from us I

t’s hard to believe that just over a year ago, we were wearing hard hats as we explored our new home at the Paul J. Schupf Art Center. As Waterville Creates celebrates its first year in this beautiful building, we are delighted to share some of our successes: Attendance has increased across all programming divisions, with a 76% increase in Maine Film Center movie goers, a 65% increase in Waterville Opera House attendees, and an incredible 1850% increase in visitation to Ticonic Gallery. In addition to strong attendance at formal programs, Schupf Arts has been embraced by the community as a welcoming gathering space, where on any given day you might see in our lobby spaces students doing homework, families making art together using our free Creative Carts, or fiber artists gathering for a weekly spinning circle. In 2023 alone, the Youth Arts Access Fund was used over 1,700 times, providing over $60,000 in free arts experiences to area youth. This brings the grand total for YAAF to over 2,400 uses and $85,000 in funds disbursed. Over 2,500 schoolchildren have come through our doors for gallery field trips, special film screenings and discussions, and school shows at the Opera House, filling our new space with gasps of wonderment, giggles, and the munching of popcorn. As we reflect on all of the patrons, programs, events, and partnerships that we have welcomed to Schupf Arts in this inaugural year, we couldn’t be more excited about what’s in store for 2024. Thank you for your support of our mission of arts experiences for all.

events CINEMA EXPLORATIONS

A wintertime, community-curated film series. Free admission made possible by the Colby College Center for the Arts and Humanities.

THE ARC OF OBLIVION Saturday + Sunday, January 6 + 7, 10am | Not Rated | Free The Arc of Oblivion is an unexpectedly playful search for an answer to a deeply existential question: In a universe that erases its tracks, why are we so hellbent on leaving a trace? Set against the backdrop of a quixotic quest to build an ark in a field in Maine, Ian Cheney’s film heads far afield–to salt mines in the Alps, fjords in the Arctic, and ancient libraries in the Sahara—to illuminate the strange world of archives, record-keeping, and memory. DRIVING MADELEINE Saturday + Sunday, January 20 + 21, 10am | Not Rated | Free Driving Madeleine focuses on a taxi ride across Paris. Cash-strapped Charles sees a quick, lucrative ride as an opportunity to cut his mounting debt. Madeleine is moving into an elder care home and wants to make some stops along the way, predicting that this might be her last ride through the city. Initially reluctant, Charles agrees to keep the meter running and gradually becomes fascinated by the stories she tells about the people, the places, and events of her life. THE OWNERS Saturday + Sunday, February 3 + 4, 10am | Not Rated | Free The Owners is a brilliant seriocomic film from Czechia about a community of apartment owners working together to make decisions about the building in which they all live. Their bantering, bickering, and bargaining makes for a highly entertaining and thought-provoking comedy that explores what it means to exercise democracy at the local level. BETWEEN TWO WORLDS Saturday + Sunday, February 17 + 18, 10am | Not Rated | Free Between Two Worlds stars Juliette Binoche as Marianne, who poses as a deserted wife forced to join the workforce of cleaners doing hard work at an unforgiving pace for low pay. Marianne takes all she has seen and the stories she’s been told to create an exposé of their exploitation. Lauded by readers and critics, she rationalizes her deception of her co-workers as being necessary for a greater good. But how do these women really feel about Marianne who had been a friend and confidante? THE NIGHT OF THE 12TH Saturday + Sunday, March 2 + 3, 10am | Not Rated | Free Captain Yohan Vivés faces an elusive mystery when he investigates the gruesome murder of Clara in the French town of Grenoble. The attack was premeditated, and its violence suggests revenge. All the evidence points towards a scorned ex-lover, but which one? Vivés’ team methodically digs through the details of Clara’s life, uncovering her secrets while striving to weed out the killer. WATERVILLECREATES.ORG

staff spotlight PHOEBE SANBORN ADMINISTRATIVE COORDINATOR

What does a “typical” day look like for you? No one day is the same. I answer a lot of questions in the office about procedures, I troubleshoot problems, and I address whatever latest administrative project is important for the week, from producing a special report to getting our copier fixed. The only guarantee is that I’m never bored! What do you enjoy most about your job? I like being a jack-of-all-trades in a creative organization, and I love working in a job that feels like it’s contributing to my community in a positive way. I’ve worked in plenty of places that were, in retrospect, just work. I take a lot of pride in what we create here. What is your idea of perfect happiness? Sleeping in a little late, waking up to a beautiful day, playing games and laughing with some friends, and then dinner out. I love slow days where I can decide in the moment what I’d like to do. No plans are sometimes the best plans! Can you recommend a play, musical, movie, or other art related experience to our readers? I particularly love heist and mystery stories, but honestly rather than recommending just one, I’ll say what I think is the most important part of any film or live performance: see it in the theater. I can’t stress that enough. I have rarely felt such joy as when I could laugh with a crowd. The excitement, cheers, gasps (and yes, even tears) that are shared in a theater make for an incredible, and totally different, experience from sitting at home.

ry your hand at snow sculpting! Unlike building a snowman, which is a process of adding material, snow sculpting involves carving away at a block of snow to reveal your masterpiece. Embrace the winter season, gather your family and friends, and let your creativity flourish in the snow! Fun fact: Two Waterville Creates’ employees are heading to the U.S. Nationals for Snow Sculpting this February! Go, team Maine!

MATERIALS CARDBOARD BOX – the bigger the better (you can get cardboard boxes from area businesses!) ANY KITCHEN, HOME, OR GARDENING TOOLS YOU DON’T MIND GETTING WET – trowels, spoons, ice chippers, chisels, horse curry combs, and even sandpaper FOOD COLORING (optional)

CREATE A SNOW SCULPTURE DIRECTIONS egin by tightly packing a cardboard box with 1 B snow. Use both your hands and feet to ensure there are no air pockets—this will help make your sculpture sturdy. 2 Allow the snow block to set for a few hours; in colder weather, it will harden more quickly. If the temperatures are milder, you can let it set overnight for a more solid structure. 3 Use your sculpting tools to gently remove the excess snow. You can choose to follow a planned design or simply let your creativity flow. Simplicity often works best! 4 To add an extra touch of color, consider incorporating food coloring into your creation.

Ideas for simple snow sculptures: a turtle, a teddy bear, a fish, a giant head, a house, or a duck
