new screens of the Maine Film Center—where you can experience the best projection and sound in the state—and the beautiful, historic Waterville Opera House will present world, North American, and Maine premieres. We’ll also welcome filmmakers from across the globe and honor some of cinema’s most impactful creators throughout these 10 days.
As MIFF kicks off on July 12, so does the beloved, family-friendly Waterville Rocks concert series, featuring Rustic Overtones with Muddy Ruckus. Following that, three more dates follow in July and August to light up Head of Falls Park along the banks of the Kennebec River. Bring your chairs, blankets, and friends for some excellent Friday-evening concerts.
Throughout many sunny (or rainy!) afternoons, Waterville Creates, the Waterville Public Library, and the Colby College Museum of Art will offer free, creative activities through the Art in the Park series in Castonguay Square—just outside the Paul J. Schupf Art Center—for all ages and levels of experience.
We’re also excited to host the presentation of Miss Holmes Returns at the Waterville Opera House. A nurse on the run, a shadowy underworld, and the women who crack the case, this play is certainly not to be missed. And in August, the Maine Film Center presents “Lessons Learned,” a four-film series featuring some beloved classics that audiences of all ages will love to (re)discover.
I invite you to explore the incredible range of arts experiences listed in this issue of Arts Dispatch—all of which are eligible for our Youth Arts Access Fund. I look forward to seeing you in downtown Waterville this summer!

RAYNOR AHLSTRIN-MUNIEC
OPERATIONS COORDINATOR
MAINE FILM CENTER
Name, title, and when did you begin working at Waterville Creates?
My name is Raynor, and I’m the Operations Coordinator at the Maine Film Center! I started working at WC in November 2023.
What does a “typical” day look like for you?
Gosh, what don’t I do? Every day is certainly different, and there’s a lot that happens in the Maine Film Center. Part of my day is usually spent maintaining and updating the MFC website, as well as the slides in the box office and the theaters. I also spend time gathering media and quotes for social media posts, helping write descriptions for our films, working with our designer to create promotional graphics, programming and hosting special events, and planning MIFF! I’ve also been spending time lately developing an exciting new program for MFC—more on that soon!
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I absolutely love working with the community and helping to bring so many cool films to our screens, especially ones that you wouldn’t be able to see elsewhere! It’s always enjoyable talking with patrons after they’ve seen a movie and hearing their thoughts. And I would be remiss not to mention all our adorable office dogs!
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
To me, perfect happiness is being able to experience amazing new things (be it places, people, foods, etc.) and sharing those adventures with the people and furry friends I love. That and a powerful air conditioner when it’s disgustingly hot and humid in the summer!
Can you recommend a play, musical, or movie experience to our readers? Where to begin?! I highly recommend watching Hunt for the Wilderpeople (one of my all-time favorites), and if you haven’t seen Little Miss Sunshine or The Nice Guys you should watch those as well. Of course, the best upcoming movie experience is MIFF27. It’ll be my very first MIFF, and I hope to see you all there!
